I-794 IS A GLORIFIED HIGHWAY SPUR THAT SEVERS THE 3RD WARD FROM DOWNTOWN & HAS NEVER SEEN THE TRAFFIC IT WAS DESIGNED FOR. INSTEAD OF REMOVING IT, WISDOT PLANS TO SPEND $300 MILLION TO REPLACE IT. THIS IS FOOLISH GIVEN THE LAST TIME A SPUR WAS DEMOLISHED WE GOT THE DEER DISTRICT.
๐ Huge news today for our campaign ๐
"Interstate 794 should eventually be torn down and replaced with new private developments, surface level streets and public spaces, according to the city of Milwaukeeโs proposed long-range downtown plan."
As our campaign has grown, its been truly inspiring to see all the community excitement that Rethinking 794 has generated. This latest removal design from John Everitt and Greg Walthers is something to behold!
Today is the day! If you can spare 30 minutes, pop-in, let the city know your thoughts. We need to show that the public supports rethinking 794.

For what it's worth, none of the people who started and actively run this campaign are developers. We will not gain a single penny if it is taken down. We just genuinely believe that removing 794 is the best for Milwaukee.
@IsaacRowlett
Architects, developers, brokers and commercial real estate pros still talking the loudest as they have the most to profit from this. Business owners not so interested as 77,000 cars every day will try to get downtown and to the lake via side-streets
This looks busy because cars use a lot of space, but I count, at most, 30 vehicles traveling downtown at the absolute busiest moment our opposition could muster. A reconnected grid could easily handle this...

"I will grant that opening 32.5 acres of prime downtown real estate would be an economic boon to someone, but it certainly wonโt be you or me."
If it was affordable housing, green space, maybe a grocery store, it would benefit everyone. These are real options.
Itโs turned into a lightning rod issue in Milwaukee: What should be done with the I-794 lake interchange heading through the heart of the city?
On Tuesday, we got our first look at a study that shows where traffic would be diverted if it is torn down.
Thank you to everyone who showed up and spoke out these last two days in favor of the removal option. ๐ซก We will let you know the next opportunity to engage. In the meantime, enjoy WisDOT's 3D renderings.

"I support a reconfiguration of Interstate 794 in downtown Milwaukee,โ said Mayor Johnson during his inauguration speech Tuesday morning at City Hall. โIt offers a chance to maximize growth and maximize investment while keeping transportation connectivity here in the city.โ
We want to bring as many people along with our coalition as possible...but if a highway in the downtown of another city is your "lifeblood," you have bigger problems than this project.
You know our campaign has arrived when those who benefit from the status quo are upset. Let's keep up the great work and build a better downtown Milwaukee!
Rumor on the street is that 794 public meetings have been delayed until Fall 2024.
This means six more months of posts...please help keep the drumbeat alive between then and now!
"As a planner in Milwaukee for 50 years, I believe replacing I-794 can give us a nationally acclaimed downtown. We can mitigate negative impacts for commuters, make a better journey-to-work, develop high value places to live, and grow business opportunities." - Larry Witzling
Visiting Seoul and the Cheonggyecheon highway removal project is even more impressive in-person. If a city of 10M people can achieve this, it should be easy for Milwaukee.

Just got off a call with WisDOT. Was promised that a boulevard concept for 794 will get a fair shot, but let's work to ensure it does. Public meetings starting in December.

When you unintentionally make a great argument for rethinking downtown highways...Let's turn this into a boulevard and reconnect our downtown to the lake!
#NoMore794
Duluthโs waterfront is nice, but we could legitimately have the greatest waterfront on the greatest of the Great Lakes.
Instead we have an overbuilt and underutilized freeway.
The superior option is clear. Donโt settle for less - this city deserves great things.

Tonight, we are speaking at the Downtown Neighborhood Association annual meeting. Taylor Korslin, our volunteer architect, will be making a pitch for a boulevard and we will be sticking around for questions!
The grid already handles the vast majority of this traffic. 794 doesn't drop anyone off directly at their destination, so a majority of these drivers already use the downtown grid at some point. Why not make that entrance point 6th street rather than the lakefront.
Can we start tearing the freeway down today? I can meet you down there at 3:30 with hammers. This shouldn't even be a debate in Milwaukee. Get to it. (or go back to a rotary phone & open a Blockbuster Video)
@teardown794
The $300 million
@WisconsinDOT
plans to spend on I-794 could have a transformative effect on Milwaukee. This underutilized highway sits on land valued at $1.1 billion thatโs also the missing link between bike paths that stretch across Milwaukee. This is why we must rethink I-794!
In the Denver metro area, they're dropping plans for highway expansions and shifting $900 million in funds toward public transit, pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure.
Tearing down Interstate 794 would open land for new development and remove a barrier between downtown and the Third Ward, but stakeholders also warned it could create traffic bottlenecks that would deter people or companies.
Your conversations and your engagement have made this a better project for Milwaukee regardless of what alternative is selected. Let's keep it up, let your elected officials know you support the boulevard alternative.

"He would also like to create more affordable housing options, which has been a goal for the city, and state, in recent years."
Affordable housing on 794's old footprint would help achieve that goal and make the boulevard project more competitive for federal grants.

People will argue that "that ship has sailed," when it comes to I-794. We would argue that Milwaukee shouldn't fall for the sunk cost fallacy. I-794 is a destructive and underutilized highway. Incremental change is short-sighted.

Show up and support Rethinking 794 in the Downtown Plan update. We need to show City staff that a ton of people are behind the movement.
Here are some of the key findings from freeway removal projects bearing the most similarity to a potential freeway conversion in Duluth. In each case, new investment outweighed project costs, sometimes by considerable margins.

There is still a ton of work to be done. We have to find solutions to the lift bridge crossing the river and how to navigate the street car station, but solutions can be found.
We were told three seperate times on the I-94 project that something was impossible that later become possible (Smaller stadium interchange, Stadium Freeway as a boulevard, transit funding). If WisDOT wants to find a solution, they will find one.
