Delighted to announce that I have been promoted to CNN's Senior Editor for Africa. It's been 6 years living in Lagos, creating a new bureau, editing, and creating impactful content. Looking forward to doing much more and changing the African narrative along the way...
I am being tagged on the most atrocious videos of police brutality from the protests. It is evident that there is no intention to change the status quo. I am investigating and trying to get the story out there. Keep sharing them. My DM is open. Stay safe
#SARSMUSTENDNOW
I was supposed to be on
@questCNN
yesterday talking
#SARSMUSTEND
but that crazy storm last night blew out our connection and we couldn’t go live. We’ll be back. Keep sending your stories. I am reading the DMs. See you at the protest.
There's a video that I can't get out of my mind. Someone is filming police rounding up young boys in Ogbomosho. They mentioned the name Akeju. Only to see now the name Akeju among the names of the dead. Is this the same person? How did he die when he was arrested alive? DM me.
I am being tagged on reports that armed men took people away from their homes overnight in Lagos. Please DM if you have more info. Only DM if you have concrete information, not from WhatsApp or others on this app. Thank you.
Does Nigeria have a missing person's register? The stories in my DM are frightening and harrowing. People have been through so much. The resilience and the capacity to pick up the pieces is both inspiring and heartbreaking.
Police are clamping down heavily on the few protesters that turned up. We saw some beaten with sticks and their posters confiscated. One young man who said he was an observer was taken away in a Black Maria.
#Lekkitollgate
I was at the
#EndSARS
Lagos protests today. People looked out for each other and handed out food and water. Police were around and mostly kept away from the crowd. Sadly not the case in Ogbomosho, Abeokuta & Abuja with arrests, one person dead and teargas and live rounds used.
Please don’t just send me someone else’s tweets. Send me information from where you are, if it safe to do so. Or later on, once you get to safety. I need to verify information and copyright before I can work on any stories. Thank you. Be safe
#EndPoliceBrutalityinNigeria
I'm hearing from some employers who have closed and told their staff to join the protests. It is clear that many people want change, even if they cannot participate themselves. Also hearing from a lot of older Nigerians who are cheering on the young people driving this movement.
Just thought of a story we covered recently, Nigeria sent students abroad on audio scholarships from NDDC, leaving them broke and homeless in a cold, foreign land. I felt anger well up inside me all over again. The rot is EVERYWHERE!
#EndSARS
Hundreds of people arrested off the streets, denied calls to their families, no legal counsel, paraded to the media as suspects. This is not the policing reforms that Nigerians demanded.
Standoff at VGC where
@inecnigeria
has changed their polling unit overnight. Around 6000 residents are waiting to vote in their assigned station inside. But INEC officials are waiting outside. Now EFCC are here.
Many of the people say they don’t know why they are being arrested. Some say they are passersby. None of the police can tell us why they are being arrested and what the grounds are for arrest.
#Lekkitollgate
In most places, the Inspector General of Police would have resigned by now. Or at least been relieved of his position. From the shooting at protesters in Jos yesterday to police doing nothing about armed youth in Alausa yesterday, the impunity is breathtaking.
@StephanieBusari
I'm tired of seeing messages that SARS are still ambushing people in lonely places, checking their phones for
#EndSARS
#EndSWAT
images & shooting them, for God's sake, what is a disbanded unit still doing with firearms?!!😡😡😡😡 Pls can we start a trend of
#WithdrawSARSfirearms
The irony of African leaders so quick to congratulate
@JoeBiden
and praise a democratic process that they completely ignore at home. Is it that Africans don’t deserve to have their voices heard in the same way?
Democracy is not a buffet that you can pick and choose from.
More arrests of suspected protesters who are taken into the Black Maria, which has now been moved away from where the media is gathered. We managed to speak to a young man Damilola Adelare, 24, who said “he was exercising his human right to protest.”
I have spent the past hour along with my colleague
@eoin9411
speaking to eyewitnesses to piece together what happened tonight. They told us that the protesters were barricaded on both sides of the toll gate and fired on.
Full report here
#EndSARS
Isn't it wild that food that was supposed to be shared among the poorest Nigerians during the lockdown was left rotting in warehouses across the country? So far I have counted Lagos, Ilorin, Jos, where else? The level of impunity across the board is staggering.
Jos, Plateau State. The people have discovered a warehouse where COVID-19 Palliatives, that were meant to be shared to the public, were still being stored
Chadwick Boseman will never know how much we loved him. Battling colon cancer, shooting films in b/w bouts of chemo and surgery. What amazing strength.
He once said: “The struggles along the way are only meant to shape you for your purpose.”
Rest on King. Long live T’challa!
We are hearing a lot of words but no action. Armed youths rampaging streets of Alausa, seat of political power in Lagos. Police shooting at protesters in Jos. Lots of people saying they are still being extorted by SARS. IGP Adamu needs to act now.
I am so saddened at the levels of impunity and the abuse of human rights going on across Nigeria right now. We will keep reporting and highlighting them to the world. Journalism is not a crime. Protesting is not a crime.
Tosin has just been transferred to Suleja Prison.

