On the politics of sports; inspired by Eric Hobsbawm: "The imagined community of millions seems more real as a team of 11 named people." By Sean Jacobs.
I wish Gabriel Garcia Marquez was alive today for Colombia's first Leftist President and its first Afro-Colombian Vice President. Remember when he said in 1982 at his Nobel Prize lecture, "In spite of this, to oppression, plundering and abandonment, we respond with life."
South Africa’s first veterinarian was black – and he earned his qualification in 1886 (!). Dude came home, killed it. After his death, his memory and contributions to veterinary research were deliberately hidden from public view until after apartheid ended
When Robin DiAngelo of 'white fragility' inadvertently slips out a truth to the

So after all that she has done to prevent quality education for the majority of school children in the Western Cape, Debbie Schafer is emigrating to the UK ...
This part of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's 1982

speech feels especially appropriate today given that is in his own country that we witness history today.
RIP to Sugarman, Sixto Rodriguez, son of Mexican American immigrants to Detroit, who, ironically, became the soundtrack to disaffected white conscripts of apartheid South Africa's army. (Footnote: Swedish filmmaker who told Sixto's story threw himself in front of a subway train)
FIFA knows that if it bans Russia outright (which it should), its hypocrisy would be exposed: Will it then ban Saudi Arabia (for invading Yemen), India (for occupying Kashmir), Israel (Palestinian land), and Morocco (Western Sahara) from international competition?
I don't know why Adam Habib (now SOAS director; ex Wits University vice chancellor) thought it was okay for him as a South African of Indian origin to say the N word. Or why he felt the need to do so.
Apart from the laziness of
@news24
(copy and pasting DA press releases), the DA has never achieved more than 20% of the vote (give or take) in national elections in South Africa. So this reads like propaganda and makes you wonder about News24.
Desiree Ellis (born Salt River, Cape Town), one time

Saying it louder for those in the back: Israel is a member of

... it would also help if election day was declared a public holiday as is the case in most functioning democracies, including in the so called developing world.
My dad Appollis Jacobs turned 78 years old today. In this picture I am about 5 or 6 years old. We're in the garden of Judge HEP Watermeyer in Bishopscourt, Cape Town. My dad was his gardener.
For the clever ones who say Apartheid didn't end in South Africa (re Palestine). I lived through Apartheid (my childhood and youth) and so did my parents (and I know their story). You're welcome to go back there. I don't. If you don't see any difference between then and now, I do
When Egypt's goalkeeper Abou Gabal went off with an injury, the live camera cut to young men in red with "Justice Pour Bennani" t-shirts. It's a campaign for a young Moroccan who disappeared 15 years ago. It is the only sign of protest at an Afcon 2021 (2022) game I've seen.
RIP to the great Cecyl Esau (1955-2021), member of 1980s radical left class of activists from the Western Cape's coloured townships (Cecyl came from Worcester, outside Cape Town). He was imprisoned on Robben Island (1987-1991) for his guerrilla activities
Burn. CNN anchor, Brianna Keilar, on Piers Morgan criticizing Simone Biles: "His only athletic claim to fame is when he ran off the set of his former TV show."
This

headline ("White South African farmers are thriving in Mississippi") is stinging: How easily white South Africans, whether immigrants or on work visas, fit into existing racially hierarchies to the detriment of local black workers.

This is unfortunate. Bobi Wine had a zoom meeting of sorts with Juan Guaidó, then called Guaido "President" of Venezuela. Who is advising Wine? That said, Wine has suffered for his bravery, but he may be politically naive or this just exposes his actual politics.

Demented and offensive. How is this some kind of achievement?
Helen Zille, chairperson of the DA Federal Council, to Radio 702: "To be poor in Langa in Cape Town is a hundred, probably a thousand times better than to be poor in many of the townships in the rest of the country."
Random childhood memory: When I was 12, Neville Alexander used to deliver "Upbeat" magazine to my primary school in Lotus River, Cape Town. Later my teacher, Evelyn Mehl, slipped out that Alexander spent 10 years in Robben Island prison with Mandela, Sisulu & Kathrada.

