£12million on a book of pictures of the Queen for every 5-11 year old?!
No.
Spend this money on classroom ventilation, on school trips out, on counsellors, on Free School Meals.
I'm a teacher who went on
#strike
in February. I've just looked at my recent payslip.
My strike action cost me £47.
Pleasantly surprised at how low it is.
Then I remember that that was the point of the strike action!

@NEUnion
As a parent I just received notice that an LSA at son2's school sadly died yesterday after catching covid.
This is devastating for the school and our island community. All my thoughts to her family and friends.
Another 53k cases today. Please, please allow schools to close.
As a teacher, at what point in January will I look at the register and see who's absent and realise that the virus is spreading at a rapid rate in my classroom and I am powerless to stop it with no masks, ventilation, distancing?
20%? 40%? 60%?
At what point do schools close?
I can confirm that I will be the
@unitetoremain
candidate for the
#isleofwight
in the coming General Election. Massive thank you to all the LibDems for taking part in this initiative, and putting our country first. It's not an easy decision for many of us, but it is the right one
We must scrap the usual school attendance rules!
There is NO WAY as a teacher that if I test positive for Covid in the coming weeks (which is looking more and more likely...) that I will be sending my 3 children to 3 different schools whilst I'm sick
Go on - fine me. Dare you.
After 21months of doing everything to avoid this virus, one of my boys has finally succumbed.
He only goes to school and then home. Not even on public transport.
21m I've been campaigning for
#safeschools
. Now it's in my house.
#COVIDisAirborne
Kids don't need hours of tutoring - they need sport, arts, clubs, activities & to be part of a lively & diverse society again.
Govt misses *another* chance to support youth mental health - and instead extends school to teach for tests.
Learning is for life - not just exams.
@MattHancock
@CMoiraM
The child is 4 years old.
That is not a toddler.
The government is expecting 4 year olds to sit still in rows, 2m apart for 6 hours a day next week.
Please don't make excuses for this flagrant breaking of the rules by those who made the rules.
If I was in charge of schools?
- offer vaccines to 5-12yrs
- ensure 12-15 get 2nd dose
- send air filters for buildings
- allow UV purifiers
- masks in classrooms for 11-18yrs (FFP2)
- protect kids
Only if these aren't done do we close schools...
Vaccinate. Ventilate. Mitigate.
Van Tam just told us to avoid close, crowded places with contact, noise, little ventilation and for several hours at a time.
That'll be English school classrooms then 🤨
Why does govt tell adults to avoid places that children and educators are expected to endure every day?
If you want:
- schools fully open
- students learning & doing exams
- younger ones safe
- consistency of education
- highquality lessons
- no interruptions to learning
THEN MAKE SCHOOLS SAFE!
We shouldn't be begging ex teachers
We should be protecting the staff we already have
It's not possible or logical to have schools fully open with no mitigations at the height of an R=3 pandemic.
We must urgently support and protect children and educators. This begins by ADMITTING that there is a problem which needs tackling.
"Plan B" is woefully inadequate.
My children are not going back to school tomorrow. I have spent weeks trying to influence this govt's pathetic handling of the pandemic.
It's now got to the point I have to protect my own kids and their teachers and families. It's the responsible thing to do.
Shops and hospitality closures and limits on indoor mixing is not a 'lockdown'.
Schools remaining fully open but without ventilation, vaccination and mitigations inc distancing will allow for rapid virus spread and risks to health for staff and kids.
Make schools safe.
Jenny Harries - schools are doing their best but they are NOT "very controlled areas".
Please, for the health of the nation, stop lying.
Our schools need to be reduced in numbers in January. They are NOT 'covid secure'. They are places which spread the virus.
Reports of classes and entire schools closing across the UK today - all due to Headteachers taking health and safety decisions whilst politicians shirk their responsibility.
This is so horribly familiar. Last time schools were forced to take action, it ended in a lockdown...
Why do UK schools find it harder to open safely after a pandemic?
Because our classrooms are crowded, schools have little outdoor space, teachers have too many pupils to care for.
