The trailer for the show I art directed on, Carol & the End of the World, is here - can't wait for y'all to finally see our girl in motion!! 🤩 Hope you love Carol and her world as much as I do when the show comes out 12/15 - seriously, this one's going to be special!! 🥰
A mysterious planet is hurtling towards Earth, the end of the world is imminent. While everyone is off to pursue their wildest dreams -- one quiet and always uncomfortable woman stands alone.
Carol & The End of the World starring Martha Kelly premieres December 15.
PSA: if you want to break into in character design, please at the very least have character turnarounds and expressions in your portfolio. 🙏 They're a huge part of the job and you need to actually show recruiters you can do them - they're not just going to take your word for it.
artists: it takes zero (0) effort to NOT put self-deprecating/unprofessional things in your bio (stuff like "just trying not to suck," "I never draw," etc.)
you can just say you're an artist and leave it at that - you don't NEED to qualify it by putting yourself down 😭
no hate at all to this creator, but having gone to an art school with a toxic culture myself, can we stop normalizing abuse as
#justartschoolthings
? you're literally paying tens of thousands of dollars to learn complacency with workplace exploitation - it's not quirky or cute
Big news! 📢 Yesterday was my first day at Netflix Animation!! 🎉 This new opportunity is both exciting and overwhelming, so I'll be taking a few weeks off of posting art so to settle in! Thank you for your support and patience, and check out the next post for a process vid! 🙏💖
The major film studios are worried that if they can’t decide to pay their actors fairly within the next 7-10 days, the 2023-2024 television season will be scrapped and more films will be delayed.

when it comes to applying for jobs in animation, portfolios are more than just a showcase of SKILL - just as importantly, they're also a showcase of INTENT and UNDERSTANDING of the role.
let me explain 🧵
>"sorry, I haven't posted art in a few weeks"
gurl, artists used to spend YEARS on a piece - you're fine
don't let the infinite growth mindset of capitalism convince you you're behind because you're prioritizing yourself over shareholder value or whatever
literally one of my go-to processes when the client asks "can you make this image feel like that image?"
disclaimer: it's not a magic bullet solution and the last bit takes some creativity/strategy, but it's great for quick concepts, speedpaints, colour keys, iterations, etc.
I keep hearing we're in an "indie animation renaissance," but a renaissance for who exactly? all I see is a handful of folks making their dream projects by underpaying people desperate for any work at this point. how can it be a renaissance if your workers can't afford rent/food?
@historyinmemes
Disney artists studying the nuances of a deer's movement for the movie Bambi in 1942.
This level of effort and dedication to a craft is unthinkable these days
yea because the animation is outsourced
paying your workers less = lower cost = higher profits
we had this same conversation when Spiderverse & Elemental came out - when're we gonna stop acting like lower wages are somehow a win? all this does is speed up the race-to-the-bottom
quick demo about reflections:
only values lighter than that of a reflective surface reflect onto it
(where value = how light/dark something is, regardless of its hue)
someone please make a reality TV show where boomers apply to jobs with the wildly outdated advice they unsolicitedly give millenials/Gen Z I am begging
I see a lot of (particularly younger) folks lamenting "what's the point of even trying to get an art-related jobs when there're teenagers that're already much better at drawing than me?"
let me be the first to tell you: there's waaay more to getting a job than technical skill 🧵
dude, some of the career advice they give at these art colleges is the wildest, most out-of-touch nonsense I've ever heard, and they're asking students to pay tens of thousands of dollars for this?? wtf 💀
applicants: pleeeeaase stop putting "experience bars" next to your professional skills! 😫 either include skills you're comfortable doing professionally or don't list them - I really don't know what ⬛️⬛️⬛️⬜️⬜️ means as far as your ability to perform a job goes
beautiful movies like Spiderverse CAN be made ethically & sustainably. the only thing stopping studios from hiring more workers, setting more reasonable schedules, paying workers more fairly is the insatiable desire for higher profits.
low wages/poor treatment = higher profits
the reason Americans aren't used to seeing this kinda stuff is because during the Vietnam War our leaders realized broadcasting images of our country doing violent imperialism made people mad actually, so they stopped showing it to us so that they could continue to do it
putting another thing in perspective: if you are disturbed by the violent imagery on the news, this is how arab news agencies have reported news for decades, i remember growing up and watching the news and because we know we wont be believed the atrocities are documented
Huge news: the project I spent most of the last few years on got announced - get ready for Carol & the End of the World! I can't overstate how special this show is to me: not only is it beautiful, thoughtful, & introspective, but it was also my first time leading & art directing!
hey artists, why so many of y'all so self-deprecating? who told you you couldn't just be happy with your work when you post it?? 🤔☹️ how you treat yourself tells others how to treat you - if you constantly lead with how much you suck, people are just gonna take your word for it
On live-action content: "Girls often graduate out of animation. Some of our most incredible competitors have been at the live-action game for a long time. We know that’s what girls want." Expect single-cam and multi-cam comedies and dramas.
friends with ADHD: do you struggle with wanting someone to provide structure externally (i.e. a parent, teacher, authority figure, etc.), but also finding yourself eventually resenting them (feeling controlled, etc.) - if so, what helps you resolve those conflicting feelings?
How are more people not talking about this? 🤯

seeing a lot of buzz about Netflix trainee program rejections on the timeline today, so just a reminder:
rejection doesn't always mean "you're not good enough," "you didn't deserve the job," "you need to improve," "you're a bad artist," etc.

