Our two-year-old church plant bought a building from a church that recently closed its doors
We had our first Sunday morning in the new building today. The building isn’t perfect, but it’s ours! More important, it will, Lord willing, allow a permanent place for faithful ministry
The Nickel Boys won the 2020
#Pulitzer
for fiction. Very rare for the same author to win two in thier lifetime. Yet if anyone deserves it, it’s Colson Whitehead.
Some personal news: I have accepted a full-time teaching position at Cedarville University as an Assistant Professor of Theology. Our family will be moving to Ohio in the coming weeks. We so love KC but we are eager and thankful for this next season of our lives.
I have successfully defended my dissertation.
Thanks be to God, my incredible family, and my doctoral committee-
@MattMBarrett
and
@jvfesko
. I'm sure I'll have more to say later but for now, I'm simply enjoying the moment. Thanks to all who prayed for & supported me along the way
Some folks don't actually have a love for the beauty that is Christian theology.
Some folks have a love for platform and Christian theology happened to be a useful vehicle to get there.
I married a woman of immeasurable talent. One of the many talents she rarely showcases is her ability to draw. I once expressed a desire for her to draw a few of my favorite theologians. For my birthday, she surprised me with the first installment—a portrait of Calvin.
Some personal news: I'm beyond excited to announce that I am joining the faculty of Midwestern Seminary and Spurgeon College where I'll be teaching theology. Excited to continue pressing into the good work the Lord is doing in Kansas City and beyond.
"If outrage were a sign of godliness, then the devil would be the godliest soul in the cosmos." -
@drmoore
Living in a constant state of outrage is not a sign of emotional maturity or Christian wisdom.
This is my oldest sister, Lynn. Over the past few months, she's had a growing interest in gospel matters. That all culminated this morning as she was baptized.
Pained me not to be with her due to C19, but her baptism is a loud proclamation that the Lord is still on the move.
This is Doug. He’s a faithful retired pastor and over the course of a few years, ending yesterday, he’s gifted me his entire library. Hundreds and hundreds of volumes. Full sets of folks like Owen, Warfield, Flavel, Calvin, Luther, Fuller, Boston, Wesley, and many more.
It was my freshman year of college when I first experienced how transformational formal education can be. I knew that year I wanted to one day be a professor. The fact that I finally get the opportunity to teach theology full-time is still surreal to me. What an amazing privilege
Feels a bit surreal announcing this but I'm happy to announce that I've officially signed a contract to publish my first book--a variation of my dissertation for the wonderful REDS series.
Tentative title: No Shadow of Turning: Divine Immutability and the Economy of Redemption
Our world is not in need of "owning one another" or "mic drops" or whatever else we might call over-charged rhetoric.
We are in need of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Excited to share the cover of my forthcoming book with
@BHpub
—Fruitful Theology: How the Life of the Mind Leads to the Life of the Soul.
In this book, I hope to show how, unlike much of what we see today, theology should lead to love, peace, kindness, gentleness, etc.
While I defended my dissertation in May, I officially graduated with my PhD in Systematic Theology today. There are far too many folks to thank but I specifically want to thank my incredible family for their unshakable support and love along the way.
This is simply an appreciation post for
@trillianewbell
. Trillia is, without exaggeration, one of my favorite voices in Evangelicalism. Her constant kindness and overt joy should be a model for us all—what a gift she is to the church.
Excited to announce that book number two is officially under contract. Tentatively titled *Fruitful Theology: How the Life of the Mind can lead to the Fruit of the Spirit*
In this book, I hope to show how theology done well should lead to kindness, joy, gentleness, love, etc.
We have a cover.
After a few rounds of edits, we are nearing a final manuscript for this book. Excited to share the cover and to share that all signs, at least right now, point to this book being released at ETS this year. So grateful to the many who helped get to this point.
This reading room in the School of Biblical and Theological Studies building at
@cedarville
is gorgeous. The books were the personal library of Wiersbe and the university did great work in making this study space.
We are having a baby!
The road to pregnancy has not been easy for us, but we are overjoyed it is finally here. Words can't express the thankfulness we feel that the Lord has given us this grace. Kristen is almost fifteen weeks and baby Kurtz is expected to arrive early September
Mark Dever has said about ministry: "Young men tend to overestimate what they can do in one or two years, and underestimate what they can do in ten"
I think this is true for those of us in academic settings also. That article/book you're writing *probably* won't change the world
Cohen Haddon Kurtz made his arrival yesterday.
12.30.23, 9:02AM, 8.12 pounds, 22 inches long.
My wife and I are beyond grateful for this long awaited gift from the Lord. He is more than we deserve.
GUYS! I'm sitting at a coffee shop in Kansas City and
@DexterFowler
and Marcell Ozuna just rode right by me on
@BirdRide
scooters!
I'll see them both tomorrow as well as I cheer on the
@Cardinals
at The K.
#TimeToFly
Author copies are here! Feels a touch surreal holding my first book in hand.
