A real exchange I had with HR today:
HR: we can accommodate all your limitations in the office.
Me: but I canβt driveβ¦
HR: its an employeeβs responsibility to ensure they can get to work before accepting the role

FUNGUS IN SPACE!!! ππ
Equal parts cosmic horror and nature being metal, let's talk about the lichen that grew on the OUTSIDE of the International Space Station!
Get your tea and curl up, because I PROMISE you wanna hear about these fungal cosmonauts π§βπ
π§΅
Me: Mom, I might date women, if I get the chance
Mom: GOOD FOR YOU! Women are so much better than men. I wish I could date women.
Me: uh....
Mom: all the most intimate relationships I've had are with women. They're just more powerful connection, you know?
Me: ...
I thought I was so lucky not to have been bullied in school β and then I was chatting with an old friend and they were like βwut? You were bullied relentlesslyβ β turns out it was Mean Girlβ’οΈ bullying and my autistic ass just didnβt notice ππ
Mom: and women actually take CARE of themselves and are so BEAUTIFUL versus men who are just these scraggly ---
Me: ok ok. I'm glad you're chill that I'm bi.
Mom: you're BISEXUAL!?
π Convo at work today:
Person: why do red mushrooms have polka dots?
Me: ok I have to warn you, this is my special interest, I canβt answer unless you have 30 mins to spare
P: 30 mins for a plant?
Me: plant? Nvm I need an hour. At least.
There are fungi at Chernobyl that EAT radiation and nuclear fallout β and thatβs only the start of this wild story πβ’οΈ
Buckle up for a wild thread about radioactive boars, fungal space suits, radiation-detecting fungi, black frogs and a good dose of hope! π§΅
Mom: help! I accidentally called this woman at work -- sorry this THEY -- "her" but I should have called her "they" & I feel TERRIBLE
Me: do you want to practice using their pronouns?
Mom: should I send her -- THEY -- a fruit basket?
Me: for the love of god, no
Every day is more absurd and this HR lady keeps βas per my last emailβing me but like MAAM thereβs NO WAY youβre reading this and thinking it makes any sense
To everyone doing autism self-assessments and saying "these questions are poorly phrased-- they could have multiple interpretations and that really frustrates me" ... have I got news for you π¬
βSo sorry we didnβt invite you to the party π I must have forgotten about you πβ
βNo worries! Everyone makes mistakes!β
βUh, yeah π Everyone was talking about you.β
βOh wow, thatβs kind! Wanna see this cool rock I found?β
head empty as psychological self-preservation ππ
π³π³LIQUID TREES ARE COOL, y'all are just haters: a thread.π³π³
This tweet went viral and twitter got mad as heck about it. "But we love trees!" they cried. But they are actually really cool and here's why: (1/14)
Amanita muscaria (fly agaric) is a cool mushroom & all (reindeer guard their patches so they can trip on it!) but I'm tired of every pop-culture mushroom being the same red-cap with white-warts design. For your consideration, other pretty mushrooms π§΅
Mom: flowers, then?
Me: a misgender bouquet? no! Just apologize and use the right pronouns next time.
Mom: Ok, I'll definitely call her "they" next time. For sure.
Me: π
Mom: ... did I do it again?
Me: yup.
Mom: JESUSMOTHERFUCKINGCHRISTONA--
Me: Mom, I have a crush on a girl. Am I gay?
Mom: that's normal. Women are just so pretty, everyone has crushes on them. It's not gay.
Me: wait, what?
Mom: EVERYONE gets romantic feelings for their female friends -- it's just because the relationship is so POWERFUL
Me: π³
@noblelittledude
She's said she wishes she were gay so that she could date women ... like ... WHAT DOES SHE THINK "GAY" IS, IF NOT WOMEN WHO WANT TO DATE WOMEN?
A quick note about employment discrimination. They never SAY βyou canβt work here because youβre disabledβ, they just make the environment increasingly hostile and refuse to accommodate your needs as a disabled person. And you have to self advocate CONSTANTLY while being gaslit β
Yup, turns out that 6 kinds of fungi had managed to join the team uninvited, and they quickly adapted to their new environment.
While this might sound creepy, it was SO EXCITING for astrobiologists! We had PROOF that fungi could THRIVE in space!
Around 2012, the lichen 'Xanthoria elegans' (commonly known as the Elegant Sunburst Lichen!) was attached to exterior of the International Space Station for 18 months AND SURVIVED!
With no water, no air, extreme temperatures and constant bombardment with radiation!
The BEST PART is that the lichen didn't go into stasis, but kept right on photosynthesizing. Just chomp πchomp π chompin' π on that unfiltered sunlight.