We see massive obstacles to recovery due to intrinsic mismanagement of health & education by govt.
If government is insisting that schools must no longer isolate 'close contacts' of positive covid cases, or wear masks, or social distance, or be vaccinated - then what *protections* are schools being given?
Cases are soaring, and school holidays are weeks away!
Gavin Williamson says the Arts are "dead-end courses that leave young people with nothing but debt” 😮
£10.47 billion pa to the UK economy. 226,000 jobs.
Far from a 'dead end'! Fund these courses - grow employment and enrichment.
?
When schools went back in England in September 2020 the daily statistics were 2,420 cases and 32 deaths.
We are a long, looooong way from these low levels. And yet Boris Johnson is set to lift restrictions in all schools on Monday?
Criminal.
15 year old died after positive covid test.
Fifteen. Years. Old.
Do not tell me this virus does not affect the young. The young can catch it - and they die.
They deserve - at the very least - the same protections as the rest of us.
#OnlyWhenItsSafe
COVID and schools: I'm exhausted:
- as a teacher, trying to keep my classroom safe, learning going & spirits up
- as a parent with a child doing mocks & not knowing which exams will go ahead
- as a politician who has called for prioritising safe schools for 2 years
Shattered😧
My friends aren't Russian oligarchs, I obeyed all lockdown rules, still wear a mask on bus & shops, believe climate change is v real threat. I worry about energy bills, have kids at state school, only have 1 house, walk/ rail when I can, & can't abide liars.
💚 Who's with me? 💚
Autumn Statement - no money at all for schools.
*stares at 45p left in photocopying budget for the next ten days*
*stares at classroom full to brim*
*looks up to see if the holes in the roof are now filled*
They are failing a GENERATION of kids.
What a waste.
Sadly the decisions of this governmt since March have been consistently so poor that I have no faith in their judgement. The virus is out of control & they expect my 9yr old to be at school on Monday?
He is not going. I don't trust our current leaders. Our schools should be shut.
What are the new safety protections in schools?
What are the new safety protections in schools?
What are the new safety protections in schools?
❌No vaccines for pupils or staff
❌No medical masks for all
❌No phased transition or rotas
❌No ventilation
❌No distancing orSPACE

Dangerous times. Government banning civil servants from hearing from experts who disagree with current government policies is not only discriminatory but it generates ignorance and isolates the government from new and alternative ways forward.
It leads to idiocy.

@NEUnion
It's no surprise to teachers that the government are threatening schools with the courts to keep them open - that's all they have.
No PPE. No testing. No reduced class sizes, no laptops.
Just a bloody whip.
SUPPORT SCHOOLS PROPERLY and it wouldn't come to this.
As
@TheGreenParty
Education Spokesperson I disagree with Labour here.
This guidance is not welcome, is not clear and - on the contrary - is liable for legal challenges going forward.
We need schools to be a safe and welcoming space for all children- including trans children 🏳️⚧️
🚨 BREAKING: Labour has welcomed the government's new guidance regarding trans children.
Labour's Shadow Education Secretary says she welcomes the guidance, adding that the issue should be approached with "children's well-being being front and centre".
Forgotten students in this debacle:
- home schooled, private students who are left with no grade!
- BTEC students who are still waiting for news
- students who missed out on 1st choice last week who now have a year to wait to start Uni and no financial help or plans
- Year 12s...
How many special teachers have you got signed up
@nadhimzahawi
?
Seeing as 1/40 adults have the virus this week alone, by my calculations you will need 15,000 extra teachers a week just to stay still.
As teachers are more likely to get sick then 20k.
'100s' won't touch the sides.
Didn't prepare for the people of Afghanistan.
Didn't prepare to keep our food shelves stocked after Brexit.
Didn't prepare over the summer to reopen safe schools next week.
Is there *anything* which this government has prepared well for??
Schools could be safer - ventilation, masks, distancing, vaccines. But the government are not even trying to make them safer.
And now they acknowledge that we can only unlock when schools are closed??
