Lots of folks seem perplexed by how there's "no updraft" above it. There is an updraft, it's just heavily tilted. Tornadoes tilt at the end of their lives as low-level storm-relative winds advect the low-level circulation away from the parent storm. Ex:

40 minutes. That's all it took for an elevated convective blob over Grand Traverse Bay become a killer tornadic supercell. It's easy to see an obvious parameter space for tornadoes, but there are so many subtleties that we still don't understand, that days like today depend on.
