Guillermo Del Toro: “There are 2 pieces of language that entered our lexicon around 5, 6 years ago that are horrible: ‘content’ & ‘pipeline,’ which are to describe oil, water or sewage. Whatever it is, they don’t describe art & cinema, because....
they talk about an impermanence, something that we just flush through, and has to keep moving. And in my world, a beautiful work of audiovisual storytelling should hold its place next to a novel or a painting.”
Cinema is an empathy machine; we need that now more than ever.
The more your work captures that unique ability to help us walk in another's shoes, the more it is going to resonate with audiences.
A filmmaker friend just reminded me of something several of our filmmaker idols have recommended:
when making your first feature tell the story only you can tell & tell it in the way you want (ie. don't let others tell you how to do it). You may never get that chance again!
Personally speaking, I think the saddest thing about present day cinema culture, is the ever-growing percentage of people who would rather watch something new versus something old.
If people cared about quality, they'd be happier watching all the greats from yesteryear.
How to have a fulfilling career in the film business?
Work harder than is expected of you and be nice to people. Generosity & a thirst for knowledge help too. A quest to refine the transformative power of art & storytelling can be a real asset also.
What else?
There are no films directed by women on the AFI's Top 100 Films Of All Time List.
As these lists are not fact, but fairly arbitrary, isn't it time AFI addressed this? People use such lists for "required viewing". AFI should "require" a broader spectrum.
“A person who has not made his great contribution to science before the age of 30 will never do so.” -- Einstein
I am confident this is not true about cinema. We might even want to slow down the process as I think best work will come from those who have lived & contemplated life.
Film Producers!
You know how you always print the address of the local hospital on the call sheet?
There should always be a sexual harassment helpline number on the call sheet too.
If you are/were a 1st or 2nd time feature filmmaker or one who hasn’t made one in 5 years, & you could make a $1M one where your upside was limited because every director was paid same & excess profits funded the sustainability of the program, would you sign up?
#Asking4AFriend
A director knows the difference between the film they want to make, plan to make, are making on set, making in the edit room, and then that they have actually made -- and that they are generally five different things.
@thumbelulu
When you read the books about it, it is clear that ALL the companies had policies on cover up, but few truly had policies to help the victims.
I am very optimistic that there will be a new counter culture emerging in response to corporate blandness. the biz has hurt itself & missed opportunity. Next will be early 90's-ish: indie filmmaking will be driven purely by love. To do bold work will require a very modest life.
Last day at Amazon Studios. What a privilege to work on so many good movies with so many good people. Everything is so much more than a village. We are in all of this together forever.
I am surprised by how rare it is for a writer, producer, or director to come into a script meeting and tell me what they want to do. Instead they want the studio to give the notes. Seems backwards to me. If they did speak first & declare, the conversation would be better.
Filmmaking Is About Things Going Wrong
We prepare ourselves to do a good job, but the real job is dealing with all the stuff that is done wrong or doesn’t go right. Fixing things & moving forward is the daily truth of filmmaking.
What if all Film Directors had to work on other filmmakers' films? What if in order to direct a feature you had to demonstrate you could first collaborate well in some way other than directing? What if producers had to do the same thing? Would it lead to better films?
I appreciate all the patience

December 13!
You come in for a pitch, I want to hear HOW you are going to tell the story, not just the story you are going to tell.
I also want to know why YOU need to tell THIS story & why this story should be told in the way that you want to tell it.
What more do you want me to understand?
More than 20 countries, including the UK, France, Mexico, Canada & Finland, committed to ending their use of coal before 2030.
Can't America do the same thing? Do we need to start at the municipal or state level in the US?

We need an ALTERNATIVE to Hollywood that is not cruel and evil.
Doesn't THIS quote make you sick?
“The endgame is to allow things to drag on until union members start losing their apartments and losing their houses”
I am so impressed by those who remain positive, generous, compassionate, and appreciative throughout the filmmaking process.
It is so hard and not easy. But we need more of these folks!
What's killing
#indiefilm
?
a) collapse of the internatnl sales + equity financing (due to global streaming);
b) lack of available "financeable" cast (they all have 17 offers of "go" series);
c) lack of a steady flow of theatrical 1st films;
d) filmmkrs inability to earn living?
If you haven't read this article, please do so now. It's going to get a lot hotter than we've been told, and with it will come disaster. There are things we can do.
It's time for a 4 day work week in America (and paid family leave, paid sick leave, and mandatory 4 week minimum paid vacation).

What is YOUR definition for what a
#Producer
does?
Currently, mine is:
Lift the good into great, be they projects, people/collaborators, processes, or entire ecosystems.
Many people have good ideas. Few people actually execute them.
When you are starting out, you don’t even need good ideas as much as you need to learn how to get things done.
Getting things done builds a process and processes help build good ideas.
Packed up and said goodbye to my old office at Amazon Studios in Culver today... 5.5 years.... think that 5x longer than the Indiewire betting pool had me down for!
Here’s a problem for film industry to solve:
Positive festival reception remains the best driver (and virtually only path) of indie acquisitions but festival acceptance for indie films grows forever more challenging due to the volume of corporate studio/streamer titles competing.
What ever happened to WEIRD?
Weird is one of my favorite creative choices. It seems to be in very short supply these days, and I wonder why.
Please bring on the WEIRD once again to the cinema screen.
To date, 3 of the top 5 highest-grossing movies from Sundance 2018 are documentaries:
1.) HEREDITARY ($43.6MM DBO)
2.) WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR ($19.3MM DBO)
3.) RBG ($13.2MM DBO)
4.) SORRY TO BOTHER YOU ($12.3MM DBO)
5.) THREE IDENTICAL STRANEGRS ($5.5MM DBO)
Currently in USA it is virtually impossible to commit to creative industries unless you are rich, privileged, have the security of a significant side hustle, or somehow have figured how to stay out of debt & keep overhead low (i.e. no significant loans/ don’t live in NYC or LA).
May I offer some filmmakers a bit of advice?
Have your next project ready (packaged, complete w visual materials, budget, schedule, etc) before you are finished with your current one.
Hey Producers! Time to rise!
"Essentially Hollywd will be putting more & more trust in producers — you may even say it’s going more indie — + don’t be surprised to see many ex-agents forming partnerships w/ creative producers to form these new companies."
After 30+ years of producing/financing/supervising movies, I finally know how to answer that question
"What kind of movies do you want to produce?"
Me: "Ambitiously Authored".

