Massive kudos to
@Dishoom
Manchester - I asked for a menu without calories but they didn’t have one so one of the staff (Georgia) took a menu and scribbled out all the calories for me 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
My class have got into the habit of calling out “connection!” every time they spot a link between our current book and another we’ve read before - so I decided to map them! Blank spaces left for new books to be added :) (this looked so much better in my head 🙄)
#readingrocks
I’m torn between:
1. I can’t read any more news, I’m literally dreaming about it, it’s overtaking everything I do & think about, I feel constantly uneasy
and
2. I need to keep up to date with EVERYTHING that’s happening, I can’t be the last to know, I need to stay informed
Some of my class have asked to stay in a few times to “tidy the bookshelves” - I’ve not really taken much notice until now. They’ve started a book of the week 🥺 and begun categorising by genre (including a shelf of their own recommendations) all of their own volition 😭
I just cannot concentrate after school now. As soon as the kids leave I have loads of work but can’t get in the right head space to do it. I plan one day at a time at the mo and am somehow finding it hard to motivate myself to care about chln understanding relative clauses 🙄🙄
I’ve used the NCETM PD materials all year with my class. I’ve made PPTs & accompanying worksheets for many of the Y4-6 units; I’d previously shared them on TES but have now uploaded them all to Google Drive. Will continue to update. Hope they’re useful!
Edu sector:
Find a work-life balance.
Don’t take work home.
Don’t work weekends.
Don’t work holidays.
Do EVERYTHING IN PPA.
Also edu sector:
You can’t pick up a scheme & just use it!
Have you read the latest research?
Look how amazing your lessons *could* be if you tried harder
When you’re reading a story to your class, does your mind ever wander whilst your mouth continues to read the words out loud? Then you refocus a page later and realise you’ve read aloud an entire page but have no memory of it? 😂
(For those of us still in school next week...!)
HOW TO MAKE EXPLODING BOOKS - A THREAD:
(I was inspired by
@MrBedfordsClass
’s beautiful exploding books (or “squash books”) & made them with my class today but couldn’t find a clear enough tutorial! Tried to make my own below...)
The other day, someone came in to my class to ask for “some strong Year 6 boys” to help her carry something. So obviously, I sent down some girls.
#internationalwomensday
Today a wasp came into the class AND ALL THE CHILDREN STAYED IN THEIR SEATS
Someone said “just stay calm and ignore it”
It flew in again AND THEY ALL STAYED CALM AND IGNORED IT
Am I living in a simulation?
I’m in awe of people planning schemes of work, doing online CPD etc, but with the lack of an “end goal” in sight I’m finding it v hard to motivate myself to do any work. I think if I knew when we were going back I could structure my time better. Atm it feels like an endless void
Here it is:
I am counting down to half-term.
Haters, come at me. This does not mean I am not positive about teaching/that I hate my job/that I’m spreading negativity.
I love my job.
It means I AM PERMANENTLY EXHAUSTED and could really do with a week’s worth of sleep.
Keeping schools open for children’s mental health sounds good until their bubble inevitably gets popped within the first few days and they have to unexpectedly isolate for 10 days, rather than being prepared to remote learn for 2 weeks and then go back to school. Which is better?

