Certain bodies must not repeat themselves in the dawn. Men do not fight for tons of steel. This, sir, is my resignation. The desperate die expensively today.
Famously, the scientist who came up with the concept of the “alpha male” in wolves later realized that these dynamics only emerge in captivity, when different males are thrown together randomly. In the wild, wolves have strong familial bonds and don’t compete that way.
To his immense credit, he dedicated a large portion of his life to militating against his own work. There are stories of him trying to pull his own books from shelves. He was very aware of the ways his work had been misinterpreted and did his level best to stop it.

Well, sure, but the other takeaway is that these kinds of behaviors can be influenced by environment and community. There’s nothing inevitable about “alpha” behavior, it can be modulated by community and resources
This is what a good therapist looks like. They acknowledge your symptoms and *adapt to them.* It’s not about making you “normal” it’s about making you *functional.* That looks different for different people
Hundreds of baby boomers are taking classes at the University of Minnesota as part of its Senior Citizen Education Program — and all for just $10 per credit.

The point is that the research had significant methodological caveats and it’s silly to imagine that it applies to all wolves, let alone members of a different and more intelligent species

God this is so weird. Why are people taking sides in a deal between two corporations as though it’s a particularly bitter breakup? I am profoundly unsettled by this.
Of course “Marx and Lenin” didn’t save the Vietnamese people, they did that themselves. But Marxism-Leninism is not reducible to Marx and Lenin. It is a method, a philosophy of practice, that the Vietnamese took up.
In an attempt avoid their tents from being seized, students put their tents on chairs as to “comply” with administration. When police and UNC facility crew came to forcibly remove the tents, protestors collectively lifted up their tents and marched around the quad.
Bill Gates could be the best, most altruistic person in the world (and he sure isn’t!) and it still wouldn’t matter. The problem is that he got his wealth through brutal exploitation and now he essentially directs global health policy with zero oversight. Who elected him?
I shouldn’t be surprised by stuff like this anymore but it’s revealing that an official pig twitter account can call a crowd of poor racialized people useless and get away with it
I haven’t met nearly as many Marxists at school as Ben Shapiro would have me believe. But one of my professors is a communist from the former USSR and takes absolutely no bullshit about it. Her lectures are works of art
I love these articles that are like “this unambiguously good person was a communist and that’s bad” because the writers have to do all sorts of mental gymnastics to avoid connecting those things
Horrifying. Anti-homeless group joining w/white supremacists Soldiers of Odin against homeless tent city. Tent city has daily vigilantism against them - stones, bottles, paintball guns directed at mostly

Just overheard a professor describe China as “politically communist but free market,” which is more evidence that if you’re an academic you can just make shit up.
My favorite thing on here is when communists write long threads about how it’s actually revolutionary to have whatever hobby they have. Anyway, here’s why Marx would approve of me spending all my money on tiny finger skateboards
I know it’s twitter so the instinct is to dunk on this, but I assure you Bloomberg Opinion knows what capitalism is and how it works. They’re not stupid, they’re lying to you.

One of the points she makes fairly often is that, whatever mistakes you think the soviets made, we can historicize them and envision alternatives. But capitalism is structurally exploitative. There’s no possible world in which a generally benevolent capitalism can exist.
Heard a story about a local soviet that took up legal cases a month after the revolution. There was a pile of cases concerning peasants who had stolen wood from their landlord’s forest. The lawyer’s solution was to “pick up that file and shove it in the stove.”
Why not reparations for the millions of human beings killed by wars waged overtly and covertly by the US government in Vietnam, Laos, Iraq, Afghanistan, Cambodia, Nicaragua, Panama, and so on?
Self-care has absolutely shifted from a notion of creating collective healing spaces outside the purview of capital and towards an idea of selfishness as a radical value.
Stalin made mistakes but that’s not a useful statement independent of the material conditions in which he operated. What was the international situation like? How organized were internal enemies? How developed were the productive forces? These are much more important questions.
🔒: the beatles are known for brilliant lyrics like "this ever changing world in which we live in" and masterful rhymes like "minds that hate / have to wait", all inspired by hating chinese communists, a courageous stance that no one expected from rich english guys in the sixties

The situation in Venezuela really shows that American liberalism ends at the border. The coup forces are basically alt-right, and yet liberals can’t bring themselves to denounce them
Self-crit: I bought into the “critique” of MFF because I think transparency is generally good and I didn’t know it was a well-poisoning tactic from fascists. Having read more, it actually makes total sense that a volunteer bail fund would be slow in dispersing millions of dollars
