With me moving to DBB, one other change is in the wind — Second City Gridiron is staying with WCG, meaning I’m re-starting YouTube!
We’re still in the early goings, but a subscribe helps a *lot*. Gotta get to 1,000 for YT to acknowledge the channel lol.
What the
#Bears
did around Justin Fields was horrible. Hard to make life harder for him.
Year 1: Plan to sit him all year, but start him short-notice against the NFL’s best D in Week 3
Year 2: Make the team worse in every way
Year 3: “You have one year to prove yourself”
He’s…
Lovie Smith was a
#Bears
HC, through and through.
He said “If we beat the Packers twice and lose every other game, we had a successful season”
He went to a Super Bowl. He coached for Illinois. And on January 8th, 2023, he made the call to go for 2.
Here’s to you, Lovie —🐻⬇️
Matt Eberflus got everything he could’ve asked for today:
- FOUR turnovers on D
- Clean game from his offense
- 250+ combined yards from his QB
- Outstanding clock-killing drive late
And his decisions STILL resulted in a loss.
He’s not the guy. He simply cannot stay past 2023.
Lamar Jackson fell.
Patrick Mahomes fell.
Deshaun Watson fell.
Dak Prescott fell.
Aaron Rodgers fell.
Russell Wilson fell.
Justin Fields is apparently falling, but it’s hard to know if that means anything. I’d still take him in a heartbeat.
Ryan Poles has officially made one of the greatest trades in NFL History.
On a day when DJ Moore has 159 yards receiving and Tyrique Stevenson has an INT, the Chicago
#Bears
have locked up the
#1
overall pick via the Carolina Panthers.
A franchise-defining master stroke.
There's a part of Justin Fields' game we aren't talking about enough -- his dropback pace is bizarrely slow.
Ever wonder why it feels like the
#Bears
' OL is always giving up immediate pressure? This may be part of it. Both plays are shotgun 5-step drops.
Digging in more now.
After trading for DJ Moore and Chase Claypool, it's pretty embarrassing to see the
#Bears
act like their passing offense is entirely dependent on their rushing attack.
The Bears have schemed up more touches for TEs and FBs than the best unit on their offense. Pretty unreal.
The Cardinals, starting a QB they traded for weeks ago, are beating a good Cowboys team.
The Texans, with 4 OL backups & a rookie QB, beat the Jags.
The Bears, using the team they spent all offseason with, are getting annihilated.
Which coaching staff isn't like the others?
"The
#Bears
are the worst 3-0 team I've ever seen!"
"The Bears are the second-worst 4-1 team in history!"
"The Bears are 5-1 paper tigers!"
Keep talking. They'll keep winning.
The engine behind the
#Bears
turnaround has been Ryan Poles’ acquisitions:
- DJ Moore powers the offense
- Montez Sweat transformed the defense
- Darnell Wright, Tyrique Stevenson, & Gervon Dexter have made impacts all year
- A host of others
Chicago’s GM is the real deal.
Also, do I really have to remind the timeline that Justin Fields:
- Delivered the ball to ISM, who fumbled it (MIN)
- Delivered the ball to Pettis & Mooney, who dropped it (WAS)
- Delivered the ball to St Brown, who dropped it (MIA)
All in game-winning drives?
Take a breath.
Eddie Jackson getting caught on-mic saying “tackling isn’t important” was probably the worst thing that could’ve possibly happened to him. Have no idea why the Bears posted that lol.
This is why today was Chicago’s final exam — in a playoff atmosphere against, Chicago’s QB mustered up 9 points and <200 yards against a defense Bryce Young hung 30 on.
Also, a gaggle of rookie WRs ripped off 400+ yards against Eberflus’ defense.
Tell me again why any of this…
If not for 3 blown leads, we’re talking about a
#Bears
playoff team that nobody wants to play.
Would be a 9-6 team with a chance at 11 wins. Bummer. Feels like a missed opportunity.
#Bears
RT Darnell Wright had an unbelievably gritty game on Sunday & I'm not just saying that.
