Seven years ago I met an amazing guy
@parkrunUK
Me, a blind runner and him my guiderunner. Over the miles we fell madly in love…
And yesterday we became husband & wife!
Thanks
@Southportpkrun
@DocRunner1
for introducing us & celebrating our special day.
#loveparkrun
♥️
Today I completed my 100th
#parkrun
I did my first aged 40 in 43 mins and now my PB is 22.35 just shows that anything is possible. If you’ve never run before give it a go!! As I am
#blind
#vi
I couldn’t have achieved any of this without my amazing
#guiderunners
! Thank you SO much
Just booked ‘passenger assistance’ for an early work trip to London tomorrow.
I’ve been left a voicemail to say this can’t be provided before 8am.
What? Do disabled not travel early morning then? 🤣
Imagine if all photos you saw on Twitter looked like this?
You’d feel like you were missing out, wouldn’t you?
I’m blind & this is what I see.
But YOU can change this by simply hitting the ALT (alternative text) button & adding an image description. It’s that easy!
This 👇 is why voting is completely inaccessible for
#blind
people
The tactile overlay did not align with the ballot paper boxes, meaning I couldn’t vote independently & required a sighted person to put the X in the box!
This really isn’t good enough.
#LocalElections2024
Today I was challenged (nicely) by a staff member on the
#Manchester
trams for not having a ticket.
I am
#blind
& was unable to access the ticket machine & couldn’t find a staff member to help.
@BeeNetwork
what should I do next time as I’m unable to buy a ticket independently?
Getting the train & staff member says to me ‘do you need assistance off the train’
Me ‘no thanks as my husband is getting on in a few stops’
Him ‘but won’t you both need assistance as your husband will be blind to’
Baffling that people make these misguided assumptions 🤣
This came up on my ‘memories’ from 6 yrs ago
I was new to running & it was my fifth
#parkrun
Last Saturday I did my 200th parkrun & how life has changed
I’m fitter, more confident & have learnt that being blind doesn’t stop me from running.
My message, give Parkrun a go!
I’m a mum, I’m in full-time work, I love to run, cycle, play cricket & more…
BUT I happen to be
#blind
Daily I face discrimination, barriers & judgement because my eyes don’t work
When will the Government
#NationalDisabilityStrategy
tackle the real problem? Attitudes.
I ‘love’ how kids just ask questions…
I’ve just had a lovely conversation with a little girl on the train who wanted to know all about my pink cane.
I explained that it helps me to see what’s in front of me as my eyes don’t work.
She told me she thought it was magical ♥️
As I walked through the park before I overheard a little girl saying
‘Daddy why has that girl got a pink stick?’
He simply replied ‘because it helps her to see’. A lovely response & so much better than the uaual ‘be quiet’ from parents. Asking questions is how kids learn.
@homofilm
What is this disgraceful tweet even about?? I did my degree in drama and guess what blind people can act and do pretty much anything don’t you know! The only thing that holds blind people back is attitudes like this!!
Screamed at and called a ‘disgrace’ by an abusive passerby this morning for using a
#PinkCane
apparently ‘
#blind
people shouldn’t care about colour’. We really do need to change perceptions of
#blindness
and lose the
#WhiteCane
stereotype
#vi
#sightloss
Why are eye hospitals ‘the’ most difficult places to navigate when you are
#blind
The irony of being told to go ‘over there’ or go to ‘appointment board A’ when you can’t see, is absolutely baffling!!
The amount of accounts that ‘still’ don’t use
#AltText
is unbelievable.
Hearing the word ‘image’ as a
#blind
Twitter user is so boring!
No description is the equivalent of you seeing this 👇
It’s not quite as interesting as all the photographs you scroll through, is it?
It makes me smile when I hear people saying ‘these face masks are such a pain, I just can’t read anyone’s facial expressions’ - this is just a small insight into what it’s like being blind. We can ‘never’ see people’s faces, but you can pick up so much in a voice! Learn to listen
My partner (and guiderunner) Mike is always supporting & championing my running achievements.
But today it’s about him!
He has just completed the
#TokyoMarathon
& received his 6 star World Majors Marathon medal.
So proud. What an awesome achievement ♥️♥️♥️
I never expected our story to end up in The Sunday Times
@thetimes
Let’s hope it inspires a few people to take up running or guide running
Or even better, to believe they can fall in love again when they’re least expecting it 💕
#blind
#guiderunner
You do know that
#AltText
is to help
#blind
people understand what your photo is of, right?
Your
#AltText
says;
Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia.
I have just asked someone who can see and it isn’t.
Maybe use image descriptions in the right context eh?
When you’re told that the coloured cane you are using is ‘confusing’ for members of the public.
Oh, sorry (not sorry) but I didn’t realise my cane was for other people, I thought it was to help me get around 🤣
#blind
#cane
#ColouredCane
So, since Mike and I got married our story has been covered lots.
Our hope is that it’ll get more people into guide running and more
#blind
&
#PartiallySighted
people getting active….
Here’s a feature we did with The Telegraph, out today.
