So grateful to wake up to this wonderful review of Eyeliner: A Cultural History🧿 "Each chapter is more interesting than the last. Hankir doesn’t take her subject too seriously; her history lessons are peppered with cultural references and good humor."

Today is Loujain al-Hathloul’s 31st birthday. She is spending it in prison in #SaudiArabia for the ‘crime’ of advocating for gender equality. The family of the women’s rights activist hasn’t heard from her in over six weeks. #FreeLoujain #FreeLoujainHathloul #LoujainAlHathloul

Today I think of my grandparents who were exiled from Palestine to Sidon in 1948. They lost everything & lived in poverty. Only recently did I learn that as a child, dad regularly ate mouldy bread. He still recalls the hunger. It took him decades to speak of this trauma #Nakba74

Without electricity in #Lebanon elevators aren't functioning. baba speaks of having to skip home visits to patients because he's too old to climb flights of stairs. he's reminded not only of the disintegration of the state but also of his limitations as he ages. how fucking cruel

Samo, 22, says he feels nothing. The #BeirutBlast left his mum in a coma; she may never wake up. His 14-yr-old sister was injured & their home was wrecked. He doesn't have a job. And he recently lost his father. But he insists he feels nothing. His story:

Life in #Lebanon : Small victory for mama today, she sent this pic of a makeshift power source which is enough for a fan, the tv, and internet router. Baba slept for the first night in days. They were on a waiting list for this UPS for weeks. And they are among the privileged 💔🇱🇧

Ridiculously thrilled to see this @nytimes review of #OurWomenOnTheGround . The volume "rewrites the hoary rules of the foreign correspondent playbook, deactivating the old clichés. Each of these women has a story to tell. Each has seen plenty"

What does one say to elderly parents in #Lebanon who haven’t slept in days due to the heat & lack of electricity/AC/fans? Who haven’t driven to work/been out because of depleting fuel/worry over violence at gas stations? Who have been carefully calculating what to eat & when?

for the 1st time today I could only video call mum for 2 mins bc there was no electricity & she's running out of internet credit & has to carefully use it. i could barely get a word in due to connectivity. she's on the verge of tears. I hate that there's nothing I can do #lebanon

This week two UK doctors—both of immigrant backgrounds—lost their lives to #Covid19 : Dr Habib Zaidi, 76, a Pakistani-British GP & Dr Adil El Tayar, 63, a Sudanese surgeon. Both reportedly died on Wednesday. They devoted their lives to helping others. RIP

“You’re giving us arms & we’re saying we don’t want to go to war, we want to eat & get an education. I speak to you from the city of Tripoli with the men here, in 10 years we’ll get an education (by force) & we’ll throw you (the politicians out) & we’ll become the MPs ourselves”

One of mama’s best friends is her neighbour on the 2nd floor. They usually have sob7iyes (morning gatherings).Since the outbreak they’ve been catching up via balconies instead, speaking while many meters apart. The neighbour sent us this pic💕I so wish I could be in Lebanon today

Oh Jerusalem, my love! Tomorrow orange trees will blossom & olive trees will rejoice Your eyes will dance, the migrant pigeons will return to your sacred roofs Your children will play again Fathers & sons will meet on rosy hills. My town, town of peace & olives- Nizar Qabbani