So - schools are driving this virus. And still govt does NOTHING to help.
CONFIRMED: covid tests and masks not compulsory in school.
- so what extra protections do school staff, students and their families have?!
Are you seriously ordering 10million back in classrooms with NO PROTECTIONS??
@NickGibbUK
@GavinWilliamson
@BorisJohnson
Children pretending they have food for their school lunch but either hiding in the playground or hiding that their lunchbox is empty is truly, truly tragic.
We can give the top 1% £££££ of tax cuts, and leave thousands of children hungry?
Who *are* we??! Not in my name.
As
@TheGreenParty
Education spokesperson I strongly condemn these new guidelines for schools.
Students exploring views & activities outside of the values of this current Govt is not an "extreme political stance".
Such guidelines are authoritarian.
💉Many teachers and school staff had their last vaccination 5 months ago.
😟Their immunity is waning, just as we enter the most risky time of teaching in stuffy, unventilated classrooms.
😡Teachers and educators will not be offered the booster as they 'are not frontline staff'!
If I wasn't already convinced that as a teacher
@TheGreenParty
💚 is my home, the attacks by Labour peers Blunkett and Adonis have confirmed it.
The Unions are sensible & putting the health and safety of pupils and staff first.
No responsible politician should argue against that
🇪🇺 Pupils can go to school in some European countries - but they have:
- compulsory medical grade masks
- even at primary school
- remote learning for older children
- smaller class sizes
- fewer deaths and cases.
🇬🇧 UK children deserve these minimum of protections too!
More friends and family have got a positive LFT result in last 24 hrs and PCRs in short supply.
The official PCR results aren't going to reflect the actual state of positive cases are they? We will realise this in our hospitals but too late to manage well next month. It's chaos.
NHS privatisation has already arrived - this practice in Brading is set to close and leave 4,500 with no GP, meanwhile you can *pay* to access a GP in local pharmacies. We should not run a health service dependent on ability to pay.
No parental fines in a global pandemic.
Support parents with a *choice* to return their children to school next week.
Keep classroom sizes small.
Protect vulnerable families.
Listen to parents! 💚

I'm a teacher. Outside of work I make every effort to behave properly & respectfully.
It's part of Teacher Standards to 'demonstrate consistently the positive attitudes, values & behaviour which are expected of pupils.'
Boris has just promoted this MP to Education minister 😠
@tes
It's Williamson in Dec 2020 all over again.
You. Cannot. Give. Verbal. Ultimatums. To. A. Virus.
The Education Secretary actually needs to put measures in place:
- ventilation
- vaccination
- mitigations
Recovery from the pandemic for our kids is not only about education.
It is about recovering their childhood
- the fun and games
- the sports and arts
- laughing and playing
and being Together.
It's not about enforced academic tutors. Definitely not!
Labour refuse electoral alliances with any other party. Blind tribalism leaves me so disheartened. I strongly believe in working together in a diverse parliament which represents a full range of parties, values & backgrounds. Why don't Labour want this?
Incredibly proud to announce that my local party membership have ratified the meeting decision, and I will be the Green Party of England and Wales candidate for Isle of Wight East.
💚 Let's do this! 💚
Just because there is room now for me and my school colleagues in ICU, does not mean my kids can afford to lose their only resident parent.
Safe schools need ventilation, distancing, space, masks, test & trace and low low LOW cases in the community.
Failing cases is not enough.
We have a 'variant of concern' hammering at the door and we are going to move to 'plan b' with masks and distancing AFTER it gets a hold in the population aren't we.
How about we take necessary safety measures first, before we spread this virus?!

@WHO
say Avoid 3Cs:
- crowds
- close contact
- confined spaces
Schools see these factors overlapping for 6+hrs a day.
You wouldn't stay in a crowded shop with no mask, screens, space or ventilation for long.
But our kids & staff are in schools ALL DAY.
Allow schools to shut.
