Timothy Snyder, right now at
@IWM_Vienna
: “The decision of Ukrainians to fight back against the invasion is a gift to the Western world. They gave us time to think about what we want our future to look like. I don’t even want to imagine how grim things would be if they didn’t.”
There isn’t a conflict or escalation brewing in Kosovo atm. Kosovo Serbs set up roadblocks towards two main border crossings with Serbia in the north, in opposition to a move by the 🇽🇰 gov’t whereby Serbian citizens need special certificates when entering the country.
#calmdown
If Serbia invades
#Kosovo
, we should defend the Kosovars. 🇺🇦 is ready to act with our troops on the ground. 🇷🇸 is trying to start an aggressive war. Precisely according to Putin's method. As I said,
#Serbia
is Putin's Trojan horse in Europe. War anywhere in the world is terrible.
Zelensky signed the Istanbul Convention (treaty against violence toward women) into law today.
Europe’s right-wing have blocked the treaty’s ratification, claiming it imposes “a fluid interpretation of gender.”
Wartime Ukraine seems to care more about women than many EU states.
Sources indicate that Polish diplomats were at the event as well. As someone who has reported on the anti-LGBT sentiments in Poland, I never thought pro-LGBT activists would be able to use the "you had a gangbang in Brussels" argument against the government.
I absolutely love the memes of Joe Biden doing average Kyiv things that Ukrainians have already put together. They’re spreading like wildfire on social media 😂
I’m a little obsessed with this blue-and-yellow parrot raising the Ukrainian flag when he hears the country’s anthem. Animals are so much smarter than humans sometimes. (Source: Ukrainian telegram channels)
Pro-Russian protesters gathered tonight in Belgrade in front of the monument of Tsar Nikolai II (unveiled during a visit by Putin in 2014).
One of the organizers said that if Serbia imposes sanctions, twice as many would come out to protest.
North Macedonia will become a case study of how a country that managed to pull itself out of an autocratic & nationalist regime (through democratic means) to make extraordinary sacrifices for EU membership… was dragged right back into nationalist frenzy by the EU’s incompetency.
Too much for one society to swallow after the Prespa agreement and the name change.

🇪🇺 failure to deliver on its promises is a price my country 🇲🇰 needs to pay in order to progress in the accession process.
Since Serbia doesn’t recognize Kosovo, 🇽🇰 citizens need special “temporary documents” while residing in the country. PM Albin Kurti recently announced that Kosovo would reciprocate by demanding the same from Serbian citizens. The decision enters into force tonight.
Kosovo’s interior ministry published a video of Sunday’s attackers which includes Milan Radoicic, the deputy head of the Srpska Lista party who’s been blacklisted and sanctioned by the US and the UK.
Woo! I was just notified that I received one of the two inaugural Awards for Journalists from SE Europe, which honors "journalists who expose themselves to high personal risk for critical reporting," together with

. We're getting our awards at the Bundestag in June!
This is because the north of Kosovo is covered by more NATO/KFOR troops per capita than almost any place in Europe. They are stationed there to maintain order, and escalations like these are exactly when their powers come into force.
⚡️ Zelensky, together with the prime minister and the speaker of parliament, announces he signed Ukraine’s application for European Union membership.
So far EU treaties don’t allow for sped-up membership, but this forces the EU’s hand and makes them consider immediate options.
Ah Serbia. When you think the country’s foreign policy has already hit rock bottom and its image couldn’t be more tarnished, billboards appear in Belgrade congratulating Putin on his 70th birthday.

A drug-fueled orgy full of politicians and diplomats in Europe's capital of bureaucracy is precisely the distraction we've all been needing.
+ the intrigue of it involving Jozsef Szajer, a conservative politician from Hungary's Fidesz.
🍵🍵🍵
József Szájer, Hungarian MEP and founding member of Fidesz was caught in an orgy with 25 people, mainly men, and drugs in Brussels this weekend. Fidesz is the party of Hungarian PM Orbán, protector of conservatism and actively fighting against our LGBTQ+ siblings. (1/x)