The moment was made sweeter by my wife and daughter surprising me at my office with them. Was able to read the dedication to my daughter.
”Talking about racial reconciliation *in light* of the gospel is not the same thing as talking about racial reconciliation *instead* of the gospel. You can do both.” -
@samuel_parkison
@emmauskc
My wife is pregnant with a baby boy!
The journey for our second child has had a few seasons of sorrow so we are thrilled to be this far with both baby and mom healthy. If the Lord wills, by year's end we will meet our boy—Cohen Haddon Kurtz.
We'd appreciate your prayers.
Me: “If you were the President, what’s the first thing you’d do?”
My sweet wife: “I’d say, ‘
@drmoore
is in charge. Let’s get ethical.’”
I married a perfect woman.
We planned to do a bookstore and dinner for date night tonight. Awhile into looking at books, Kristen leaned over and asked if I wanted to cancel the dinner reservation so we could spend more time and money on books. She’s perfect.
I'm here to once again say that the formula to happiness just may be:
- Read good fiction
- Read good poetry
- Read good theology proper
- Drink good coffee
Many of us are familiar with the brilliance and grace of the Ortlund men. However, we just finished up a
@forthechurch
interview with
@JaniOrtlund
and I was blown away by her wisdom and kindness. Be on the lookout for these videos soon.
#TGC21
Little update here: we've not said anything publicly about this book but have been working on it for a bit. It is not an overly brilliant idea—simply hoping to help bring some of the Trinitarian retrieval work into the local church. Hope it can serve you or other church members.
I’m learning there is a major difference between those who see theology’s primary usefulness as a war tactic and those who view theology as a well of joy.
We bought a house!
We've lived in KC for seven years now. However, not until I finished the PhD and joined the faculty were we ever sure KC is where we'd end up long term. It feels great to plant roots with the purpose of being in the city for the foreseeable future.
I almost *never* partake in publicly criticizing a post and am sure I will regret doing so here. (Because social media is silly)
However, this is a really, really sad way to wield sola scriptura and a good way to miss out on a treasure trove of beauty.
It always hurts when I get a great article submission at
@forthechurch
but am forced not to publish it because the author is a jerk to others on social media. Friends, be kind.
Page proofs are in from
@BHpub
! Eager to get this one out. Praying folks will be blessed and encouraged by an understanding of theology that leads to love, peace, patience, and kindness as opposed to the kind of theology in which you have to be angry or divisive to participate.
Reread this tonight to decide if I want to make it required reading for my Theology 1 students. The verdict is yes. This short work is a great example of making the Biblical data come alive while also utilizing helpful Nicene grammar and categories. What a wonderful introduction.
Today is my final day as an employee of
@MBTS
and a resident of KC. These last eight years have been filled with so many blessings it would be hard to recount. The Lord has made this season of life sweet and deeply meaningful. Thanks to many great friends who made it special.
My next project is officially under contract. I'm excited to sign with
@ivpacademic
to write a book on the doctrine of divine incomprehensibility and some implications for theological method and language. This one has been on my mind for some time and I'm eager to get it out.
Well,
#ChiefsKingdom
has officially shutdown Main Street in celebration. This city is is going to have a fun night.
Congratulations, Kansas City. You are amazing.
I've never regretted those moments I've chosen kindness and level-headedness.
Nuanced wisdom might not win you an audience, but it will likely win you peace of mind.
A lesser known fact about me: for a good chunk of my life, skateboarding took up most of my time. I felt quite known when I received this incredible gift in the mail from a good friend--a custom skateboard with the cover of my first book, Fruitful Theology.
I have a really hard time working from home because I often get distracted by playing with Finley.
I thought working outside in the gorgeous weather would prevent that distraction. It didn’t.
She’s my very favorite “distraction” and I hope she keeps these antics up all her days
Working on some names for
@BHpub
of folks to send an advanced copy. Instead of sending the book to just "influencers", I'd love to send some to folks who embody the book.
I'd love suggestions below of folks you think use theology as a well of joy instead of a mere war strategy.
Got the official green light to begin working on my dissertation from the doctoral office. I'm excited to be working with
@MattMBarrett
and
@jvfesko
as my dissertation committee. I'll be writing on the soteric significance of a classical understanding of divine immutability.
I am here to once again remind you that you should probably be reading more Michael Allen. No hot-takes, no social media shenanigans, no tribalism, just careful Christian reflection that is good for my soul.
Finley Jane Kurtz
September 6th, 2:55AM, 7.14 pounds, 19.5 inches long.
There are no words to express how thankful Kristen and I are to welcome this beautiful little one. She has already captured our hearts and we could not adore her more. God is truly good.
Today would have been the due date for the baby we lost at 16 weeks. In the 7 months we’ve lived in Ohio, we’ve now had two miscarriages. We don’t often share about our fertility struggles, but my wife’s reflection from the other day is powerful & shows the kind of woman she is.
