I just want to remind you all again that no period in history where the majority of doctors, university profs, nurses, teachers were gaslit, alienated, neglected, and "othered" by the government was a good time in history.
Can someone please explain the WORST-but-plausible outcomes from the public being 'too' cautious about avoiding COVID infection right now?
Like, what are minimizers afraid will happen? Too many masks in public places? Higher booster uptake? Too much fresh air?
You all do understand that residents of China are people, right? Beloved sons, daughters, parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles, friends to those within & outside China.

I wonder how many little kids feel like crap and can't articulate it and/or do complain, but parents dismiss the complaints b/c they haven't been warned to watch for post-COVID cardiac, renal, GI, diabetic, neuro issues? 😥
So. Here we go. Son's grade 2 classmate has COVID. Three siblings attend the school.
Classmate attended last Wed (1 hr only as first day). Fever wed night. Clinic Thu said NO TEST🤦♀️. Kid still sick by Sun. Took to ER. Tested there - COVID19.
NO SCHOOL EXPOSURE NOTICE.
@richardzussman
There should ALWAYS be a mask mandate in hospitals. It’s wild that we ever remove it. It’s a hospital, not a social club. It’s where the sickest people go
Outdoor patio. Young server wearing good mask (thick KF94/CAN95 ish). I complimented this. She looked like she wanted to cry. "It's b/c of school. Everyone is at school really sick. But it's Gr 12 and we can't miss anything." 😭
What the fuck are we doing to our kids???

1/ Met my son's new friend's mom the other day when they came over. We greeted them in our masks.
Me: Excuse the masks. I'm immunocompromised.
Her, sheepish: Oh, me, too. I have RA and I take immunosuppressants.
"We encourage families to make medical appointments outside of class time. Together, we support students in developing successful, lifelong habits."😬
I ran my own business for 10 years (with employees) and was manager of other staff for 20.
This is ... creepy. And ableist.
So, I'm pretty sure I'm healthier overall at this point with 5 vaccine doses and 0 COVID infections than I would be with 5 infections or even 4 vaccine doses and 1 infection.
And I can't believe this is even a debate.
Sickness is not health. Ever.
4/ She was lovely. Kind. Smart. Worried. A parent trying valiantly to do right thing & make sure her son got to be as 'normal' as possible.
I don't blame her one bit. I'm just so sad. And so fucking angry at govt's & public health everywhere (they live in HK, here for summer).
Me, dropping kids at school: So, um, call me if there seems to be a lot of pink eye, okay?
Kids: Mom, you can't go to school with pink eye! Only COVID.

Elena Rybakina, the current Wimbledon tennis champion has just pulled out of the French open with "a respiratory illness and fever." She announced this unmasked to a room of unmasked journalists. French Open going the way of the Giro d'Italia where many dropped out with covid?
The cruelty of all this is crushing me today.
People purposely not masking around clinically vulnerable folks.
School photographer harassing my kid and making her go back to class to get note from teacher so she didn't have to take mask off.
We have made a grave error in confusing our bodies' immune response to encountering a virus (e.g., fever, runny nose, cough) with the DISEASE caused by the virus (e.g., brain cell fusion).

So, both school admin assistants and the vice principal were in masks today. One of the admins was wearing a KN95 ...
Really great to see! But also ... they are the only staff with inside knowledge on absentee rates & reasons 😬
3/ She stayed for tea. My son kept his mask on while the boys played (near field protection). Safer than school with 20 maskless kids and poor ventilation 🤷♀️. We are blessed with a cross-breeze. It was windy in the house. HEPAs on. We sat kitty-corner, apart, at long table.
Holy shit everyone is sick out there.
Coughing, sneezing, nose blowing.
It's the May Long Weekend here. The unofficial start of summer. Not known as "Everyone is usually sick" weekend.
My son tried his best to stand his ground for school photos. The photographer said he wasn't allowed to take photos of the kids with their masks on 🤬
My son did say the photo station was fairly near a door opened to the outside, so fingers crossed.

Jokes on you. They meant Living WITH COVID. As in your body creating a home for SARS-CoV-2 virus several times a yr. Until you die. Early. Probably after lengthy chronic illness.
For the first time in months, weekly wastewater data released by the B.C. Centre for Disease Control shows increasing concentrations of COVID-19 at most monitored treatment plants around the province.

Our piano teacher just left our home. He arrived in, kept on, and left in his well-fitting KN95. Ventilation was excellent, HEPA on near the piano.
My home & our piano teacher should not have better infection control than a hospital.

Reminder. It's not the droplets that get you, it's the aerosols. Because physics. But where there are droplets (sneeze, barf, toilet flush, "body fluids"), there are probably aerosols.
That goes for COVID and every other disease attributed to droplets.
I don't know why so many freaked out about

MPX, tho? Persistent on surfaces & textiles, plus aerosols? That's got me 😬😬😬
My son, age 7:
Why are all the adults complaining about wearing a mask? I wear mine all day at school. And why don't they open windows more? It makes it safer.

As a parent with kids now several years past toddler / preschool age, I want to tell you IT IS NOT OKAY OR NORMAL to schlep your non-stop coughing kid everywhere.
For fuck sake, help them rest & recover AT HOME.
Our riskiest places are school and seeking healthcare.
It is not right that those are our most dangerous places.
They should be our safest.
Because big humans are supposed to protect little ones.
We wear our masks indoors. Always. We eat outdoors. We use a CO2 meter to help gage safer spaces (which include the cinema, major mall, and ... our home). Kids are in art, piano, tennis.

Excess deaths no one gives a shit about.
Adult hospitals making room for pediatric overflow rather than calling for masks (Jesus, what a mark of a depraved society)
Children's fever, pain relief, antibiotics shortages.
I think i have cried more days than not since May 2020.
Knowing most of my fellow humans, inc family and friends and colleagues and healthcare team, think I am acceptable collateral damage in their vicious quest for "Normal" has broken me.
The moral injury of considering that 90% of people wouldn't take the smallest step to protect someone else's life is huge- so if you are one of those people, and it isn't just apathy- please explain this to me. Because I don't want to live my life in a world that cares so little.
In case you think young people are less affected, while this is true in raw numbers, it's not for percentage excess mortality given that expected deaths are lower for younger age groups. From March 2020-Dec 2022, 21.4% more deaths in people under 45 occurred than expected.
So, if I need to take my kid to ER, we get whisked to a special area with swish IAQ & masks required?

I'm so unbearably worried for my children's future health, and cannot shake the worry? fear? I dont have an adequate word. The feeling, that I won't get to live long enough to shepherd them to adulthood. Because no one cares. Well, a very few do. But not enough. Not enough.

I still meet my son for outdoor lunch every day. When I suggested that next year, he can take his lunch outside on his own like big sis, he was sad. Turns out he loves connecting at lunch ❤️
I think we have very much mistakenly equated "socializing" with building relationships.
The more I think about this, the more angry & sad I get.

"And we should commit that our children will go to school come hell or high water."
She said the quiet part loud.
"With the pandemic now in its fourth year, it is clear the virus is likely to stay with us for many years to come – if not forever."
So, just to make sure this is crystal fucking clear, we are transitioning to FOREVER COVID.
