Nobody is saying this, but I will: This war will end in regime change - in Moscow. It won't be from an external military invasion into Russia. It will be mutiny and internal collapse that will bring Putin's regime down. It won't be overnight but it will happen.
Reminder that 43 percent of white Harvard freshmen in 2019 were athletes, legacies, families of donors or of staff (ALDS). 70% of those white applicants would not have been accepted if they were not ALDS. If the issue is fairness, there is your problem.
It's hard to comprehend the bravery of the US Marines who gave their lives in Kabul today. They were told days ago that they'd be targeted by ISIS-K bombers. They knew that. And, yet, they went ahead and did their duty, processing evacuations and winding down this terrible war.
Refusal to impeach Trump because the “Senate will acquit him anyway” is the same logic as McConnell refusing to put bills up for a vote “because the President won’t sign it.” It’s an abdication of Constitutional responsibility.
This is how one actually hacks an election. One doesn’t change the vote count. One alters the voter registration rolls so that when you present your ID to vote, your name is not there, or your address is wrong, etc. And then a huge line forms and hundreds of people don’t vote.
Rosenstein: "In a second, related conspiracy, Russian GRU officers hacked the website of a state election board and stole information about 500,000 voters. They also hacked into computers of a company that supplied software used to verify voter registration information."
OK, this is what is so colossally stupid about much political analysis. There are 3,979 Democratic delegates; the winner needs 1,991 for a majority. We've had 3 small-state caucus/primaries so far and we're talking about an inevitable nomination for the guy with 34 delegates?
It is obviously no longer possible for the world to interact with Putin like a normal political leader. China won't bail him out either. He stuck out his neck and thought he could crush Ukraine like he was Ivan the Terrible and leave the West divided. That's not happening.
Banning first-trimester abortions after they have been legal for 49 years is not "conservative." It is radical and extreme, and requires a massive expansion of government power to effectuate cultural change. This is why it is deeply unpopular too, and not just among liberals.
He has committed a war crime in Ukraine on the level of Saddam Hussein in Kuwait. There is just no walking that back. And people need to accept that reality. Whether he hangs on as long as Saddam did after 1991 or goes down much sooner, this won't end well for Putin.
Of course, he is 69 years old and might not last long anyway. But at some point the oligarchs that he brought inside the tent are not going find him useful any longer. And he has crossed every line that once marked him a "cunning" and "clever" leader.
The problem is that he will inflict enormous damage on Ukraine in the meantime. He declared war against the people of Ukraine and the entire global order, so he has very few safe avenues of retreat. And nobody is in a mood to give him an off-ramp. But he made his bed.
Again, this doesn't mean Putin won't be able to install a puppet regime in Kiev - for the time being, at least. He just won't be able to hold out against a guerrilla insurrection that will be well-supported by several Western nations.
When can private citizens sue others for being unvaccinated? Because if you don't think that will happen, you don't understand the law of unintended consequences.
But I was told the protestors would burn the courthouse down once the Feds left. Turns out, the protests died down when the agitators - the Feds - left. It's almost like Trump was the chaos agent.
CDC’s unsubstantiated claim that vaccinated people transmit as much as unvaccinated people will go down as one of the worst unforced errors of the pandemic - possibly as bad as the J&J pause. Sabotaged the vaccine and their own credibility…to bolster case for masking the vaxxed.
Oh, one last thought: People need to become familiar with Viktor Medvedchuk. He is Putin's main man in Ukraine. He was put under house arrest in May 2021 for funding the Donbass rebels and for corruption. That was what pushed Putin to begin his troop buildup.
For all the talk of Biden v. Buttigieg in the "moderate" lane, maybe people should look at the candidate who has won statewide (including rural areas), passed more bills than anybody else, is younger than 70, can explain her positions, and can relate to people: Amy Klobuchar.
I am a center-left Democrat. I support vaccination and I oppose mask/distance mandates. I am not alone. It's time for other Dem leaders to join Colorado Gov. Polis in advocating for a reasoned approach to covid that makes epidemiological, economic and, yes, political sense.
@Acyn
LOL - It's in the 20th Amendment that it is held on January 20th. The only thing that can alter it is a death of the President-elect, and then the VP-elect becomes President. If there is an ongoing dispute over Pres-elect, Speaker Pelosi becomes President.
