Why, despite acknowledging the urgency of climate emergency, have universities yet to respond adequately to the crisis?
A short🧵
🚨Stop Scrolling!
Let's pause & reflect a minute about what this shocking picture of
@GretaThunberg
's arrest tells us about the current state of
#climate
politics.
A short 🧵on some key lessons we can take from this image
It is increasingly clear that there's now a concerted effort under way in parts of the British press to derail action on the
#ClimateEmergency
.
This🧵highlights key examples & shows how the main arguments are textbook
#ClimateDelay

The home secretary is confused, can you point out for her which of the following images is not 'serious disruption' ?
#ClimateEmergency
#EndFossilFuels
These unacceptable protests at Wimbledon were intended to ruin the day for the paying public.
Today I chaired talks
@10DowningStreet
with sporting, police & government teams to help tackle serious disruption of this kind
The KEY question, I'm asked by students when I guest lecture about the
#ClimateCrisis
is 'but what can we do?'
So I recently rewrote my materials to try & tackle that question head on. Feel free to adapt them.
Buckle up - here's a LONG thread🧵about how we can fight back!
1/ Here's a🧵on why the record shattering extremes in Europe are so unsettling for climate scientists.
It's increasingly looking that we've underestimated the impacts of
#ClimateBreakdown
...
BREAKING: Rome, Italy just experienced its highest temperature in recorded history with 42.9°C (109.2°F). This beats the previous record from 2022 by 2 full degrees Celsius.
That is a huge margin.
2/
What a difference 6 years makes!
In many ways climate politics is in a very different place to how it was when
@GretaThunberg
first started her strikes outside the Swedish parliament in the summer of 2018 to try and put the
#ClimateCrisis
on the agenda
15/ I've made my choice to stand by
@GretaThunberg
& all those who have listened to the science & are fighting for
#ClimateJustice
If you are looking for a way to be involved check out:
Saturday's actions were just the start of a new wave of activism💚✊
“Our study found that this type of civic engagement through collective action can have a direct effect on society, confirming that such action is warranted”
#climateac
3/ Largely as a result of protest movements
#climate
has now entered mainstream debate.
And the stakes are clearer than ever.
Following the latest
@IPCC_CH
report in 2022
@UN
Secretary General
@antonioguterres
made clear we are faced with a 🚨"Code Red for humanity"
10/ That such a reasonable and evidence based demand by peaceful protestors is met by such police brutality, should make clear to us all the lengths that governments will go to to try to cling to business as usual and to protect fossil fuel interests.
5/ The extent of the failure to address this threat by the current political elites is becoming ever more apparent.
The
@IPCC_CH
W3 report made clear that the majority of fossil fuel reserves must be left unburned :
“The government’s insane, and I don’t know what to do, other than to do this, to try and get the attention that we need to wake the public up.”
Ecologist Dr Aaron Thierry (

On Saturday I was one of 21 scientists arrested at
#COP26
taking part in a peaceful protest with
@ScientistRebel1
Here's a clip of a very wet ☔️ me explaining the reason I chose to take part in the action & why I hope other scientists will take to the streets with
@ExtinctionR
💚
11/ Leading experts warn that “It has become abundantly clear that governments don’t act on
#Climate
without pressure from civil society: threatening and silencing activists thus seems to be a new form of anti-democratic refusal to act on climate”
6/ Yet, governments are licensing and financing new fossil fuel projects!
With
@UNEP
warning that we are now on track to produce more than DOUBLE the amount of fossil fuels in 2030 than is compatible with the Paris agreement
#climate
targets
The new
@UNEP
2023 Production Gap Report reveals that governments plan to produce DOUBLE the fossil fuels in 2030 than the 1.5°C warming limit allows 🌡️ We need to tackle fossil fuel dependence now as the root cause of the
#ClimateCrisis
2030 is now 80 months away.
Each remaining month is 1.25% of the time we have left to reduce global emissions to 45% below to 2010 levels -which the IPCC say is necessary to stay below 1.5C
Currently, we're ~20% above 2010 levels & still headed in the wrong direction 😬
14/ We all now face a stark choice -
Either we can join and support the peaceful protestors to push for climate action and defend democracy.
Or we can allow governments to continue their destructive policies.
There is no neutral position. We have to pick a side.
1/ The penny is finally starting to drop that economists have catastrophicly underestimated the risk from
#ClimateBreakdown
.
Here's a🧵 of the latest reports that those working in finance urgently need to catch up on...
Starting with
@ChathamHouse
:
9/ It was to highlight our governments utter failure and object to the moral bankruptcy of their continued support for the polluting fossil fuel industry, that
@GretaThunberg
joined the hundreds of
@ExtinctionR
activists in the Hague yesterday.
A major international campaign against fossil subsidies has just been announced alongside the A12. 30 movements from 15 countries are now fighting for an end to European fossil subsidies under the name United for Climate Justice. [1/4]
13/ This has led
@UN
Special Rapporteur on Environmental Defenders
@ForstMichel
to warn that:
"The repression that environmental activists who use peaceful civil disobedience are currently facing in Europe is a major threat to democracy and human rights"
8/ Despite the
@IPCC
making plain in their reports that:
"Removing fossil fuel subsidies would reduce emissions, improve public revenue and macroeconomic performance, and yield other environmental and sustainable development benefits"
12/ And a huge effort, supported by fossil fuel interests, is now going into trying to vilify
#climate
protestors.
As made clear for example in this investigation by
@amywestervelt
and
@GeoffDembicki
I got the chills reading
@GeorgeMonbiot
's latest column on the draconian police powers of the new ‘Public Order Bill’.
But to understand how we got here we need to take a step back and look at the way these laws have been called into being. It's a wild story🤯