The global media scene has been (rightfully) united in covering Ukraine’s struggle against a brutal invasion.
But demanding journos be “ashamed” for covering a legitimate angle of the story is ridiculous. These labels put the lives of the very journos who support you at risk.
Anyone covering Peter Handke's Nobel Prize in Literature who doesn't mention the fact that he went to the funeral of Slobodan Milosevic -- after being asked to testify in his trial at the tribunal for the fmr Yugoslavia -- is an offense to journalism.
Politically motivated (or influenced) Kosovo Serbs gathered on the roads towards the border in order to stop people from driving to Serbia. Similar roadblocks have been set up several times over the years, and while they do signal tensions, they rarely lead to armed escalations.
Snyder: “Just like Hitler thought countries like Austria, Poland and others were invented and shouldn’t have existed in 1938, Putin thinks Ukraine is a country that shouldn’t exist… that on top of the notion that certain language speakers across the border need to be protected.”
Russian FM Lavrov is supposed to be in Belgrade on Tuesday, but it remains unclear how he’ll get to Serbia.
Montenegro, North Macedonia and Bulgaria (i.e. countries all around Serbia) have banned the Russian gov’t plane from flying over their territory.
Snyder: “Mr Putin’s statement that he wants to de-Nazify Ukraine is not just factually grotesque, but it’s also a weapon directed at the European conceptualization of WWII… it is a war of aggression on European memory.”
Serbian president Aleksandar Vucic just declared a state of emergency & told foreigners to not visit Serbia “except for the Chinese, you should come.” He also said the EU is limiting its export of medical equipment “so we got everything from China. Some things even semi-legally.”
Serbian outlet
@N1infoBG
talked to people in Belgrade about the invasion of 🇺🇦. Most respondents claim “Russia is defending itself” and “people in Ukraine are Russians.”
This is what destroying critical news outlets and tabloid domination do to a country
Ever since Kurti was elected PM, he has tried to solidify Kosovo’s independence by doing to Serbia what Serbia has done to Kosovo — as in, if you don’t think we’re independent, watch us exercise our powers on our territory.
Snyder: “…this despite the fact that German speakers in Austria were freer than German speakers in Germany, just like Russian speakers in Ukraine are freer than Russian speakers in Russia.”
Snyder: “According to Putin the meaning of WWII is that the leader of Russia can accuse anyone of being Nazis or of committing genocide. He’s saying the words mean whatever Putin says they mean… and also renders all European institutions and values built after WWII meaningless.”
There are currently around 4,500 NATO soldiers in Kosovo (before reinforcements from the UK were announced) so striking against them would be a massive fool’s errand. Then again, this past week has proven most people’s theories wrong so we can’t immediately write off anything.
Breaking - White House has just warned of a ‘large Serbian military military deployment’ on Kosovo border including ‘unprecedented staging’ of advanced artillery and tanks. Calls for withdrawal. ‘We believe this is a very destabilising development’, NSC’s John Kirby says
The only thing this frantic fear-mongering (and spreading of alarmist disinfo) will achieve is that (armed) rabble-rousers will feel encouraged to actually go out and shoot people while the whole world is watching. So have that on your conscience while you spread fake news.
The protest was organized by right-wing organizations, and local outlets report that the Night Wolves participated as well. Protesters held up placards with a capital letter Z on them.
The KFOR (NATO troops part of the Kosovo Forces) have active and regularly updated intervention plans on all the main roads leading into Kosovo in the North, which they can implement whenever they deem the situation to have significantly escalated.
These scenes of apartment buildings shelled in Mariupol are particularly jarring for those of us who grew up or spent time in identical socialist tower blocks built all across communist countries in Europe.
Blink, and this could be any city from the Czech Republic to Bulgaria.
Of course, this comes on the back of a month-long spat between Kosovo and Serbia over how that border in particular (which Serbia considers an internal, administrative border) should be handled. I wrote about the last time things got intense last year:
There have been sirens going off in North Mitrovica, the main Serb-majority municipality in the country, for a good part of the day. They’re intended to go off anytime there’s even a whiff of an incident that could endanger civilians, so that they know to stay off the streets.
Snyder: “There should be no taboos in the discussion of history. It’s the taboos that lead to wars, bc they allow for a situation where a nation or country only sees themselves exclusively as the victim, and others or the side as only the aggressor or the evil side.”
Finally, a deal has been reached. For the first time ever since the wars of the 1990s, Kosovo citizens will travel through Serbia with Kosovo documents (ID cards) and not temporary documents issued by the Serbian state.
We have a deal.
Under the EU-facilitated Dialogue, Serbia agreed to abolish entry/exit documents for Kosovo ID holders and Kosovo agreed to not introduce them for Serbian ID holders.
(1/2)
Another great day for peace with Middle East – Muslim-majority Kosovo and Israel have agreed to normalize ties and establish diplomatic relations. Well-done! More Islamic and Arab nations will follow soon!
At this moment (obv subject to change) Kosovo Police confirm that they were shot at while on the ground in the northern part of the country, but that no one has been injured. They also confirm that Kosovo Albanian drivers close to the border crossing were hassled by local Serbs.
Novak’s dad Srdjan to Serbian outlets: “Tonight they can throw him in a dungeon, tomorrow they can put him in chains. The truth is he is like water and water paves its own path. Novak is the Spartacus of the new world which won’t tolerate injustice, colonialism and hypocrisy.”🤣
"If they don't let him go in half an hour, we will gather on the street"
Novak Djokovic's father has accused Australian officials of "holding my son captive" after the tennis star landed at Melbourne airport overnight.
As someone who has personally visited Bondsteel (the biggest US army base in the region, found in Kosovo) and the barracks of various NATO members close to the border — I can claim with almost 100% certainty that Russia or Serbia cannot (re)occupy Kosovo overnight.
The reason Serbia is “upset” is bc Kosovo did this outside the EU-monitored dialogue between the two, intended as the venue for solving outstanding bilateral issues. It messes with the perception President Vucic tries to emulate that he has everything under control.
Today, for the first time since tensions erupted last year NATO peacekeepers intervened between Kosovo Serbs and Albanians. Thousands of Serbs gathered in north Kosovo towns to prevent Albanian mayors from assuming office, forcing NATO to insert itself between the two sides.
This presser has not gone well. Sergey Lavrov has just briskly walked off, leaving
@trussliz
on her own at the podium. He said talking to her was ‘like talking to a deaf person’ & said what Russia does in its own territory is ‘not her business.’ She’s now got lunch with him…
We’ve been watching Ukrainian president Zelensky slowly grow more exhausted each day, but these videos (usually one in the morning and one sometime past midnight) seem to be really boosting Ukrainian morale. Many thought he didn’t have it in him.
While none of this is “normal” or welcome, it sadly isn’t extraordinarily out of proportion to previous incidents in the north. Various political and criminal Kosovo Serb groups flex their muscles when they feel their domination in that area is threatened, and yes, they are armed
Covid is killing more Sarajevo citizens daily than 4 years of shelling in the longest capital-city siege in modern warfare.
Ironically, its current political problems have largely been carried over from the 1992-1995 conflict

