A thread on Emma Frost, Jean Grey, bodies, autonomy, pride, guilt, sexuality, outside influence and why I don't believe Grant Morrison, Phil Jimenez, or most of the New X-Men crew would be anti-body modification, dyeing hair, or cosmetic surgery or are "picking"Jean or Emma. 1/14

Ponyo was made *20 yrs later* and it's about a father missing out on this amazing fucking shit going on in his family's life.
Miyazaki can't stop himself.
@negaversace
I had high school students still saying, "gay" for anything they disliked last fall.
Queer has over 100 years of in-community use. Older in-community than "lesbian." Academic term for 50 years. And, a go-to protest term for at least 90 years.
Ed Piskor's suicide is a tragedy. Almost any suicide of this nature would be. But, we are not blaming the people he abused or pushed. We are not blaming anyone who helped bring his shit behavior to light. We are not doing that. Women he fucked with did not drive him to suicide.
@Khyron42P
@funandnormal
For the curious, Miyazaki has had a tempestuous relationship with his son & had just begun reconciliation when making Ponyo. He said he modeled characters on his son, his mother, other family, and that the morse code scene is an expression he wishes he had made irl.
Gerry Alanguilan has passed, at 51. He advanced inking techniques by being the first person to ink off scans at Marvel. He advanced the game on spot blacks in color comics. He advanced the soul of comics with Elmer, proving that he could tilt your entire world with just chickens.

It may be the individual pharmacy, employee, etc, but it's still down to the business.
When I moved back to the States, I was used to having intersex on my ID & insurance; was completely taken aback by the receptionist & nurse making fun of me before & after my appt at a clinic.

They're still trying to use him and his success to make some extra cash and act like they're remotely his fallback. Fuck'em.
And, yes, as often as you see some of those, I'm sure they've made plenty of bank off the images.

Simonson used this series as a great opportunity to show just how Superman's death, and how Superman dying, affects people who know him. Diana realizing the emptiness suddenly within her, in her life, without having anticipated it hits hard and true.
@JFrankensteiner
I'm still blocking people because earlier I said the World Cinema Project was both good and preserves many films by non-white directors. They all either want me to admit I think I'm too good for superheroes or to know I'm taking things too seriously.
Many of my comics peeps are following this guy and maybe he was cool before, but this is his mission at the moment and ask yourself, please, if you really want to stand with this.
No one working on New X-Men "took a side" with Emma & Jean. Several artists have declared a love for both, and along with Siryn, they've been noted as three femme faces of Grant Morrison in the run. Both get lines, decision & moments in which they shine & are correct. 2/14

No one is complaining in earnest or criticizing in good faith. They just want something to complain about and shout woke over.
Steve Ditko co-creates Hawk & Dove and The Creeper in 1968 for DC, the Question in 1967, Shade the Changing man got DC in 1977, draws and co-creates new characters for Marvel through the 1970s, 80s & 90s. Why are we so dedicated to repeating these myths?
@HelenaWayneBlog
I'm overwhelmed, this morning, thinking of (genderqueer, bi) Alan Napier, the 60s Alfred, talking about how his mother, a closeted lesbian, was absolutely destroyed by homophobia, misogyny, and *proper behavior*. That's "Heroes don't do that."
If I had to block over 300 separate accounts coming directly at me with threats of accusations of murder, I cannot imagine what people named in that letter or who had the bravery to come forward with their stories are getting from this compassionate, anti-bullying comics field.
@GunnerDobbins
I like The Clown at Midnight for its Harley. Both shuddering-inducingly horrifying but also very explicitly framed as both Joker's victim and *the doctor who was in charge of him but did not help*. He may have made her "worse," but she did the same from a position of authority.
Apparently, when discussing real life people associated with the creation of Batman who died of AIDS, we can't mention a person is gay.
There is zero reason to lie about history. Gay people exist.
Every character in New X-Men is hypocritical. It's a melodrama. It's a soap opera. Perfect people are the most flawed.
There's is are external entities pushing that melodrama. One of them, Sublime, is in Emma when her therapy becomes an affair. Another of them is in Jean. 3/14
The whole machine behind limiting the home-viewing of stage performance stuff, particularly Broadway performances, is bizarre and depressing. It's down to classism at this point.
"It's a stupid idea that kills people" is probably the best theme of Watchmen as a whole. It doesn't matter how stupid an idea is, what matters is how much it hurts and kills us. The Vietnam War was stupid. The Comedian was a goddamn idiot. It's all bad ideas.
The run ends with Emma getting the boy. Starting a new life. Taking over for a failed Charles and a dead Jean. Emma Frost literally closes the run. Ultimately, Emma is the most inspirational teacher in the run, the longest acting head, the endgame. 11/14
When Jean & Emma have it out, it is equally true that Jean is bullying a woman who was having an affair with her husband and healing her of her Sublime infection. Sometimes your doctor does their job & is an asshole. 6/14
Part of healing from Sublime is breaking through repression. Emma has been repressing herself since the genocide in Genosha. Her secondary mutation has a physical component, saving her body, but it has a psychic element: She can't feel and no minds can reach her. 7/14
Jean, with her WonderBra, platform shoes, reformed body, her "unnaturally thin wrists & ankles" is no more "perfect" than Emma Frost, who dyes her hair & had a boob job (in her platform shoes). No one making the comic is making a blanket lauding or condemnation of either. 4/14
Ted Kaczynski died, so let's make a concerted effort to remember he was a hard right white supremacist and was never left or an environmentalist and that "eco-terrorist bomber" was made up by logging companies and the worst episodes of your favorite crime shows.
If someone blames you directly for what Ed Piskor did, block them. Just block them.
I've blocked five in the past twenty minutes and I'm nobody. If they're coming for you, it's not because you have the power to "cancel" or even tried to. It's because they're ghoulish bullies.
@gncgalactus
Reread Ennis & Will Simpson's Batman arc, Freak Out, again, today, and it really feels like he sat down, "Batman: Hippies Suck," and then nostalgia, empathy, and Alfred telling stories about the time he dropped acid took over.
When I criticized Rachel Pollack's New Gods for being borderline or naively racist in a distinctly 90s American way, as well as commenting on that tendency, she didn't argue or get mad, but said that was probably a generous analysis and promoted the heck out of my piece.
@Free_Bird1006