We have noticed the removal of CCTV cameras around Lekki toll gate & other legitimate protest areas, & we applaud the stupidity of those behind this move. Please note that we have eyes in the skies, & the world is watching in real time. "Your move"
@StephanieBusari
#EndSARS
This morning I was live on
@cnni
with
@rosemaryCNN
to talk about the ongoing
#endsars
protest, and why the dissolution of SARS is not the end of the fight to end police brutality.
#SARSMUSTEND
I'm receiving many lovely messages on my reporting on End SARS. I thank you all. I faced so much abuse and it did take a toll on my mental health at times but fact-based journalism is important now more than ever. We chronicle for posterity so people NEVER FORGET.
#Lekkitollgate
What wonders will we not see from this astonishing movement? If these are tomorrow's leaders of Nigeria, the country will be in great shape. Decisive action, financial accountability, compassionate leadership. They have it in spades.
#EndPoliceBrutality
This is epic. Someone DMd me saying he recognised one of the SARS officers in Surulere. He said “he has extorted me before.” He said there is always two of them and “they play good cop, bad cop.” This one was bad cop. Bank transfers don’t lie and all those ID’d should be fired.
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria reached out this evening saying they are ready to sue every SARS official who has collected money from any Nigerian via bank transfer. All we will need is evidence of the transfer your made from your bank statement. I’ll share more on this later
As campaign season kicks off for Nigeria's elections, I meet some passionate supporters of popular candidate

who call themselves

I am seeing the most horrific images of children who have been attacked in a school in Cameroon. School should be the one place where children are safe. So many humanitarian crises across Africa right now.
What is happening in Jos? I hear police are shooting at protesters. Send me what you are seeing and your experiences, when it is safe to do so. Stay safe.

#EndSARSProtest
What I have seen at
#EndSars
protests: Singing, chanting, dancing, volunteers with trash bags picking up litter, sharing food and water. Medics attempting to save lives. Lawyers helping for free. We have however seen much evidence of violence from police. Talk about that.
Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has raised concerns over violence witnessed across the country in the ongoing
#EndSARS
protests by youths. He called on the youths to sheathe their swords.

I woke up thinking about the Lekki tollgate report. So many damning elements. The most disturbing for me is the thorough clean-up of the scene the morning after which was later cited as a lack of evidence of deaths. 'Look no bloodstains. Nobody died at the scene." So chilling.
The doctor at Granville Hospital I spoke to for CNN's November report said he treated 15 people for gunshot wounds on the 20th, including a man who had to have his leg amputated. Yet the army says they were shooting in the air and not at protesters. It is unconscionable.
BREAKING: The Nigerian Army has pulled out of the Lagos Judicial Panel after Reddington Hospital testified that it treated victims from the
#EndSARS
protests with bullet wounds from October 20 - 22.
Hearing reports that police going door to door across the country to arrest palliative looters. This is unconfirmed and I am trying to verify. Please DM if you have any concrete information.
Well done to the journalist for persisting in asking the questions, even as he tried to evade it repeatedly. These two questions need to permanently be on the list for any interviews with him or his representatives until we get a satisfactory response.
Over last 2 weeks, I worked to get legal support to people across at least 20 states, and saw a simple thing: THERE IS MORE THINGS WE UNITE ON THAN CAN DIVIDE US. Same challenges, same hope, same desire for a better nation. Building that UNITED VOICE is where we must start from.
One of the strange things about the arrests at the
#Lekkitollgate
yesterday was that people were being rounded up before anything actually happened, no chanting, no banners, nothing. In this video, I asked one
@NigeriaPolice
officer what criteria for arrest was. He didn’t know.
One of the most heartwrenching stories I've worked on. This mother wept like her son died yesterday. Make no mistake, people died at the

