Born on December 8th 1925 - jazz organ innovator Jimmy Smith changed my life when I heard 'Back At The Chicken Shack' coming from the speakers outside the WG Stores in Shepherds Bush, West London in 1965.. I bought my first Hammond - the rest is history!
The Steam Packet "Formed in 1965 by Long John Baldry after the break-up of his previous group the Hoochie Coochie Men. It included Rod Stewart who had been with Baldry in the Hoochie Coochie Men, vocalist Julie Driscoll, organist Brian Auger and guitarist Vic Briggs."
Victor Feldman was a brilliant pianist who totally changed my approach to jazz piano, Here he is on the BBC's Jazz 625 show in 1965, introduced by Humphrey Littleton - with Rick Laird on bass - who also played with me in the original Brian Auger (piano) Trinity!

revolutionized the Hammond organ in the โ50s and โ60s. His

sessions from 1956 to 1963 were extremely influential in showing the instrument could be creatively used in a jazz context.
In July 1963 I formed the Brian Auger Trinity with Phil Kinorra on drums, Rick Laird bass, then added John McLaughlin on guitar & Glen Hughes on baritone sax aka 'The Niddy Griddys' From left to right we have Glen Hughes, Phil Kinorra, Rick Laird, myself &

Long John Baldry, the brilliant UK blues singer and bandleader was born in this date in 1941.. a very nice (and tall!) guy, it was always a pleasure to work with. Here he is with the rest of us in The Steam Packet in 1965.

A rather tattered, early 1960's flyer from a 'out of town' gig set up by Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club where my piano trio supported trio the unique & brilliant Roland Kirk.. which was quite an amazing experience!

It was in London around 1962 when I got the gig to play piano for the great jazz vocalese singer and poet Babs Gonzales. A real character! A few years later he sent me a signed copy of his book ..'To my buddy...git dat money!"
RCA didn't want to release a single of the Oblivion Express' original version of this - but Cuba Gooding Senior's The Main Ingredient loved it, and had a hit with it!
