I'm excited to be teaching an online cohort on arguments for Christianity. We will dive deep into these 6 topics, with a view to real conversations and the pressing questions of our culture. Lots of time for interaction. This will be fun! Join us here:

That Tim Keller finished well means so much to so many in my generation. In a time of disintegration and distrust, his legacy for us is not just his gifts and insights, but his character. Now it's our turn to do the same in a new day.

Someone once said (maybe Eugene Peterson?) that the antidote to burnout is not rest, but wholeheartedness. In other words, it's not mere work that is killing us, but distractedness, clutter. I think about this almost daily. It's happy and freeing to pursue wholeheartedness.

Many critiques of @DavidAFrench ’s commentary on evangelical culture/politics basically boil down to: he keeps on making certain criticisms. But the same could be said of the OT prophets or the Reformers. So long as problems persist, it’s appropriate to keep bringing them up.

A verse I think about regularly in ministry: "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now" (John 16:12). We must consider others' limitations. We must not ask merely, "what is true?" but also "what is helpful?" Even Jesus waited on some things.

When I practice deliberate encouragement to others, it's amazing how often someone says, "this came at exactly the right time" or "I really needed that today." I've concluded that people are walking around needing encouragement like 80% of the time. Good to remember this!

The ancients stared at the stars most nights. We stare at screens most nights. Stars make the world feel huge. They remind us we are tiny. Screens often make the world feel small. They make us feel connected to everything. I wonder how much this contributes to our anxiety.

Re. the great resignation among clergy. What can churches do? Some short-term ideas: 1. give your pastor(s) a raise 2. offer a paid sabbatical 3. offer paid counseling or coaching 4. support their family (e.g., set up regular free babysitting for those with young kids)

David and Jonathan's friendship was completely platonic. Only in the modern era is it sexualized because we have an impoverished view of friendship. Our culture is eccentric in this regard. Anselm's letters to other medieval monks were way more extravagant but not sexual at all.

It's sad how many people get swayed by the whole "if you care about racism/justice, you are going liberal/Marxist" thing. The claim draws from fear, not logic. Follow the Bible (Micah 6:8). Don't let them muddy the waters with vague associations. Justice is good.

Some say condemning white supremacy is unnecessary because no one in the church supports it. This is false, partly for assuming the only alternative to condemnation is official support, rather than silence, minimizing, politicizing, whataboutism, etc. Racism can be subtle.

The Francis Schaeffer quote is so convicting. When arguing about the truth becomes a mere game to us—a mere intellectual exercise—then we become cruel. Even in our polemics, people must feel that we care for them. When we knock them over, we must be there to catch them.

No church has authority to change Christianity. That which was completely unknown to the apostles (like Mary's assumption) should not be made an obligatory Christian belief. This is the rationale underpinning sola Scriptura. It is resistance to ecclesial usurping.

Two misconceptions about doubt: 1. It only happens to immature Christians. C.S. Lewis wrote A Grief Observed in his late 50's. Job was a mature, godly father. Etc. 2. It is always bad. Sometimes, I believe, it's part of the birth pains to a deeper, stronger faith.

A favorite little detail in Scripture: "even the demons believe—and shudder" (James 2:19). Awesome to think of the demons shuddering in terror. When the world seems dark, good to remember: the light is far more frightening to the darkness than the darkness is to the light.

Preaching through II Timothy and this verse is just amazing: "if we are faithless, he remains faithful—for he cannot deny himself" (II Tim 2:13). God can no more disown those who trust in Him than he can deny his very identity. He is that committed.

I love the freeing feeling when you remember, "I don't need to weigh in on every controversy. It's not my job to fix social media. Back to happier tasks."

Here's a response to @ostrachan 's critique of William Lane Craig's views on the historical Adam. And a plea for more careful and more charitable engagement on issues like this.

If everyone would read this book, the world would be a better place. It's profoundly revealing about why we disagree so much, and what to do about it.

Did the flood of Noah cover the entire planet? Here I argue that the biblical story can be responsibly read describing a local event. My sincere belief is that the church's witness and unity is better served by allowing for that view.

When we remember that underneath aggressiveness and snark is often deep hurt and pain, it helps us respond without taking it personally and with more compassion and calmness.
