When Egypt's goalkeeper Abou Gabal went off with an injury, the live camera cut to young men in red with "Justice Pour Bennani" t-shirts. It's a campaign for a young Moroccan who disappeared 15 years ago. It is the only sign of protest at an Afcon 2021 (2022) game I've seen.

Random childhood memory: When I was 12, Neville Alexander used to deliver "Upbeat" magazine to my primary school in Lotus River, Cape Town. Later my teacher, Evelyn Mehl, slipped out that Alexander spent 10 years in Robben Island prison with Mandela, Sisulu & Kathrada. #Matla .

David Samaai from Paarl in the Western Cape was the first black (and coloured) South African to play at Wimbledon in 1949 when he was 21 years old. He was probably the first black player globally ever to do so; before Althea Gibson and Arthur Ashe.

These views are more widespread among white South Africans than we think. The DA, a party with the majority of support among white South Africans, copy MAGA politics (add anti-vax politics), so do Afriforum and Freedom Front Plus and media like Rapport.

I can't believe how Thabo Mbeki is now some kind of truth teller, given that he spearheaded the policies that deepened class inequalities inherited from apartheid (racially as well as in and amongst black people) and proposed black capitalism as solution
