Even Max is living with a serious physical impairment. So often in genre stories like this, the idea of the disabled is completely ignored or worse, treated as a burden & liability. Mad Max is one of the very few that think to address it head on & show people living & coping.

Complaining that John Wick has made current day action worse is a bizarre take by itself but then to hold up “Die Hard” as your shining example of how it should be is, frankly, moronic. “Die Hard” led to a trend that produced copycats of varying quality for literal decades 1/

DIE HARD has zero one-takes, never dangled Bruce Willis off of a real skyscraper and spends far more time on character work than hand-to-hand combat/shootouts and it’s handily more engaging, thrilling and ultimately satisfying than any action flick from the past 10 years.

So, I watched “Renfield” and it’s not great except for Nicolas Cage (the movie should have focused on him) but… why is this more of a “Mortal Kombat” film than the *actual* “Mortal Kombat” film from 2021? I’m serious. The way it depicts violence has a very specific aesthetic.

With Michele Yeoh arguably being more popular than she has ever been previously, it’s surprising that one of her best films, “Wing Chun,” hasn’t been given new life on Blu-ray. It’s directed by Yuen Woo-ping (“The Matrix”) & also stars HK action legends Donnie Yen & Cheng Pei-pei

Good news to end the week on— another classic HK film has become easier to see. The delightful Yuen Woo-ping period kung Fu action/comedy “Wing Chun” starring Michelle Yeoh and Donnie Yen is now available to stream on Amazon Prime (in the US at least).

Let’s talk about “Hong Kong Rescue” & the guy who runs it- Jacob Rodefeld. HK film fandom is hard because so many titles are just not available or only available in extremely poor editions. This gave rise to a culture of bootlegging w/in the community. It’s unfortunate (1/)

🧵“Rebel Moon: Part 1” is, almost hilariously, “Star Wars” w/the serial numbers haphazardly filed off. To make up for this glaringly obvious swipe, it interestingly has rigorously been filtered through the European grim-dark sci-Fi influence of “Heavy Metal” & Warhammer 40K. (1/)

Today I learned that Billy Blanks’ unhinged mega-performance in the HK/US co-production “The King of the Kickboxers” was a direct influence on the Streetfighter video game character “Dee Jay.” I can’t believe I never noticed the similarities before.
