Justify did something remarkable in winning six races in 111 days, five of them going two turns. This is something you likely won't ever see again. We can discuss where he fits from an historical perspective at another time. For now it's just congratulation on an amazing feat.
It's with a very heavy heart that I say that my friend Harvey Pack has died. He was a great, and positive, influence on my life, both personally and professionally. He brought a lot of joy to many racing fans as well. He was 94. He had a great life. May the horse be with him
As the meet comes to a close, I want to thank everyone for all their support and kindness. While there is a mistaken impression that all I do is take abuse, NOTHING could be further from the truth. While I will never give less than 100%, your support makes it a pleasure. Thanks!
So I tested positive for Covid ( I'm fully vaccinated ). I'm fine. I had some mild symptoms, and given the current situation, I felt I should get tested. Lousy timing to say the least. I expect to be back at work next week. In the meantime, there will be plenty of Tweeting:-)
Lost in the midst of the utter brilliance of Flightline, is how good Life is Good is, as under those utterly impossible circumstances, he hung in for a VERY long time. You can’t win, or even finish second, in these circumstances. Life is Good was more than good.
While I understand crazy things happen in meltdowns, this one is beyond inexplicable. Don’t give me Mine the Bird, as his pps were closer to Secretariat’s than this horse. This is as incredible a result as you may ever see.
I realize, and understand, that most are focused on the Derby right now, but the official announcement that
@TheNYRA
has gotten the approval to build a new Belmont Park is incredible news for the Industry as a whole and racing fans.
To those that have asked my thoughts on today’s news....my opinion has always been the same. I have no tolerance for anyone that cheats and/or hurts the game that we love. I also believe firmly in due process. I would like to think we can all agree on that.
Flightline really does justify the hype. To chase that insane pace and then draw away is something you just don’t see, especially at this level. Pretty remarkable.
Whether or not you liked, or bet, Arcangelo, it was a great race and result. Not only is
@jenaantonucci
the first woman to train a
@BelmontStakes
winner, she's the first woman to train a winner of any TC race. What a great, and well deserved, moment.
To suggest this wasn't a trying meet would be a misrepresentation. But, even under difficult circumstances, you proved to be as loyal and supportive as is imaginable. Your kind words of encouragement make this meet special. I thank all of you from the bottom of my heart.
My Dad died 11 years ago today ( 10/27/07 ). Not only did he take me to the track for the first time, but he also taught me never to say very unique. I'll bet a 4-6 double and exacta in every race at
#Belmont
( his birthday ) in his memory. It's the least I can do.
I’m in Saratoga for a couple of days. No matter how many years and times I have been here, and it’s many, it always amazes me how beautiful it is the first time I come up as we head towards Summer. Less than 60 days until Opening Day
I want to thank all the people that have been so kind and supportive during this Saratoga meet, and also beyond as well. It’s appreciated more than you can know.
End of the day....greatest game in the world. Crazy stuff happens. Aren't we kind of in it for that reason? Do you really want to absolutely be able to explain everything? I want to critically analyze everything...but sometimes you just have to throw up your hands.
I don't care if she runs last in the BC Distaff.....Letruska is a champion just waiting for her crown. What a year she has put in. Seven starts, six different tracks, and four Grade 1 wins.
As I’m walking the few short blocks to the track to begin this final week, it occurs to me that these streets that I walked, and mostly rode my bike, for so many years as a kid, also abut one of the world’s most wonderful places. Let’s enjoy closing week!
Record Saratoga handle of over $55.5 million, eclipsing the old mark by over $3.4 million. Thank you so much for all your support. There's no game without the bettors. Along with owners, you drive the game. Thanks again....and let's do it all over again tomorrow! Good night.
The idea that some people think this is bad for the game is preposterous. It is good for the game to demonstrate its integrity. Period. Also, quite frankly, controversy stirs up interest. Interest is good.
Thank you to all the horseplayers who support us throughout the year. It's been a long nearly eight month run at the Big A. The best of the year is yet to come, but we appreciate your support at all times. You deserve the best we have to offer. Thanks again.
No racing at
@TheNYRA
until New Year’s Eve. I hope everyone has a happy ( and safe ) holiday. Thanks, as always, for all the kind words. Without the horseplayers there would be no game and for that I thank you.
