@DrSarahPhillips
Somaliland has tried to make its case by becoming a democratic country, having competitive elections, being secure and trying to establish itself as this more democratic, better alternative to Somalia.
During her Master's graduation from the University of Chicago,Deqa Aden, an Abaarso alumna and first Somalilander Obama scholar, couldn't go through the ceremony without wearing her country's flag. She is from a generation that was born under the Somaliland flag ...

is an independent, sovereign, peaceful and democratic state with a President elected through a country-wide one-person, one-vote election. It stands by the will of its people and it owns its political decision!
Becoming the country's leaders in a few years, their priority is to build their future and that of the next generation in Somaliland. That fact should sink in deep for those who are beholden to nostalgia of bygone days!
In wars, people in position of power who put their conscience before commands and refuse to kill innocent people deserve highest honor. Ahmed Dheere as a military pilot knew he was trained to defend the country against foreign aggression & defied orders to kill fellow citizens.
Ahmed Mohamed (Ahmeddheere) refused to bombard Hargeisa in 1988 & to massacre innocent people. He sacrificed his life to the people of Somaliland. Hence, on behalf of the Somaliland people, I awarded him the Medal of Honor. Ahmed is a true hero here in the Republic of Somaliland.
Even at the pinnacle of his victory, he is faithful to the cause of his original homeland,