@GeorgeAylett
No no no. End free movement entitlement for all of us will increase inequality. Those with financial means will buy the visas and jump through the hoops to work and travel. The rest of us will have obstacles in our way. This is *not* equality.
Effectiveness of any 'lockdown' is only as strong as its weakest point.
Schools are our weak point. No PPE, no ventilation, no testing, no reduced class sizes, no laptops, no rotas.
The virus is still spreading in our schools, and from there it is growing in our communities.
"All schools to open on 8th March" after a closure where 54,000 people died:
❌ no compulsory testing
❌ no compulsory masks in classroom
❌ no extra ventilation
❌ no rotas or social distancing
❌ no allowance for families to learn remotely.
❌ no extra protections for staff
Merkel on schools is *spot on*. This is a once in a century event. If we endanger our grandparents for the sake of 3 days in school then how could we live with ourselves?
Meanwhile - UK government insist all schools in England remain open.
Unbelievable. Had to read this 3 times to be sure that
@GavinWilliamson
is happy to publicly say he wants freedom of speech in order to include right to be homophobic.
So - no line being drawn here??
.
@BBCRadio4
reporting the need for CO2 detectors in classrooms to warn about ventilation problems, and the lack of funding to put them in schools
SCHOOLS FULLY OPEN ON MONDAY
What has this govt been *doing* for the last 12 months??
My eldest son is in Year 11. He went into lockdown in 2020 before his GCSE courses began and before he started shaving.
He doesn't want schools shut and exams decided by teachers. I don't want schools shut.
I want schools open and safe! Ventilate. Vaccinate. Mitigate.
No surprise to educators that the
#LevellingUp
white paper presented by Michael Gove refers to forced Academisation, Free Schools for elite learning & pressurised attendance drives. Where's extra funding to overturn school cuts, focus on SEND & out of classroom opportunities? 1/3
Govt thinks by Jan 4th our schools can do FOUR things at once:
- teach exam classes (Yr11+13)
- teach key workers & vulnerable groups
- teach live, remote lessons
- put in place capacity for daily mass testing.
We were pushed just to open to regular classes.
This is impossible.
@johnredwood
Do you even have a basic clue about any of this? If the UK was the main exporter of shellfish into the EU of 27 nations & 100s of millions of people, to equate to that market we will have to eat shellfish for breakfast, lunch & dinner. And have the deep pockets to fund it. Idiocy
@theAliceRoberts
I have 3 children, all at different schools from next week. I teach in a 4th school! We spend 16 hours a day together.
The notion of Bubbles is false reassurance. They only exist so when a positive case is identified, they can justify not closing the entire school for 2 weeks.
👨🎓Now teachers have CO2 monitors will schools be reporting high classroom CO2 levels to environmental health?
🏥 Will action be taken to rectify and fix the lack of ventilation?
☠ If not, then all this will do is tell us that we are teaching in a dangerous place for our health!
Oh dear, Keir. "Let’s get school staff vaccinated & all our children back in school." 🤦♀️ Kids catch it & spread to their families!
If only you had spent the last 10m *opposing* the govt: fighting for *safe* schools with masks, ventilation, rotas & SPACE.
Like Greens 💚 have done.

Good.
But not enough. Confidence and trust and faith in OFSTED is rock bottom.
It must be scrapped and replaced with a more collaborative approach to improve standards in our schools.
This has been
@TheGreenParty
policy for many years.
This attitude is why Labour will never work with other parties, will never support electoral reform, and will increasingly isolate themselves. It's incredibly sad. What a missed opportunity to work *together* and overwhelmingly GTTO. Labour don't own morality, trust & good ideas.
@afneil
Schools in France:
- all pupils aged 6 and over have to wear a mask at all times
- universities are closed
- high schools are partially closed with students only attending on a rota basis.
Masks and rotas are exactly what the
@NEUnion
are demanding!
After the announcement that an extra 1.7million should shield, it's clear that come March 8th we will see this awful governmnt release restrictions far too quickly.
They are going back to their only, original plan:
- shield the vulnerable
- let virus rip
- 'herd immunity' for all
