Huh. I guess I should be insulted when
@RobertIger
says Disney has never been good at video games, but I’ll just take the high road and stand proud with the Epic Mickey team and laud them for the great work they - we - did for Disney.
Anyone ever stop to think about the 6502 chip that kickstarted the personal computer age? Well, turns out there was one guy who invented it - Chuck Peddle. He died this week and deserves a moment of silence for, oh, you know CHANGING THE WORLD FOREVER...
On Facebook there's a discussion about which Deus Ex 1 (2000) ending was "best." That made me happy: People arguing about which endgame was "right" was part of the plan, better than just killing a boss monster, right? For me, they were all "right, but which was your favorite?
To all the folks no longer at Telltale Games, a reminder: You did great work. You told great stories. You were part of something special. The business of games is broken, but you will survive to spread the gospel of interactive storytelling wherever you go.
I just got around to reading “Blood, Sweat and Pixels” by
@jasonschreier
. If you want to know what game development is really like, go read it. I found it hugely validating - I thought it was just me!
Well this seems unlikely. An updated version of Epic Mickey for current-gen gaming platforms? I mean, I'm totally ready for it and it's not like Disney tells me anything these days, but I just don't see it happening. Hope I'm wrong and this is for real.
Wonderful article about Choose Your Own Adventure books and their surprising sophistication. (Actually, any article about Choose Your Own Adventure books is welcome.)
I love the Disney Family Museum. I got to lecture there about the making of Epic Mickey and even got to show the game to Disney’s daughter, Diane Disney Miller. Her reaction was “Dad would have loved this.” I about fell on the floor! Best compliment anyone could have paid me.
On this day in 2004, Electronic Arts officially closed ORIGIN Systems, Inc, the video game publishing and developing company founded in 1983 by

Watched Black Mirror: Bandersnatch last night. Not good. Game developers have been doing similar things far better for forty years. The developers made every amateur mistake they could have made. It's like they were trying to fail. Interactive nail meet interactive coffin.
For some reason the release of the
#systemshock3
trailer on IGN () has people commenting on Deus Ex. For the record I'd love to make another
#deusex
game but don't hold your breath. Odds are slim to none. You'll just have to settle for System Shock 3. 😉
Interesting idea - the experience that spins on forever. But why is the games industry afraid of finite experiences? What's wrong with a game that actually comes to an end, tells a contained story, freeing players to go play another game?
Man, it's been tough not saying or showing anything. Still not going to say much - gotta keep SOME secrets! But here's a peek at where we are gameplay-wise. Hope you enjoy it!
It is so true that ideas are easy and execution is hard. You have no idea how many times people have said to me, “I have a great game idea. I’ll give it you. You make the game. We’ll split the profits 50/50.” That ain’t the way it works, folks.
Meeting Stan Lee was one of the highlights of my life. And he’s signing a Fantastic Four book I wrote when I was at TSR, making the occasion doubly special. Needless to say he’ll be missed.
@tha_rami
The games industry has never had much interest in its own history. We’re all going to regret it someday if we don’t start honoring and preserving our past.
@therealcliffyb
I, too, miss the days when people would play a standalone game, finish it (or not) and move on to the next one. The whole idea of trying to keep people playing your game - and your game alone - bugs the hell out of me.
Hate to go all PC on everyone, but this about says it all when it comes to gender representation. (Thanks to
@tha_rami
for sharing this and to whoever made it in the first place.)
Who would have thought people would do things like this 20 years ago? Deus Ex 1 Ambient Mix - Chill Out via
@YouTube
. I'm going to listen to this a lot.
Hey, hey, hey - I almost forgot: it’s Oswald the Lucky Rabbit’s birthday! Trolley Troubles debuted on September 5, 1927. Happy birthday to my favorite cartoon star!
Yeah, this was inspired by the new Deus Ex games, not the ones I worked on, but still, this kind of thing doesn't happen for just any game. Really proud to have been a part of the creation of the franchise.
