BREAKING: The
@cta
Board just confirmed that the agency is DOUBLING rail operator training capacity in 2024! This is a BIG step toward rebuilding rail service! We look forward to supporting the agency's goal of training 200 rail operators this year!
CTA can only train 120 rail operators/year MAX. As of Aug, CTA had only trained 40 rail operators in 2023 That's no match for attrition. We urge the CTA to scale up its training capacity to train 300 rail operators/year:
We've been pushing CTA to prioritize training more rail operators. Last month, 850 advocates asked CTA to hold more trainings next year, but the agency ignored us. Next month, we'll be in Springfield fighting for governance reforms that make the agency more accountable to riders!
Thankfully I’m heading to the airport so I “only” have to wait 20 minutes, and there probably will be more than one train to Forest Park in the next hour, but the only thing more painful than seeing how far the CTA has fallen is seeing literally zero efforts to improve things.
Did you know
@cta
only has the capacity to train 120 rail operators/year? That's no match for how many operators are lost through attrition each year & has led to 24% service cuts since 2020. We're pushing the agency to increase capacity so they can train 300 rail operators/year!
It's official! Illinois law now requires the state to cover 100% of the cost of walking + biking infrastructure when it’s needed on state roads. The day's of critical elements like sidewalks + bike lanes getting stripped out of key projects are over!🚶♀️👨🦽🚲
Ack! Now would be a great time for
@cta
leadership to commit to holding 10 rail operator training classes next year with 30 people in each. That's the first step to returning to running more service. DC & NYC have added service... why can't Chicago? Your move CTA!
Los Angeles is blowing Chicago out of the water when it comes to prioritizing transit service. Agencies all over the country are addressing workforce challenges & adding service, but CTA is falling further behind. It's time for a change!

The historic Route 66 is getting a major upgrade! Jackson Avenue in West Loop will soon boast some of the most robust bike infrastructure along a state roadway. This is a great example of what's possible all across Illinois!
Riders deserve better. CTA's service levels & reliability continue to tumble. Meanwhile, agencies across the country (incl. Pace & Metra) are increasing service & turning the corner on workforce challenges.
In 2024, we're asking the state to reform how CTA is funded & operated!
Did you know Chicago is the largest city in America without a Bus Rapid Transit line? We're also light years behind cities like LA, Seattle & Minneapolis in building dedicated bus lanes. It's time for the City of Chicago & State of Illinois to prioritize more bus lanes ASAP!
Chicago’s bus lane mileage is pathetic relative to peer cities. It’s past time for our roadway agencies to lead in not just planning but building dozens of bus only lanes - an incredibly inexpensive way to rightsize streets and prioritize sustainable transportation. 🚌 🌎 ❤️
More folks would take CTA if they ran more service. Advocates are waiting for President Carter to prioritize training more bus/rail operators. The ball is in your court CTA!
Chicagoans who choose to ride CTA instead of driving save an extra $14K a year, according to the latest report from APTA. Imagine all the great things you can get with that extra dough. 💰
We often hear CTA say "we can't find enough people to work!", but the agency doesn't even have a live job posting for rail flaggers - a prerequisite for becoming a rail operator 🙃
The “nationwide operator shortage” isn’t because “no one wants to work”, it’s because the hurdles to get a job as an operator at most transit agencies are stupidly high
The CEO of the DC transit agency took 600 trips on the system last year! The best transit leaders & board members are those who frequently use the system. It shows them what riders experience every day.
226m trips! Thx you for riding
#yourmetro
. My ~600 trips in 2023 were part of the 38% overall increase in ridership last year. Let’s get our funding issue resolved so 2024 will continue to grow! See you onboard.

We've been pushing CTA to hold 10 rail operator training classes in 2024. More classes would go a LONG way toward addressing deep service cuts since 2019. Other transit agencies have returned to pre-pandemic service levels & so can CTA!
Yesterday, the CTA L lines ran:
99% Pink
98% Yellow
94% Green
90% Red
90% Blue
89% Brown
80% Orange
74% Purple
... of scheduled trains. Since 2020, CTA L Service has been cut by 24%. Riders deserve frequent and reliable transit, with return to at least pre-2020 levels.
We hope CTA can reverse its service collapse, but we fully trust the data
@ctaaction

In 2019, CTA was ahead of LA Metro’s ridership by 84 million rides. LA, NYC & DC are overcoming workforce challenges that have impacted agencies nationwide, but CTA remains an outlier. We encourage the agency to hold more operator training classes & improve working conditions!
We often hear from Chicago transit riders who are fed up with buses that are unreliable & delayed. Thankfully, we know how to fix this problem & the solution is very do-able: prioritizing buses on the city's streets. Let’s make 2024 the Year of the Bus!
Did you know that
@cta
bus service levels have decreased 29% since 2007? We're pushing CTA to renew sign-on bonuses for bus operators, improve working conditions & modernize work schedules to attract/retain more operators. We also advocate daily for more bus priority projects!
Why aren’t we doing this? Sweden reversed its snow-clearance priorities by plowing walkways first before roads after learning that 3 times more people are injured while walking in icy conditions than while driving.

The Mayor has an opportunity to leave a lasting legacy by prioritizing Bus Rapid Transit! We were thrilled to see CTA & CDOT release their Better Streets for Buses plan. Now let's get to work to speeding up those buses!
A decade ago, the Chicago Department of Transportation drew up a plan to build protected bike lanes on a network of key cycling streets extending throughout the city. Regrettably, only 15 percent of this network has been built.
BREAKING: At today's CTA board meeting, President Dorval Carter claims the agency will be able to restore bus and rail service back to 2019 service levels next year! (see 32:09 in video below)
CTA's failure to address workforce challenges is unique among peer transit agencies. 850+ advocates contacted CTA, urging the agency to outline a plan to restore 2019 service level. The agency never replied. It's time to change how we govern & operate CTA
"Data collected by the city and now made public shows almost half of Chicago’s millions of monthly ride-share trips are taking place in just a few wealthy, crowded and already transit-rich areas."
#investintransit
#backonthebus
100% this. We're fighting every day for CTA to train enough operators to run its scheduled service & to advertise open flagger positions. Meanwhile, Metra has launched a transit ambassadors program, is opening a new station & transitioning to regional rail!
Metra rolling out transit ambassadors before the CTA is not something I expected, but just one more data point how (1) Metra is taking post-pandemic recovery and operational restructuring seriously and how (2) the CTA isn't.
It would be irresponsible to plow ahead with highway expansion that would further harm quality of life in our neighborhoods. It’s been proven these projects don’t deliver lasting congestion relief, so why do state and city officials keep pretending the will???
Sustainable transportation advocates agree: During a time of climate crisis, it's messed up that Chicago and Illinois officials want to use federal infrastructure funds to expand the Ike and other Illinois highways.
It's past time to reform how we govern & fund an unaccountable CTA. The collapse of service & the (completely solvable) tracker issues have left so many people in the region behind.
#RevenuesAndReform

We've been pushing CTA to improve its operations, but we know the agency doesn't receive nearly enough state funding. One funding source our state could tap into are federal highway dollars. This funding can often be "flexed" toward both transit capital projects AND operations!
