I took a little break from writing about politics to write a deeply personal piece about love.
Messy, hurtful, at times, inexplicable but love all the same.
I hope it resonates, even a little
An overwhelming sentiment I’m hearing today: It should never have been this close. And the Democratic Party needs to get it together.
This is from lots of Democrats.
For the last two days, my 4-year-old had been asking me to take him to a store so he could buy a card “with hearts on it.” Tonight, he gave up on me and made me this.
Lara Trump issues a statement via the Trump campaign and the last line reads like no other statement in the history of statements:
“ I hope it’s all worth it for you, Omarosa, because some things you just can’t put a price on.”
We’ve been cooped up at home all day and a little while ago, there was a knock at the door. It was our mailman Carl, who knew that my 5-year-old celebrated a birthday last week (and loves trucks.)
So he brought him this.
It made his day. And mine.
The little things.
I know four people now who have Coronavirus, including my sister, and while it’s been different for all of them, one thing is similar: it’s a nasty illness and once you think you’re past the thick of it, it rears it’s ugly head again.
Stay home. Take care of yourselves.
About a year ago my dad was diagnosed w/ bladder cancer. Today after 2 surgeries/treatment we found out he’s in the clear.
Every single day nearly everything I read on here seems so trivial in comparison. It’s a cruel world out there. We’re all battling something. Be kind.
What can I say about the past few weeks, after being laid off from The Messenger…
I wrote about it here, and talked about how our owner Jimmy Finkelstein betrayed not only me, but all of us.
To follow, lots of people saying The presidential race shouldn’t have been close, we *should* have won the senate, we *should* have won more house seats.
Just yesterday people were talking about a big blue wave.
As I mentioned earlier, my aunt is sewing masks for healthcare workers at hospitals. And she’s in need of more 1/8” elastic if anyone has some/knows where to get it. Let me know. Thanks!
Every single time I hear states talking about reopening in the next few days, I feel like making their lawmakers see what we’ve experienced in the NY and NJ area in the last month.
Just for a day. Maybe then they’d get it.
In case you missed my piece for
@VanityFair
on Friday, I detail how Jimmy Finkelstein lured me to The Messenger and then abandoned not only me but close to 300 of my insanely talented colleagues.
It’s here:
Some days (most days) single mama-hood is tough, especially during a pandemic.
But there are other days when your little guy asks for a pencil and then disappears. He returns some time later to show you he’s doing his work.
A little news this morning! I’m going home to The Hill, where I was a reporter for almost a dozen years, where my editors (looking at you
@BobCusack
and
@iswanTheHill
) are my close friends and the staff is my fam.
So thrilled to be back!
This is the conundrum for 2020...You can run far to the left and win the primary but it'll be tough to win the general.
Sources tell me all the time that Biden, for example, would be a good candidate for the general but wouldn't make it out of a primary.
Trump/GOP not dealing with reality yet in House. Big sea change. Dems now mobilized for 2020. Just wait til they can vote against Trump. But Dems may have to do some soul searching over how far left they go. Trump country filled with Dems who could switch back. I know. I met them
@ratemyskyperoom
Thank you all for the concern. My beloved corn plant, which has been with me all of my adult life, is actually making a comeback after 6 months of pandemic abandonment. Please see the top for evidence of growth and love. And thank you again for your thoughts and prayers!
Lyft driver: (Singing Fight Song) Did you know this was Hillary Clinton’s campaign song?
Me: Yes, I did.
Driver: I spend so much time thinking about that campaign...So what do you do?

There were 177,000 new virus cases in the U.S. yesterday -- the second-highest daily total ever, trailing only a record set a mere five days earlier.
And *this* is the location the Trump campaign chose for its Giuliani presser. There are now about 50 people in this small room.
As someone who is down for the count because I’m recovering from really painful skin cancer surgery last week, I’ll say this: make fun of Zuckerberg for anything else but sunscreen.
I wish someone would have told younger me to appreciate pale skin, & apply sunscreen. A lot of it
Actually a
@CNN
reporter disrespected
@POTUS
& PM May during their press conf. Instead of rewarding bad behavior, we decided to reprioritize the TV appearances for administration officials.
First day back
@thehill
!
My kiddo before drop off: “Everything will be good mommy. Trust me. And please tell Bob and Ian I say hello.” (
@BobCusack
and
@iswanTheHill
)
I’ll be covering the presidential campaign with a side of national politics so add me to your press lists as…
One of my New Year’s resolutions this year was to publish this essay. ☑️
I was feeling really alone at the time & I was drowning in grief. I hoped that by putting this out there, it would help others & I’d feel some catharsis & comfort.

In case you were immersed in the Mueller report this weekend, or enjoyed a weekend away from Twitter (lucky you!), this poll came out and showed
@PeteButtigieg
(Yes, that guy) surging to 3rd place in this Iowa poll.
As a Democrat told me this morning, the investigation was the best thing that happened to Republicans because it gives Collins, Murkowski and Flake cover to say “there was an investigation.” This Dem said bluntly: “We were rolled.”
New Castle police confirming that the local fire department is on scene of a fire on Old House Lane in Chappaqua, where Hillary and Bill Clinton live, but the fire is not at their main residence...could be the next door property they bought last year or another structure
Text from a friend: Know who looks bad here? Pollsters for getting it so wrong, journalists for believing them again, the Dem party for basically promising something that didn’t happen. And the president for being the president. So basically everyone.
Biden on turnout today: “What I'm hearing is that there's overwhelming turnout. And overwhelming turnout particularly of young people, of women, and an overwhelming turnout of african american voters over the age of 65 in places like Georgia and Florida.”
Something to watch: Two potential 2020 candidates
@KamalaHarris
and
@CoryBooker
will get some time in the spotlight during Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation hearing on Judiciary Committee.
Scooplet: DNC is launching a billboard campaign today in six swing states praising Biden for passing infrastructure…while ribbing Trump for “infrastructure week.”
Decided my five-year-old would do virtual school (we were given the option.)
It was the most agonizing decision I made all year. I honestly went back and forth for months.
Now...a kid in his class has Covid.
And I’m feeling so much better about my decision!
Last night I asked folks for help in assisting my aunt in her effort to make masks for hospital workers.
So many offered suggestions and help. And people like
@mquintos
, whose factory is helping to make thousands of masks, are the superheroes’ superheroes. 🙏🏻
Feeling better and better about my decision to do remote learning in the fall, as agonizing as it was.
Lots of people think this is all behind us, especially in states with declining numbers.
And clearly that couldn’t be farther from the truth.
Maybe I'm too immersed in the political world, or too old, or watch too many episodes of Mr. Rogers with my toddler but I'm pretty proud of the fact that I don't know who "Jordyn" is.
Huge Obama takeaway here:
They are counting on your cynicism. They know they can’t win you over with their policies. So they’re hoping to make it as hard as possible for you to vote, and to convince you that your vote doesn’t matter. That’s how they win.
Anarchists, Agitators or Protestors who vandalize or damage our Federal Courthouse in Portland, or any Federal Buildings in any of our Cities or States, will be prosecuted under our recently re-enacted Statues & Monuments Act. MINIMUM TEN YEARS IN PRISON. Don’t do it!