Lichen might be the TOUGHEST organism on earth. But what even is πlichenπ?
The European Space Agency is heading up the The Lichens and Fungi Experiment (LIFE ... god I love nerds), specifically testing how fungi behave in space and in Mars-like conditions.
Lichen is actually a composite organism, meaning that itβs actually a plant (algae) or bacteria (cyanobacteria) who has joined forces with a fungus (or a few fungi).
Lichen are classified as fungus, but have many of the benefits of being a plant AND a fungus.
Perhaps the most mesmerising, the Schizophyllum commune (Splitgill Commune). They have 23,328 biological sexes (distinct mating types) -- individuals of any mating type are compatible for mating with most other mating types. They remind me of ballgowns and fractals.
Lichen are a big deal on earth. First off, theyβre GORGEOUS but also they cover 6β8% of Earth's land surface! We know of 20000 species but there are likely MANY MANY MORE.
We estimate that weβve only discovered 10% of fungi, as opposed to 85% of plants.
Fungi canβt make their own food, but plants do it all the time through photosynthesis. And plants struggle to gather nutrients from their environment, but fungi kicks ass at that. So they teamed up and formed a whole kind of super fungus!
The substance KEPT GROWING, destroying the window's titanium-quartz surface and GETTING INTO THE SPACE STATION!
Listen, I know you're thinking π½aliensπ½, but it was the opposite: these were just piggyback astronauts who'd hitched a ride from Earth.
Starting at the beginning:
In 1988, we first learned that fungi could survive in outer space in a VERY DRAMATIC WAY. Astronauts on the Russian space station Mir saw a strange film spreading across the OUTSIDE of a window.
This feels like something from the Magnus Archives π¨
Nowadays, there are pretty robust anti-fungal measures to keep our sporing friends from joining space crews uninvited. Even if they're super cool, typically we want to keep our space missions sterile.
UNLESS! (now you say it)
Did you know mushrooms can stab through rock?πͺπͺ¨
Fungi's "roots", called hyphae, can bore right through stone and played a significant role in creating soil.
Yup, thats right, mushrooms are older than dirt. They MADE dirt.
IM ABOUT TO TELL YOU ABOUT THESE RAD STABBY BOYS π§΅
I may have just lost my job because Iβm autistic.
I have a masters in my field and Iβm advanced in my career. Iβm devastated and so embarrassed about how it went down and how many senior executives now have my medical info.
Please send mushroom pics. Iβm going to go cry now.
Fungi are INCREDIBLE at dealing with radiation. Lichen can survive 12000x the dose that would kill a human.
We also think some fungi (including mushrooms) might EAT radiation through β’οΈradiosynthesisβ’οΈ. Let's take a quick detour to the Chernobyl disaster site.
Those space lichen were outside for 18 months, and about 35% survived. And if that seems low, I want to remind you that the rate for animals and plants is 0% --
BUT THERE IS MORE! There was a sub-group that was in "mars-like conditions" and 70% of THOSE survived!
Next step? MUSHROOM HOUSES ON MARS!
NASA is investigating myco-architecture. Imagine human explorers bringing dormant fungi, adding water on arrival allowing the fungi to grow around a framework into a fully functional human habitat!
It's like a chia pet house!
Fun fact, a lot of things we call moss are actually lichen ("reindeer moss", "Iceland moss"). Also peat moss isnβt moss, but at least that one really is a plant. For more MOSS FACTS read Gathering Moss by Robin Wall Kimmerer. BUT BACK TO LICHEN!
In 1991, remotely piloted robots discovered a black fungus growing INSIDE one the Chernobyl reactors. The black colour was caused by melanin, the same pigment in human skin, eyes and hair than helps US withstand radiation!
Further research revealed that these fungi grew faster when exposed to more radiation. They weren't growing DESPITE the radiation, but BECAUSE of it!
We found that cryptococcus neoformans was so good at it, we got curious if we could use this to our own advantage.
It's heartbreaking how so many disabled people got better jobs during the pandemic because they didn't have to disclose or ask for accommodations w/ WFH ... and now that Corporate has decided it's back to the office, we're somehow lacking.
But no, they would never discriminate.
BACK TO SPACE!
NASA sent these melanized fungi to space in 2016, and determined that the fungi could cut radiation levels on the ISS by ~2%!
They EAT the radiation and that could be really important for other organisms at risk of radiation sickness.
@EmilyBanting1
I still haven't figured out what she thinks bisexuality is, but she thinks it's a very EXTREME label since everyone is attracted to women *a little*
(spoiler: they aren't, she's just also bi)
Update: we put Maritime Sunburst Lichen in simulated mars conditions, and it's live laugh lovin' it.