Due to the incredible generosity of the Racing community, spearheaded by Louis Lazzinarro of Nove and Kirk Wycoff of Three Diamonds, we raised over $100K for
@trfinc
@NYRTCA
@Oldfriendsfarm
and
@bcca
Great thanks to everyone that contributed to these great causes
I hope everyone has a good Thanksgiving. It’s been a rough year for so many, but there is still a lot to be thankful for in many of our lives. Be safe and I will see everyone on Saturday.
It's well documented that I have a lot of love for Two Phil's, and am very sorry that he's retired, but with all due respect, Secretariat didn't skip the Preakness and Belmont and wait for the Ohio Derby.
That concludes our regularly scheduled broadcasting....so thanks again...have a great year...though we hope we see you before then ( perhaps multiple times ). It was a pleasure invading your lives for the past eight weeks and we all look forward to doing it again in 2020
@TheNYRA
Today's handle was just under $51.4 million. What can I say besides thanks. Your support of our racing makes working for you a pleasure. The day delivered in a big way...but so did all of you. Thank you again
Just under $22 million in handle, with close to 28K in attendance, are Opening Day records. Thanks to the bettors, who fuel the game, for their support as always. Let's do it all over again tomorrow.
Tomorrow, Sunday, will be my last day at
@TheNYRA
in 2023. Heading to Jamaica to cover the Mouttet Mile with
@RajivMaragh
next Saturday from Caymanas Park for America's Day at the Races and then will be taking the rest of December off. Don't worry, though, I'll still be here:-)
I have to say, and it did not cost me money, in fact it saved me money, as I keyed the 1 on top in exactas but did not use the 4, but this is a REALLY lousy deal for bettors. I don't know what happened but, man, that was bad
Sometimes the smartest comments are the simplest ones, and 25 years ago a very wise man told me “Wayne Lukas made a lot of money sending speed horses to the lead.” Nobody has understood that better than Bob Baffert.
I understand he was 1:5 and overlaid the field, but I don’t think I have ever seen a horse win a Grade 1 more easily than Jackie’s Warrior just won the Vanderbilt.
@JRosarioJockey
never moved a muscle.
It should not be missed how incredibly well Echo Zulu ran in defeat. Fought a very strong pace and battled hard to the wire finishing a close fourth. Not sure how far she wants to go but that was a terrific effort.
When someone asks why Saratoga is great, it’s at least partly because when you’re walking home at midnight, you pass someone relatively random on the street, a couple blocks from your place, and they ask you “how do you think Varenka is going to do tomorrow?”
@GrahamMotion
Here's an idea....EVERYONE that works in horse racing be clear that there are TWO groups that keep this game going....owners and bettors. Both put up their money and keep this game alive. Without either one, but both the same, this ecosystem collapses.
With the benefit of a little sleep and a little hindsight, here's the bottom line as I see it....there are two stakeholders in this game, bettors and owners, and we have to do the best possible job of protecting both, and never one at the expense of another.
Arcangelo firmly established himself as the top 3YO in the country with a Travers win.
@jenaantonucci
has made every right move with him. Disarm made it close, but Arcangelo did all the running. Very impressive
Flightline gallops home in 1:21.37 in his expected Malibu triumph. That's 3.42 seconds faster than the La Brea. He is an absolute monster. Maybe better than advertised. Wow!
So
@luissaezpty
got 15 days? As someone who agrees with the DQ, I can't understand how he was blamed for what happened, much less given a more severe penalty than we usually see. Do the rules state fines are MORE severe in "big" races?
There is great satisfaction in seeing horses like Tiz the Law deliver big performances in races as important as the
@BelmontStakes
. Barclay Tagg did everything right, at all times, with this colt, and his loyalty to
@jockeyfranco
speaks volumes about him. Congratulations to all.
People can have whatever opinions they want, but the reality is that potentially having the best horse unable to run in the biggest race because of, essentially, pettiness ( arguably on both sides ) is not only unfortunate but a disservice to the game.
Swiss Skydiver has been simply spectacular this year and she clearly thrives on racing. Congrats to
@KennyMcPeek
for risking looking bad and ending up looking like a genius.
As always, Opening Day at Saratoga is a special day, but I would be lying if I said it won’t be the same without you there. I hope you can join us on Talking Horses at 11:40 and then Saratoga Live all day. We’ll do our very best to bring Saratoga to you as much as we can.