to an old favourite that gets featured a lot of those 9-tile meme things of mine but I haven't shared on its own since I first painted it! 😊 Check out the next most for the layer-breakdown! 👇
is it rly a "character design" portfolio if it's all just 3/4-view drawings of nearly identical pretty girls, tho? 🤔
not saying people can't draw pretty girls or that they can't be part of a good portfolio, but character design is more than just drawing pretty girls lol
I was approached to do both BG design & paint freelance at a major union TV studio - I was very new & didn't know these were usually separate jobs. they offered a flat rate for, like, 10 BGs, which even at the time I knew was low, but I said "yes" for the experience. (1/12)
hey, can we stop perpetuating the idea that some animation jobs (like prop/BG design) are "easier to get/more entry-level" than others (like character design/vis-dev)? not only is this take grossly over-simplified & completely lacking nuance, but it's also, like... rly shitty 💩
thinking about my OCs: extremely thorough, detailed, specific 🤔✍️💡
talking about my OCs to others: LoL dOn'T tHiNk ToO mUcH aBoUt iT - tHeRe'S nO StOrY, iT's JuSt ✨ViBeS✨ LmAo 🤪🤪🤪
First of the tree/foliage-focused work I promised a few weeks ago! 🌳 Breaking the ice with some nice, comfort zone material - reflections, flat/graphic views of buildings... y'know, the usual, ha ha! 😂🌸🏡
>"animation is so profitable and successful! why is it so consistently underpaid?"
guys, it's profitable BECAUSE it's underpaid
low wages = corporate profits
It’s rare for cartoon to show a story about an older woman , so Carol & the end of the world actually peaks my interest
Also rip my iPad cuz she doesn’t like procreate dreams at all and she is laaggging

reminder that the patent for insulin was sold for only $1 because (in the original patent-holder's own words) "insulin does not belong to me, it belongs to the world"
but sure let's give eli lilly asspats for profiteering slightly less off of people who need life-saving medicine
so which stage of capitalism are we in when there's apparently more profit to be made in producing whole shows and never releasing them than there is in actually releasing them?
Anyone else using this time to get a little bit of cleaning done? 🧹🧼🧽 This kitty is keeping busy by making sure nobody slips on the steps up to the shrine - I wonder what tune she's humming? 🤔🎵🎶
What do I put in my art portfolio to get a job in the animation industry?
1. find multiple job postings for the title (different studios/projects ok)
2. make a list of the objective, required skills
3. the more often a skill is mentioned, the more important it is to show
(1/3)
recently I've been thinking a lot about this one time a studio I worked at held a meeting to brainstorm how to make a lead teenage girl character less "generic" - I suggested making her heavier since as a chubby kid in the 2000s, I never saw a characters that looked like me (1/2)
something to consider: if AI is "inevitable" & designed to "help us be more productive," who exactly benefits from that added productivity? if AI helps me produce 20 extra hrs of work per wk, do I get paid for those 20 hrs, or does my employer just pocket that surplus profit?
Paramount CEO Brian Robbins says the company is moving away from releasing original animated movies in theaters in favor of IPs.
“We’re not going to release an expensive original animated movie and just pray people will come.”
(Source: )
I see a lot of people on the timeline speculating if some/all of this image is AI-generated. just goes to show how quickly trust is lost & how slow it is to regain. it almost doesn't matter whether it's AI or not. the damage is already done - you already lost the consumers' trust
Aspiring animators im begging u to not exclusively aim for big shot LA studios
Its so wild to hear "Im not getting any work offers, Ive applied to CN, Nick and heard nothing!" ur allowed ur goals but pls allow urself to learn n grow from the so many other studios that exist in LA
Can you ever go wrong with a nice sunset palette? My favourite part of this was the street & bus - wish it took up more of the painting! Photo ref from

Interrupting your regularly scheduled Carol art for Carol FANart! 🚨 I've been itching to share this for awhile, and now I finally can! 🥰 I just thought Carol looked so adorable in her little office outfit that I wanted to draw her super cute and pastel-core! 💝
being indie isn't an excuse to underpay/abuse people
if you don't have the money to compensate people fairly, find it or do the work yourself. your time, ideas, etc. are not any more valuable than anyone else's
the simultaneously most empowering yet daunting thing about learning art is no class, teacher, book, tutorial, etc. can ever completely substitute just sitting down and trying do draw something