"Results indicated that the production of antioxidants, along with the occurrence of photoprotection mechanisms, guarantee X. parietina survivability in Mars-like environment."
@Spontyyy
They've changed the job so that it's no longer remote. That's the thing I'm trying to right them for. It's just funny that i was somehow supposed to know this before they did it.
The TERFs found my mushroom thread and are mad about Schizophyllum commune having 23000 sexes. I want to clarify whatβs going on there as best I can. Their genome has 2 loci that determine sex, called βAβ and βBββ BUT THATS ONLY THE BEGINNING π§΅
For context, this is a half-joke. Autistic people struggle with ambiguity, and I find these assessments irritatingly ambiguous. Just because you struggle with ambiguity doesn't mean you're autistic, but it could be evidence in that direction if you have many other traits.
Gliophorus psittacinus (parrot toadstool) look like green glass over bright yellow gills. They're edible, but don't taste like much and are a bit slimy, so it's best just to admire their gorgeous glassy sheen. They grow in mossy patches, lawns and cemeteries.

@JoCat105
As a gay, I love/hate that "seeing women as people" and "thinking women are the best" = gay --- it's like homophobic allyship and I'm so confused
@TheRealPoloBlue
ok this happened to me too -- a guy came up to me up to me once and said "give me your money" and I said "oh, sorry, I don't have change" and walked away.
It took me a few hours to realise he was trying to mug me.
Unrelated but cool: while looking around in 2016, they found BLACK FROGS! Eastern tree frogs (Hyla orientalis) which are normally bright green had rapidly evolved to have way more melanin. Nature is rad as heck.
If you're LICHEN this content π check out my other threads here:
And it's my bday this week if you want to buy me presents π₯³π
AND NEXT TIME YOU SEE LICHEN, tell it "damn, well done," because it DESERVES it.
Are you here for educational threads, frequently (but not always) related to mushrooms? Then bookmark this tweet bc Iβm going to try to qrt all my threads in replies to keep them accessible π«‘
How? Why? What are they DOING in there?? And why are the fungi black?
In 2007, a group of researchers found the fungi had melanin (yup, just like humans do) that was converting energy from ionizing radiation into usable chemical energy. They use pigment to EAT IT! πβ’οΈ
Entoloma hochstetteri (blue pinkgill or werewere-kokako in Maori) is one of the few naturally occurring bright blues in nature <3 And its spores are pink! Look at how DAPPER they are.
Most people know that some mushrooms are poisonous, but did you know that some are CARNIVOROUS? ππ§ Carnivorous fungi derive some of their nutrients from trapping and eating small animals. They use active and passive traps to do this. Let's talk about them! π§΅
Coprinus comatus (shaggy ink cap) -- their cap is this textured white to black gradient that looks like a scene kids hair and I'm obsessed. AND they melt into useable ink after being picked!
There are fungi that eat microplastics!
There are fungi that clean oil spills!
There are fungi that break down mining waste!
There are fungi that remove heavy metals & e. coli from water!
FUNGI CAN DO ANYTHING πππ§‘
First: it was never meant to replace trees. The viral tweet blatantly misrepresented this, as did a lot of the reporting. It's meant to be used in places where trees can't survive. Trees often struggle in urban areas and can cause lots of problems for the community. (2/14)
On a more personal note, I'm a big fan on Solarpunk, a movement that envisions a sustainable future where technology, nature and community are interconnected and harmonious. And if you ask me, Liquid Trees are solarpunk af ππ€ (14/14)
Vindication!
After YEARS of my quiet feud with Amanita Muscaria π, Unicode has announced that they will be introducing a BROWN MUSHROOM EMOJI.
But whatβs wrong with π, you ask? BUCKLE UP to learn about this mushroomβs cultural cachet, its weird poison and why I hate its name.
@ladamenoire
oh I know, I'm actually super grateful lol I have enough trauma, I'm glad I didn't compound it with that stuff. And now that I'm an adult, it's just kinda funny in hindsight.
Marasmius Haematocephalus makes me think of careful origami. They can shrivel up during dry conditions and wait for rainy weather during to rehydrate and spring back to life. Their name comes from the Greek word βmarsmosβ, which means drying out. Resilient!
Omphalotus illudens (jack-o'lantern mushroom) -- they're bright orange, looking like chanterelles (excep they are poisonous) UNTIL YOU TURN OUT THE LIGHTS and they glow GREEN.
Fungi can absorb & metabolize radiation β can this protect humans who are at risk of radiation poison, like astronautsπ§βπ?? YUP!
In an experiment, a thin layer of melanized fungus decreased radiation that would affect astronauts in space by 2%-5%! Mushroom space suits when??