Also excited by Rich Strike's performance. I'm a big Hot Rod Charlie fan but how can you not like Rich Strike? A lot of people, myself including, felt he would be a one hit wonder, but he has proven to be MUCH more than that. It's always good to have a Derby winner be legit.
I want to wish everyone a Happy New Year and only good things going forward into 2019 and beyond.....and thanks for all your support during the year. It means a lot.
I want to thank everyone that reached out for your kind words. The heroes in this game, like so many situations, are the many people behind the scenes that give so much for our enjoyment ( and my case employment as well ). The
@NYRTCA
deserves all of our thanks and support.
102 Beyer for the first two finishers in the Apple Blossom....one of the best figures Monomoy Girl has ever run....and the best for the winner, Letruska. What a race!
I wish I could say something to make people feel better. I feel genuine empathy for those that would have won money had Modern Games not been "scratched." There are great highs and great lows in this game....somehow this one seems outside of those parameters.
Hard to imagine how pathetic someone has to be to rush to Twitter to mock someone for making a bad pick. Many picks suck. That's what happens when you play the horses.
Finally, before I head off Twitter for the night, I just want to say thanks to everyone for their good wishes. It really does mean a lot....now let's move on and pick some winners and complain about some imagined bad rides....and all the rest. Goodnight
Joel Rosario had no trouble getting to the rail early, and staying there as long as possible, with Sir Winston. Tacitus? Widest of all. The best ride won. The best horse was 2nd. Congrats to Joel, as this was one of those rare races where the jockey was ABSOLUTELY the difference.
As we enter Day 20 of the meet, the halfway point, it's fair to say this has been a trying meet so far. With Saratoga being so important to so many of us, it's understandable that emotions are running high. Please don't think that is not appreciated. It's good to care.
Through the first 20 days, aka half of the meet, at Saratoga
@TheNYRA
, average daily handle is over $20 million....so let me say it again....THANK YOU to all the bettors that support our racing. We can't do it without you.
So today is the last day of the
@nytimes
Sports Section. I remember over 40 years ago when my Dad excitedly told me they hired an excellent new Racing writer. That same writer, Steve Crist, was the first person to hire me to handicap on TV.
How can you not love Cody's Wish, who's perhaps the favorite now for Horse of the Year after that race? Didn't break again, and while he did get a solid pace, he made a significant middle move into a quick third quarter. Not a memorable field/race, but he's sure a memorable horse
So, I assume Medina Spirit was never coming to the PA Derby. You knew what the field was going to be before they drew, drawing outside any other speed is likely a good thing, yet the post is being blamed? Funny
For those that keep asking me about track conditions, I am sitting having breakfast with my Mom. She also has no idea what the track conditions are….and if she did, she would have Tweeted them out, just as I would have
Why bother having rules if they don’t apply in the biggest races? They should apply even MORE, not less. I can’t understand how anyone can argue with that
For the people that wonder why I removed responses to my opinion on the Jim Dandy, refer to the person that called me a scumbag for apparently having a different opinion than him. Why isn't he the object of your derision.
Despite losing one day this meet, we set an all-time handle record today with one day left. That’s worthy of a big thanks to everyone for supporting us at
@TheNYRA
. It’s a pleasure to be able to work for such great fans.
So people actually don't understand that Maximum Security was taken down for fouling other horses besides Country House? Really? You can't complain about something if you don't understand even the most basic rules. Sorry.
Aggressive riding is one thing but constantly riding the edge, and sometimes crossing it, is another. Upon reflection, and further viewing, I think there should have been a DQ in the Remsen.
@iradortiz
is a great rider but he needs to reflect on his tactics going forward
Tiz the Law was simply too good for them today. What a nice horse. A flawless ride by
@jockeyfranco
as well. Glad to see him getting the chance he deserves on the biggest stage.
Saturday's card at Belmont is one the best cards so far this year. Almost ten horses in the body of the races, big fields for the two turf Stakes and few, if any, super short priced favorites. Should be a great way to close out the meet
@TheNYRA
I just love the nonsensical narrative that because Maximum Security won yesterday and/or is the deserving 3YO champ, it somehow shows the Stewards made the wrong call in the Derby. Because I enjoyed my burger today I shouldn’t have returned my undercooked fish last May.