It's obvious on the tape that he can barely use his left arm -- his left shoulder must've hurt like hell.
Still, he played the full game one-handed & kept Crosby off Bagent. Badass.
#Bears
fans, this is sickening.
On the right: Rookie Fields on a 5-step drop from under center. Quick feet, drives the ball, first down. 1.835 second drop.
On the left: Year 3 Fields on a 7-step drop from under center. 2.5+ second drop.
Kyle Shanahan, an "offensive genius", has a 29-35 record and 3 seasons with 6 or less wins.
Matt Nagy, "a bum", has a 28-20 record with 2 playoff appearances despite fielding some of the worst QBs in the league.
Something tells me
#Bears
narratives are about to change.
If the
#Bears
get
#1
, they could have a chance to pull off a double-trade-back for QBs.
#1
->
#4
with Indy for Bryce Young
#4
->
#9
with Carolina for CJ Stroud
*insert evil laughter*
Justin Fields should get reps with the
#Bears
1st string WRs as soon as he can, and this play is a perfect example of why -- turn your 🔊on and I'll walk you through how Chris Lacy and Riley Ridley turned a normal redzone rep into Fields running for his life.
#Bears
Darnell Mooney had more receiving yards in his 2nd season than the following players did in theirs:
- Tyler Lockett
- Calvin Ridley
- Cooper Kupp
- Stefon Diggs
All while playing with 3 QBs in the Matt Nagy offense. Let's not underrate him going forward.
Imagine the GM needing to step in and say “hey, Montez Sweat shouldn’t sit during key moments”
Then stop imagining that, that apparently happened in Chicago. Ridiculous.
I don’t know why Justin Fields and Jordan Love are getting compared, but one had 15 months & 2 off-seasons to prep for their first start while the other got 2nd team reps in one training camp.
Might as well be apples and oranges imho.
#Bears
Ryan Poles stayed patient and landed two big OL adds in Alex Leatherwood and Kellen Diesch for free.
That’s a 2021 1st round pick & a 2022 player that was mocked as high as the 3rd round for the cost of a little cap space.
Really, really nice management 👌
Directly comparing the two
#Bears
' QBs dropback tempo is wild.
Tyson Bagent reaches the top of his drop about a half-second (0.5s) faster than Justin Fields on 5-step & 7-step dropbacks -- this gave Bagent more flexibility when dealing with pressure, and it may help explain why…
Justin Fields' Week 18 Time to Throw: 3.24 seconds
Jordan Love's Week 18 Time to Throw: 2.61 seconds
Would you like to guess which one threw for 300+ yards and which one took 5 sacks on ~25 dropbacks?
So, now that the season’s over, are we allowed to point out that Montez Sweat was absolutely the right Commander to trade for?
Chase Young is absurdly talented, but he’s having the same issues against the run in SF that we saw in WAS. Bears got a complete player, good move.
The
#1
overall pick traditionally goes to a terrible team — Young’s Panthers, Lawerence’s Jaguars, etc.
Caleb Williams walks into:
- Two
#1
WRs (Allen, Moore)
- A Top 10 TE (Kmet)
- A solid OL w/ IOL upgrades
- A ready-made defense
- An extra 1st round pick
This is an EXCITING…
#Bears
about to enter 2023 with:
- 100mil+ in cap room
- A top 5 pick
- A secondary full of young studs (key in a passing league!)
- All dead cap cleared
IF communication between Fields & the org is healthy… this could work. But it’ll take ~310 days of patience
I thought Fields was fine today, but it’s a damn shame seeing this Bears unit score 10 points in a loss where their only TD drive came on an Eddie Jackson INT to the 1-yard-line.
Getsy has to be held accountable for turtling as early as the mid-3rd. Gross performance.
#Bears
Eddie Jackson had a cool "teammate moment" on Robert Quinn's record-breaking sack -- he had a free path to Mike Glennon off a blitz but held up once he saw Quinn flying around the edge.
Super cool to see!
The bad news: That has to be one of the single worst plays I’ve ever seen by a
#Bears
WR.