Psychadelic mushrooms often turn blue when bruised, but none are as impressive as these blueing boletes! They look like pretty inconspicuous until they are cut, when their blue pigment shines through!
Phallus indusiatus (Veiled Lady) is so DAINTY. The skirt reminds me of a bird cage veil. It's edible, and used in Chinese medicine and haute cuisine. There are also similar species with the same kind of "skirt" in different colours!
They wonβt discriminate because you're disabled, that would be wrong π theyβll discriminate because they built their competency framework around an able-bodied neurotypical ideal and you donβt fit it, therefore youβre not qualified π« and thatβs just βfairβ π« π«
Itβs this balancing act between trying to convince them βI promise Iβm not too disabled to work here and I can do the same work as anyone else!β and βI swear Iβm actually disabled please give me this minor accommodation hereβs my personal medical info and life storyβ β
At GenCon, a flustered francophone came up to the booth & was tired and struggling so I said "would you rather speak french?" (in french) and they were like "oh! where are you from?" and iIsaid "Canada" and they said "then why is your accent german?" and I'll never recover
Even stranger: they realised this black fungi wasnβt just growing *despite* the radiation, but seemed to be growing *towards* it.
When they were able to get close enough, they found mould and yeast GROWING on the walls INSIDE the reactor.
THIS SHIT RIGHT HERE π
RAADS-R : Are you a sympathetic person?
Me: Like a sympathetic character? Do people sympathise with me? How would I know? Do you want to know if I sympathise with others? Who? When? In a "my sympathies" kind of way? Does it count for positive emotions?
WHATS MORE if these kind of fungi grow *toward* radiation, then we can use them to locate radioactive material! These bad ass fungi are absorbing the nasty radiation waves, but we still have radioactive particles in the soil. What if fungi could stop the radiation at the source?
And this is where I leave you with hope: we have mounting evidence that fungi can CLEAN UP nuclear fallout, and that they're ALREADY doing it.
There's a whole field called mycoremediation that studies how fungi can help remove toxins from the earth and theyre making big strides!
Donβt disclose, and you get overlooked for opportunities because youβre demanding or flawed for βno reasonβ. Disclose, and you get overlooked because they question your capability (ie βautistic ppl canβt lead teams bc of poor social skillsβ) β
Imagine how SURREAL it must have been for the researchers when they got access in the 90s, approached this desolate wasteland at this tragic site, and saw that the surrounding soil had turned BLACK from fungal growth!
FUNGUS IN SPACE!!! ππ
Equal parts cosmic horror and nature being metal, let's talk about the lichen that grew on the OUTSIDE of the International Space Station!
Get your tea and curl up, because I PROMISE you wanna hear about these fungal cosmonauts π§βπ
π§΅
In the case of Liquid Trees, the scientists were specifically designing for Belgrade, Serbia, where cramped urban areas and pollution (thanks, coal) makes it hard for trees to survive. In this way, the Liquid Trees could support the real trees! (7/14)
The Liquid Trees have other cool features: they have solar panels that allow them to serve as chargers for mobile devices and lights at night. They act as benches and wind shelter. These can be really important factors for homeless people. (8/14)
βAnd because the fungi grow in response to radiation, they could envelop microscopic particles, preventing the radioactivity from leaching into the ground. So potentially we could use these radio-adapted fungi ... to clean up nuclear contamination.β
HECK YEAH! π₯³πππΎ
Thereβs no such thing as a βtreeβ βΊοΈ
Theyβre just a bunch of tall, unrelated plants. Maples are more closely related to cabbage than to conifers.
So my convo with HR is at almost 3M views.
And, uh, that really sucks, but I wont take it down bc I think it's important and ppl are supporting each other in the replies, but if any of y'all wanna buy me mushroom books, that would be cool:
They also work in winter! Even when the trees have shed their leaves and go dormant, our little algae friends are hard at work. And let's talk about that algae because IT'S SO COOL! (9/14)
Other beings are thriving in the exclusion zone. Boars, birds, lynxes, wolves & mushrooms alike!
Despite this horrific disaster and the unfathomable amount of toxins, nature is adapting and recovering. Even the poisoned earth is not a cold dead thing π§‘
Please don't give me legal advice. I can't share the details of the situation, and I'm Canadian, and I already have legal counsel. I just want mushrooms, please.
On 26 April 1986, a reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded. It destroyed the containment building and caused a reactor core fire that lasted 8 days, spraying airborne radioactive contaminants throughout the USSR and Europe π¨
From the University of Saskatchewan:
βWe wanted to see whether we could train our fungi to recognize certain types of radioactive nuclides. This potentially would turn these fungi into cost-effective and highly sensitive biological detectors of nuclear fallout,β said Dadachova.
