My last day as General Manager of

from opening it’s doors in 2000 to “The End” (

VARIETY:
“Warner Bros. Animation, Cartoon Network Studios and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe. Those three LABELS will continue to exist, but development and main production teams for Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios will now merge.”
RIP CNS
Warner Bros has released a peek at the “new” CNS logo. Made me laugh when I saw it. I spent 20 years making sure our logo was never inverted in colors. In fact I once rejected 300 jackets that were printed “wrong”. Here WB made a choice to flop it…to make it feel new? 🤷♂️
Sadly, this building will no longer be CNS. From what I’ve been told, everyone will be out by August 1. All moving together in a WB building as one animation unit. Farewell CNS as it was.
The original Cartoon Network style guide (before originals) 1992. Everything you wanted to know about how they wanted the network branded from logo to product design. All the classics. The playbook for bringing an old library to a new audience. 1/
Creator self model sheets from 2000. SHEEP had just premiered. PPG & EEE were in production and on air. I don’t believe Genndy or John D ever did one. I like how everything about these reflect the man behind them.
This was the first animated end logo we created for the studio in 2001. It became the template for all shows. We kept this “slate” (open/close) logo, for 20 years. It was always something creators looked forward to doing with their characters
This man saved the CNS sign from being sold for scrap metal. I know there's been a lot of buzz about the sign, even I wondered what happened. I think everyone should know his story. He has an office across from the studio and he understood the historical significance 1/
Original Drawing created during the making of the Invader Zim pilot 1999. I left Nickelodeon before the series was put into production. I always felt Zim would have had a better home at Cartoon Network. It was greenlit during a time when Nick was trying be more like CN.
From Genndy:
“Well the day is finally here! After 20 years of developing, pitching, failing, developing, we have come to the premiere night!! Here are some of the development drawings from my very first sketches to what it has become now.”
Just reminded that last month was the 21st anniversary of the PPG MOVIE release. Box office was weak. WB distribution told us it was because boys wouldn’t go to see it. It was “a movie for girls.” Even though we knew they were watching the show!
The
#AdventureTime
Finn & Jake balloon from the 2014
#MacysParade
It was a snowy year! The ballon appeared 2013-2015 It was 40 ft tall!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
Late 90s sales/marketing brochure. We spent a lot of years as number 3 behind Disney and Nick. In many ways, that position allowed us to take more risks. Nothing to lose…
The MARVELOUS WORLD OF McCRACKEN (2009) - Wander is a perfect fit in this world of otherwise CN characters. Sorry we didn’t produce it. We also passed on an opportunity to produce Kid Cosmic!
WE'VE BROKEN 30K!!!!

From my Nickelodeon days (1998). Nick was extremely good at knowing what their brand was and messaging it to employees. Notebooks like this were super helpful in understanding the mission.
2000 was the Summer of Samurai at the studio as Genndy began preproduction on Samurai Jack. Here’s a clip from the first test animation. This ultimately became the teaser for the series…
May 1 will mark the 20th anniversary since the premiere of MEGAS XLR (2004). The original / working title was LOWBROW. We initially looked to place the animation at a Japanese studio to bring out the anime hybrid feel. That didn’t work out. Here are two of the premiums we created
The year was 2005. What an amazing slate of series we had in production. Shout out to
@r0mr0
for creating this poster at the time. In the style of vintage rock festival posters. Thanks Rob!
This series was a game changer for the studio. First series we produced in Flash. We had an incredible flash team that helped mold the software for TV production. It was never meant for that. Craig & Mike were so supportive and the results gave Flash a new respect. 19 years ago!
The WALTsicle. A gift to me from SpongeBob creator Steve Hillenberg during my time at Nickelodeon. I helped launch the series into production. He and a friend created the Walt Doll amid rumors that Disney has been cryogenically frozen…
DIC was a training ground for line producers. Because we had to do as much as we could with not a lot of funds or support. Many folks who started at DIC went on to head up production at the major studios: Disney,WB, HB,Nick, CN, Dreamworks, Titmouse, MTV. All started at DIC.