Breaking 🚨: Kosovo outlets report that after meeting with top political leaders, the US embassy in the country requested that the full implementation of the deal on entry documents and license plates be delayed for 30 days.

Five white Germans argue that members of the Roma and Sinti community are not offended when the G-word (or in German, the Z-word) is used to refer to them.
One talk show guest says: “I’m blonde and have large breasts, imagine what people say about me!”
A gathering in Belgrade next to the Serbian presidency in honor of Srebrenica has to be heavily guarded, while far-right groups play Islamophobic and Chetnik songs.
But they go off when there are police raids there as well, like they have in the past year or so when the police confiscated illegal goods. While they are definitely unpleasant and startling, the main goal is to make sure civilians aren’t accidentally caught in crossfire or w/e.
Russia’s ambassador to Bosnia continues with his thinly-veiled threats.
Asked by the journalist about his recent statements, he basically says: “Bosnia can join any alliance it wants. We reserve the right to react, and Ukraine is an example of one of our reactions.”
“Ukraine’s example shows what we expect. Should there be any threat, we will respond.”
Russia’s ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Igor Kalbukhov, says the Balkan nation could face a Ukraine-like scenario if it decides to join NATO
While Russia is *always* happy when things go haywire in the Balkans, this incident was entirely tied to a decision by the Kosovo government that was announced ages ago, and the fact that Serbia is unhappy about it.
Tensions are very high currently between Serbia and Kosovo, with reports of barricades going up in Serb areas of the province and clashes. It’s an evolving situation tonight but it’s possible that Serbia has upped the ante as part of a geopolitical move coordinated with Russia
Well the key difference that most people miss is that the West was involved in negotiation after negotiation with the Yugoslav Serbian leadership. The NATO offensive didn’t happen overnight, but was in fact the result of a LOT of failed agreements and broken promises.
Still trying to wrap my head around the whole business of Nagorno-Karabakh. In 1999 NATO bombed the hell out of Yugoslavia for lesser sins. This time, no one seems to care. Even newspaper headlines have barely registered that anything is amiss. What are we looking at here?
“Western arms deliveries complicate the situation… Ukrainian nationalists are using several thousand foreigners as human shields and won’t let civilians leave, according to Moscow.”

