Getting requests from German media who have discovered that there’s a war in Libya, now that Turkey is making its intervention official.
It was fine as long as it was UAE & Russia driving a war on Europe’s doorstep - but when Erdogan gets involved, alarm bells are ringing.
Macron singling out Turkish support for Haftar‘s opponents is a stunning illustration of France‘s double standards on foreign meddling in Libya.
Essentially, France‘s Libya policy is a function of its arms sales to UAE and Egypt.

Pretty extraordinary stunt from the foreign minister of an EU member state: flies into Tripoli but refuses to meet with foreign minister there, then flies to Benghazi, meets with Khalifa Haftar, and issues a statement in front of the LAAF flag.
The Foreign Minister of the Libyan transitional Government tried to force her presence at the airport so that I would have to meet with her. As a result, I cut short my visit to Tripoli and departed for Benghazi, where I outlined 🇬🇷 positions (statement in Benghazi, 🇱🇾).
Haftar, who in 2017 for months stopped all food, medicine, fuel from reaching Darna, saying he was "choking" the city; randomly shelled & heavily destroyed it in 2018/19; had 100s arbitrarily arrested & tortured; forcibly displaced 1,000s more. Trying to pass as Darna's saviour.

One year ago, Haftar launched his offensive on Tripoli.
Haftar has told foreign diplomats that immediately before, he spoke to

, who said: “if you need to do it, do it quick”.
When it happened, the US and EU did nothing, and said what amounted to nothing.
Had Haftar won the Tripoli war, we would never have heard about the mass graves in Tarhuna. Instead, we’d be reading pieces by analysts explaining how the support of “the tribes” in Tarhuna was key to Haftar’s success.
Thrilled to announce that my book, Libya‘s Fragmentation, will be published in March 2020 by

It‘s a book about Libya since 2011, and about social transformation in civil war.
The Libyan “tribal notables” who met Sisi to legitimize Egyptian intervention were headed by Saleh al-Fandi.
Fandi is the public face of the Kaniyat militia, which murdered hundreds in Tarhuna over the years. Mass graves of their victims keep being discovered in Tarhuna.
If you’re wondering why there currently is no water in Tripoli:
The guy in the red shirt was appointed by Haftar as mayor of Shweirif, in the place of the elected mayor. His brother was arrested in Zawiya, and he wants him released. So he shut down the water for 3m people.
Who are the forces fighting each other in Tripoli? Is this a war between an “army” and “the militias”?
A thread about social media, access for researchers and journalists, and narratives of the conflict.

False. Khaled al-Sharif is not in Tripoli. And talk of "Islamist" dominance in the GNA is highly misleading. I'm so tired of this nonsense. Go find another bogeyman.
Another sign of

The “army” as a family enterprise. Left to right: Haftar’s son Saddam, Haftar’s son-in-law & nephew Ayoub Busaif, Haftar himself, Haftar’s son Khaled.
A key reason why talks about military reunification have not progressed & stand little chance of success while Haftar is around.

“Death is better than this.”
Shocking images of starving, emaciated children from inside Gaza are laying bare the desperation inside the strip, as
@nadaabashir
reports.
This Egyptian MP, long a glowing admirer of Haftar, last night claimed that 1) the GNA had killed its intelligence chief; 2) Haftar‘s air force was above Tripoli; 3) Haftar‘s forces were pushing into central Tripoli; 4) Serraj had fled on a plane.
None of this actually happened.
Some entertainment: billionaire with 6.7m followers tweets photoshopped pic that would have people believe that "terrorists" wear balaclavas even when they're in hospital.
“It is nuts,”
@FWehrey
said of Mr. Trump’s statement. “Even judging by the hard-nosed American goals of stabilizing the flow of oil and combating terrorism, this is completely shocking.”
Haftar’s announcement that his organization is now formally taking over power makes no sense, especially as his forces are on the defensive.
He gains little, and he loses the facade of civil institutions he used since 2014. He risks pushing some allies into his enemies’ arms.
"Israels Partner hätten viel früher und entschiedener auf die Einhaltung des Völkerrechts beim Krieg in Gaza dringen müssen." - Stimmt. Aber deutsche Leitmedien hätten das auch viel früher und klarer schreiben müssen.
For the Elysée, Turkey is still the only state destabilizing Libya. Still no need to mention Russia or the UAE.
Let alone to reflect on the role French support for Haftar’s war played in prompting Turkish intervention in the first place.

Last August, Aref Nayed appeared in a winter cloak in the Benghazi summer heat masquerading as a tribal leader, and said that Haftar‘s militias were “spreading Mohammad‘s true religion in Tripoli”.
Now he claims he doesn’t want more young men to die.
Over the past ten days, there have been consistent reports that Mahmoud al-Warfalli, who notoriously filmed the mass executions he carried out and is wanted by the ICC, is in the Bani Walid area to mobilize a force for Haftar’s war effort.
“It is as though this is a little war among friends, and outing the contestants would be impolite.”
My take on drones, deniability and disinformation in the Libyan war as symptoms and agents of the new international disorder.

Would the UAE be embarrassed by a Pantsir system it supplied to Haftar that has now apparently fallen in his enemies' hands? Would it finally acknowledge its role in Libya - something it has never done?
Would Western states finally name and shame the UAE?
On the list of the 20 largest buyers of French weapons, Saudi Arabia ranks 2nd, Egypt ranks 4th and the UAE 6th.
Turkey is not on the list, it ranks around 30th.
Confused as to why France would suspend weapons sales to Turkey over its latest Syria incursion but continue to gleefully arm Saudi Arabia despite the Yemen debacle and Egypt and UAE despite their disastrous Libya war

I guess that after all those red carpets in Western capitals he may be forgiven for thinking he is Libya’s head of state.
Why Khalifa Haftar (and Western governments) misjudged the reaction Haftar‘s grab at Tripoli would provoke in western Libya.