Give your life to something constructive, develop an appetite for beauty, make good friends, read good literature, show much kindness, love real people not just the idea of people, and pay *very little* attention to social media. This might be a helpful recipe these days.
Received this email from a student:
Dr. Kurtz, I recently read Edwards on the Trinity (attached). I was left with some questions, esp. the relationship between Edwards, Augustine, & G Naz. Could I come by your office sometime to talk about it?
I have the best job in the world.
One of the many wonderful things
@rayortlund
demonstrated in his ministry was speaking encouragement into the millennial generation when others merely mocked or scoffed at us as we found our footing in ministry. I so badly want to do the same thing with Gen Z. Be an encourager.
One week until I defend this thing. It’s strange to think about how much of my life has gone into this stack of papers over the past few years. Hard to believe much of it comes to a hopeful close in seven days.
Finished my first ever read through of Narnia this morning. What a fun journey. Don’t know why it took me so long to get to them, but I’m glad I did.
Further up, and further in.
This afternoon I finished this masterpiece. It is simply an outstanding novel. Not sure I’ve encountered such emotional intelligence in a work of fiction before.
In an email to the good folks at
@9Marks
, my phone autocorrected my email sign-off to "I'm Christ" instead of "in Christ." Just want to go on record to state that I do not, in fact, claim divinity. That is all.
We got word today that I'll finally be able to start going with my wife to our prenatal checkups. Due to COVID, I haven't been able to go for almost our entire pregnancy. We only have a few weeks left, but still celebrating the small wins.
Publishers take note, this volume may have the perfect margins and layout for academic volumes. The cleanness, font choice, and space have served me as a reader.
Lord willing, between now and the end of November, I will have two books release. During these next few months of getting these two books out and in the public, I'm going to try not to be "that guy" who posts way to much about his books; yet, I did write them so others would read
Small vocational victory here: I know most people would scoff at manuscripts for lectures, but its sadly the way I'm wired. I finally finished full manuscripts for both Theo. 1 & 2.
Theology 1 came in at 145 pages & 45,167 words.
Theology 2 came in at 184 pages & 58,279 words.
Hard to describe just how much
@forthechurch
and
@MBTS
mean to me.
Both have aided in developing my love of the Lord and his Church. Beyond grateful for this opportunity to serve both in a new way. Time to get to work,
#ForTheChurch
.
The Existence and Attributes of God by Stephen Charnock is one of my favorite works on the Doctrine of God. It is up there with Van Mastricht on my most-used treatments. So glad to see
@crossway
doing an updated edition of this great work.
D.A. Carson has been with us on campus at
@MBTS
the past two days for the annual Spurgeon Lectures. Today, he met with our residential PhD students and talked life and ministry in theological education.
Beyond grateful for days like this and will remember them for years to come
This is my 7-month-old daughter, Finley Jane Kurtz.
Fin's middle name is after three Janes: Lady Jane Grey, Jane Austen, and Jane Eyre. Jane Eyre is one of my wife's favorite novels and I'm sad to say that it took me till this week to ever pick it up.
It is simply *amazing.*
If a person's most consistent move on social media is to tear individuals or institutions down, you might do well to stay away from that account. Find the encouragers and those who build-up, they're worth a follow.
This photo popped up in my "memories" today, it's one of my favorites of my daughter and I. I was trying really hard to cross the finish line of my dissertation here and she was the best of writing breaks.
I broke the 100-page mark on my dissertation tonight. A small feat in the scheme of things, yet I'm thankful for these mile markers along-the-way. The research process for this project has made me all the more awe-filled at our unchanging God.
Great word here from Dr. Michael Haykin from
@SBTS
. "No Creed but the Bible" is itself a creed and it is one that will not protect you when the wolves come. We need winsome theological reasoning built on the foundation of the scriptures and protected by historical witness.
Reminded my students today that while I *love* my job and while teaching theology at an academic institution is an incredible blessing, local church members and local church pastors are still where it is at. Theology will always ultimately belong to the church, not the academy.
I'm sitting in a coffee shop working on a paper for
@tbmadsen
. He comes in, sits directly behind me, and pulls out two big red markers and a stack of papers and tells me he hopes his destroying other students' papers behind me is not intimidating or distracting as I write—it is.
Bavinck on the legacy of Augustine:
"Augustine does not belong to one Church, but to all Churches together...Our best, deepest and richest thoughts in dogmatics we owe to him. Augustine has been *the* dogmatician of the Christian Church."
A good reminder to read more Augustine.
My resolution for 2024 will be the same as it was for 2023: continue the slow prod towards stability and wisdom; further develop the ability to apprehend beauty and work hard to love God, my family, and my neighbors.
Wow. Regardless if you end up buying Barrett's notion of "Reformation as Renewal" in the end (which I do), you'll likely be impressed with the sheer amount of work that is obvious in this volume.
@MattMBarrett
has really served readers well here, what a gift.
@ZonderAcademic
