Dad. Educator. State Superintendent. Running for CA Governor to fight for better wages, more housing, gun safety, climate action & opportunity for all. He/him.
I didn’t come from money, power, or influence.
I'm running for Governor to be a voice for those who need one — because California may be working for millionaires and billionaires but for the rest of California — we need real change. Join us:
Tonight I went to a school board meeting to stand up for LGBTQ+ students who invited me to join them as they spoke out against a radical new policy that threatens their safety. When done speaking,the board president verbally attacked me an instructed the police to remove me.(1/5)
I want to thank the voters of CA for electing me to serve the 6 million students of CA. I intend to be a champion of public schools & a Superintendent for all CA students. I want to thank Marshall Tuck for his gracious call to congratulate me & wish me well. Time to get to work!
I ask — if I am forcibly removed from a public school board meeting as the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, how are everyday parents and students in Chino Valley Unified supposed to have their voices heard? (3/5)
I don’t mind being thrown out of a board meeting by extremists. I can take the heat — it’s part of the job. What I can’t accept is the mistreatment of vulnerable students whose privacy is being taken away.(2/5) Thread
CA is going into a stay home order but it does NOT change or impact our role, considered essential, & our duty to carry out the following essential services: Meals being prepared/delivered to students AND any function assoc. w/ keeping the continuity of learning moving forward.
Let me be clear: I will always stand with California students and will use every power of my office to protect them from politicians who seek to divide our communities instead of keeping our kids safe.(4/5)
I have sponsored AB 1078, which would fine any district that bans books to promote discrimination. Quality, inclusive education helps students from all backgrounds to succeed in school and life. Our children deserve nothing less.(5/5)
We must find better ways to measure learning that don’t involve high-stakes, costly testing that lines the pockets of a billion-dollar assessment industry. We should be investing in programs that offset learning gaps exacerbated during this crisis:
With millions of ballots left to be counted, we're digging in & waiting for every vote. The kids of CA are in it for the long haul & we are too. I’m so proud of the coalition we built & I thank the thousands of educators, students & public ed advocates who supported our campaign.
Thanks to everyone for your continued support! There are still millions of votes to count. Let’s count all the votes and make every vote count!

I will host a call to action and provide personal reflections in response to the death of George Floyd at a news conference Monday, June 1 at 10:30a.m. The news conference will be streamed on Facebook.
Our COVID-19 K-12 guidance was released this evening, & tomorrow, I am hosting a webinar to discuss the details. We have room for 5,000 & after just a few hours, we are already near capacity. Our colleagues need support & we are happy to provide it in these challenging times.
Today I had the honor of advocating for CA's students before state lawmakers as we addressed the urgent need for high-speed internet for all. Closing the digital divide is not just for distance learning, but to prepare our future workforce. Internet must flow like electricity!
Kamala always says you can judge a society on how it treats its children. Well, I think it’s time we judge our presidential candidates on how they treat our children, students and teachers. In that contest, Kamala Harris can’t be beat. Join me in supporting her campaign.
California lost an incredible public education leader today in Dr. Michelle King, who passed away after a brave battle.
Our sincerest condolences are with the family and friends of Dr. King, and the Los Angeles Unified School District family.
On behalf of the entire
@LASchools
family, we are deeply saddened to share that our beloved former Superintendent, Dr. Michelle King, has passed away. Words cannot begin to describe the sorrow we feel, the love we shared with – and for – Dr. King...
I had the honor of welcoming Vice President Kamala Harris to California. Lt. Governor Kounilakis, Mayor Breed, and I greeted her on the tarmac in San Francisco.
Investing in teachers, modernizing curriculum to teach creativity and critical thinking, and protecting CA public schools against Trump’s attacks – the work starts now to give every CA child the best public education. Watch my 2nd new ad "Gateway":
I just filed for re-election as Superintendent of Public Instruction, I hope to serve the next 4 years with a focus on recruiting 10,000 new counselors to support our students, ensuring our children can read by the 3rd grade, and preparing our children for jobs of the future.
.
@LupitaCAlcala
's deep & comprehensive grasp of CA ed. policy make her the most qualified choice to serve as my Chief Deputy Superintendent. She will be a champion for every CA student, working closely with me to improve public ed. at every level.
Thx you for the support!! if U vote by mail, please check status of your ballot ASAP. Thousands of ballots weren't signed & will not be counted if not fixed.Check the SOS website with links to every county registrar's ballot status page.