I don't think anyone who embraces a democratic South Africa based on equality and dignity would have doubted that the old flag represents a hurtful yearning for the racist past. But good that the SCA has now spelled it out for those like
@afriforum
who pretend not to know this.
David Samaai from Paarl in the Western Cape was the first black (and coloured) South African to play at Wimbledon in 1949 when he was 21 years old. He was probably the first black player globally ever to do so; before Althea Gibson and Arthur Ashe.
Demanding South Africa's government arrest Vladimir Putin for war crimes makes no sense. The people who write these silly pieces know South Africa doesn't have that pull, but they can’t seem to resist the opportunity for moralistic posturing.
In the early 1990s, I took this photo of Oom Piekie, my maternal grandmother's brother, who was a farm worker in Kruis River in the small Karoo. (My late mother grew up there as a farm worker too before she migrated to do domestic work in Cape Town)

The

letter in support of John Comaroff was signed mostly by senior South African academics based at South African universities. How's the reaction been to them signing it and any fallout for them, especially in a country with such high levels of gender violence?
As usual with elections in Brazil, people wonder who Brazil's men's national football team members vote for. Most support Bolsonaro apparently. A video is circulating of Neymar singing along to a song calling for a second term for Bolsonaro. Word is only Richarlison is pro-Lula.
Dumpster fire of antisemitism: The EFF's Julius Malema told those listening at an election rally (South Africa holds elections for local councils on November 1) that he vaccinated because he saw Jews doing it and he was convinced because Jews don't “play with their lives.”
Despite evidence that a wide representation of fans at the World Cup - Japanese, South American, European, African and Arab - show public support for Palestine and when interviewed by Israeli reporters make that case, the

This is an excellent analysis of the looting in parts of two of South Africa's provinces over the last day. Worth a read. Not sure if it is set as public.
On the way to my local barbershop in my part of Brooklyn I ran into

— a South African icon living. I may have embarrassed her with all the praise.
This always amazes me: The story of the coloured South African who jump ship in pre-revolutionary Cuba, joins Castro's revolution then the Cuban army and fights in defeating apartheid South Africa's army in Angola. There's a film about it. "Brothers in Arms" by Jack Lewis, 2007.

Until last week former NBA player Kwame Brown's Youtube channel was about his support for Donald Trump, police and saying Black Lives Matter uses the "race card." Now he is some everyman (he's quite the misogynist) taking on the Man. US public debate sucks
Olympic cyclist Chris Froome's wife, actress Michelle (Muslims are a 'drain on society' and there are 'no innocent Gazans'), is a white South African. That's all.

The undocumented construction workers preparing the sites for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. 80% of the workers on the Olympic building sites are immigrants. "All these beautiful stadiums are built by poor people who are exploited," said a Malian worker.
Speaking for a friend: People realize Thabo Bester, the South African murderer who exploited the affinity for grifters among the country's new elites, broke out of a private prison, right? Repeat it: a private prison.
Reactions to Gurnah’s Nobel win, mostly social media, play up his Africanness & Blackness. That's fine, but Gurnah is from Zanzibar, an island nation (think Indian Ocean, Arab and African mix) & Tanzanians and Zanzibaris contest him. And his work is all about rejecting categories
One of my favorites. I remember taking this picture of my parents in Ottery township in late 1996. I had a new camera I bought in Chicago, where I had gone to study, and just came back to Cape Town. Most images of my family are formal. So I am happy at this exception.
These views are more widespread among white South Africans than we think. The DA, a party with the majority of support among white South Africans, copy MAGA politics (add anti-vax politics), so do Afriforum and Freedom Front Plus and media like Rapport.
Woman at Trump rally says she is a ‘South African MAGA Preacher.’ She says God sent Trump to her in a dream and told her to come to America to help him because Heaven is backing him and he is a modern-day Cyrus sent by God to save the world.
