A little late to this but the two most vulnerable Democratic House members from Texas, US Reps Colin Allred and Lizzie Fletcher, both say they will vote for impeachment.
Just a staggering figure:
@OpenSecretsDC
calculates that Russia has spent $164,597,221 on American lobbying since 2016, the year it became clear that Russia was interfering in our elections.
I have made the decision to not seek reelection for the 23rd Congressional District of Texas in order to pursue opportunities outside the halls of Congress to solve problems at the nexus between technology and national security.
My phone is absolutely exploding with texts from Republican operatives reacting to the retirement. ALL have a word I don't normally use on this forum and my mother highly disapproves of...but it rhymes with duck.
I'm following Beto O'Rourke in my native Tarrant County. Cars are circling a sprawling middle school parking lot and illegally parking in fire lanes bc the place is packed on a rainy day. This is a conservative bastion. I've never seen anything like this.
But here's what really matters: Joe Biden benefits from something no other modern Dem presidential nominee has in Texas - reverse coattails. There is an absolute army of downballot Dem candidates running for office in Texas.
I’m at a Beto O’Rourke event in my hometown of Fort Worth. How serious is the downballot organizing? I witnessed canvassing for a Congressional race while I was in line for the ladies’ room.
I covered Sen. Murray when she was the DSCC chair in the 2012 cycle. I can't remember covering an official who was more cautious with her words and who stayed on message more (which could be frustrating in that context.) This isn't someone who pops off.
!!!! Sen. Murray, No. 3 Senate Democrat: "Any Senator who stands up and supports the power of force over the power of democracy has broken their oath of office. Senators Hawley and Cruz should resign.”
GWB on why he wrote a book on immigration: "I was deeply concerned about the rhetoric around immigration...& so I thought it was appropriate to basically say to the American people let's refocus our attn on immigration in a way that understands the contributions immigrants make"
@OpenSecretsDC
Which serves as your reminder that Russian bad behavior didn't begin at the end of last week, when lobbying firms suddenly decided to start dumping unsavory Russian clients.
I’ve covered Texas politics in one form or another for nine years. I have never, ever heard outrage on the scale I am hearing right now from Texas Democratic officials over the presidential nomination fight. Story to come later today.
I talked to nearly two dozen Texas Democrats who are extremely freaked out about the notion of Bernie Sanders as the party nominee and the downballot implications. A number went on the record:
Dear Hollywood: I’m watching a movie about Texans, and it’s the thousandth time I’ve seen us portrayed as using the southern accent. We don’t talk that way. These accents are not interchangeable. We don’t drop our Rs. We create opportunities for our Rs. (See
#Waterburger
.)
It's now official: Decision Desk calls
#TX21
for freshman R U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, as he defeats former state Sen. Wendy Davis by six points at the time of the call. We have a big story on all the US House races coming (except we keep having to stop and update before we publish..)
So I was in the Senate chamber yesterday, and I was struck by how the lay of the land was not how I imagined it while watching TV on Wednesday. I thought it might be helpful to draw it out for people who aren’t able to attend to help get their bearings beyond the isolated camera
@evanasmith
@SpeakerPelosi
Evan: You were the impediment [to impeachment.] Now you're the instrument. What happened?
Pelosi: The facts.
And then she name dropped Willie Nelson who's in attendance.

1/ So. Some bittersweet news. I am leaving the Texas Tribune and will be taking a break from daily Washington political journalism beginning in July - it's been a wild few years in the news. I need a bit of normalcy, if only for a little while.
For the readers in the political class: These charges of sexism aren’t from a handful of disgruntled women. I interviewed 50 for a reason. They’re people you’ve worked with - and for.
These are obscure Democratic candidates you may never have heard of. But they're running for office in places Dems never competed in only four years ago. And they're raising piles of money.
U.S. Rep. Marc Veasey - who's one of the best Dem Caucus team players among Texas Dems - is now in for an impeachment inquiry. It's a cascade coming out of Texas now.
There is no better illustration of life in Washington in this era: Two years ago, two House Reps live-streamed a road trip from Texas to DC while extolling the virtues of bipartisanship. I have no idea what Beto O’Rourke’s future holds, but neither man will be in Congress in 2021
US Rep Sheila Jackson Lee - a senior member of the Homeland Security committee - just now on CNN re: Christopher Krebs firing: “I think we are in a crisis with his firing .”
2. I wrote a story about coming retirements last November. To give you the scale of what we are looking at in my delegation - Mike Conaway and Will Hurd were not even on my mind when I wrote the story:
Side note: When I took this job in late 2014, there was one competitive federal race (
#TX23
), and neither side had a competitive primary. Now I can't find time to get a haircut.