Is there anything worth tweeting about right now other than children being separated from their parents. I was going to tweet about E3, but it seems so trivial.
Great story about Harvey Smith and Deus Ex. Reminds me what a great (dysfunctional!) team we had. Harvey's memories complement my own but are slightly different - a reminder how important it is to get multiple viewpoints to capture the whole picture.
I don't believe games cause violent behavior. Not for one second. However, the videogame reel shown at the White House on Thursday is simply disgusting. Every shot is in colossally bad taste and everyone associated with those games should be ashamed of themselves. They hurt us.
Six vaping deaths, 500 vaping illnesses and it’s a national emergency. “Ban ‘em!” Tens of thousands of gun-related deaths every year and it’s “Oh well. Nothing we can do.” What world am I living in?
Deus Ex and System Shock 2 made the list of Ars Technica's favorite games. A great selection of games and an honor to be included. (Though, to be clear, I had nothing to do with SS2, having worked only on the first game in the series and now the third).
I couldn’t agree more. QA is critically important in game development. All you directors, producers, engineers, artists, designers and audio people out there never forget that QA makes sure we don’t look like idiots (any more than we actually are).
Check it out - I made the “50 over 50” game developers list. Now I have to check and see if I’m the oldest guy on the list. I think I have a real shot at that honor!
To hell with age-ism!
Accuse video games of occasional bad taste? Sure. But causing violence? Can we please put this idea out to pasture? It’s nonsense. Guns are designed to kill. Assault rifles are designed to kill a lot. Easy access leads to mass shootings. Could it be any clearer? Thanks
@Reggie
Now it’s “guns don’t kill people - videogames and smartphones kill people.” Seriously? Seriously?! Just when you think things can’t get any stupider...
My sister called me last night to ask if I was okay in the wake of the latest mass shooting in Texas. I am okay - I live hundreds of miles from Midland-Odessa - but the fact that she’s had to do that twice in a month... Do the math, America. Gun control. Now.
I don’t know if Beto should be president or not - I’m still on the “anybody but Trump” train - but he’s sure cutting to the chase these days! Gotta respect that.
Can you imagine what this young woman is going to be like, what she might accomplish, when she grows up? Astonishing. My "hopes & prayers" are that the so-called "adults" will sit up and take notice. No. To hell with that. Screw hopes & prayers. Screw noticing. It's time to act.

Okay, this has been a very cool day. First
@elonmusk
says he's a fan of the original
@DeusEx
. Now
@notch
says he's a fan. If I'm not careful this could go to my head! ;-)
@VG247
Well the rest of my sentence was that at the end of the day I had a real Deus Ex experience and the team really respected the franchise. This comment was taken totally out of context. (Also I scream in frustration at every game I play - even my own.)
I really, really try to steer clear of politics on Twitter, but when the resident of the White House says it's okay to accept intel on a political opponent from a foreign power it really is time for impeachment. I mean, how can America say that's okay?
Most of you probably know that OtherSide, the company I'm with, is working on Underworld Ascendant, spiritual successor to the UW games of the '90s. The game had a coming out party at PAX South and the press coverage is starting to pour in. Like this:
@RichardRouseIII
I have several rules- a whole set of "commandments" I post around the office. One of them is "Never judge your player." That means let players play & solve problems the way they want to, not the way you require them to. Don't pre-determine what's good and bad for them.
My Nintendo Switch won’t charge or turn on. Customer service will “see if they can repair it” for $99+$10 shipping. It’ll take 3-7 weeks and they can’t guarantee they can help me. This is a known problem. They should be bending over backwards to deal with it. Very disappointing.
I wonder if Epic Mickey is included in the Walt Disney Family Museum exhibit about the history of Mickey Mouse? I bet not, but I guy can dream, can't he? Regardless, I'd love to see this show.
@IanSchreiber
@RichardGarriott
used to complain that villains in games did nothing but wait for “heroes” to show up - it was those heroes who did all the bad stuff in pursuit of those villains. That always struck me as a really smart observation.