Freddie wrote it into his own obit, so it feels like he really really wanted to be clear on it. The media/lotta fans, though: He must have meant gay.
Racist caricature & sexist objectification are not anyone's "art style" or 'just the way they draw." That's for fingers that are squared off or exaggerated light sources. Chiaroscuro faces or heads being done slightly larger than real to enhance expression. Racism is just racism.
Just before, she re-meets Quentin, a Phoenix, healed & positive (mostly), because everyone is flawed means everyone gets more chances. We reach out our hand to the dying & drowning, even if they could pull us in. Emma or Jean? is a zero sum nonsense. It's not a competition. 13/14
Reminder that in 1969/70 and 1973, DC and Marvel had unofficial crossovers betwixt each other and our world, when talent & staffers dressed up for a Halloween parade. This is touched on again in Grant Morrison's Seven Soldiers & Action Comics decades later.
Fun Fact:
The "JLA/Avengers" and "Marvel vs. DC" crossovers are considered canon, but both universes/companies can never explicitly name each other in-universe.
And Green Lantern
#87
(1997) is the only non-crossover appearance of Marvel vs. DC's Access.

Adding Eva Robin's, born in 1958, even as 64 isn't quite "old age." Actor, model, presenter, and comics fan. She began taking hormones at sixteen and was publicly out by twenty-one, and has always been professionally out
It is unlikely that Jimenez or Morrison feel having a nose job or dyeing your hair makes you a bad or weak person. And, not just because they're the two who confirmed Ragged Robin, in The Invisibles, dyes hers red, has an implant in her head, and wears silicone enhancers. 5/14
Not entirely related, but semi-apropos, the Three Ghosts of Batman arc went harder on ACAB Gotham than any other comic or arc I can think of. Just nailed it down how awful fucked up and meant to be that is not a flaw it is the system Gotham PD is.
@KrangTNelson
I steadfastly don't want to ask, Are the straights okeh? I don't want to judge real life couples being revealed in autobiographical comics. But, y'all. Y'all.

Accepted at 16. Folks like Jules Engel & Charles Gaines were very supportive, but rich kids ran over me figuratively and literally and the bully who took over my studio space to shoot up later got in a feud with Madonna. I still don't think any of my work is very good. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
While Charles Xavier intends to pass the school onto Jean, not Emma, for the same reason Quentin was his prize pupil even though he's a dick & not a great student. They're familiar to him. Emma is something different. But, Emma is running the school at that time. 9/14
One of the reasons Ultimate Cap stuck in my craw was everyone saying "that's how men were! that's the generation!" like it wasn't Jack Kirby's generation, like it wasn't my grandfather's generation. He's a doofy nerd artist who grew poor with gay friends and lotsa medical bills.