The good news: All we ever said was that we wanted to see Justin Fields let his supporting cast show that they’re the problem… well, here we go 😂
This is a straight up superhero run from
#Bears
David Montgomery.
Give me all the crow, he was outrageously good at the second level on Sunday. Utterly heroic performance, nigh untacklable.
What a phenomenal way to get extension talks brewing.
Jesper Horsted: “That’s just the power of Justin Fields”
David Montgomery: “Fields has a natural aura”
Bill Lazor: “[Fields] looked like he could be successful. Nothing was too big for him”
Seems like the
#Bears
roster and staff want to see Fields, how long will Nagy hold out?
I hate saying this, but if Chris Ballard isn’t careful he could wind up in a situation where:
- The
#Bears
trade with the
#Texans
- The Bears THEN trade with
#Panthers
- The
#Cardinals
trade with
#Falcons
- The
#Colts
get stuck with QB4
Never taking a risk has it’s consequences
Honest take: Justin Fields looks improved, but there are folks wanting him to look like 2020 Josh Allen or 2015 Russ Wilson and I think he needs another year before *that* happens. That’s okay!
2023 is *probably* a year of dynamic running and “serviceable+” throwing that sets up…
DK Metcalf to Chicago for their 2023 1st round pick.
#Seahawks
get: Potential Top-10, likely Top-16 1st round pick. Don’t have to pay DK’s extension.
#Bears
get: WR1 that pairs beautifully with Fields without giving up more than 1 draft pick.
Who says no?
This is why Bears fans over 60 look young Bears fans in the eye and say "Same Old Bears".
Meanwhile, Sean McVay is up on a good Seattle team by 2 scores with a team full of rookies. Coaching might matter!
Matt Eberflus’ transformation into Cover 2 Mike Zimmer has been an awesome thing to watch.
The
#Bears
went from one of the most static defenses in football to an unpredictable front 7 that *might* blitz you from anywhere. That, plus Sweat, has made all the difference.
Give the…
I grew up legitimately believing that “the offense doesn’t need to score, the defense or Hester will do it for us”.
No other player has ever come close to that level of consistent danger at the position. It’s just KR/PR, but he made that a weapon.
Using only the
#1
pick, the
#Bears
have completely overhauled their passing offense:
- A WR1 (DJ Moore)
- The best pass protector in the draft (Darnell Wright)
-
#61
(IOL help?)
- More to come
If it wasn't clear the Bears were committed to Justin Fields, it certainly is now.
It’s hard to overstate *how* well Darnell Wright has played compared to a standard rookie OT.
Remember Braxton’s early games last year? That’s normal. Nearly unplayable on passing downs, especially without help.
Wright gets no schematic help but provides his QB that critical…
If the Lions close this, there’s no defending this loss.
Gutless coaching allowed Detroit to stay within 12, gutless playcalling gave them the ball back up 6, and soft defensive zones got Goff back on track when nothing had gone well for him all day.
Eberflus has to own this.
Honest review of Justin Fields'
#Bears
-
#Broncos
game:
Fields looked like a dynamo early, doing nearly everything Bears fans have begged him to all year -- he hit throws over the middle, he hit long balls down the sideline, and he did it all on-time & within the structure of the…
Fields looked way more comfortable tonight at all levels — the ball came out on time, he avoided negative plays, he RIPPED those zone hitches, and he gave his WRs chances to make big catches all night long. Moore delivered.
That’s 2 weeks in a row now. What’s next?
Matt Eberflus' "200 Club" confirms what we already knew -- Chicago gave Justin Fields the wrong coach.
The Bears gave a raw passer that had trouble trusting his eyes an HC that preached never throwing picks, never taking sacks, and aiming for just TWO touchdowns per game.
#Bears
GM Ryan Poles needed to add talent to the offense in the 2023 off-season. Thus, he added:
1. DJ Moore (a 1,000 yard WR already)
2. Darnell Wright (Instant impact RT)
3. Nate Davis (Stabilizer at RG)
4. Roschon Johnson (starting RB?)
So far, that’s a hell of a group.
