Every cat 5 landfall in the US was a tropical storm 48 hours before landfall which means RI occured. While this will likely not happen with Laura, the stage is set for potential RI and potentially up to landfall. This is difficult to forecast and the timing will be crucial.

Update: Family is okay. House is okay. Water got about 2 inches into the garage. Another foot or two and we would be in the house. Naples is a wreck. The south end of Marco is likely a mess from surge. Water is receding slowly. After a few breakdowns and 36 hours I can sleep.

1. There’s your likely 10 foot surge. 2.the biggest thing and the hardest part of surge people can’t grasp is how fast this occurs. The water comes up incredibly quick. From onset to completly inundated can be 30 minutes and it just keeps coming.

@TwisterKidMedia Just a working theory but I think the moisture was actually too deep. Relativly moist upper boundary layer is very dixie of okalahoma with relativly high WBZs for the plains (approx 10,000 ft). Weak SRI early on + non-existant RFD.

The effects of #Laura ’s storm surge in SW Louisiana is visible on satellite. The top image is Tuesday and the bottom image is now. Note the temporary regression of the coastline. This water will gradually retreat into the Gulf, but this shows how big of an impact surge can have.

This is honestly disappointing journalism. Every complain here is about the headline for a SLIGHT risk. The definition for a SLIGHT risk is "Increased confidence that severe storms will contain damaging winds, severe hail, and/or Tornado Potential."

Today is gonna be a really really long day for the deep south. Never a good sign when you have likely sig hailers at 230 AM. Storms went from showers to 70 DBZ at 30 kft in a couple scans. Add in splits and this is gonna be an unusual sig hail morning and will just roll all day.

The hot seat is frustrating at times. Things don’t happen you way you anticipate and your calibration is thrown off. You begin to second guess yourself. People say there’s a “over warning” issue and yet all of these and I’m gonna walk away with probably a 75% far.

Holy crap this is a radar image for the books. 1 confirmed tor, two cyclic supercells, two mesos trying to form. All right next to KTLX at night. Imagine if this was daytime what people would be seeing. Saving that one!

Yeah there were some long track supercells. Pardon my awful GIS I've been up since well this event started and been wanting to play with this so why not use it to stay awake on midnights. Tor reports + MRMS show 3 long tracks and about 5-8 other tracks. Longest >270 miles.