to a Double-Double from my ongoing series of In 'N' Out vis-dev! 🍔🌴 Also, I'll be taking an apartment-hunting hiatus for a bit! The rental market in LA is rough, so wish me luck & thank you for your patience!! 🙏💕
it's wild to me that within our lifetime an unexpected lay off has gone from something that would drive people to have a midlife crisis, ruin their marriage, commit suicide, etc. to just, like, something that happens every few years. it's fucked how mundane this trauma has become
if u ever feel insecure abt ur level of "success" post-grad cmpared 2 ur peers, I highly encourage u 2 dig into their family's socioeconomic status - not wat they say they r, but wat they actually r, bc one of the best predictors of wealth is whether or not u already come from it
genuine question: literally who is renting these luxury apartments - the ones that're like $4k~$6k/mo and apparently come with pools and fitness centers and walk-in closets and rooftop lounges? who has that much money and chooses to spend it on an apartment instead of a house??
when recruiters, ADs, etc. say "show process" in your design portfolio, they usually don't mean "process" in the "process video" sense (chronological steps of a single image: sketch, flats, render, etc.), but rather... (cont'd)

Big news: this week I started a new job as Background Paint Lead at Netflix!! 🥳 Super stoked to grow into this new role! That being said, I'll be taking a short hiatus to acclimate to my new schedule, so catch you all in a few weeks and thanks as always for your support! 💖🙏
and without missing a beat, one of my coworkers turns around and starts mansplaining what teenage girls look like to me, insisting "they're all skinny and lanky like that" and he would know because he has a teenage daughter

art college students: worried about finding work after graduation or how long it'll take you? 🤔😰💦 you can start the process by applying, networking, communicating your availability, etc. RIGHT NOW - you don't have to wait until graduation! 😉💡❗
if NFTs are in fact a valid way for artists to get the income they need/deserve, why're most of the people I see advocating for it already relatively established/financially stable & most of the people I see denouncing it actually under-privileged/marginalized/impoverished...? 🤔
studios will be like: "the execs need a few months to decide if the main character will be a girl or a boy, but once they've decided that, you can do the ideations, turnaround, expressions, and action poses in a few days, right?"
the devaluing of the actual labour is so real 😮💨
This week my show at Netflix was cancelled, which means I'm available for new opportunities in art direction, design leadership, visual development, BG paint/design, & prop/character design for TV & feature. My past clients include Disney, Nick, & more
💼
YESSS THIS! 🙌 like many, I struggled early on getting my foot in the door (something I now understand is more of a process than a light-switch moment) & felt very frustrated. one day, I ran into someone with more experience completely serendipitously in line at a cafe (1/6)
For those struggling within the animation industry right now, a good place to look for work while waiting out this difficult period is to look for work in advertisements. They're always looking for animators & motion graphic designers, just speaking from personal experience.
portfolio tip: sort ur work into separate pages based on job title, not project name (esp if its a personal project). project names make great headers/flavor text w/in a page but dont describe the kind of work, which makes it hard to quickly find relevant samples for the position
proposing going indie as the solution to what's going on in animation right now has the same energy as telling working class people to just start a small business
the fact that increasingly Americans see people choosing to wear masks (not even asking others to) as paranoid and worthy of derision, but many think guns are a necessity and a reasonable thing to just carry around is... interesting
not a tinfoil hat theory - literally just Google "reserve army of labour." increasing unemployment creates desperation which creates complacency with worse conditions/wages - this is a textbook ruling class move to subvert gains made by the working class
My tinfoil hat theory is that studios are starving out animation so people are desperate before strikes can even begin in June. I could be wrong, but considering what they said about starving sag/wga out of their homes it wouldn’t surprise me.
like, genuinely how do we see this degrading workaholism turning into a job that pays enough to pay off ur loans? how do u negotiate competitive pay when all u've been taught is to be content w/table scraps for 4+ years? do u think employers will just pay u more bc u worked hard?

an animation industry classic 👌✨
what if we started a thread and signal-boosted trans artists to show the studios all the amazing talent out there ready to hire that ISN'T bigoted?? 👀👇
or maybe instead of asking "why is my art underperforming?" or "how do I make my art more appealing to perform better?," ask how social media performance actually materially affects you and why you care?
If your art consistently underperforms on socials, you need to come to terms with the fact that it just might not be as appealing as you think it is, instead of blaming external factors.
This is a lesson I've had to learn many times, and continue to have to learn. (🧵)
not tryna sound like a boomer, but is it just me or are students these days RLY fixated (often paralyzingly so) on doing things like learning art the "best"/"right" way? like, they'll spend so much time tryna find the "best" resource & then have no time to actually use it...
LRTs: if ur going to college for structure, make sure u have a gameplan for when that structure disappears in 4 yrs. structure is a very valid reason to go to college, but Ive seen a lot of ppl do well in college only to drop off the map when they dont get a job right after 🙁
"personally offended?" the ruling class loves trotting out civility politics like this whenever the working class challenges or even questions its power - "we need to be civil," "progress takes time," etc.
people don't care about civility when they can't buy food, pay rent, etc.
Disney CEO Bob Iger is reportedly 'personally offended' the WGA didn't agree to their latest offer
Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos is reportedly worried that agreeing to the deal will set a precedent for writers and actors in other territories to ask for fair deals