Someone tried to claim they "can't say a cyclist" and have to say "person who cycles," and no terf point has ever reflected reality. They know they're just making it up and have nothing. They just want to hurt people and when they can't hurt, to annoy.

Humbert: She cried a lot, and threw up, and begged me not to, and then she ran away and she died, I singlehandedly destroyed her life & some other girls', and now I'm on trial and going to die, but I think you understand.
Some weird readers: This definitely supports pedophilia.
@HBCompass
"Impulsively bought a house." "Impulsively got a grant." "Impulsively went to grad school." Does he know that "impulsive" doesn't mean, "didn't discuss thoroughly with me"?
Marvel didn't want me to tell you, but I'm actually writing the new Dazzler book. It comes out four times a year as high quality 48 pg albums and uses an array of experimental techniques such as blacklight fx ink and paying everyone living wages for working on this comic.
Copyright should terminate eventually. Trademarks should terminate. Workers and creators and talent should be paid what's due. Not what a company can't weasel out of. What's due. That includes the heirs of Steve Ditko and probably includes you.
@GemOfAmara
He came out for Shark Tale. He'll come out for this.
As a big fan of his Master Class, A Personal Journey, and such, I'm kinda happier with him doing promo. Though Tantoo or Lily Gladstone would be nice.
If your entire reply is "I hope you get caught too!" or "fuckin bitches be liars man!" you're getting blocked.
Might I suggest, instead of a misogyny, you do a therapy? If we all sought out help & worked on our mental health, situations like this could, perhaps, be avoided.
The real rule is that everyone who feels they're queer, is queer, and also, anyone who has read an issue of New Mutants from any volume, they're also queer.
Whatever you expect The Green Lantern to be, what Liam Sharp & Grant Morrison give you isn't that but it's better. The wild goodness. Emo beat psychedelia. What is, was, and what can be.
DKSA is the best thing Frank Miller has done with Batman (that isn't him throwing a tiny Christmas tree). And, the Varley color work is amazing.
Some folks just don't enjoy fun. (Or have different opinions than me.)+
@gncgalactus
Genetic Criminal is such a powerful statement on "genetic evil" or inferiority being bullshit and that it's over 40 yrs old and other comics writers are still doing "the evil in my genes" eugenicist stories just makes it better & stronger & more important.
@WiperPhitaker
The reasons she wore fakes, though, are fantastic. Either it's an heirloom fake pearl necklace, still worth a ton, or it's because she's passive aggressive opposing going to a dopey movie in a bad neighborhood to appease her family. Those are gold.
Of course, this Ed Piskor news does mean some people are going to be at a complete loss for what to recommend for Black History Month or when someone wants to know about the X-Men but also think Thunderbird has animal powers and Africa is a country.
"We can't expect diversity & representation from older artists."
Larry Hama, unable or unwilling to jump on a company character without writing a comic with new nonwhite characters, women who actually know other women, and someone androgyne or intersex.
I can't understand people who look at frank quitely's art and think these are all ugly people. Related note: I've never worried that his people were missing organs, going to snap their own spine, cut off circulation or catch themselves on zippers as with many comics artists.

Not Just Batman's Butler is an (over-editorialized?) wealth. He was very interested in the psychology of sexuality & gender. His romantic relationships tended to be w/lesbians & he was pained at not being seen that way enough for his first wife.
If you want a harrowing, but strong, compassionate memoir of queerness, check out Alan Napier's memoir, Not Just Batman's Butler. Redacted & cautious, his discussion of identity, his mother's repression as a lesbian, his gay wife, his path to comfort in gender & sex is *wow*.
Fuck Daniel. Fuck him. Fuck him and his criticism that Black & Native people are stealing Jewish thunder by getting the occasional race-theme anthology from Marvel. Fuck him for supporting nationalists. Fuck his passive aggressive hate-mongering & just asking questions. Fuck him.
Not for nothing but when you go from all but calling Nadia anti-Semitic to gleefully agreeing w an account calling Danny and I terrorists and lying about us, I very much side eye which accounts are following you.
Even more mutuals w this person, and he is regularly like this.
The "nonfiction novel" will be a hit piece, but imagine a fair & earnest book on Gail Simone & Kelly Sue DeConnick and how they interact with the comics community. How cool would that be? Couple of our best and how're you going to pretend Gail doesn't every day bring the joy?