Like it or not, the
#Bears
had a pretty major punting problem last year.
In Net Yards per Punt, Gill ranked 37th out of 37 qualifying punters.
But as a directional punter, he also ranked 30th out of 33 punters in % of punts downed inside the 20.
I get that drafting a Punter…
If the
#Bears
manage to lose a game where Justin Fields looks like he's obviously not the problem I'd call that pretty embarrassing.
All we get is the broadcast angle so I have no idea what's going on downfield, but the ball is coming out & the throws look accurate 🤷♂️
If somehow the
#Bears
end up turning the
#1
pick into:
- 2023: 61
- 2024: CAR 1st
- 2025: CAR 2nd
- DJ Moore
- The player everyone said they should draft at
#1
(Jalen Carter)
I’ll be beyond impressed with how Ryan Poles played his cards.
Goofy formations.
Pre-snap penalties.
Terrible timeouts.
Simple mistakes.
Matt Nagy's
#Bears
have dealt with these demons for the last three brutal years, and I only have two words to say about that: I'm out.
Irony is the
#Bears
fanbase at-large begging for Justin Fields to throw with anticipation and now jumping down his throat for an anticipation throw that goes south.
ESB came out of his route flat and didn’t find the ball — he’s gotta meet that ball at the spot. Fine from the QB
The Bears have a coach that's given up blitzing again and got comfortable in soft zones.
The Packers have a coach that's empowered young WRs and exploits any weakness you give him.
This is the Bears-Packers future that George McCaskey is okay with if he sticks with Flus.
LMAO
“Don’t go thinking Justin Fields getting DJ Moore is the same as Josh Allen getting Stefon Diggs”
A 62-yard TD off a screen might just suggest otherwise. That’s the easiest TD pass Fields has thrown in his life.
Highlight reels are great, but how well does Caleb Williams play within structure?
Here's an 18-play reel that'll give you a feel for Caleb Williams within the pocket -- you'll see quick throws, deep shots, progression reads, and plenty of talent. All from the big bad ND game.
I absolutely *hate* Ryan Pace’s style of resource management, but with Thomas Graham Jr’s emergence his 2021 draft is going OFF right now.
- Franchise QB
- Starting-level LT, RT, RB, (N)CB
- Rotational NT
All in one draft. That’s insane.
Maybe taking a QB that thrives when pushing the ball downfield and pairing him with an old-school HC that wants his QB to avoid turnovers was a mistake all along 🤷♂️
The whole league: These young offensive minds are challenging the way we think & changing football -- it's risky, but let's follow their lead. We can't fall behind.
The Bears: Let's hire a Rod Marinelli guy that runs a scheme from 2006. We were good then! This is great!
“It can’t get any worse than Jerry Angelo and Lovie Smith”
“It can’t get any worse than Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy”
“It can’t get any worse than Marc Trestman” <— We are ALMOST here
Did we ever see Bears’ players talk about Trubisky’s play like they’re talking about Fields’ passes?
Not looking to dredge up Trubisky animosity, but all I remember hearing was about Mitch’s leadership, work ethic, attitude. With Fields, it’s already about his play.
I love it
Nobody’s going to talk about it but Eddie Jackson is having the league’s quietest DPOY season this year.
Not only does he already have 3 INTs, but he’s currently 2nd on the
#Bears
in both solo & total tackles as a DEEP SAFETY.
He’s the duct tape holding this defense together 🔥
It’s over, we’re done.
Fields is a Steeler. There will be a new QB in Chicago, and by all accounts he’ll be Caleb Williams.
Williams will immediately walk into one of the best supporting casts that a
#1
pick has had in years. It’s an EXCITING time to be a
#Bears
fan, if…
To me, there'd be nothing more "Chicago Bears" than trading down from
#1
, building a Super Team, and ending up with a QB that isn't good enough to lead the team anywhere meaningful.
Forgive me, but I'd love to see a new approach. It may not end as well as 2006 or 2018 (great…
Question: Do we think Chase Claypool and Eddie Jackson are THIS excited about Nate Davis, Tremaine Edmunds, and TJ Edwards?
