A design for glasses that replicate the trend in anime & manga art of erasing a small space out of the temples of eyeglasses to show a character's eyes in profile. 😂 I think these are kinda neat looking, actually!
Reminder that Bob Ross stated before he died he didn't want ANYONE to profit off his image or his work. If you respect him and what he stood for, do NOT buy any of the kitschy junk being peddled with his face on it--including this terrible abomination.
Fun fact: the word "glomp" came from a hugging sound effect from Viz's English translation of Ranma 1/2. People used it in fanfiction and it spread to non-Ranma works slowly over time to the point where people who've never read Ranma in their lives knew & used the term.
Check out the cast for the brand new English Dub for TOKYO GODFATHERS. 🎄✨

Before VHS, anime fans recorded tv anime episode audio on cassette tapes to listen to. Here's one person's old original Gundam recordings, decorated with stickers from anime magazines.
The Internet Archive is an extremely important resource, not just for their MASSIVE online library, but for historically archiving media and websites like The Wayback Machine. Show your support if you are able, we don't want to lose this incredible asset.
It’s time to stand up for libraries! ✊The Hachette v. Internet Archive lawsuit will be heard in court on Monday. Will libraries be able to continue owning, lending and preserving books? Show your support here:

Popular Jump mangaka found with child porn, admits to being attracted to young girls: slap on the wrist, paid a fine, is still working & has his character appear in a new video game.
Actor in a video game found to possess some coke:
Thinking about how Whisper of the Heart is such an underrated Ghibli film that it isn't more common knowledge that this scene of Shizuku was the inspiration to the now iconic "lofi hiphop chill beats to study to" girl.
I love the scene in the first season of Ranma 1/2 when Akane's hair suddenly gets cut. They literally SLICE the frame. It's such a simple thing, but it really leaves an impact visually.
Reminder that j-list has used stolen art from Japanese artists for years & continues to do so. You can get most of their items cheaper from places like Hobby Japan, CD Japan, AmiAmi, Bento&co, Candysan, Asian Food Grocer, Amazon Japan, Kinokuniya & The Rightstuf anyway.
It's October 10th, which means it's Rumiko Takahashi's birthday!! She's 63 years old today. Happy birthday to the creator of many of my favorite manga series! 🥳

Hey now that it's officially the holiday season, let me remind you that one of THE BEST Christmas movies ever made is streaming for free legally in the US: Satoshi Kon's Tokyo Godfathers.
As the holidays fast approach, here's your periodical reminder that if you're in the US, you can watch Tokyo Godfathers free & legally on Crackle: Merry Christmas!
Didn't sleep very well. Kept thinking about the Kyoani tragedy. Something people may not know: they started as a support studio, mostly staffed by women, & helped with things like SDF Macross, Urusei Yatsura, Kimagure Orange Road, Evangelion, AND MORE...
Since the viral (and very fake) Naoko Takeuchi quote was making the rounds for the millionth time recently, I finally got off my butt & wrote what I should have done ages ago: DEBUNKING THE MYTH OF NAOKO TAKEUCHI HAVING "NO FRIENDS".
As someone who's been an anime fan for literally decades, I'll tell you a secret: you don't have to watch all the new seasonal anime if you dont want to. Watch things that interest you from a season ago. A year ago. 10 years ago! Life's too short to sit thru things that bore you.
Ai Yazawa drawing Nana & Space Channel 5 art for Space Channel 5's anniversary & upcoming VR game is the very specific crossover of 2 things I adore I didn't know I wanted. 💖
When I say anime used to be extremely cherry-picked to the point that companies mainly only officially released the "sexy" and "violent" action-oriented titles? This right here is a perfect example of how anime was viewed by the general public in the 90s.
Ever wondered how anime used to be advertised in America? Here's a 1999 ad for the "The Best of Anime II" on VHS, which I just discovered on an old tape and losslessly converted.
In case you're looking for a great Christmas movie to watch, here's a reminder that Tokyo Godfathers is streaming legally for free (with ads) in the US!

If you wanna feel even older, Naoko Takeuchi originally drew the Crystal Seminar Discs as 3 1/2" floppies. She redrew them as CDs in the early 00s reprint.