Today I was stopped by a member of the public who asked if my cane was pink because I’m ’in training’
In training for what? Being
#blind
? 🤣
I love how people’s minds work sometimes!
There really does need to be more awareness that NOT all canes are white though 💕
This will be the best tour I have ever done, grab your tickets to “THE MATT GOSS EXPERIENCE.” My MG 15 piece Big Band & the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra live on stage!! All the hits & songs I have fallen in love with throughout this journey.
❤️
Despite being
#vi
#blind
I love knowing what’s in photographs colours, people, scenery, what they look like etc. However when people on
#twitter
don’t add
#imageDescriptions
it’s really disappointing to just hear
#voiceover
say ‘image’. It would be a bit like you seeing this pic
You’d have to be pretty sad to lie about being
#blind
right?
So why is it that ‘local’ running races / events are now asking for medical proof of being blind, so that you can have a
#GuideRunner
with you?
I’d rather not bother!
Today I’ve been at Manchester Piccadilly speaking to the BBC to raise the concerns of
#blind
&
#PartiallySighted
people over ticket office closures at railway stations.
You can help halt these closures by following this link
Getting accused of ‘not looking blind’ is so frustrating!
What do you want me to look like then? How does blind even look?
Must I apologise for taking pride in my appearance despite not being able to see?
Do we ‘really’ still have these stereotypes in 2022? Sadly, yes!
So this conversation happened today.
‘You’re blind?’
Me ‘yes’
Him ‘but…you look nice & you’ve got make up on and you just look…good’
Me; sigh
I’d love to know what a ‘blind woman’ is meant to look like…but I really couldn’t be bothered asking 🤣
This is what I love about
#parkrun
…it really is for everyone
Today as I finished running
@mike_wright30
(who is also
#blind
) was first time volunteering as a barcode scanner.
If you’re
#VI
& want to run, walk or volunteer at your local parkrun then you absolutely can 👍
@mrdanwalker
I’m so glad! I’m blind and I always wear a face covering in shops but I feel really worried when I can hear other people getting too close to me, as I have no idea if they too are warring a mask. This ruling will make me feel more at ease.
@BeeNetwork
Thanks. All sounds a bit complicated. Would be great if you could think about making day tickets available on the app or even better make the ticket machines accessible for blind people
@AndyBurnhamGM
So, the ‘white cane’ is always associated with
#blind
&
#VisuallyImpaired
people…
But guess what? Canes come in a variety of colours and here’s my collection!
They’re exactly the same as white canes…they’re just not white!
Colour matters even when you can’t see 💕
Does anyone else who is
#blind
#vi
ever find a film they ‘really’ want to watch, only to discover it has no
#AudioDescription
?
Imagine providing a film to someone who can see, where the screen is just black throughout? There’d be uproar!
Really enjoyed sharing my story & being part of
#VisionaryConference23
’s ‘Power of Sport’ panel today
Great to hear so much enthusiasm in the room from local sight loss charities, keen to get more
#blind
&
#PartiallySighted
people involved in sport & physical activity.
@saj_anderson
@BeeNetwork
Also a good idea. I don’t like feeling like I’ve avoided paying for something. Always happy to pay, it just needs to be accessible
What an honour it was to be invited to No 10 Downing Street today for
#parkrun
’s 20th birthday & to celebrate all the fantastic work that the amazing parkrun volunteers do.
And, it was great to take part in Downing street’s first (and only)
#parkrun
#LoveParkrun
🏃🏃♀️
I’m blind & when crossing roads that don’t beep my only option is to put my hand under the box & wait for the ‘rotating cone’ to start spinning
I’m fed up of getting to roads & finding the cone has gone
Why do people pull these off? Try crossing with your eyes shut instead!!
Another Sunday trying to book passenger assistance for an early Monday morning work trip, only to be told AGAIN it’s not provided before 7am.
Advised to go the train and find a crew member (how, I’m blind?) or go to the ticket office & someone may be able to help!
Really?
Today we completed the wettest and windiest 10k I’ve ever done (the Windmill 10k in
#Lytham
)
The wind was so loud I couldn’t hear & my hand so cold I couldn’t feel the tether.
BUT we had loads of laughs and that’s what it’s all about.
#blind
#guiderunner
#running
When you feel utter dread over going into work because the systems you are now being asked to use are completely inaccessible with
#ScreenReaders
and it just makes you feel devalued & incapable.
Anyone else who is
#blind
#VI
ever feel this way?
Well, that’s the Liverpool half marathon done - oh my god it was hard. I am NEVER doing another half without training!
But at least we got round and finished 👏 well done
@RoseMac01
too (my second unofficial guide) 👍
#Blind
#BlindRunner
#GuideRunner
@saj_anderson
@BeeNetwork
No I wasn’t. She said I’d have to get off the tram and I explained I only didn’t get a ticket as I couldn’t use the machine so she told me to sit back down. Then came back over later and we had a good chat about how inaccessible it is.
I was dreading Southport half marathon this morning due to the long, boring route…
It was very hot BUT I really enjoyed it…
Why?