Hi Sophie, I’m glad to hear our Manchester team was able to help.
We will be having an option of a calorie free menu, if requested, very soon in all our cafés.
We’ve started to plot our curriculum on a world map (each colour is a different phase). It’s not finished yet & will definitely evolve, but it’s been eye-opening to see a) we cover a lot more than we thought b) we still have hugely neglected areas. Diversifying in progress!
We finally had our family Christmas today! We bought my mum every book from the last three
@TheBookerPrizes
long lists. I chose a 1* and 5* review for each book from
@amazon
and wrote them on the wrapping - she’s not allowed to open one until she chooses it to read 🤓📖
My dad has always taken pride in any job he does & I’ve always looked up to his work ethic. He’s been a truck driver for 40+ yrs & he just showed me he’s been ranked 1st amongst all the drivers in his company! I’m so proud but have nowhere to share my pride so putting it here 😂
Going right back to basics with my y5/6s after a thorough assessment of their writing last term. Loved the idea from
@hiasenglish
to represent sentences as diagrams so I’ve adapted this again from a few years ago to give a crack next week
I recently tweeted about the spelling results I was particularly proud of (avg SATs spelling score has gone from 11 to 16/20) & promised that
@ReBuckEdu
and I would blog about it - well here it is! It’s taken us quite literally 5 hrs so I hope it’s useful.
In KS2 we’re using
@padlet
this year to track reading at home. Each week we’ll post a Qu they have to answer. These pics show last week’s - this week the chn have to write about a new word they’ve learnt from their book. Hoping it’s more engaging/manageable than reading records!
It’s my and Kristian’s 12-year “anniversary” today. My next door neighbour is a head chef and he and his wife cooked us a 4-course meal, paired it with a wine and delivered it to our door!
My mock up for teaching relative clauses tomorrow. Current dilemma: 1) spend most of the lesson learning how to fold them correctly? or 2) spend my own time folding them now? (or 3... sack it off altogether 😂)
If teaching regularly involved having each child’s parent standing in the classroom watching, I wonder how many people would want to do the job? That’s sort of what it feels like now. We’re lucky to have a community of brilliantly supportive parents but it’s not always like that.
The absolute ✨professionalism✨ I feel swaggering around my classroom with one of these. Oh I want to change the slide but I’m parading the back of the room? Just let me *click*
Best gift to myself ever 😂 (yes I know I’m so behind the curve on this)
Got told my bump was “so small” for 5 months yesterday and now I’m wondering why it’s still apparently acceptable to comment on women’s bodies (to their faces!) whilst they’re pregnant
Kristian is away so I’ve finished decorating our bedroom as a surprise. I’ve never used a power drill IN MY LIFE but I was determined to prove I could do it on my own... curtain rail fitted, shelves and pictures! (Thanks dad for spending hours on FaceTime helping haha) 💪🏼
@ReadingExplorer
I’m sorry you felt you had to announce it this way (actually, I’m sorry it’s still a thing that has to be “announced” at all) but 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 bravo to you and I hope you don’t feel like it’s something you have to hide anymore 🥰🌈
A great idea from
@hiasenglish
- using diagrams to represent sentence structures. I’ve planned it into my current unit of writing based on The Mysteries of Harris Burdick which has worked well so far!
There’s nothing like the prospect of an imminent Ofsted to make you question everything about yourself as a teacher. Could it be this week, or 6 months from now? This sort of professional anxiety isn’t sustainable. It’s not even just me - seeing brilliant teachers 1/2
Here it is! A compilation of free (or very cheap) websites for primary trainees & NQTs to support planning in each curriculum subject. I've vetted each one myself to make sure they're actually useful! Thanks everyone for your ideas!

I’m often the only one in school after 5pm (I’m in a tiny school) apart from the caretaker. I mentioned how cold I was so he made me a cup of tea and found me a heater - I’m so spoiled 😂
I can’t deal with all the pictures of people’s smart watches on social media showing their step count or cals burned or whatever.
Have a pic of my biscuit tin. (Malted milks are elite, don’t @ me)
A while ago, I made an UKS2 maths knowledge organiser which was really useful for SATs revision (another resource that
@tes
have recently removed again!). I've uploaded it here with a quiz as well so you can work out which areas the chn need to revisit :)
Gave this to my class today with no explanation to see if they could match an emoji to a sentence. It only clicked for a few of them until I explained: an adult represents a main clause (can stand alone) and a child a subordinate clause (is dependent on the “adult”/main clause).
Left at lunch today for my PPA, but couldn’t go without acknowledging a fab piece of writing that I’d just marked. Bringing
#GoldenSentences
into the classroom!
#TeamEnglish
How on earth does one teach 13 subjects well? You focus on improving your teaching of maths, and just when you think it’s going okay you realise now you have to teach PE, RE, PSHE, computing, DT, French, music, science, English, art, history and geography well too.
I don’t understand it when people say “I have to lead a staff meeting on X this week. Anybody got any ideas on something useful I can share?”
Why do a meeting for the sake of a meeting? If there’s nothing valuable to share, why think something up just to fill an hour?
I’m a teacher & OH is an RAF pilot. We’ve recently done the weekly food shop (no “treats” + careful meal planning) & refilled the car yet, 6 days into June, are panicking about how we’ll make it to the end of the month. I know we’re luckier than most too. HOW are people coping?
I’ve seen some gorgeous book corners, incredibly tidy classrooms, creative displays & lovely ideas for the first days back.
I have nothing of the sort yet. Starting my 8th year still feeling incredibly anxious & inadequate. So for anyone else feeling the same - you’re not alone!
An ex-colleague introduced this game to our staff a few years ago - staff Cluedo! A fun light-hearted way to end the term for the adults? (It can span across a single day or a whole week!)
For anyone marking SATs papers this term (or for anyone who’s found out they’re in Year 6 next year) don’t forget to use these! I’ve made them for 2016-2019 papers and they’ll save you oodles of time.
So I’ve made a KS2 Maths Knowledge Organiser for my Y6s, yes for SATs, but def beyond too. It’s uploaded on TES if you’d like a copy, and if you’re at all interested, I just have a few notes about it in reply to this tweet (pre-empting any comments!)
I know there are obviously other factors at play but allow me to be childish for a moment about the fact that we’ve had windows open for months now (& been freezing our bums off) & yet still the majority of us (me, my TA & my class) have caught Covid. Great recommendation DfE 👏🏼
All these NQTs posting amazing teacher outfits has me so jealous. I gave up wearing makeup about 3 years in and my work clothes are nothing less than utterly uninspiring. I’m usually too tired to put any effort into how I look but these fashionistas are inspiring me 😂 1/2
Kristian& I have been together nearly 12yrs & have hardly any photos together bc we hate pics of ourselves. Our wedding photographer offers a free “engagement shoot” which we initially turned down. So glad she convinced us not to as she managed to capture a few non-awkward ones😫
Three things my HT has done recently for my well-being:
- allowed me to leave early one day to attend a family event
- reduced length of written reports
- sent a personalised thank you card this week
These small but achievable things go a long way in making staff feel valued!
I was fed up of printing off SATs marking schemes & having about 85 pages to flick through, so I’ve put all the answers for each paper on one page to make it easier. I’ve only done the 2018 maths papers so far, but if these are of use, I can do the others.
For any Y6 teachers being moderated, I hope this is the tiniest bit useful. I was moderated just before Covid and these are some confirmed examples of WTS, EXS and GDS pieces.