Libyan armed groups have been undergoing a process of institutionalisation. Their quest for official status is no longer a matter of camouflage: they are the Libyan state, such as it exists today. Forget about SSR/DDR.
Pictures out of a large batch that are now all across Libyan social media, apparently from the phone of a Darfurian combattant in Haftar‘s forces.
Some, such as these ones, are quite striking.

Many Libyan tweeps commenting on how Saudi & UAE accounts with a large following & associated bots are weighing into the ongoing conflict in western Libya - with propaganda, fake news & incitement in support of Haftar‘s operation. This is new, at least on that scale.

Haftar’s religious extremists (here: members of the 128th Brigade in Ubari) threaten to fight and kill apostates (“khawarij”), by whom they mean anyone not loyal to Haftar.
I'm seeing many respectable media outlets either state explicitly, or suggest implicity for brevity purposes, that Haftar's forces captured Darna from the Islamic State.
This is false. In fact, Haftar obstructed the local campaign against IS, which drove out the group in 2016.
Saddam Haftar, whose Tariq ben Ziyad brigade has arbitrarily held & tortured Darna residents for years, tries to control all aid for Darna, using the disaster to empower himself. Meanwhile, his brother Siddiq blames the victims for ignoring his father's supposed evacuation calls.
It’s hard to explain this blatantly partisan stance rationally. It rings of anger that Turkey thwarted the Elysée’s preferred scenario for Libya.
Had that scenario materialized, the Kaniyat & Mahmoud al-Warfalli would be running amok in Tripoli right now.
In a fragmented Libya, Khalifa Haftar’s faction has been the only one to consolidate control over large swathes of territory.
How did Haftar build a core of loyal forces out of a loose and fractious coalition?
This Working Paper offers answers.
Joint declaration of concern over developments in the Eastern Mediterranean by Greece, Cyprus, Egypt, France and...the UAE.
Perhaps next time, other Mediterranean powers such as Iceland or Brunei can also join, for the sake of inclusivity.
Last night, Haftar's forces killed one and arrested dozens in in Sirte. Could backfire seriously.
Unsurprisingly, many who were outraged over Tripoli clampdown (which injured one) are silent on Sirte. Aref Nayed's media hasn't said a peep about Sirte.
Scale of withdrawal by Russian mercenaries (also incl. some Syrians) from the Tripoli front is astounding:
More than a dozen flights by an Antonov An-32 (mostly to Jufra), & a convoy of ca. 280 vehicles incl. 4 Pantsir now moving southwards - currently north of Shweirif.
Hate speech is fuelling the war in Libya on both sides. But Haftar's propagandists are on a wholly different level:
"There will be a huge revenge against Misrata. Our war is against Misrata. The Turks of Libya. Streets will be wiped out. We will crush and burn them."
Useful reminder from the elephant in the room, to all those trying so hard to ignore him, that he‘s still there & his intentions haven‘t changed.
Also worth remembering that the GNU now thankfully pays the salaries of this family business.
In his first free appearance since 2011, Saif al-Islam al-Qadhafi submits his candidacy for Libya‘s presidential elections in Sabha today - despite facing arrest warrants by the ICC & General Prosecutor in Tripoli.
This is only going to complicate the electoral process further.
Haftar‘s CoS & head of
#COVID19
committee: “We will pursue any doctor who says things that are wrong. We consider anyone who criticizes as a traitor. Criticism is not permitted.”
This follows the arrest of a doctor in Benghazi who openly criticized conditions of hospitals.
Haftar always insisted, publicly & to Western diplomats, his forces would enter Tripoli without a fight.
Now, it’s clear Haftar was and is willing to destroy Tripoli - destroy it, the way Benghazi and Darna look today - to rule Libya.
For Haftar, there is no political solution.
Haftar's forces withdrew from al-Wutiya airbase, their last foothold in the coastal plain.
This frees up GNA forces from western cities to move to frontlines south of Tripoli.
It also strengthens the sense among anyone except Haftar's true believers that his war is unwinnable.
This is a despicable attempt to portray the victims of today's shelling by Haftar's forces as collateral damage of an attack on a military target.
In fact, the four victims were killed by shelling on the Bab ben Ghashir area, nowhere near Mitiga airbase.
Reports that 3 civilians were killed in today’s shelling of
#Mitiga
airbase by the LNA. Clearly, the aim of the LNA was to take Mitiga out of operation given that it was one of the main bases for the effective Turkish drone campaign targetting its forces & supply lines.

I consider it an honour that

Khalifa Haftar declaring his candidacy in Libya's planned presidential elections right now.
Haftar's forces have by far been Libya's leading perpetrators of war crimes since 2014, and are bound to use intimidation or worse to influence the elections.
We hear a lot that Libya “threatens to slide into civil war” and that “there is only a political solution”. Both is wrong.
This is a full-blown civil war, and there is currently no political solution. The only plausible way how this war could end anytime soon is Haftar’s defeat.
This is stunning. 473 Russian air force flights into eastern Libya since 10 February 2020. (Meanwhile, a Syrian AF Il-76 flight into eastern Libya was tracked for the first time yesterday).