Joe Murray was a consummate professional in his work. He completed his CAMP LAZLO (2003) pilot animatic and delivered it complete with custom dvd art. No one had an eye for talent like Joe. Side note- LAZLO was the studio’s first Emmy win.
CN premiered the CGI GARFIELD series in late 2009. The following spring a very different series was about to premiere. I’m not sure who captured this moment, but you can see the loss of words in these three. ADVENTURE TIME would set a new course.
We had a big Emmy win across multiple series in 2005. Here’s the ad CN took out in the Hollywood Reporter. We got some heat for it from the artists. It was felt that the tone was belittling because of the “doodling” line. Understandable.
At last you can see the CNS stairwell! This was a 20 year project continually being added to over time. We started with spray paint and ultimately, in later years, it was markers. This was reserved as the place to draw in the walls. And many did.
We were only beginning production on SpongeBob when I started at Nick in 1998. But the series that was always a favorite of mine was already two years into production- HEY ARNOLD! (1998) Some may not know that Arnold started in claymation shorts (not for Nick) with a working
The anniversary of DEXTER’S premiere (1996) this past week, reminded me of how one of Genndy’s dreams came true when he was able to do his own Little Golden Book (2001). These books, frequently had incredible art, and were so nostalgic to kids growing up. Genndy wanted to capture
I worked on this series during my DIC days! We had two SONIC series in production at the same time. It was a big year for SONIC!
@jenniferpelph
produced and Kent Butterworth was creative. Crazy days! The speed in which these were made would blow some folks minds!
I met TOEI Animation in 1987 during our production of The New Archies at DIC. TOEI was our primary animation studio for the series. Here’s there 1989 annual calendar as well as an Archies cel set up. TOEI was animation royalty. Just check out those characters.
1998, my first day at Nick - I was handed the SpongeBob pilot and told this was the next series to go into production. I watched the pilot and laughed out loud. Cheers to 25 Years for the sponge that evolved from Bob The Sponge (1989 zine) to Sponge Boy to SpongeBob SquarePants!
The 1997 merge of HB and WB created the need for CNS. It was soon clear these two cultures did not fit together. The result was a call from CN in 1999 asking me to create a place and culture where the former HB could thrive again that space was - CARTOON NETWORK STUDIOS.
The tale of
#cartoonnetworkstudios
begins here at
#hannabarbera
1997. I was fortunate to be head of production for HB 1996 & 1997. That was the point when TimeWarner acquired Turner, and HB studios was merged into WB. Those who know will see the irony in this tale...
This is going to be incredible! We started this series before I left CN. We used the same animation studio that we used for Primal - Studio La Cachette! Beautiful
The mug that started it all 😄 This is the first mug we created for the studio with the original logo circa early 2000’s. We’d stock these in the studio kitchen cabinets. I’m sure more than a few found there way home with visitors. 😄 Good morning!
Here’s a rare hand painted cel from the early Cartoon Cartoon days. It features signatures of the original group of creators including Mr. Hanna & Mr. Barbera who each produced their last shorts - Hard Luck Duck (Hanna) and Dino (Barbera) for the program.
It was 10 years ago that we convinced Beatle Ringo Starr to let us present him as a Powerpuff girl - The Powerpuff Girls: Dance Pantsed special (2014). He could not have been a better sport, including recording an original song titled “I Wish I Was A Powerpuff Girl”. Peace & Love
Shortly after SPONGEBOB premiered in May 1999, we did a family & friends premiere party at the zoo. The giveaway was a beach towel. Can’t remember why we didn’t make it a beach party. Would have made more sense! I’ve always been a fan of this simple logo drawing of SpongeBob.
CN Promotional Playing Cards (2005) with a magic theme. The studio celebrated its 5th anniversary that year and these were the cards we used at our casino themed party.
