this weekend I went on a girls trip. 10 Black women flying first class. People literally could not process how it was possible.
Staff tried to send us to regular lines. Passengers made snide remarks. One guy even yelled "are they a higher class of people than I am?!"
Stay mad.
I honestly don't understand jealousy and gatekeeping.
It took me 9 years to get to Senior. I share everything I know so that it'll only take you a fraction of that time.
I hired someone for an entry-level tech job who didn't have a tech degree or any other tech experience.
But she's smart and kind and thoughtful. She interviewed better than the techies, so I took a chance and hired her.
Anyway, she's doing great! Maybe you should try it 😊
👋🏾Hi, I'm Angie. I've been coding for 20 years. I just coded an infinite loop and it took me a good 15 minutes to figure out why the process wasn't completing 🤡
The wait is over! I've just released my free
#Java
course! 🎉
The course is designed for beginners to programming, so if you or anyone you know has been wanting to get into coding, this is a great resource to do so.
I ran into a basic configuration issue and couldn't find a solution online.
After I figured it out, I wrote a simple post with the exact error message and the solution.

Everything doesn't have to be a think piece. Don't be afraid to share 🙏🏾
When I worked at IBM, there was a man who would work just until he earned enough money to do whatever he wanted to do next (e.g. backpacking across Europe for a month, etc) then he'd go on an unpaid LOA until he ran out of money.
I think about him often.
By default, HR added "Bachelors in Computer Science" to my job req. I removed it. I'm super glad I did.
I see you self-driven learners and bootcamp grads. I see you 🙌🏾
Let me be clear.
This man harassed me for a week. I ignored him.
Yesterday was HARD for Black Americans. He decided to turn up the volume on his racism.
I did not doxx him. I highlighted his own tweets and said dont hire him. I did not leak his private info, which I now have
don't have the spoons to reply to everyone but to those saying I'm lying, you're a huge part of the problem
you tell yourself a notable person is lying (for what reason, I cannot figure out) before you believe there are actual racists in...America
FYI, yall look really foolish
Today is one of the proudest moments of my career 🎉
Two years ago, I took on the ambitious task of creating a global virtual university,
@TestAutomationU
, that provides free tech courses for the community.
Today I’m elated to share that we are 100K engineers strong!!! ❤️🙏🏾❤️🙏🏾
I wrote this as a joke. Less than 12 hours ago.
A woman saw this, went to my profile, saw my pinned tweet, started my course, then DMed me to say she now sees coding is not rocket science and to count her in as one of the 1,908.
I may have a new mission.
Pro tip: Don't blindly implement your customers' suggestions. They'll hate it and still complain.
Listen to their *problem* and solve for that. You'll likely have a much better solution than the one they recommended.
this is why I find it so delusional when ppl assume any Black techie was given anything bc of diversity quotas
Even if the hiring mgr aims for diversity, if a Black person gets it, they were vetted more intensely and is 2x+ better than the competition
@dev_nikema
I found the Black engineers I referred were often judged more harshly than other candidates (feedback I provided to those workplaces), which I imagine is exceptionally common.
Friday, I I was honored by the Computer Science department of my alma mater NC State! Only 1 of 14 to ever receive this honor. What a special moment 🙏🏾
This video sums up our relationship with the police and how oblivious other citizens are.
The car with white people goes untouched. They are cheerfully waving to the camera, totally unaware of the black people being violated behind them.
This is America.
At my company, people feel comfortable saying "I messed something up. Here's how I'm going to fix it"
I never stopped to appreciate this small yet huge cultural aspect of the company. It's beautiful.
A guy DMed me 2 weeks ago saying how demeaning his boss was. He asked me what he should do.
I suggested he quit. He took my advice and a mere 2 weeks later he has landed a much better job!
Listen, if you're being mistreated, consider planning your escape. Life is short.
Don't @ me talking about I was wrong.
Racists have no place in our field, certainly not loud-mouth public racists.
I did your company a favor by shining light on his tweets. Some people charge for such services lol. You're welcome.
Tech Founder: We're working on a new enterprise product. Can we pick your brain for insights?
Me: Sure, my "pick-your-brain" rate is $X per hour
Tech Founder: PAY you???
LMAOOOO, do y'all think I help organizations get rich for free? Spoiler: I don't.
The problem with learning from experts is that they are so far removed from square one. Their material assumes some foundational knowledge.
Newbies, don't be afraid to share what you're learning. From the beginning. We - even the experts - need your fresh perspective!
A guy just asked me a question and before I could even answer he goes "can you check with an expert Java guy?".
To which my response was "I am the expert Java guy".
If you've ever considered writing a blog post but didn't because it was already covered by other people, please reconsider.
I'm searching for a tutorial on a topic and have passed on about 5 of them so far because their style doesn't resonate with how I learn.
We need options😊

