As episode 200 approaches, I have a big announcement.
@WestlandBooks
are going to publish a four-volume anthology of The Seen and the Unseen early next year.
I'll be curating meaty excerpts from the show across these themes.
So excited to work with
@karthikavk
&
@ajithags
! ๐
This is one of greatest videos of all time. Just watch till the end!
And then watch it again, and again, and again, like I did. Masterful.

Remarkable self-control by
@imVkohli
.
In a sense, it's a classic Twitter moment. Person with zero knowledge & zero self-awareness tries to give random gyan to actual practitioner.
'Maine aapko jawaab de diya hai.'
This video is a perfect illustration of how our netas feel they owe us no explanation. They are our masters. We are mere pesky subjects.
My father died an hour ago.
He was admitted to hospital two weeks ago, all systems failing, couldn't recognise us. Picked up Covid while there, because hey, he always tried everything at a buffet. Can't even say what finally took him.
I guess he died of life, like we all will.
When it comes to Bollywood or cricket celebs doing what they're doing, I wonder, is it the carrot or is it the stick?
They're rich enough to not be bribed, so it must be fear of some kind. What kind?
I hope some insider reveals the full story one day.
I'm mildly confused about one thing. Why are some people who say there is no such thing as Brahminical patriarchy upset with those who want to smash it?
If it doesn't exist, let them smash it, no. What goes of your daddy?
At the moment, Narendra Modi's understanding of federalism appears to be this:
The centre focuses on narrative.
The states have to do the actual governance.
This is the time for opposition leaders to be on the streets with the students.
Stand up for the principles you pay lip service to.
Don't sit back doing cost-benefit analysis. Cleverly worded tweets won't cut it. Walk the talk.
Free & fair elections don't just mean that voting is free & fair.
It also means that the opposition is free to raise funds, to campaign, to speak up.
You can rig an election without rigging the voting.
There is more to democracy than elections, & more to elections than voting.
Language matters.
One of my writing students, Rita Mishra, just shared this note on passive voice with the group.
There are so many contexts in which this holds true. Example: 'The Babri Masjid was demolished.'
It's sickening how TV anchors are justifying their tasteless speculation of Sridevi's death by saying it's in the 'public interest'.
There is a difference between the public interest and what the public is interested in.
So glad
@imVkohli
spoke out.
And I don't think he did it 'late'. People who achieve excellence ignore social media for a reason. They won't know in real time what poison is being brewed here.
So well done, Virat!
This is a stunning description of what China did about Covid-19 -- and what we probably don't have state capacity to do.
The part about Italy at the end could be true of us soon.
There is not one day in the past three months that I have not either received condolences or given them.
There are phone numbers on my phone that it breaks my heart to look at -- because no one will pick up if I call.
And this is what our prime minister has to say?
This is such a tragedy.
If anyone tells you that things in India are just fine, that critics are overstating things, point them to this.
One of our finest comedians forced into silence.
Along with the grief, there is anger.
I hope we can stop grieving one day. And I hope we never lose this anger.
Those who allowed this to happen, who made it *worse*, must be held accountable.
What's happening in Kerala is heartbreaking. I wish I could do more. So here's my offer for you:
If you donate 5k to the CM's relief fund, I'll write a limerick on a subject of your choice.
Send me receipt & subject. I will post limerick on this thread.
As i get into the cab to the airport, it starts raining. I am surprised and remark rhetorically, "Yeh baarish kahaan se aa gayi?"
The cabbie turns, takes a good long look at me, and says, "School nahin gaye kaa?"
This is a good day to listen to Abby Philips aka

on this old episode:
He fights for reason & against quackery against great odds.
His account has been blocked today by Twitter after a case filed by one of the giants he was taking on.
The Republic employees who left don't deserve our admiration, but they do deserve our sympathy.
Every human being is a work in progress.
That last thing they did was the right thing to do.
The mockery is misplaced.
Dramatic increase in demand for bulldozers. Are we increasing domestic capacity for manufacturing or will we have to depend on imports??