In 2013 we were able to get an episode of Adventure Time accepted for competition in
@sundancefest
I knew we would not be accepted if the short was perceived to be a kids TV series. So we cut the few scenes that featured Finn & Jake out. And submitted under the title THANK YOU.
When I joined HB in 1996, they were exploring a reboot of THE JETSONS. During visual development we went out to several WAC creators to get their take. Here’s David Feiss’. Always so much life in his drawings. Unfortunately we never moved ahead with a series.
It’s the 27th anniversary of World Premiere Toons…here’s a hand painted Cel that was created and signed by the original creators…you’ll see some familiar faces here…
World Premiere Toons marketing material - 1994. “…we're giving young, talented animators an opportunity to create their cartoons one at a time, from start to finish.” Let’s get back to this.
SPONGEBOB (1999) This was part of a crew gift. It was wrapped around a prayer type candle. Wax doesn’t withstand the time well so it’s been peeled off. I do love this tiki motif. “All Hail The Sponge of Tikis!” 😁
In 2011 John Dilworth and I went to Singapore in search of an animation studio to bring COURAGE to life in 3D for the first time. The result was one crazy trip and - THE FOG OF COURAGE!
Original animation cel from “Meet The Reaper” (1999) pilot for The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy. Love the ink line and Billy’s pose here. From director Robert Alvarez’ collection. The series was one of only five series in production when we opened the studio.
Of all the studios I worked at, none of them understood the power of brand the way Nickelodeon did. Here’s a guide to the Nick logo - LogoLogic (1998). Dr Logo tells you all you need to know, and how to place it on nearly any shape. Brilliant
May 1 will mark 25 years since the premiere of SPONGEBOB. Here’s the invite to the studio’s “Family & Friend’s Day” where we celebrated the premiere. I don’t think any of us expected what was to come for this crazy sponge boy.
Early drawing (1996) from my HB days. I AM WEASEL and I.R. BABOON. I’m not sure that Baboon’s design would pass today either. At least not for a kid’s show. We already had to tone down Jake in Gym Partner. Oh those monkey butts.
1996 - The year I started at Hanna Barbera. Dexter had launched the year prior and had the industry buzzing. It was a new look and feel, and the energy was high. This was the beginning.
DEXTER’S LAB did well in Japan. Here’s a couple of promo items from one of my trips to visit our Japanese partner in the early 2000s. They did a great job on this kind of SWAG!
By the way, the flag design was a doodle Mike Lazzo did. The teeth of the skull are the Cartoon Network logo. Fire department made us take it down because you needed a permit to fly a flag in downtown Burbank!
Before Cartoon Network started broadcasting on October 1, 1992, this logo was used in its marketing to cable operators and advertisers. The middle of the logo could be edited to feature the characters on the network. Designed by J.J. Sedelmaier Productions, CHEERS TO 30 YEARS!
Happy 10th Anniversary STEVEN UNIVERSE! One of the most ambitious groundbreaking series ever produced at the studio. Rebecca had a vision and kid’s television was changed forever!
ROBOT JONES (2004) - A series that ended too soon IMO. A fun, funny, beautiful homage to the 70s/80s. It was the last series we produced with hand painted cels, which also meant it was shot on film. All adding to its charm. If anything deserves a second chance, this one does!
Not a Cartoon Network Studios series, but definitely a Cartoon Network original from the brilliant mind of Danny Antonucci. Recently learned he pitched the Ed’s to Nickelodeon at the same time. Nick wanted to pick it up he picked CN because they offered him more creative control
THE CARTOONSTITUTE 2009 studio screener. The shorts program was a noble attempt to bring WAC back. Sadly, budge constraints prevented completion. Two series did come out of it however. Money well spent.