It looks like we have our first confirmed Texas US House challenger-outraises-incumbent of Q2: Pete Sessions (R) raised $695k in the last three months. Colin Allred (D) camp said last week he raised almost $1.1 million. I expect to see more numbers like this in coming days.
#TX32
GWB on Jan 6: "I was disgusted. I can't remember what I was doing...I was sick to my stomach..to see our nation's Capitol being stormed by hostile forces...I'm still disturbed when I think about it."
Biden offers coattails because of his polling. But these candidates in turn offer him a growing GOTV infrastructure and a massive television advertising campaign making the Dem case in some of the most expensive media markets in the country.
This is kind of wild: I just went through the TX US House delegation, and it's not totally insane to see a path where Democrats could have a majority of the 36 seats in Texas. This was completely unfathomable three years ago.
Just got off the phone with state Sen. Sylvia Garcia, on how she feels about the likelihood she will be among the first Latinas elected to Congress from Texas: "Well, I don't really ever think about those things. I never really wanted to be the first. I wanted to be the best."
It’s so wonderful how engaged people can be with the Congressional Baseball Game when it’s broadcasted across the country. It would also be lovely if the Congressional Women’s Softball game would ever be received in the same way.
Ducklo should have been fired immediately, but the amount of time reporters have spent discussing this is a good argument for the irrelevancy of the White House press corps
There’s so much more going on in Texas than the polls. This is a thread from a couple of weeks ago explaining why politics is so incredibly unstable in Texas:
If my math is right, between the retirements of 2018 cycle and now 2020 cycle, the Texas delegation will lose 187 years of seniority....And that's just so far.
It’s hard to find operatives of any stripe who will say out loud on the record or off that they think Beto O’Rourke can defeat Ted Cruz in the Senate race - at this point. But there are starting to be GOP tremors about the down-ballot effects of this race.
Congressional candidate Wendy Davis' fundraising numbers are in: She raised $3.4 million in the third quarter. Her opponent for
#TX21
is Republican U.S. Rep. Chip Roy.
The DCCC is going nuclear on a Democratic Congressional candidate in Texas. In three cycles of covering these races, I ain't seen anything like this. Story to come soon.
#TX07
@evanasmith
@SpeakerPelosi
Pelosi, on whether impeachment or anything else could cost her to lose control of the House: "Doesn't matter. Our first responsibility is to protect and defend the Constitution.
#tribfest19
I think an important thing to understand about O’Rourke campaign is this-I’m from FW. It’s a big city but not a place where politicians frequently stop in for public events. They go to Dallas. I hear abt O’Rourke coming through at least once a month. Showing up is a big deal here
I will always put 2016 as the most shocking night of my career. But what I am seeing in the Democratic early vote tonight in Texas is getting pretty damn close to that.
Parents’ House in Fort Worth. I got my time zones mixed up and had 20 minutes to dry my hair, put on makeup and build a set. Livingston household looked like Chris cleaning the house in Adventures in Babysitting. All credit for Abby making air goes to Mom and Dad.
Here’s the thing: I’ve probably been asked 100 times in the last few days what the
#TXSEN
margin is gonna be, like it’s the TX-OU game. I’ve asked other people the same question 100 times. The God’s honest truth is nobody knows in Texas and anyone pretending to know doesn’t know.
O’Rourke said it is “correct” that a 2020 presidential campaign is off the table. Cites his family’s needs as a reason to not run. “You have my commitment tonight to not run for any office” in the next six years.
#TribFest18
@evanasmith
@SpeakerPelosi
Pelosi: I have handled this with great care, with moderation...This is very bad news for our country. If it as it seems to be our president has engaged in something that is so far beyond what our founders had in mind...This goes beyond any guard rails.
#tribfest19
Today is my last day at
@TexasTribune
. I am leaving forever grateful for what the people there allowed me to do, and for the many adventures along the way. 1/2
New internal poll via Sri Kulkarni campaign has Kulkarni (D) up over Nehls (R) 48-43% in
#TX22
. Biden up over Trump 52-43%. This is suburban Houston - Fort Bend County. Ancestrally, it's Tom DeLay's old district.
I used to send Gwen Ifill a holiday card. It makes me sad every year when I see her on my list, but I can't bear to take her off. But now she's going to be on every envelope.
@chrislhayes
I think statewide odds are still clearly with the Republicans. But the biggest difference between now and 2016 is how much downballot activity there is. There are dem candidates running sophisticated campaigns in every major media market. Reverse coattails.
I’ve covered US Rep Lizzie Pannill Fletcher, D-Houston, since the day she launched her campaign in 2017. Lays low. Easy going. She was in the gallery during the Capitol attack. The delivery of her floor speech is far angrier than the prose below:
This is my third full cycle covering Texas politics. Typically, the retirements drop in November. It’s considered good etiquette to do it then, and give one’s would-be successors at least a month to get their affairs in order and to decide on running.
