The Acting Administrator of NOAA is literally seeking out and connecting with NOAA employees and DMing them his support personally.
Think about how much time that must take, and on a Sunday. Now THAT is what I call leadership. 👏

LIFE NEWS TIME! 👀
My last 6 months included a trip to Hawaii, New Zealand, my first cruise,
#NWAS23
, & re-election to the NWA Board.
And to round out my 2023, I am thrilled to announce that I will be heading to
@NWSWestern
to serve as a RRPS in Salt Lake City!
So excited to announce I'll be moving to Las Vegas to begin a new chapter in my career as a Lead Forecaster! 🤓
I always wanted to come back to Austin to do what I fell in love with when I moved here and I did. Now it's on to the next challenge! Can't wait to get started! 😁
Not to belittle or demean, but this is an excellent teaching moment...
A week ago, one run of the GFS weather model produced a hurricane making landfall near Galveston. Today, we have 0% chance of cyclone activity. (1/x)
Reporter: "Can you tell me a little about this Saharan dust we're experiencing?"

Now that the

This is a whole lot of science awesomeness in one radar loop. 👀

Everyone needs to spend a few minutes today reading the comments our female broadcaster colleagues contributing to
#morethanababe
today are receiving.
This is their everyday. It's not being dramatic, it's an incessant cacophony of disregard, objectification, and misogyny.
We had up to 11 different people, from 11 different NWS offices simultaneously diving into social media to support
@NWSBrownsville
and
@NWSLakeCharles
remotely today as initial impacts began. This support will continue until it's no longer needed...

Voyager 2 is traveling at 35970mph. 😗
That's nearly 600 miles/min. 😶
That's 10 miles/sec. 😲
(That's faster than you'd be able to see go by)
...and yet it took > 41 YEARS to get outside our solar system. 😳
So remember that as you consider the gravity of what this means. 😵
For the second time in history, a human-made object has reached the space between the stars. Now slightly more than 11 billion miles (18 bil. km) from Earth,

Just saw Jupiter in focus in my telescope for the first time. Didn't realize you could see the moons so well too! I couldn't make out the spot but could definitely see delineated white and red bands! So much geekery right now. (Looked about half this size)

Another mass bid of
@NWS
entry level forecasters jobs has hit the streets!
There are a lot of opinions, frustrations, questions about how this process works. I've been to 4 offices and bid on SEVERAL more so here's what I have learned so far...
AMS Board of Operational Government Meteorologists
I hear two sides not acknowledging the other's main thesis...
1. There is an overall, growing disregard/disdain for education and true subject matter expertise. Why? Creativity + following can validate credibility for a fraction of the cost of a degree, or even make you money.
What do you think? Am I giving bad advice when I suggest for new storm chasers to pursue a degree in meteorology? I get a lot of pushback when I suggest this. It’s possible everyone knows everything there is to know already, or the university system is broken. Thoughts?
Having the

meso sectors over this last night was one of the many reasons I do what I do. Watching a devastating natural disaster unfold with breathtaking resolution. Also, knowing these data can help other scientists study their science
@janinekrippner
@jessphoenix2018
I was thinking about what to do for my personal
#SafePlaceSelfie
this year and it occurred to me that one of the SAFEST places I can be is at work surrounded by all the data!
Harvey: Category 4 Hurricane at landfall.
Imelda: Tropical Storm
Categories don't equal impacts.
Also, journalists, stop quoting people saying "it's worse than Harvey". Minimalizing a catastrophe to capitalize on recency bias for ratings is hardly helping.
While not encompassing the entire tropical rainfall event for either, here's a comparison of the accumulated 3-day rainfall from Hurricane Harvey, and the 3-day rainfall (since early 9/16/19) from Tropical Storm
#Imelda
. 4-day total rainfall comparisons will be provided tomorrow.
Starting the power hour of my last shift at
@NWSSanAntonio
! It's been amazing serving the place that I originally fell in love with weather and it's been a pleasure working with my colleagues in the office, on TV in Austin and San Antonio, and EM partners! Farewell! ✌️
Welp, I made it almost 3 full years without a positive COVID test, but turns out my post

I've tried to text everyone I was around but I don't have numbers for everyone. So hopefully this is seen by many. 🙏
So last night, Las Vegas held their annual

celebration which attracts 350k+ people to the Strip and downtown. Myself,
@ChelseaKryston
and
@WeathaMan1234
all deployed across town to support core partners during this huge event. Here's a thread about that experience....
Just got disqualified for a position on USAJobs for the EXACT SAME RESUME that I was referred with on the EXACT SAME JOB a few months ago.
It really is the wild wild west for making panels these days... 🙄
I already knew
@wx_becks
was brave but standing up in front of us & allowing herself to get fully vulnerable/exposed, so that our next generation can feel more prepared for their careers/lives..damn.
If you have the chance to befriend her, do it. You'll be better for it.

Please, again, tell me how adding personality to a tweet is unprofessional & doesn't help engagement/awareness to the forecast...
Perfectly fine tweet here w/a whopping 9 engagements. Their Talking Heads version? Over 400 plus 39 responses. Basically identical wx and graphic.
On mids this year for

Day so decided to wear all of our deployment safety equipment!
Also, mother Earth made humans, who made the

That time I went out to prepare the balloon at 4AM singing Lionel Richie's "Hello" at the top of my lungs with headphones in.
Stopped for a second to hear if the balloon was full to hear someone in the distance scream "SHUT THE %&$^ UP!!"