Because I was running in my hometown I was cheered on by lots of lovely friends I’ve made
@Southportpkrun
and
#SouthportStrollers
running club
I was recently asked if it’s ‘boring running when you’re
#blind
’
I was reminded at
#parkrun
this morning just how wrong that assumption was…
#running
appeals to many other senses
I loved the feel of the sun on my face, the sound of the birds singing, chatting & much more.
@Tanni_GT
@LordOrk
It’s getting worse isn’t it. I’ve just tried to book for 6:30am tomorrow as usual no assistance & told to go to the train and find a crew member. I book assistance because I’m blind and therefore can’t find the train, let alone identify a crew member 🤣
Hi
@AvantiWestCoast
I’ve just been on your (very delayed) 17:30 from London Euston to Preston service.
I am blind and just wanted to feedback how amazingly helpful your train manager and on-board shop staff were to me. Great service & much appreciated. Thank you.
Applying make-up & skincare products can be tricky when you’re
#blind
or
#PartiallySighted
Today our Greater Manchester Sight Loss Council met with
@Kiehls
&
@LancomeUK
staff & are looking forward to working with these (and other brands) going forward!
Watch this space…
I love my
#Alexa
and how an everyday home product can make life so accessible for anyone who is
#blind
#VI
Through the ‘show and tell’ feature Alexa will tell you what you are holding up to the camera.
@amazon
@RNIB
@Henshaws
I always get a bit anxious walking round
#London
on my own.
But today I have been genuinely overwhelmed by the kindness of members of the public who’ve guided me over busy roads & round building work.
THANK YOU!
When you’re
#blind
this kind of help really means a lot
I have set up a Facebook group for anyone who is
#blind
or
#VisuallyImpaired
& uses
#AccessToWork
to see if collectively we can overcome the issues & barriers that many of us are facing.
Together we are stronger.
If you’re on Facebook & would like to join please comment or DM.
A lovely morning
@Southportpkrun
running & catching up with friends.
Wasn’t sure if I’d ever manage to run sub-25 again…so I was very pleased this morning when I did 👍
Marathon training must be paying off!
#BlindRunner
#GuideRunner
#parkrun
🏃♀️
1/2 It’s hard to believe that less than 5 years ago I had never ever run before!
Now I ‘love’ weekends like this, which started with a
#parkrun
yesterday & the
#Windmill10k
in Lytham today.
I feel fitter (and happier) in my 40’s than I’ve ever been.
Tonight Merseyside
@SLCouncils
visited
#Beavers
in
#Southport
to help complete their ‘disability awareness badge’
We talked about sight loss, canes, braille & guide dogs
And they had a go at guiding each other.
They asked some great questions about what it’s like being blind
@sophielouisecc
What about all the young people in education, with part-time jobs and those who already volunteer? There’s an assumption here that kids are all the same and they’re absolutely not!
Everyone should have a ‘choice’
Lovely morning
#run
And with an empty
#SouthportPier
I was able to ‘let go’ of
@AstroMYK
& run solo using his voice & the wooden planks underfoot to keep me running straight! Open space & audible guiding might be a great way for other
#blind
#VI
people to run socially distanced!
Last Saturday (following our shout out for guide runners) six blind and partially sighted runners and walkers went to
@Princesparkrun
with SEVEN brand new / first time guides who all did amazing 👏
#blind
#BlindRunner
#GuideRunner
Here’s what happened
Second session of blind baseball (I’ve got a lot to learn yet…) but, here’s a small snapshot of how it’s played.
It’s all about following sound in the ball & at each base.
And it’s GREAT to have the chance to run independently instead of being tethered to a guide.
Really productive meeting this morning with members of the Greater Manchester Sight Loss Council
@SLCouncils
&
@manarndale
around inclusion & accessibility for
#blind
&
#PartiallySighted
shoppers
We are really looking forward to working together.
Turned up to a work meeting today, cane in hand.
The person I’m meeting with asks me ‘do you drive Kelly?’
As I sweep my cane across the floor to check for obstacles I reply ‘no, I’m blind. Hence the cane I am using’
I really do wonder sometimes! 🤣
#blind
#vi
Fantastic to see
@networkrail
have introduced tactile maps at Manchester Piccadilly train station this is great for
#blind
&
#PartiallySighted
people
Greater Manchester
@SLCouncils
have just found it really useful to locate different areas across the station.
Great work 👍
Great to be part of this video
What a fantastic initiative!
Thanks to my GP
@DocRunner1
for getting me involved in
#Parkrun
Since taking up running I’m more confident, fitter, happier, more sporty & being

doesn’t stop me
I also met my amazing partner Mike at

about how linking GP practices across 🇬🇧 has transformed lives
Participants

Great morning of parkrun tourism
@bheadparkrun
with around 700 other runners.
Nice busy parkrun and a lovely course 👏

Hi
@RNIB
I just wanted to say a HUGE thank you to your Legal Rights Service, they have been truly ‘amazing’ in helping me with an accessibility/discrimination case. I couldn’t have done it on my own. Thank you!
I distinctly remember saying that I’d never run another marathon - as they are just ‘so’ hard.
A girl can change her mind right?
This September I’ll be running Berlin Marathon for
@YLvsCancer
Please help if you can 👇