It’s certainly not impossible, but it makes you wonder if some other
#Bears
move is coming 👀
Facing a key 2nd & 11,
#Bears
QB Nick Foles identified man coverage and yelled "Rub! Rub!" to Allen Robinson, scheming David Montgomery wide open against a blitz.
This perfect call (and throw) basically won the Bears the game. HUGE play.
The amount of
#Bears
fans that hate Matt Nagy for what he's done with a bad
#2
OVR pick (pile up 23 ugly wins) is outstanding to me. We realize the
#Bucs
are a very, very good team with a VERY good defense, yes?
We scored 20 points and won from being down 13-0. That's toughness.
Justin Fields was an awesome Bear. I’ve met so many fans that LOVE him, he’ll be remembered fondly. Today is not a fun day.
But in the wake of this move, I want to say this: despite this move being written on the wall since January, some creators chose Narratives over Knowledge…
What’s the biggest difference between
#Rams
Jared Goff and
#Bears
Mitch Trubisky? One has grown through his weaknesses while the other simply hasn't.
This isn't a thread about Goff.
This isn't about comparison.
This is a thread about
@Mtrubisky10
's growth. And it's real.
Things I want: the
#Bears
to add at WR
Things I do NOT want: the
#Bears
to go all-in on DaVante Adams.
With the Bears’ defense and offense changing identities, I’d rather see the Bears spend FA money on value-priced hole-pluggers. CB, SAF, MLB, DE, DT, C, RG… spend wisely 🙏
Jack Sanborn isn’t better than Roquan Smith, but he’s:
- ~50x cheaper
- Very good in run support
- A surprisingly good pass rusher(!)
And this is just his rookie year! Excited to continue watching him grow 👌
“I actually think the Bears should take Jayden Daniels at
#1
… because I want to see Caleb Williams play with Kliff Kingsbury”.
You and every other Washington fan, Cynthia. But that’s not how the draft works!
I think Foles' sideline spat with Matt Nagy is getting taken out of context -- when a QB knows his offense well, he usually becomes a de facto OC and "shares" play-calling duties.
The fact that they're are already having these conversations is a great sign for the
#Bears
offense
#DaBears
Roquan Smith is playing at an unreal, potentially All-Pro level and in this breakdown I talk through how and why.
Turn your 🔊 on and I'll walk you through an early play from the
#Panthers
game that makes one thing perfectly clear: He's not just any linebacker.
I love DJ Moore, you love DJ Moore!
I love Empty Sets, you probably do too!
But sometimes in the NFL, things don't work out even when you get a look you like -- that's exactly what happened on this
#Bears
3rd & 10.
Turn your 🔊 on for a breakdown on how Fields chose…
#Bears
Justin Fields is spinning out of so many clear sacks this season that fans are starting to take these plays for granted. These are WILD displays of athleticism.
Fields converts a 1st down here, but similar free rushers result in 10+ yard sacks for other QBs🤷♂️
Allen Robinson converted more
#Bears
1st downs (68) than Darnell Mooney had receptions (61) in 2020.
He also generated more 1st downs than all other Bears' WRs combined (63) with less targets (151 vs 196).
Robinson produced despite defensive attention. That's irreplaceable.
The Chicago
#Bears
currently hold Dead Cap money from Danny Trevathan, Mario Edwards, and Robert Quinn's deals, just in case you were wondering.
Ryan Poles has been fixing Chicago's cap situation for the last 2 years -- this offseason, he'll put it to use. Excited to see it.
Fields was the best version of himself today, and he went for the jugular when the team needed him. He did PLENTY.
Not his decision to kick on both 4th & 1s, not his decision not to go for 2 up 6. That’s the Head Coach.
Shane Waldron feels like confirmation that Matt Eberflus is more secure in Chicago than some have implied.
Waldron clearly doesn’t see a “lame duck” HC — he had plenty of options, but chose Chicago early in the process.
Chicago’s building something they intend to make last.