Not pointing the finger, but the science is clear and has been for decades. Every doctor I've had has recommended I find other employment. Now
@WHO
calls it a probable carcinogen?
IMO, this should be our
#1
strategic priority. Evolving past the shift work paradigm.
“The link between lack of sleep and cancer is now so strong that the World Health Organization has classified any form of nighttime shift work as a probable carcinogen."
My favorite local Thai place literally called me to tell me they haven't seen me around and miss me. So I ordered something and now I'm having Thai for dinner. 😊
I really can't overstate the impact
@GCarbin
has had on the *entire* wx enterprise, not just the NWS. Don't believe me? Check out the comments yourself. You'll be hard pressed to find *anyone* he hasn't taken his time to get to know personally. One of a kind mentor and person.
I'll be retiring from a rewarding career with
@NWS
at the end of May '24. Here's a great gig with

Definition of Probability of Precipitation (that is used in NWS)
The probability that 0.01" of rain will occur at a point within a defined time range.
That's it. It tells you nothing else.

Year after year, the

Social Media Committee is furiously typing away to bring you all the key points if you're not able to attend! Don't shake their hands though, they hurt... 🤣

Thank you everyone for the texts and tweets! I'm honored to have earned your vote for 2024 and am absolutely ecstatic to work with Presidents
@BKarrickWX
@BeccMaz
and

@elisevj
and Katurah for the next 3 years! 🙏
Election results are in... 🥁🥁🥁
Becca Mazur is the 2024 President-Elect and will serve as president in '25. Trevor Boucher, Katurah McCants, Elise Schultz and Ryan Vaughan will serve as directors for the years of 2024-26. Their terms start on 1/1/24.
Jamie Rhome: Commonly agreed upon talking points: Don't focus on the cone, focus on the hazards.
What percentage of hurricane coverage focuses on the cone versus the hazards?

I used to think the same thing when I was in college...
"This is a waste of my time and money. I'm here to get a job! 😡"
No joke, first interview question out of college:
"We see you minored in ASL and Deaf culture, we could really use that here at NWS Nashville"
Me: 😗
If we hate the cost of college so much, let’s get rid of all gen Eds that are unrelated to a major. Why do I have to take a music class when my major is meteorology? It makes no sense and is a huge waste of money. HS is for broad education, college is for specialization.
I will greatly miss my friends, partners, & colleagues at the
@NWSVegas
office. My experience in Vegas has been one of the most rewarding of my career, working events such as Hurricane Hilary, Labor Day Weekend 2023, the 2022/2023 Monsoon & AR Train, and more.

We seriously need to have a
#ShareYourStory
session at a conference that's just an open mic of people willing to share their experience becoming a met.
It sure wouldve been nice to know at the time I wasn't a complete failure because I couldn't derive the 3D wave equation.
I love that people are talking about this. You should obviously do your best in school. I've seen 4.0 grads who struggled in business because they couldn't adapt. I've seen 2.5 grads flourish because of the desire to learn and could get along with everyone.
Next stop, Savannah for
#IAEM22
! For you NWS'rs wanting to know what this conference is like, I'll be doing my usual thing live-tweeting the highlights. 🤓
In lite of

This is a societal phenomenon I just can't comprehend. What compels a person to stoop to childish, bully-like name calling, attacking a person's physical appearance publicly? Because your dumbass show was momentarily interrupted while you were eating Cheetos?
Yesterday 2 people died due to flooding. 2 tornadoes caused damage. Unfortunately, I had to cover The Masked Singer to warn people about the dangerous conditions moving in. Here are some comments I received while on air. I will always put lives ahead of a TV show.
I was told this week that I was the Kevin Bacon of meteorology. I sure hope that was a compliment and I have been seen as an ally to my introvert colleagues. 😂
#AMS2023
That being said, you don't need a degree to be a scientist, be a steward of the science or be respected in the field of the science.
But if you do not *respect* it AND your peers criticisms, you aren't going to get it back. Period.
Dr. Anthony Fauci lays out three ways future scientific communicators can build trust:
1) Always go by the data
2) Admit when you don't know something
3) The goal is not to show how smart you are. It's to get people to understand what you're talking about.
#FauciAtYale
2. The lack of respect for expertise in today's society is a MAJOR danger to any science. A degree is not just some piece of paper, it's a 4-10+ year pursuit of how to learn as your *main* job.
How to formulate a hypothesis, test it, form conclusions and *accept peer criticism*
Spent a summer working for TTU surveying and scouting locations for these seismic stations in west and north Texas. My one contribution to the field of seismology...
Check out this thread explaining this project and how seismic waves behave on a hemispheric scale. 🤓
Honest question to all my colleagues:
When you're sharing your thoughts/analysis on Twitter regarding a weather event, at any range, for any situation, who are you talking to exactly?
The public? Your colleagues? Nobody in particular, just thinking out loud?
Just recently learned I was invited to co-chair the
@ametsoc
's Weather Ready Nation Symposium! Can't wait to get start brainstorming for
#AMS20
and beyond! 😁
Office brag:

on-site for two large events this weekend simultaneously. I'm at the Life is Beautiful music festival this weekend (pictured) and Andy Gorelow is roughing it over at the Alienstock/StormArea51 event.

Without passing judgment or projecting your own privilege, try to objectively think about this. We can debate about timing/planning of evacuations, etc. but it's irrelevant if it isn't possible in the first place. 👇

One of those is