Bosnia called, it wants to tell Ukraine that more than two decades later it’s still being perceived and analyzed exclusively through the perspective of its neighbors despite the war crimes and aggression they perpetrated in the country.
Ukrainians are unhappy because the West is still pushing them into the format of fraternal friendship between the three nations. Ukrainians don't see themselves in this scheme anymore, while the West is still living in this paradigm. This is the problem. 6/7
Kosovo has a three-tiered response system, whereby local forces, EU police, and NATO troops can react anytime there are escalations (unlike other hotspots in Europe) — which significantly minimizes the risk of all-out war.
My explainer for
@POLITICOEurope
So another European country *not* supporting sanctions against Russia is Bosnia, whose Croat and Serb MPs did not vote in favor. Bear in mind, these are HDZ (Croatian Democratic Union) MPs — a satellite of the ruling party in Croatia, an EU member, and the EPP group.
There’s been a lot of disinfo around the ongoing Kosovo-Serbia crisis so here are a couple key developments you should keep straight 🧵:
The heads of the technical teams in the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia are meeting on Wednesday in Brussels to discuss possible solutions.
The conservative politician said following his resignation that police found "an extasy [sic] pill, but it is not mine." Szajer is a close ally of Viktor Orban and helped rewrite the Hungarian constitution to include a line specifying marriage as a union between a man and a woman
Worth pointing out that in Albanian, for example, “Lopa” means cow. It’s mainly used in casual conversation to denote someone of inferior mental capabilities.
#LOPA
⚡️Bosnia’s peace envoy Christian Schmidt just triggered the Bonn Powers — supranational capacities granted to him by the international community — to override a law on property backed by Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik.
Schmidt said the law threatens the Bosnian constitution.
Serbian Interior Minister Aleksandar Vulin: “Serbia will never be part of the anti-Russian hysteria in which the property of Russian citizens and the property of the Russian Federation is stolen, just as we will not ban Russian media.”
Serbia is a frontrunner for EU enlargement.
While the Amstor mall in Kremenchuk is still in flames, Kremlin propagandists spread theories on how the attack was “constructed” to pin the blame on Russia, calling it a Bucha 2.0.
Remember this the next time you say disinfo isn’t the rotting core of our flailing democracies.
Pro-Russian protests were held today in Banjaluka, the center of Bosnia’s Serb-majority entity and organized by local members of the Night Wolves — a motorcycle club that participated in the occupation of Crimea, often referred to as “Putin’s Angels.”
Currently Serbia is the *only* European country not to have condemned the invasion and assault on Ukraine.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has a cosy relationship with Putin and needs Russian support to block international recognition of Kosovo.
On the fourth day of me basically live-tweeting the Kosovo-Serbia crisis, I just want to reiterate one thing for everyone — I’m a journalist, I adhere to the rules of the profession. Particularly in these times, I need to be more careful than others. Take from it what you will.
Next-level trolling: By renaming the street on which the Russian embassy in the Albanian capital is found, they’re forcing Russian embassy staff to write out “Free Ukraine” anytime they want to get mail delivered or have to give out their address 🤣
With all due respect for the immense, soul-crushing horrors Ukraine has been facing for five months, Kosovo has been facing tensions since (at least) 1999. I continue to be baffled by the lack of understanding in Ukraine about a war that Putin mentions basically every day.
The reality in which all of
#Ukraine
lives for 5 months came to
#Kosovo
. We know what it's like to live like this. We wanted the world to stop wars, not start them. The world must finally understand that
#Russia
,
#Putin
and all their "allies" are the cause of conflicts and wars.
Putin reminds me of every nationalist politician I’ve profiled. They’re convinced that if *only* they could sit down and *explain* everything, people would agree with them. Instead, people finally understand he’s off his rocker.
Being elusive and mysterious worked a lot better.
NATO-KFOR just came out with a statement saying 1) they’re monitoring things on the ground in Kosovo, as per usual 2) it has a UNSC mandate to intervene if things go badly 3) they’re in touch with authorities in both Serbia and Kosovo.
Looks like war won’t break out tonight.
From now on, I will respond to people interrupting me when I speak with “For what purpose do you seek recognition?” — just like Schiff.
#ImpeachmentHearings
A lot has already been said about his disgraceful statement, but I’d just like to add — when journalists don’t call Orban a far-right, revisionist and Islamophobic leader, we risk becoming enablers.
The monument to Nikolai II was unveiled during a visit on October 20, the anniversary of the liberation of Belgrade in WWII by the Partisans and the Red Army. Another example of Putin’s tendency to mix antifascism with Russian nationalist or imperial symbolism.
Four Czech citizens have now been arrested in Polican at another weapons depot. Polican is to the south of Gramsh, approx 2 hours away.

