JB Pritzker spox on Paul Vallas' past comments on conservative talk radio during the pandemic: “residents deserve to know if their next Mayor will listen to experts or instead to right wing talk show hosts when making decisions about people’s lives.”

The Chicago Advisory Redistricting Commission has unveiled the first draft of their independent map for the Chicago City Council. Far fewer squiggles, and Englewood appears to have been kept more intact than the current map. What do y'all think? (Will share link when I have it).

The DNC reaction from Atlanta. Yes, we have union hotels, lots of rooms, and United Center is plug and play, but: "Perhaps most of all... national party leaders were wowed" by Gov. Pritzker's pledge "to help bankroll" the $80M+ event:
I've been asking incumbent aldermen how they feel about their chances in the upcoming election.

(who faces two challengers): "Is this on the record?"
Me: "Yeah."
Sue: "I'm gonna whip their ass."
This morning, CTU Prez Jesse Sharkey said 3 things needed for a deal: remote instruction, widespread testing, and metric for schools to flip remote. Holdup is the mayor, who is "being relentlessly stupid... relentlessly stubborn... relentlessly refusing to seek accommodations."
The past few days have been rough. Don’t get me wrong: I am exceedingly proud to stand next to my Tribune colleagues, whose talent, grit, and love for this city convinced me to work at the paper knowing full well who our owners were. Today’s strike was necessary.
Since the Chicago-based fast-food giant shuttered its nearly 850 stores in Russia last week amid the war in Ukraine, fears have circulated that Russian parties might try to infringe on McDonald’s trademark.
It's happening.

Been updating this story, now with comments from Alds Lee and Cardona about threats from Rosa to use his leadership of zoning committee to stall legislation in their wards. Alds said it was "scary" and an "abuse of power." Rosa apologized. W/

"A May survey of 1,000 U.S. adults (Morning Consult for Bloomberg News) showed that 39% would consider quitting if their employers weren’t flexible about remote work. The generational difference is clear: Among millennials and Gen Z, that figure was 49%."

I would love to tell you where some of Chicago’s big developments have ended up in the proposed Rules committee map but I can barely read the names of the burbs, let alone any street names.

Wow. Illinois got a ratings upgrade from Moody's. Keep in mind we're now at Baa2, which is two notches above junk. But it's good news that the state hasn't seen since June of 1998 (when "The Boy is Mine" topped pop charts).
Pres. Carter was not made available for questions, and an agency spox also intervened when Block Club tried to talk to CTA board members about whether *they* were holding the agency accountable. Spox said "board members were not available to talk because of scheduling conflicts."
CTA Boss Dorval Carter's salary has soared 60% — and counting — while the leader has had no reviews, rarely rode transit nor been criticized by his oversight board.

A good thing to do if you talk to a resident of the City of Chicago – just go ahead and ask if they're running for mayor so we can start crossing names off the list.

I haven’t seen this in my four short years covering City Hal - the mayor sitting in on a committee hearing, let alone a subject matter hearing with no vote expected.

A thing I did not know: “According to Tom McGlade, a senior vice president of marketing at Vienna Beef, there are more hot-dog stands in the Chicago area serving (Vienna dogs) than there are Wendy’s, Burger King and McDonald’s locations combined.”
I went to Chicago for a couple days and ate as many hot dogs as I could. My goal wasn’t to find the “best” Chicago dog or to come up with some top 10 list; it was to paint a picture of the city through its people. My latest for

Eileen O'Neill Burke's lead is now 2,015 votes against Clayton Harris III. We're awaiting tabulation of about 4,500 total ballots (D and R, Chi + Cook) tomorrow. This also includes a brief explainer (from both camps + BOE) about Saturday's VBM snafu.
LATEST: Clayton Harris III snagged up 62% of the 11,626 Democratic ballots for Cook County state's attorney that were counted today by the Chicago Board of Elections. That shrinks Eileen O'Neill Burke's lead to just over 2,000 votes.

BREAKING: City of Chicago is suspending booting, late fees and defaults on payment plans for all city debt, and not background checking city debt for rideshare drivers. It's also limiting ticketing, towing, and impounding to only public safety-related issues.
I got a tipster email last night saying that city had no authority to close the Playpen, that it was a federal special anchorage area. Here’s what the mayor’s office said:
I've updated my *own* Google map to include the new Latino Caucus map. By checking and unchecking boxes you can see:

Rep. Brad Schneider, the third member of Congress to test positive after sheltering with maskless colleagues during last Wednesday's insurrection at the Capitol, says "those that flout public health guidance should be sanctioned and immediately removed from the House floor."
Here’s the current scene outside City Hall on Lasalle. Protestors from several groups calling for the city to spend federal ARP dollars “to rescue our communities, not big banks or the police.” The mayor is expected to release her budget and detailed ARP plans later this month.
The AP has called it and Eileen O'Neill Burke has declared victory in Cook County State's Attorney Democratic primary race. Awaiting comment from challenger Clayton Harris III. After Friday's tally, O'Neill Burke was up by 1,556 votes. Updates to come:

Labour MP David Lammy says Boris Johnson's Brexit deal could harm the economy more than "the 2008 crash."
Well this is a change. The head of Chicago's Office of Financial Analysis, Kenneth Williams, has recommended ~$55 million in potential reductions from CPD's budget, including for things like tuition reimbursement, uniform allowance, supervisor quarterly pay and specialty pay.
I got to speak with Karen Lewis for my first Crain's story. She told me about being nervous for a visit to House Speaker Mike Madigan's office after SB7 passed. I said I was surprised to hear her say that – she was always presented as the dynamo that scared everybody else. 1/x