After one of my
@CNN
appearances, one of the anchors asked me off-air why I had confidence in Ukraine's army to push back agains the illegal Russian military onslaught.
I used a bit of "battlefield math" to explain my rationale. 1/16
@PeterAlexander
If Hutchinson's story is wrong, she goes to prison for lying to Congress. I doubt she made it up (or that the Committee didn't already know what she said). Unless somebody else backs his up, I think Peter Alexander is getting played.
More black voters over the age of 65 have already voted in Georgia (201,889) than voted in total in the 2016 presidential election (193,993). There are still 9 days of voting remaining.
@brooklynmutt
I mean, there IS a complicated story about Nancy Green and how she made and used her wealth. But the presentation of the image was absolutely derogatory and this Turning Point person does not get it all. She was a figure of minstrelsy.
At a minimum, Russia must be expelled from SWIFT, every Russian oligarch's assets in the West should be seized, and Russia's diplomatic delegation expelled. And that should happen starting tomorrow. Russia is as much a rogue nation as Saddam Hussein's Iraq in August 1990.
So there are four problems for Trump with the tax story:
1) Shows he was a failed businessmen
2) He paid less taxes than most regular people
3) He's in HUGE debt to somebody and we don't know who
4) DA Cy Vance has his taxes and Deutsche bank records and can nail him for fraud
Pro-Tip: Criticizing Amy Coney Barrett's judicial philosophy and view of the ACA & Roe is perfectly legitimate and necessary. Attacking her religious faith, referencing "Handmaid's Tale" or mocking her for having 7 children (I have 5 kids BTW...) is absolutely NOT acceptable.
This is really bad, and is now confirmed. Egypt warned Bibi about the Hamas threat in Gaza and he ignored it, focusing instead on the West Bank settlements for IDF. There will be a reckoning about this and the longer project of coddling Hamas to “divide the Palestinians.”
Israeli media reports now confirm that the government did receive clear warnings from Egyptian intelligence about the imminent attack that occurred on October 7.
Initially, the Prime Minister's office issued a flat denial after the first report, but then they reversed their…
@PeterAlexander
For people who want to believe Peter Alexander's anonymous source, note that Ornato and Engel have already testified under oath. I doubt today was the first time they've heard this information.
@joshtpm
If he’s gonna play the extortion game, New York City should seize and condemn Trump Tower and tell him they’ll release the property if Trump provides aid for the state.
Hot take: The number one driver of 21st century “populism” in the West is boredom. Not economic discontent. Not cultural upheaval. Not corruption. Just plain boredom. That’s why it fixates on performance but never really changes much of anything.
One of the most illuminating things I've ever read about support for Trump is this 2023 paper that coined the idea of "Need For Chaos" in politics.
High income country +
Status anxious group +
Demand for political-media entertainment +
Social media dynamics =
"Need For Chaos"
There's no excuse at this point in the pandemic to report covid hospitalizations without indicating how many are incidental positives. This is especially true for children. That data exists. Hospitals know if patients are admitted for covid-symptoms or simply testing+ once there.
@brooklynmutt
There were several black actors and actresses who participated in minstrel performances alongside whites who wore blackface. The purpose was to entertain white audiences at black expense. And the black mammy was a stock character in minstrel performances.
RIP my mentions but...what exactly is particularly controversial or troublesome about Elon Musk? (Other than his wealth). Is it his actual plans for Twitter (which I don't think anybody really knows yet)? Or is it something about him otherwise?
Imagine if a Dem Governor in, say, Pennsylvania, ordered all polling places in rural counties closed (for "cost") and told people that if they wanted to vote they had to drive to Philadelphia, Harrisburg, Erie, Allentown, Scranton or Pittsburgh - and stand on line there.
BREAKING: In what will surely spark a Texas election controversy, Gov Greg Abbott is ordering counties to only operate one mail-in ballot drop-off location. Harris County had opened nearly a dozen drop sites in a county that's larger than Rhode Island. More details to come..
Monica Palmer needs to be sanctioned and removed from the Wayne County Board of Canvassers. Mike Hartmann too. Those two should never be allowed anywhere near an election again.
If you aren’t trusting the evidence out of South Africa about how Omicron behaves, you should really ask yourself why. South African scientists identified Omicron. SA doctors are treating Omi patients. SA health researchers are compiling and reporting data transparently.