Deeply saddened by people in Kosovo and Albania for the horrible things they’ve said to me and about me in the last couple of days, online and in private messages.
Ignoring doesn’t seem to work, so now you’re going to get called out for falling for disgusting media spin.
What a week for
@UnaHajdari
She started by branding Kosovo in Politico as a ‘nation that tends to produce some of the region’s most intractable problems’. Went on to praise PM Rama in FP. And now, to finish the week, she chooses to come to the rescue of Bregovic… !
As someone who was born in the midst of war, went to kindergarten amidst air raids and became a journalist to cover the consequences of war and hatred, all I can say is... I wish there were more more world leaders who could deliver speeches like this on the precipice of conflict.
Millions watched two Kosovo women claim gold medals last week, which may be no big deal for Olympic behemoths like China or the US. For Kosovo, it's much-needed attention after years of barely any new recognitions of its statehood.

For Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, this hurts his pride and he’ll try to save face by making inflammatory statements like the one below to deflect from the fact that his hands are basically tied.
The statements that came from the Kosovan and Serbian sides, respectively, after the meetings held in Brussels today were some of the most bizarre I’ve heard in years, so after going over all of them several times I thought it’d be worth comparing them all in a thread 🧵:
After the 1999 NATO bombing of what remained of Yugoslavia (yes the thing Putin always mentions), Serbia withdrew its military and political presence from Kosovo and signed the Kumanovo Agreement which set up a NATO-enforced air and ground safety zone.
A massive story from Bosnia today: High Rep Valentin Inzko circumvents the country’s institutions to pass a law against genocide denial, something Bosnia’s legislators couldn’t do for years.

Serbian President Vucic was a guest on CNN last night. Seemingly unhappy w the questions he was asked, pro-govt tabloids decide to go after Amanpour. The same tabloid alleged she “hates Serbs” b/c she was in love with Bosnian Serb war criminal Ratko Mladic and he rejected her. 🤣
I have to say I’m mildly disappointed by the lack of Bulgarian public intellectuals opposing the nationalist rhetoric towards North Macedonia. People make fun of the Western Balkans but there are always people who’ll criticize dumb stuff their gov’t does, at great personal risk.
My first controversial opinion of 2022: I actually liked “Don’t Look Up”.
I can see why some people think it’s gimmicky, but the parts where nobody believes the rational scientists *really* resonated with the frustrated journalist in me.
Additional NATO and Kosovo police presence has been placed on the bridges between Serb-majority North Mitrovica and Albanian-majority South Mitrovica, to pre-empt spillover tensions. FYI, the main bridge between the two municipalities has been closed off for almost two decades…
