If you've been eager to dive into the world of machine learning engineering but don't know where to start, I've got something special for you!
If you've started your ML journey already and are stuck somewhere since it can be so unstructured, this will also be great for you!
UPDATE! I am going to Carnegie Mellon University for a PhD in AI!
Back when I received the acceptance mail, I was in the midst of finals for my CS BSc program at the Federal University of Agric Abeokuta. I promised to document my journey once my schedule cleared up. Here it is!
Nov 2017: Doing sheet metal bending for welding construction. I had just been accepted to for CS at FUNAAB. I needed to save hard for tuition & living expenses.
Aug 2023: Got my office key for PhD. I had finished my BSc in April & now at the world's foremost institution for CS.
So excited to announce that my research paper got accepted into the NeurIPS workshop on ML4D 2021!🥺😊
This is probably my biggest achievement in this year, for now. Since it's my first major research project, + it's a first authorship in a conference as important as NeurIPS 1/n
I'm not sure how I'd be able to focus properly to wrap up my few final exams next week - plus my undergrad thesis defense the following week. 🤧
From BSc. in FUNAAB, Nigeria, to PhD in a US top 3 CS school... Oluwa oh 😭🤲
My student is interested in Reinforcement learning, and
@johanobandoc
(
@Mila_Quebec
and Google Brain) was kind enough to create a list of resources for her. I find the list quite thorough, so I'm making it public.
If "machine learning for robots" interests you, you'd like this!
If you're interested in getting into machine learning (research) but you feel like a noob, below I outline several steps to help get you started - based on my personal experiences.

I've read ~50 SOPs (via STEM for development, my personal network, random email requests, and my recent Twitter form) over the past 2 months, and these are COMMON MISTAKES I've noticed graduate school applicants making quite often:

Last year, 8 of us from our local student AI community got accepted into Indaba, which we attended thanks to MLC's fundraiser.
In 2023, 21 people from this same unit were accepted to Indaba. They are taking a bus to Accra to save money but still need help.
Amazing 1½ days at

! Thanks to all who joined my talk and endured 150 slides. Find them in the thread. Also, thanks to those in the impromptu 1hr+ Q&A session post-talk
I was told some folks came on stage earlier today & mentioned my talk as their favourite, ẹ ṣé o!☺️
This is relevant for anybody considering grad school and wondering if they have what it takes to get into the most competitive schools.
Khaulat is resuming her MSc at Stanford. Interestingly, we both attended Nigeria's regular 'B' schools, and we aren't even 1st class graduates!
How do you ACTUALLY get in???
I recently filmed this video with

We talked about how you can apply and actually get into top US schools for grad school 👇
Are you thinking of applying to PhD programs this fall, but you are struggling to find profs?

Target interests: Low-resource/Efficient ML/NLP, NLP/AI for society/social good.
I'm not sure of how best to express how grateful we feel right now, bcs this is so overwhelming. 🥺
Thanks to everyone that made this happen - via donations, retweets, & mentioning it to others.🙏🏾 Bcs of your kindness & generosity, all 21 students will be at the Indaba! 🥺❤️

+ It was my first time in Kwara and that was fun! 😍
Thanks to

for affording me this experience. 🥰
If you are applying to grad school this year, esp. in computer science, is a goldmine!
If you've been accepted to a graduate program and are a URM, consider submitting your SOP there to inspire other URMs who may feel intimidated. I've submitted mine too!
Grad school app deadlines are near already! Are you applying, and would you like a round of feedback on your app docs? I want to spend a chunk of my Thanksgiving break on this.
I'm specifically targeting URMs applying to computer science PhDs, but it's OK if you are not one.
Apparently, I called some set of people "drag & drop" while speaking so I have to be hiding from the data analysts and Power BI "developers" at

I recall hearing this anthem played in this hall during our matriculation in '18. I was moved to tears & made an emotional promise to return to this hall for the convocation as one of FUNAAB's best products.
Sad I missed

In these articles, I dive into my BG, the experiences that have shaped me, and the factors that led me to pursue a PhD. I also share my journey through the app process and how it all culminated in studying at the world's top CS school, fresh from Alabata.

I am grateful to be standing where I am now, despite the challenges I've faced along the way. As I look ahead to my PhD journey, I feel a mix of excitement and anticipation. I know it won't be easy, but I am confident in my abilities and the resilience I've built over the years.

Documenting my stories started as self-reflection and hoping they'd be useful to someone, but I never defined "someone."
I get notes, even from Asia (which is 100% unexpected). I am grateful for them, esp with me feeling jaded every 2–4 days. And I like to hear their stories too.
Happened to me < a wk ago.
I was going to take up a job that involves relocation & visa sponsorship. I'd passed the interviews, & we'd discussed housing & compensation. I sent over my docs for the visa processing only to be told a week later I didn't pass the security clearance.
Leaving the country just has a lot of problems too. Nigeria is not rated at all internationally. The way foreign employers treat our passports is heartbreaking. Everything is just hard as a Nigerian.

Spent ~90% of my time facilitating our open-source bootcamp throughout last week & I spent the prior 3 weeks designing the program! 😬
Now we have ~34 (previously Git/GitHub noobs) students making the push for GSoC/GSoD & ~7 teams vying for Google Solution Challenge! 🤗🥳

In case this blows up, we're currently trying to raise money for a couple of our local AI students to attend the Indaba in Accra in ~10 days.
We have around ¼th of the bills left to raise. Consider donating or retweeting, at the least. A $1 donation goes a long way. Thank you🙏🏾

I finally got that 2022 year-in-review article out of the way.😴
It took me about 2 weeks to write it bit by bit - a testament of how lazy (and maybe more careful) I'd become at certain activities.
Hey folks,
The tutorial contains soft, baby steps into web scraping, using the DSN's Bootcamp Attendees' page for the experiment. 🌝
Read and enjoy. 🥰
You may also share it with others who might be interested in web scraping too.
Remember, ML research is a journey, not a destination. It takes time, effort, and dedication, but you'll have a lasting impact on the field with hard work. So, let's get started!🚀
I plan to write more pieces on each of the steps I highlighted (and more), so stay tuned!
I just published "Practical Guide into Data Analysis and Machine Learning using Python" on Medium.

I don't know the guy that said that Data Science is the sexiest job of the 21st century,
but I definitely know that Data gathering and Data cleaning are the unsexiest tasks of the 21st century, 😒 and those makeup over 50% of a Data Scientist's workload. 🤕
Kind hearts,

Additionally, if you could take a moment to spread the word through retweets, it would mean the absolute world to us.

Writing their first draft a few days or weeks before the deadline:
It's more of a marathon. Begin early, allowing ample time for multiple revisions and better clarity as you keep reading about your intended research focus.
Aim for your first draft two months before the deadline.
This year's high number of acceptances is a ripple effect of our success stories from last year. 3 from our group won the Ideathon at Indaba, with 1 receiving mentorship from Google Research. 2 co-organize workshops at this year's Indaba; 1 nearly became a C4AI research scholar.
Focusing on negativities as highlights (URMs, esp.);
Refrain from negatively portraying your school, country's education system, a professor's grading system, or environment. If you can't find a way to spin it positively, it probably shouldn't be a highlight of your statement.
Tagging the young African researchers that I know and I look up to.

Please help share within your circle❤️
Focusing too much on their challenges (URMs, esp.);
Avoid a pity narrative. While challenges should be acknowledged, don't make your inability to afford a laptop the focus. Emphasize your research experiences and personal growth, and slide in how hurdles have shaped your journey
