“You only got this job because you are a woman.” I have heard this – directly and indirectly, since my start at ETH. This message “only because you are a woman …. “, continues to be repeated even today - when we win a proposal, receive an award, or take a leadership position.

I am happy for every woman who does not need to experience gender harassment and discrimination. However, watch out! A common persuasion tactic used by change-resistant leadership is to find and promote a few naysayers.

Passive resistance and gendered privileging are prevalent in our universities, leading to increased spending of tax money on 'fixing the women.' This approach may, in turn, further silence or marginalize women. The ellexx and Nature articles provide cost-effective solutions.