@CrackMcCraigen
&
@RobRenzetti
did an incredible job of bringing the talent
OH YEAH! CARTOONS (1998) Nickelodeon. I guess you could say this is another series that was produced at two studios I worked for. Many of the creators of the HB What A Cartoon program moved over to Nick to do shorts there. I also moved from one to the other. Both produced under
After 9/11 there was a wave of patriotism throughout the country. The American flag became really popular! Here’s a rare employee gift photo frame we created. I was surprised to see Craig Bartlett’s Party Wagon on it!
The best way to get a sneak preview! CN WPT promotional flip book POWERPUFF GIRLS (1995) backed with YUCKIE DUCK - now that’s a double bill - no pun intended 😄
2004’s PUFFY AMI YUMI and 2006’s CLASS OF 3K, were the only two times we did series based on actual celebrity personalities. Interestingly, neither were kid’s musicians. Today buyers wouldn’t touch shows like these. This was an exclusive SDCC comic I believe.
During first season of AT, I was meeting with Pen. During the meeting he created this doodle and left it behind. I had it printed on a shirt for all studio employees and it became the first AT shirt ever made. History
#adventuretime
1999 Crew Gift - SPONGEBOB Divers Watch. This simple design was frequently used in the early days of the series. So appealing even with the most basic lines.
#SpongeBob
REGULAR SHOW Storyboard Guide (2010) At CNS we strongly supported storyboard guides for all series. It was the best way to convey tone and mechanics specific to each series.
Original INSPECTOR GADGET stock model pack. From the early 80s. The original series was produced with KK DIC the Japanese animation arm of DIC. All of our materials went to them for large parts of pre-production.
#inspectorgadget
2001 - Our ambitious attempt to get into the toy biz. Manufactured and distributed by our own consumer products team When we split from WB, we also took CP back. Sam Jack was our first entry into that world. Genndy loved the fact that he could give direct feedback on the process
On this day (Aug. 10) in 2001, Genndy Tartakovsky's animated series "Samurai Jack" debuted on Cartoon Network. The eight-time Emmy-winning series ran for five season through 2007. One of the first original series we produced at the studio.
When Ted Turner bought HB in 1991, his purchase was largely based on this single collection of data. The CPM, lists every episode HB produced and owned (6000+). One look at this and he knew it was more than a studio - it was a network. A CARTOON NETWORK
1993 - SONIC hits
#1
on Saturday morning. The Saturday morning ABC series was incredibly challenging for us to produce compared to the syndicated series. This was a real victory at the time! I do like the simplicity of this ad.
Tomorrow will be 13 years since the premiere of SYM-BIOTIC TITAN.This series marked Genndy’s return to CNS after a 5 year departure.Also the only series that had protestors outside the studio due to its cancellation! Anybody recall the first giant robot series we produced at CNS?
Didn’t realize it’s been 30 years. This was the Sonic syndicated series and not the ABC series. We had them both in production at the same time. 1993 was a crazy year.
#SonicTheHedegehog
The animation quality of ANGRY BEAVERS (1999) is possibly some of the highest produced during my time at Nick. Mitch Schauer’s attention to technical detail was singular. The result was production delays - but ultimately a beautiful show. Quality takes time, but sometimes TV
In 2002 CN JAPAN released three box sets of the PPG series. Each set featured a different girl and was colored accordingly. The first was Blossom. I picked this poster up during a visit to our Tokyo office.
He watched when everyone gathered to bid farewell. When he saw the sign being torn down, he saved it and paid the company to not send it out for scrap. In an attempt to make it available to those that would appreciate it (and to recoup his expense) he made it available by listing
OUT OF JIMMY’S HEAD premiered this month 16 years ago. While not that well received, it was our first live action / 2D series at the studio. All of the animation was done in house. It seemed if we were to do any live action, it should have an animated element.
@mattdanner
was SP!
BEN 10 (2005) Here’s the original series press kit. Before everything went electronic, CN did some incredibly creative press kits. In this case creating an OMNITRIX cereal! BEN 10 was the longest running production (in five iterations) we did at CNS - 2006-2021