Banning for-profit charter schools in CA is a critical step to blocking the Trump/DeVos agenda to privatize public education. I hope other states will follow our lead to ensure that students, not profits, are the priority of public education nationwide.
Thank you voters for overwhelmingly electing me to serve another term as CA State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Much work ahead but honored to lead efforts to provide preschool for every 4 year old, to promote reading by third grade, and to recruit 10,000 counselors.
Today, I warned Chino Valley Unified School District that their pending resolution to restrict school facilities, including bathrooms, to students based on their “biological gender” is against CA law.
I did not have a personal relationship with
@repjohnlewis
, but I am fortunate to have met him. I’m even more grateful that I got to introduce my children to him. (1/4)
Check out my MSNBC interview ⬇️
MAGA extremists are forcing teachers and school staff to out LGBTQ+students. They’re also banning books. I won’t stand for it.
California’s schools should be safe spaces for knowledge and education for ALL children. I’ll never stop fighting for…
Kamala has shown up for California’s teachers and students more times than I can count. I was so proud watching her at the
#DemDebate
tonight. Once again she is demanding that we do better, because she understands that when we invest in our teachers, we are investing in children.
I'm proud to have announced my plan to close the teacher pay gap—giving the average teacher a $13,500 raise—at Texas Southern University earlier this year. This will be the largest investment in teachers in our nation’s history.

Yesterday morning I had the honor to welcome the students and teachers of Paradise Elementary to Bird Street Elementary in Oroville, their school home for now, after the devastating Camp Fire destroyed all but one of Paradise USD Schools.

Kicking off our expert panel to discuss the recruitment and retention of teachers of color. Currently, our teacher workforce does not accurately reflect what our student population looks like. Research shows that ALL students benefit from having a teacher of color on campus.
CA's students deserve to see themselves & their stories in the classroom. Today’s historic approval of a model

curriculum empowers schools to uplift marginalized voices, achieve racial justice & create lasting change:
I joined Governor Newsom's press conference today to update Californians on distance learning. I'm grateful to the Governor and our State Board of Education President who join me in believing that as we respond to this crisis, we must once and for all close the digital divide.
Proud to be endorsed by civil rights icon Dolores Huerta. We’re in this fight together for a public education system that serves all students and uplifts working people. ¡Sí se puede!
Please join me and

for Schools’ Superintendent. He’s under attack by those who don’t share our values that lead to social justice & quality public schools for all students.

I'm running for CA Superintendent because I believe public education is the key to every child's future. I'm proud to be the only candidate endorsed by
@CA_Dem
& classroom teachers.
It's Election Day. No matter who you vote for, please make sure to vote!
I'm honored to have the support of all five California statewide teachers of the year. They are among the top educators in California and I look forward to working with them to provide all of our students with an excellent education!
In recognition of trailblazing African Americans, today we honor Ms. Betty Reid Soskin. Ms. Soskin, 95, is the nation's oldest full-time park ranger. She is currently employed as a park ranger for the Rosie the Riveter World War II/Home Front National Park in Richmond, Ca.
The son of immigrants, our state’s first Latino Senator in history, and a dedicated public servant,

Honoring the great Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. today on
#MLK2019
. My hope is that folks take the time to really reflect on his legacy, and how important his words are, even now, so many years later. We have so much to learn from him and we still have so much work to do.
Like so many, I am struggling to process today’s violent attack on democracy at the U.S. Capitol while celebrating an inspiring display of democracy in Georgia. (1/4)
We can choose which future we want for our youth, and today must reinforce our commitment to using the power of education to end hate and bigotry, and to empower communities that have been made vulnerable by systemic inequity. (2/4)
I am honored to receive California Democratic Party endorsement. Public education allowed me to overcome humble beginnings, and I am committed to making sure that every child in our state has the same opportunities that were given to me. Thank you
@CA_Dem
!
I won’t equivocate on school funding. As Superintendent I’ll lead the campaign to close tax loopholes for corporations and raise billions of dollars for public education.
Thank you brother! Looking forward to you defeating Devin Nunes & giving the folks of the 22nd district the representation they deserve. I know Central Valley educators, students & working people can count on
@JanzforCongress
to fight for them.
What an honor it was to meet with this group today. I’m excited to work with them over the next year, and more importantly, I’m looking forward to learning from them! Congratulations to you all for being recognized as CA Teachers of the Year!
Congratulations to the 2020 California Teachers of the Year—Sean Bui, Brenda Barreras, Mandy Kelly (

