This has been a difficult night. Racing goes on here because that's our job while tweet after tweet reveals the devastation and loss at San Luis Rey. Vets & volunteers needed, colic watch, horses saved, horses terrified, heroic grooms and heartbreak, crushing heartbreak.
Good morning! The tapeta era dawns on Turfway at dusk. Join us via

Rest well, Pat. Pat Lang passed away Friday, 11/17. He was our track photographer from early '80s until retirement in 2014. A kinder soul you never met. Condolences to his family & friends.
We send our best wishes to one of our top young riders Joseph Ramos who is recovering from a bike accident that occurred Saturday morning in Puerto Rico.
Ramos suffered multiple fractures but is conscious and alert.
In honor of Jeff Ruby Steaks week, let’s take a look back to 2011 when Animal Kingdom went from last-to-first and five weeks later spiraled (see what we did there?) his way to victory in Kentucky Derby 137.
Watching fans and horseplayers leave tonight--the last night they're permitted on-site--I'm realizing that in two weeks we'll say goodbye to the old place without the people who've been with us for years--in some cases decades--and are friends, not just customers.
What a pedigree on this one! BE HERE is by Ghostzapper & out of the champion multiple Grade 1-winner Informed Decision! He won on debut tonight at the 'fway!
@CoadyPhoto
Congratulations to Amanda E. Barton! She saddled the first winner of her training career in tonight's 3rd race when Secret Town (15/1) went gate to wire under top rider Albin Jimenez.
Congrats to Ken & Sarah Ramsey
@Ramsey_Farm
on being named to the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame, Class of 2018. They're 14x leading owners here! Read about it:
Congratulations to 63-year-old "Ironman" Perry Ouzts, who rode his 50,000 career mount in tonight's 3rd race. Read about it: Photo: Perry's in the blue & green silks. Thanks,

Huge thank you to the jockeys, horsemen, gate crew, pony people, camera folks, outriders, valets and everyone else who braved the cold this evening and put on an excellent 8 race card!
We’re back tomorrow at 6:15 ET!
Happy 25th Birthday, Silver Charm! Now an honored resident at
@Oldfriendsfarm
, in 1998 Silver Charm finished the G3 Kentucky Cup Classic at our place in a dead heat with Wild Rush for the win. The battlers raced in a world of their own--17 lengths better than the show horse.
Best wishes to jockey
@a_concepcion16
who will be absent from tonight's card for a good reason...
Axel is one of three finalists at tonight's Eclipse Awards for the outstanding apprentice rider in 2023.
Join us tonight on X just prior to Race 1 (around 5:45 p.m.) when we go live with track announcer
@TonyCalo5
to get his thoughts on the season so far and to watch him call the opener.
And down goes the Single 6! Congratulations to one skillful bettor who turned 20 cents into $120,217.14 (and probably a bunch of other 20-cent bets into nothing). It’s the $120k for us!
Congrats to our player of the meet,
@nic00____
! Not only did he support racing w/ great spaces but also won the
@twinspires
leaderboard contest twice!
Thank you to everyone who helped make the 48-day
@TurfwayPark
Winter/Spring Meet as successful as it was. All-sources handle was up nearly $56 million (62%), purse money was increased by more than $5.5 million (43%) and 3,903 horses competed at the meet - 910 more than 2022.
Happy 18th birthday, BALL FOUR! Now a resident of

@TurfwayPark
during his career.

Timmy goes out a winner.
Best wishes to our favorite Hoosier as he steps away from his training career after tonight to become the Executive Director of the Indiana HBPA.
Congrats to Leo's Roar who won tonight at Turfway Park on the last night of my training career. Nice ride by Luan Muchado. Congrats to winning owner Ironhorse Racing Stable LLC. Thank to our staff and to all the people including my parents, girlfriend, and friends for coming.
That closes us out for the week -- just three more days on the schedule until the old Turfway gives way to the new. Join us--virtually--starting next Thursday for the end of an era.
Wayne Lukas will try to win his third Jeff Ruby Steaks on Saturday with Seize the Grey.
Let’s take a look back to 1983 when Lukas won the race for the first time with Marfa. Five weeks later he’d go on to finish fifth in the Kentucky Derby behind Sunny’s Halo.
The voice of Turfway Park,
@TonyCalo5
, is set to call his first Jeff Ruby Steaks.
Tune in to hear Tony's calls all day on the Turfway Park simulcast feed or on CNBC/Peacock from 6-7 p.m.
Track announcer has conveyed the "all clear" message and fans are returning to the building. The electrical fire was not in the grandstand. It was on the roof and was quickly extinguished.
Happy birthday to the Ironman, Perry Ouzts. 64 today! You'll have to catch him between races at Belterra to give him your good wishes--he's riding 7 today.