‼️🤰🏻PREGNANT TEACHERS:
I’m on my monthly tirade to make sure everyone knows about Shared Parental Leave, a way of getting you extra money that you’re entitled to (and no, it’s not affected by your partner!)

@TeachersSPL

Last year,
@MrBoothY6
created a wonderful resource by gathering authors’ responses to the question “Why should I read?” - I made them display-friendly and thought it might be useful to share again now as this seems to be prime display-making time!
So after 10 weeks of being on rota - and the longest time I’ve ever not taught since I qualified - I’m back in tomorrow full-time with my Kingdom of 8! It’s left me uneasy seeing everyone say it’s not safe to go back knowing that I’m going back tomorrow. But... we soldier on!
Bought this from Waterstones and it’s FULL of fantastic writing ideas (some not child-friendly, so needs filtering through). Going to try a couple each day as an optional morning activity!
Some of the things I see on Twitter make me physically sweat with anger & frustration. I’ve only been teaching 6 years but have never seen teacher bashing like it. I don’t think I’ve ever felt so furious & I have nowhere to vent my anger so have all these exclamations!!!!!!!!!!!!
Already got a fairly long list of kids who are self-isolating from tomorrow. At what point is it unfair to continue teaching the curriculum to those here as it will leave those absent with huge gaps? Where is the cut off point (% of absentees) to stop teaching new content?
V jealous of all the lovely work I keep seeing tweeted. In contrast I feel like I’m barely keeping my head above water at the moment! Haven’t had a full class for weeks on end, constantly chasing my tail & dreading the impending doom of SATs. I’ve never felt so unprepared for it.
It took me until my 8th year to finally overhear a child describe me how I always hope to be described: “fun but strict” 🤓
(I feel like a certain sector of Twitter will roll their eyes at the “fun” part, and another sector at the “strict” part 😂)
I think some people underestimate the impact the timing of SATs has on teaching maths for mastery in y6. Now that I’m not working to a deadline, I’m able to plan things out in much smaller steps and not worry about having to dwell on them if it’s not been secured by everyone. 1/2

ICYMI, I’ve put all the past SATs mark schemes onto 1 page each so when you’re marking you don’t have to flick between 38 pages. They’re now all done :)

Our Post-it summaries for Holes! Kids write them at the end of each reading session and we put one together as a class. Useful to practise summary skills as well as recapping previous content at the start of each session.
Can anyone who has a child who didn’t “sleep through the night” (I’m talking 7+ hrs) until older pls let yourself be known? My 18mo still wakes frequently & I KNOW it’s normal for some & I KNOW there’s nothing wrong but nobody (whose toddlers still wake) seems to talk about it 😵💫
My grandma (dad’s mum) passed away 2 weeks ago. My dad had given her this ring when he moved out (1983) and he’s now given it to me! Not usually my style but I’m a sucker for anything sentimental 😭
This is only my 8th year of teaching but it has, without doubt, been the most difficult term of my career yet. If my HT and colleagues weren’t so wonderful, I’m pretty sure I would’ve thrown the towel in.
Well this is bloody exciting! For any KS2 teacher who teaches English, go get a copy now. Example texts for each non-fiction genre from each year group, including annotated versions and example checklists. SO HANDY
@Grammarsaurus1
Punctuation game - by altering the punctuation, how many different meanings can the children make from the sentence? (Can anyone think of any more for this one I always use?)