or Studio, English-language or not, films w distinct cinematic perspectives.
It is so exciting to watch these two truly unleashing their talent. They didn't get trapped by giant franchises, but emerged with new understanding of what matters and how best to develop it. Lean into the love...
"I look back on my life and it’s 95 percent running around trying to raise money to make movies and five percent actually making them. It’s no way to live.” –Orson Welles
Not to judge or anything, but in reading scripts you get a quick reveal of a writer’s respect for people in general. The obvious set up, the lack of nuance, characters that are no more than a plot device — these lead me to suspect the author of not caring for others...
In my private paradise, Sandler wins for Best Actor.
Along with PARASITE and THE LIGHTHOUSE, I predict UNCUT GEMS will prove to be the films from 2019 that have the most influence on where film culture goes.
And I totally dig this interview:
no offense to all the great writers, but...
one of the flaws of cinema today
(and just reminded to me by a w/d) is:
people shoot the script instead of directing the movie.
Re: Script Length
35 years ago, I got 1st gig as a script analyst. I have read >5000 "professional" scripts now.
The scripts <115pgs generally show the reader more respect -- having tightened & honed, paid off the structure, & tightened themes -- than the longer ones do.
You are a director.
You are reading a script.
Do you accept the images as written or only for their intent?
When reading material, do you read with an eye to what it can become, or just what it is?
Best film festival advice I ever got?
Never shake hands with people; fist bump instead.
@sundancefest

“My movie is born first in my head, dies on paper; is resuscitated by the living persons and real objects I use, which are killed on film but, placed in a certain order and projected onto a screen, come to life again like flowers in water.”
-- Robert Bresson
So much of the reality of filmmaking is about making a ton of good decisions rapidly and consistently throughout the day.
What can you do to prepare yourself for this onslaught?
Time & time again, I am reminded how important it is to find the enthusiasts to collaborate with. Finding those that get visibly excited by ideas & good work is such a gift.
Enthusiasm is contagious & lifts people to do their best work.
Let's say you were guaranteed you would be shooting your first or 2nd feature in 9 months w $1M budget & creative control.
What would you do to train to make sure you were in shape for it, physically, mentally, emotionally, politically, team, skill & talent wise?
Wondering... what movies best show how we have to work together to get something done? You know, the opposite of a single hero’s journey, but a collective effort?
“I really believe in the liberating & humanizing power of cinema. I believe that images & ideas that are carried by stories can have the power to strike you in your solar plexus, & really change your mind…The world is ending, & we’re watching beautiful films.” - A.G. Iñárritu
I am really proud that in my last year at Amazon Studios, our team was able to get behind & truly support so many emerging directors . Newcomers w bold voices!
This year so far: 5 films -- All new directors. All global releases. All well reviewed. MANY more to come!
It is ironic than Independent Cinema has never been what it calls itself: independent. We have always been dependent -- dependent on the mainstream cultural manufacturing, marketing, and distribution system. But they f’d us, beat us, & robbed us. And now they are doubling down.

WHAT SHOULD WE DO NOW TO IMPROVE FILM CULTURE, FILMMAKING, & FILMBIZ?
If only it was as simple as: Make (or finance or distribute) Better Movies.
Do you have any concrete ideas about what the community can do?
Sometimes it seems like filmmakers are so excited that they got the pitch meeting that they forgot why they are there in the first place.
Remember: if you are well prepared & demonstrate you are a good human, you might leave with funding for your movie!
I think one of the reasons I prefer films to series is cinema's compressed timeline not only emphasizes structure but also allows the theme to resonate further.
Control is a myth. The pursuit of it is a fetish. The compulsion to exert it is a corruption. Freedom is the abandonment of control. Learn how to lead with out demanding control is a worth goal.
The role of the producer & director is to consistently withstand t pain of rejection.
100 doors close b4 you find a window to crawl through — & that is just not once, but 1000s of times on each film & then everyone thinks it’s easy to get it made & why didn’t you make it better?
Tomorrow I begin a cross country odyssey with my son. Nice that the two sages that have accompanied so often through life — Bob Dylan & Neil Young — just released albums to carry us — or at least me! — across this long road. Thanks for the gifts!

and there is still more to come! How would you account for this?
Movies disappear. They fall out of circulation. Rights holders vanish. Gone forever? Or not? Know what you can do. The time to save cinema starts with your own work.

Who are the cinematographers who are ready for their big opportunity? Who are the ones ready for their first $40M+ feature & why? Why do you love their work?