Great family day event at Rialto Unified School District. 1300 people attended the workshops and events. My team is working to build a statewide family engagement program to help school districts strengthen their partnership with parents and family members. Great things happening…
We know that up to 1 million students still need devices for distance learning, and we’re in a race against the clock. School districts who sign up for this webinar will learn about new public-private partnerships to get the devices they need, and funds available
There is no better public servant than
@KamalaHarris
and there would be no Supt Thurmond without her mentorship and friendship. Amid great challenges, she embodies hope for our nation and for the millions of students who see themselves in this historic pick.
#BidenHarris2020
Very disappointed to see this event happening despite the hotel workers boycott. This is plain wrong. Thank you
@TonyThurmond
for honoring our boycott!
@clsba
Presented our bill which would levy a fine on any school district that bans a book in order to discriminate against students of color and/or LGBTQ plus students. Inclusive education promotes academic achievement and social development for students of all backgrounds.

Thank you CA Assoc of Latino Superintendents & Administrators for the award for leadership and equity. You support/prepare great school leaders. Proud to have secured $20 million to train bilingual educators & a $20,000 scholarship to recruit teachers & counselors.

investments!
Putting barriers to meals during a crisis is cruel, shameful and harms our students & families when they need us the most
@realDonaldTrump
. No child can learn if their basic needs aren’t met. Act now to make sure no kid goes hungry.
@USDA
The Trump administration is resisting calls to make it easy for tens of millions of students to get free meals at school this year, even as childhood hunger rates have risen to the highest levels in decades
History will show our students that until today the peaceful transfer of power has been a bedrock tradition in the nation every election since its founding. As we approach our next president's inauguration, I implore all Americans to move forward peacefully & respectfully. (3/4)
Great day with the site coordinators of the afterschool programs in our state. We are providing $4 Billion for expanded learning programs to support our students.
I’m proud to put forward a bold & balanced plan for

that builds on the strengths & experiences of CA's diverse classrooms & communities. Students want to be seen & our educators are asking for these tools. Our recommendations can be a model for the nation.
State Supt.
@TonyThurmond
announced CDE will release latest recs to

Model Curriculum today w/ expanded resources that reflect CA diversity, promote critical thinking and empower educators to lead courageous convos relevant to all students.
Despite our best efforts yesterday, the New Haven USD strike continues. I previously announced that I would return today but the district announced that talks will resume on Sunday. My team will remain involved & work with all parties for as long as it takes to get this resolved.
4/4 We’re building training programs 2 help our 10,000 schools address impacts of bias & race in schools & developing a 1st in nation state-wide ethnic studies model curriculum 4 districts 2 use as guide 4 conversations w/students about contributions by people of color in CA.
This summer I worked with civil rights icons to engage students in virtual

He spoke in a Berkeley church on a book tour years ago and shared stories of his experiences, struggles, and achievements. My children, and all of us, were gripped by his words and commanding presence. He was kind, funny, and personable. My children had so many questions. (2/4)
I am horrified by the violence at Tree of Life Synagogue today, a place for faith & family. My heart goes out to the families & victims. Hate has no place in our nation. Today & everyday we must reach out to our neighbors & work together to make our nation a safer place for all.
1/4 Join me in calling on
@realDonaldTrump
2 stop trying 2 divide the country & start working 2 unite it. Even now the POTUS is threatening to defund CA schools that choose to use curriculum that talks about the impacts of slavery & how it has contributed to racism in our nation.
It’s hard to imagine a more difficult year for teachers, yet it’s not surprising to see how they rose to extraordinary challenges for their students. Let's use this week as a reminder to thank the teachers who made a difference in our lives, and keep appreciating them year-round.
I am honored to be endorsed by
@RepMaxineWaters
, who has taken it upon herself to ensure that President Trump & Secretary DeVos & their anti-public education agenda do not become the new normal in American politics. We must reclaim our public schools & fight for all students.
“His deep, first-hand knowledge of students' needs set him above the rest.” Thank you
@latimes
for your endorsement. I’m fighting to give all of California’s students their brightest futures, just like public education gave me.
Heartbroken and angered that yet again, families and communities are mourning the loss of loved ones to senseless gun violence. Every student and educator deserves the right to feel safe at school.

I'm proud to be able to put resources directly in the hands of educators on the front lines of confronting racism, bigotry, & hate. By equipping our schools with tools to teach & promote tolerance, education can be the powerful path forward our society so desperately needs.