As someone who owns a few cels, just FYI for anyone reading this: they need to be displayed in proper frames with acrylic that will protect from UV rays, otherwise if they're displayed in sunlight they start to fade. More info on how to care for cels here!
The official Moomin YouTube channel not only has a live stream of the English version of the old anime, but they also have a live stream of Chill Beats to Hibernate To.
Something I REALLY appreciate about Gundam: Witch From Mercury is the variation on character's body types. We have fat characters! Characters that actually look older! Ranges of skin tone, height, hair, and faces! It's so refreshing. I wish we saw this in anime more often!
To the handful of people who keep replying to this with "IT'S BECAUSE JAPAN HAS REAL HARSH DRUG LAWS!".....yes, thank you, I'm well aware of this. I was pointing out just how harsh they are in comparison to laws that should be protecting kids.
It's pretty sad, huh.
End of an era, my friends. Rightstuf has been the king of superior packaging, customer service, and amazing deals in anime & manga for nearly 40 years...Now it's being eaten up by another Sony acquisition. I can't say I'm surprised, but it's still really sad.
BREAKING NEWS
It was announced RightStufAnime will be shutting down on October 10th, 2023 & will migrate all listed products over to the Crunchyroll Store
• The RightStufAnime winter sale will still be ongoing, but it'll be renamed the Crunchyroll Holiday Sale along with
I dunno where the idea of Naoko Takeuchi being a lonely person with no friends before she made Sailor Moon started, but it's def not true & I wish people would stop perpetuating it. Here's an interview with her from 96 were she mentions hanging with friends BEFORE Sailor Moon.
Damn could you even fathom a game like Jump Force but for shoujo magazine titles from Nakayoshi? Imagine a game with Sailor Moon, Magic Knight Rayearth, Ojamajo Doremi, Cardcaptor Sakura, Saint Tail, Sugar Sugar Rune, Tokyo Mew Mew & literally every Precure.
People get so weird about shojo manga when things like Junji Ito's Tomie technically ran in a shojo magazine, but everyone just calls it horror. Shojo can be anything, folks.
Dang this is getting way more attention than I thought so....
●TERFs are bad
●Nazis are bad
●Trans rights are human rights
●Be excellent to each other
●Watch more weird old anime & read more manga that's not in Jump.
g'night!
I saw some people mocking or making fun of this tweet, and its really, really disappointing. Y'all want more people to watch older, classic anime, but then make fun of them for "just learning about it"? This is the kind of excitement you WANT people to have for older anime!! SMH
"Cat girls" peaked with Masamune Shirow's designs for the Puma Sisters in Dominion Tank Police in the 80s because they were actual adult women (androids) who looked extremely badass. We need them to make a come back.
I feel there has been a sharp decline in catgirls since 1992. Someone decided "we need to scale back the catgirls for budgetary reasons". To this day they have not paid for their crimes.
Here's a series of 3-word sad stories for anime/manga fans:
Out of print.
No longer available.
No bluray release.
Pulled from streaming.
Licensed by T0kyopop.
Licensed by DM/P.
No official release.
Never fully translated.
There's a thread going around about how being an anime fan was "better" in the time when we got maybe 20 anime VHS released a year officially & we had to find fansubs for anything else...and as someone who lived through those times, I'm here to tell you: that's a load of BS.
Some extremely sad news to share. Izumi Matsumoto, the creator of Kimagure Orange Road, passed away on October 6th--shared in a blog post today on his official website:
RIP Osamu Kobayashi. He was not only a unique & talented director (ParaKiss, Beck, etc) but an AMAZING artist & designer. His mechanical designs for Dragon's Heaven still blow me away, I still hope it may get licensed someday so more folks can see it.
As someone who's been around long enough to remember when what little manga we had was shelved with the MAYBE half a dozen American comics in every bookstore, I almost feel OVERWHELMED at how much manga is available when I walk into a B&N now. It's truly staggering.

This is so depressing. I'm sure there's plenty of stuff in there not worth saving, but for example: Project A-ko was finally found after being filed incorrectly for YEARS. Imagine what else could be in there that was thought to be lost that's just going to be thrown away. 😔
Come end of Oct, Tokyo Lab, one of the largest holders of film material in Japan, will be discarding all film left unclaimed by rights holders. It's a foregone conclusion that anything stuck in "licensing hell" is done-for. This is bad.
I'm baffled when people argue that the non-binary characters in Land of the Lustrous are "clearly female" & insist on calling them women.
Please understand non-binary people can choose to look traditionally feminine. NB does not always equal "androgynous" looking.
This art gets passed around as Akira Toriyama's, but it was actually drawn by Nakatsuru Katsuyoshi for the short Dr Slump sequel manga he did. He was also a key animator on Dragon Ball GT and the 90s Dr Slump TV anime.
@Danny8bit
As someone who grew up with the original & enjoyed it at the time, I VASTLY prefer the new designs because now all the women dont just look like palette swapped copies of each other....
Periodic reminder that you don't have to own a ton of merch, have a huge collection of anime/manga, or have encyclopedic knowledge of Deep Dive Trivia to be a fan of what you love. You're still a "real" fan if you only watch stuff streaming, or check out manga at a library. 💖
This is a HUGE win for preserving 90s fandom history! If you ever wanted to see what fandom online looked like before social media, this is a great window.
So DiscMaster has built-in web file support, and an anime publication(?) named DOKAN would regularly dump entire websites on their CDs in the late 90s...
This means we now have a one-of-a-kind treasure trove of complete ~1998 anime fansites.
With the news that TP's Rising Stars of Manga is coming back, I'm just gonna bring back this thread of articles detailing their history of not treating their artists/winners of this competition very well. I know they SAY they've changed, but KNOW YOUR HISTORY, KIDS! Be informed!

The thing that sucks the most about Tumblr dying is that was where so many artists I followed fled to after Livejournal got bought out & started making adult/LGBTQA+ content against their TOS. Lesson here is that big corporations ruin artist driven platforms every. time.