The

reason to major in history is to learn how to think historically. That means recognizing change over time, identifying patterns, interrogating sources, writing critically, independent research, understanding cultures. These are essential to ANY job and to citizenship.
@jbendery
Um, in that America, black men like Mark Robinson could not vote in the state of North Carolina either. Does he want to go back to that time?
You can argue that Affirmative Action is also unfair to Asian Americans (and non-ALDS white applicants). But if you are going to jettison race conscious admissions policies because they are unfair, you really need to target the much bigger problem of white ALDS admits.
Trump agreeing to do this Town Hall may end being more costly than agreeing to those Bob Woodward interviews. His blatant lies are facing pushback from regular people in real time.
@kylegriffin1
The UNHCR and Doctors Without Borders need to be brought in to monitor these refugee camps, just as they must do elsewhere around the world when the host country is unable and/or unwilling to maintain a hygienic facility.
Top 5 most underrated cities in the US:
1. Houston
2. Cincinnati
3. Tampa
4. Knoxville
5. Louisville
Honorable mention: Borough of Queens, NY.
This is based on personal experience. Yours?
@kaitlancollins
If he wins the appeal he gets those assets returned. But he has to post those assets as bond while appealing. That's the law. Does he think he should be given special treatment?
Under-reported: Kentucky voters made Kentucky a pro-choice state on abortion, which also matters enormously to surrounding trigger law/anti-abortion states like TN, WV, OH, IN and MO. Amazing what happens when it is put up for direct popular referendum...
So the Hamas attack wasn't a bunch of random Gazans gone rogue (as Hamas's cowardly spokesman suggested) and it wasn't just a small operation that got out of control. It was a pre-planned massacre. Hamas should never have been allowed to fester for decades.
BREAKING: Hamas intentionally targeted elementary schools in Israel, instructed terrorists to seize hostages, move them into Gaza, and to "kill as many people as possible," maps and documents recovered from the bodies of attackers show.
Quite a tease by Ken Vogel here. He said there was "more to the story" the other day. Trump got excited and forwarded it. So here it is. And...it confirms that the Bidens did nothing wrong in Ukraine.
@tedhesson
Considering where the virus is strongest at the moment, I'd think Mexico would be imposing entry restrictions on Americans and not the other way around. Restrictions on Italy and South Korea make sense at least.
@ShiraGlenora
@ProfessaJay
Now ask yourself if you would have been followed if you weren't carrying a big bag. Because black people can't "change out of their skin color" to avoid this harassment.
This is the kind of pathetic dishonesty that passes for "media criticism" on the Right. The article in question is about military bases named for Confederate generals who actively promoted the Ku Klux Klan. To say it calls the military Klansmen is unconscionably stupid.
On this Memorial Day, we give thanks to the heroic men & women who bravely fought and gave their lives to protect the NYT’s right to call the military Klansmen.
1. Qualitative fit test report on a surgical mask. Outcome: abject failure. The test failed within 5 seconds of a 7-minute OSHA fit test protocol (3M FT-10). In fact, it failed faster than I could start the timer. A record
So the vast majority of Americans say that Hamas is "mostly responsible for any civilian casualties in the Gaza Strip." 63% blame Hamas and only 13% blame Israel. At least a plurality blames Hamas in every demo. This is why there is no real push for a ceasefire in the US.
@chrislhayes
"Trump Derangement Syndrome" (TDS) really applies to people who have so lost their minds and their souls that they make every possible excuse for Trump's behavior despite everything they supposedly knew and valued.
@NPR
Narrator: It doesn't actually send any message. We've got one in Tennessee too. Ours is a fundraiser for a state park that interprets the Overmountain Men who gathered at Sycamore Shoals before the Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780.
Whatever the final results may be, it is time to declare the pandemic effectively over. Child vaccinations are now authorized. Boosters are available to anybody who wants them. There is no justification for any continued mandated NPIs. Not in blue, purple or red localities.
News flash: Joe Biden is winning big right now because he's actually running a good campaign. Hard to imagine, I know, because he doesn't speak eloquently or hold big rallies. But he speaks to the times in a language of empathy that people want and need right now.
Biden did something important today. He offered a long soliloquy to the *emotional* hardship of social distancing, casting it as grueling from a human perspective.