I don't understand what is meant by 'self-taught'? Surely you learned from books, tutorials, speaking with others? No?
Whatever's the opposite of self-taught is what I am. Thank you to everyone who shares even an ounce of their knowledge with me, even if you don't know you are.
Junior devs, variable naming is SO important.
I'm working with one of my mentees right now and I can clearly see why she's getting confused. The variable names are not representative (enough) of what they are holding.
When I had her rename all of her variables, she excelled.
idk it feels lazy to invite me on your podcast/publication/etc to talk about being a WOC in tech. Everyone knows that without me opening my mouth
I'm one of ~350 Java Champions in the world
Inventor of 26 patents
Run a virtual university teaching ~100K
Theres more to discuss🙃
I used to sit around and wait to be noticed. Wait for the raise. Wait for the promotion. Hoping that someone would notice that I'm ready.
Over the past few years, I've befriending white men in the industry and noticed that they don't wait. They ask.
Move accordingly, y'all.
Everyday it becomes clearer to me...simplicity is not free.
The easier a product is to use is directly correlated with the effort, talent, and thoughtfulness the creators put into said product.
Happy birthday to my amazing son
@hackSultan
. The world is a better place because of you. I sincerely mean that from the bottom of my heart. Love you! 💕
ALSO, me being the generous queen that I am...
I tried to give him an out. We asked him multiple times to leave me alone. He said "no, make me". So we did.
Let me just say, I haven't heard a peep from him since. He now has something better to do than troll black people online.
Those trying to break into tech:
Please realize that the vast majority of people who like and comment favorably on your bridge-burning shitposts are going to work tomorrow and collecting paychecks. Do not get caught up in clout chasing. Stay focused on your goal.
Respectfully.
My 26th patent was issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office! 🎉
I hate people emailing me with a big group of strangers, so I (along with Ruthie Lyle) invented a method to protect users' privacy.
Sooo, several years ago, I considered going into DevRel but before making the jump, I needed advice. I reached out to the best developer advocate in the business, THEE Kelsey Hightower, and asked if he could spare one piece of advice.
He said "call me". It was a Saturday.
Today I'm announcing my retirement from Google. Even the best rides come to an end. As I turn the page on this chapter, I realized I've spent the last 25 years learning how to work, I hope to spend the rest of my life learning how to live.
Your newest Java Champion couldn't figure out why her program wasn't working, only to discover she used = instead of == in a condition.
I teach this stuff to people and yet still goof up. You're doing fine ❤️
instead of geometry and trig, I wish my high school courses were about taxes, retirement plans and investing.
how did you learn these life skills? from your parents as a kid, or did you learn on your own as n adult?
Expert remote workers, sooooo, how do you keep from snacking all day long? 🍪🍦🧀🍩🍫
Asking for the entire in-office workforce who is suddenly working from home now.
When backend coding, I am a goddess. My every command is obeyed 🦸🏽♀️
When frontend coding, I am a scrub. Begging and pleading that the code will just do as I ask 😫

If you're currently job hunting in tech, make like musical chairs and *quickly* find somewhere to sit down and be still for a bit.
Who resparked the master branch convo right now?
It's upsetting me and my homegirls.
We are literally fighting to save lives and y'all are fighting to save a software term.
We're in a war against racsim. Keep your ridiculous term (for now) and pick a bigger battle.
It's soooo hard to land that first tech job these days. I'm at a loss for what more to tell those looking to break in.
Can you share your story here of how you landed that first tech job?
Imposter Syndrome has been toying with me for weeks. I'm fighting her back but ngl she's been getting a few licks in
A dear friend has been quietly collecting quotes about me and my impact from people in the industry. He sent me FIFTY of them today!
brb I'm gonna go sob now😭❤️
After more than 3 years, today is my last day at
@Applitools
. While I’m super sad to leave, I’ve received an opportunity of a lifetime to do something new outside of the Testing space.
I sincerely love Applitools, the people who've built it, and everything it stands for.
Every now and then I'll get a LinkedIn message from old coworkers who treated me like shit early in my career. It's always something along the lines of "wow you're famous now" or "how'd you become famous?"
I always leave them on read.
#TeamPetty
I quit a job that I otherwise loved bc they measured success by how many lines of code we wrote.
I explained to them that I'm smart enough to solve these problems with minimum code. They didn't seem to understand.
So, does everyone need to comply with the cops to avoid being murdered in the street or just the ones with a certain skin complexion? Asking for an entire race.
@tlakomy
Because backend is such a different space. You are in control. You tell the computer to do something, and it does it.
Frontend is a constant battle. It's like raising a teenager who is always talking back and doing whatever they wanna do.
@Arfmannn
sure, easy to think that by looking at this ONE encounter. except it happens to us on a daily basis.
similar condescension happened to me and 3 other women i know today alone.
this sort of dismissal is a huge part of the problem.
Today, I had the honor of keynoting the largest open source festival in Africa,
#oscafest23
!
The Nigerian Tech community is on 🔥🔥🔥 and I'm so happy you all saw fit to allow me to join this special event.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for the sincere love 🙏🏾❤️🙏🏾
As someone who mostly does backend, make no mistake, frontend humbles me.
Developing for multiple viewports, accessibility, AND making it aesthetically pleasing is not for the faint of heart.
Yesterday I had a 23 yr old python developer make fun of me for being a UI developer. "What do you do move boxes around." 😤
I have architected enterprise level systems kid, sit the f*ck down.
If you think frontend is easy, you're doing it wrong. Also you're probably a dick 🤷♀️
Unsolicited advice (take it or leave it)
Frontend devs, add a corporate-style project to your portfolio. The cat pic sites are cute and all but everyone has these and companies are really searching for someone who can make usable, accessible business sites