NOTHING.
We *cannot* address the
#ClimateCrisis
as individuals.
The crisis is a symptom of a system of social relations, and therefore we must cooperate to *collectively* change that form of social organization.
Unreal! Its 2022 & I'm still listening to
#LauraKuenssberg
framing today's debate as "can we afford to solve the

crisis?"
It feels like we're stuck in groundhog day for the past 20yrs!

Here's a🧵based on my slides about why the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy's letter is scientifically illiterate 1/n
The North Sea is vital to our energy security, so I will launch another licensing round later this year.
In return, I want oil and gas companies to reinvest their profits into the UK so we all feel the benefit - jobs, growth, new clean energy technology.
I think that’s fair.
Is climate change going to be worse than expected?
Have scientists been systematically underestimating the impacts?
And if so how should we as science communicators convey this to the public & policy makers?
I delve into this unsettling topic in this 🧵 1/n

We're taking steps to reduce our environmental impact on flights within Europe by recycling coffee cans and pads. Our coffee grounds are being processed in a digester, generating green energy. And that's not all! At the end of the process, we're left with nutrient-rich compost.…

Remember, whether you agree with their tactics or not, these activists are absolutely correct in their demands.
Biden should declare a climate emergency and halt all new fossil fuel developments.
Protesters smeared paint on the case and pedestal of Edgar Degas’s “Little Dancer Aged Fourteen” sculpture in the National Gallery of Art in D.C. to bring attention to the climate crisis and demand that President Biden declare a climate emergency.

A year later & governments are still failing
#COP27
So,
@BorisJohnson
has warned that unless leaders at

Unfortunately, yes, many leading climate scientists are indeed warning of collapse 1/n 🧵

Thanks to all who took part. I look forward to working together to grow our understanding of social movements can accelerate tipping points🧵1/n
3/ Luckily for us this is what humans excel at!
We all exist in thick social networks, as groups, communities, societies.
Cooperation, collaborating, creating and innovating together.
Humans have flourished because we are work in collectives and NOT as individuals

Another NOT GUITY verdict!
"...even when directed by the judge to find us guilty, they were able to understand that the unprecedented times in which we live calls for us all to step out of the box and make courageous decisions. Thank you jury.”
@IPCC_CH
6/ It’s vital that we reject this view!
Instead we must recognise that it’s only by taking action together that we can confront those political interests (e.g. fossil fuel industrialists & their financiers) that currently benefit from maintaining the catastrophic status quo.
I was on

Two days after the latest
#IPCCReport
, scientists around the world engage in a historic act of civil-disobedience in despair at continued government inaction on the climate and ecological emergency!
Over 1,000 scientists in over 25 countries worldwide took disruptive, non-violent actions and engaged in civil disobedience targeting governmental, scientific and corporate institutions to highlight the urgency and injustice of the climate and ecological crisis. 1/
Judge Robinson remarked on acquittal “I was impressed by the integrity and rationality of their beliefs” and “their evidence was highly moving.”

I'm forced to conclude that we are seeing is the *corporate capture* of our democracies.