That's a good contrast with Trump -- another sign he's running a good campaign.
New piece:
One state had a mask mandate and one state didn't. Omicron transmission pattern was the same. Vax+booster may have made a difference in mortality rates for elderly (need more age-stratified data to say for sure). But if masks are supposed to curb infection we'd see it here.
First, let's compare how they did on infections during Omicron surge
Strikingly similar (see graph)
Florida peaked earlier, California a bit later
Cumulatively, they had nearly identical infection rates
About 9.50% of Floridians got infected while 9.54% of Californians did
Again, it's amazing how almost nobody who ever worked for Trump says anything good about him. I can't think of any other major political leader who has left his former underlings so universally unimpressed with their old boss.
Former Trump Administration Defense Secretary Mark Esper: I never felt that Trump understood the importance and virtue of military service of committing yourself to service in uniform to defend your country. It’s just not something he appreciated
Hospitals across the South are filled with unvaccinated covid patients who fell victim to nihilist anti-vax grifters like Alex Berenson. He's not a martyr. He didn't ask hard questions. He didn't speak to truth to power. He just lied, repeatedly. Good riddance.
This is why trying to attack the whistleblower is so dumb. There are lots more. Patriotic civil servants keep witnessing corrupt actions by the President. The New York Times
Migrants and local high school AP Spanish students, who have been dismissed from school to help interpret, play a ball game in the Parish House parking lot to pass the time.
Also, ALDS applicants get a leg up not just because they happen to be ALDS. They also take advantage of holistic admissions by being able to name-drop these ALDS references with their alumni interviewers and in their college essays.
@TheAtlantic
@davidfrum
The real villain her (other than Trump himself) is Congress. They actually have Constitutional authority to hold this President accountable. They could hold investigations into Trump's conduct in office. Instead, they have run interference for Trump.
@GStephanopoulos
Every time I think impeachment is not the politically wise thing to do, Trump does something to make impeachment absolutely necessary, regardless of the politics. This man is simply unfit to hold the Presidency for one more day.
California now monitors covid cases by vax status. I find it baffling that people claim vaccines do nothing to stop transmission when you cannot transmit when you are not infected. Even accounting for different likelihood to test, the pattern is clear.
@samstein
It shows GOP Senators to be behaving just as Zelensky did when sitting on stage next to Trump and being asked if he was unduly pressured. Nobody wants to admit publicly they are being extorted by Donald Trump.
I still think people miss what was so significant about the January 6 riot. It wasn't just the violence or location. It was the timing, designed to disrupt the official counting of Electoral Votes. That's why it's important every participant be prosecuted and Trumpism eradicated.
How does a former law clerk state such an utter falsehood like this? I mean, no, the PRA specifically says the records in question do NOT belong to the President personally and he cannot have them after leaving office.
Because those are his presidential records.
He received them as the President.
He's allowed to have them under the Presidential Records Act.
Classified or not.
Congress can amend the PRA, if it doesn't want former presidents to have their presidential records.
As we await the returns in Virginia, there is one key issue that worked to Youngkin's advantage re: schools and it is NOT "critical race theory." It's the fact that many districts, including Fairfax County Public Schools, remained shut down for the entirety of 2020-21.
The covid conundrum is pretty clear: Do you think there is anything that can be done at mass scale to control the spread of Omicron? I think it's clear, given the extreme spread throughout the world, that you can't. So the next step should be to stop pretending that we can.
Joe Biden was referencing his lifelong stuttering problem and how kids with stutters reach out to him. And this ghoul comes out of nowhere and pokes fun of him? This is pretty much the core essence of Trumpism.
Why is Philadelphia rejecting CDC guidance on mask mandates? Not only is it in the "Low" community level category, it is nowhere near the "Medium," not to mention "High" level, which triggers mask mandates per CDC. This is how you destroy faith in public health.
Nevada is a portent of a possible Bernie path to victory but not a determinant. It showed Bernie's strength among Latinos, for example. But not much else. South Carolina looks completely different. And so does every Super Tuesday state.
I'm the thrice vaccinated dude inside the restaurant living a normal life, glancing out the window, and wondering who you are trying to impress or shame.
@BostonGlobe
Equity backfire again. FFS, you don’t make things more “equitable” by eliminating advanced course options. You work to raise those who are struggling and/or come from disadvantaged backgrounds.