This is an incredible thread.
I'm waiting to see which political parties speak up against those calling for the genocide of Indian Muslims.
Some of them will try to ride the tiger. But no one can ride it now, not even the BJP.
Remember those who are silent now.

Happy Republic Day.

I'm here by an accident of birth, but I love this country, & to love something is to want to know it better. Doing The Seen and the Unseen over these 4 years has taught me *so much* about India.
Here are a few eps I learnt from. 1/n
Narendra Modi is cut of the same cloth as Indira Gandhi -- but he's smarter.
He's figured that you don't need to declare an emergency & arrest everyone. Arrest some, harrass others, let the chilling effect kick in.
Soon, people will be wary of speaking out. Death of Dissent.
Delhi Police names CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury, Swaraj Abhiyan leader Yogendra Yadav, economist Jayati Ghosh, DU professor and activist Apoorvanand, and documentary filmmaker Rahul Roy in supplementary charge sheet as co-conspirators in Delhi riots case
These are some of the recent books published by Westland that have been sharing a shelf at home.
They've been shut down today.
They've published some of the best & bravest non-fiction of our times. Is that why?
We must reject the BJP dream of a Tukde-Tukde India.
My column today in the Times of India about the two Ideas of India, and who the real anti-nationals are:
First I thought, "Doesn't this guy get the concepts of Comparative Advantage snd Opportunity Cost? He should pay someone to clean his garden so he can do something else instead."
Then I thought, "Nah, it's best for us if he does this only."

We also qualified for the Nations Cup (aka the World Championship) to be held in Europe this November.

I've been critical of Rahul Gandhi in the past, but I am so impressed with what he is doing now. Boots on the grounds, doing the hard yards, walking the talk -- all those cliches.
He was always a decent human being. Can he *finally* turn himself into an effective politician?
People who discover The Seen and the Unseen often wonder which episodes to check out first. Some thoughts in this thread.
First, at a basic level, here are the 25 most-downloaded episodes of the show.
Aย group of 57 leading scientists, doctors&policy experts has released a report calling in to question the safety and efficacy of the current COVID-19 vaccines and are now calling for an immediate end to all vaccine programs. Read& share this damning report
1. This is a particularly idiotic thing to say because in a democracy, we will obviously protest the wrongdoings of our own state. We are not stakeholders in Pakistan. Like, duh!
2. Whataboutery is always an admission of defeat.

The healthy young have hardly any chance of serious effects or dying due to covid. They have a higher chance of dying due to vaccines. The covid recovered have much better natural immunity, than the vaccine gives them. Vaccines may even compromise their acquired natural immunity.

I have a hypothetical question for those who support the ruling dispensation.
Is there *anything* that would make you change your mind? Anything at all? This is a thought experiment.
What about the torture of children.

My father, Suhas Gokhale, was arrested by Modi govt on the eve of his retirement. He had finished his work on the last day of his 30-year-service and was looking forward to his retirement parade the next day (1/18)
We are ruled by cheap thugs.
They will use their power to help friends, crush enemies & stalk women they lust for, as Modi-Shah showed in Gujarat.
Don't ascribe greater sophistication. These are thugs run amok, using the power of a state that should not have been this powerful.

Such a stimulating conversation!
This is why Test cricket is so special: such contrasting players as Pujara & Pant can be so indispensable in such an improbable win.
And if you told me before the series that Siraj & Sundar & Shardul will play pivotal roles! ๐ค
If the people who abused Shami were from Pakistan, & Kohli spoke out against those who abused Shami, then why is the bhakt ecosystem so upset?
Bhakts should be applauding Kohli & saying, 'Yes! We also believe no one should be targeted on the basis of religion!'
No? ๐
The so-called mass abuse of Shami in religious grounds amounted to 8 posts on his Instagram. The rest was all amplification. The source of the initial posts is from across the border.