The governor of Lagos state Babajide Sanwo-Olu tells

I have been reporting live on the coronation and my response was a bit more brutal than I intended but many I have spoken to are really not thinking about the coronation.
I've covered elections in Nigeria since 2015 and I've lived in the country for 7 years now. Yesterday, I felt so proud of Nigerians, the community spirit, the determination to vote, some even defied the threat of violence. Nigeria can and will be an important global player.
Arrived UK for summer hols and the difference in Covid protocols is stark. The Nigerian process is cheaper and more efficient. Long wait at LHR for manual checks, when MMA uses QR codes. Also paid £358 for all tests (+ daughter) compared to 50,400 naira. Kudos
@NCDCgov
I have not seen any evidence of this work for CNN beyond a few rambling interviews for some of the shows in 2009. Please enlighten me
@HNNAfrica
on your 20 year history with CNN.
Some of these fools following me have no idea I spent 20 years
@cnn
in 5 different capacities. They don't even know that the CNN they watch here is not exact same as CNN USA.
I just love this incredible woman. She has now been cooking for more than 96 hours and is gunning for 100 hours. She bypassed the world record at 88 hours!!

Nigeria's Defence HQ has confirmed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Harry and Meghan, will land in the country tomorrow morning and leave on Monday. Are you excited about this visit or completely indifferent? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
Some people are really tweeting that it is karma for my EndSars coverage that my cousin died in a building that was sealed by the authorities for not being structurally sound and was then allowed to continue construction. Wow. The rot is really deeper than I thought.
More employers in Lagos, with its mega population, need to allow their staff to work from home or equip them to. It’s terrible that thousands of ppl spend hours stuck in traffic, all heading in the same direction. Same thing going home. The toll on mental health is huge.
It's astonishing the speed that
@RufaiOseni
was brought to court and found guilty while thousands of pre-trial detainees languish in jail. Police should not point a gun at you for driving in a bus lane. I too have experienced this aggressive type of policing & it was frightening.
The panel inquiry's report is vindication for
@cnni
and journalists like
@fisayosoyombo
@nicholasibekwe
painstaking reporting. The panel's report is very thorough. May the souls of all those who died at the Lekki tollgate on October 20, 2020, rest forever in peace.
#Lekkitollgate
The arrests at the tollgate today were so random. I was filming live on Instagram and doing an interview with this man dressed in green with a beret when an officer shouted 'arrest that man,' and he was dragged into the van.
#EndSARSMemorial
When your journalistic hero shouts out your work. 😀😀
Thank you
@camanpour
for paving the way for us all with your heroic reporting efforts and also for giving voice to this important story.
You cannot fault the open communication style of the Lagos governor
@jidesanwoolu
. He has responded swiftly and appears keen to bring an end to this crisis. The apology is a nice touch too.
I hope the words translate into credible action.

We have also set up a panel to look into all cases of police brutality and fatality and have set up a N200m compensation fund. I will make all announcements shortly. Once again, I apologise to any protester that has faced brutality during any of the protests days.
Covering the news as a journalist in Africa takes a toll. From Congo, Ethiopia, Cameroon, Nigeria etc... So much conflict and human suffering. Only thing that keeps me going is the resilient and amazing ppl, creating so much out of nothing.
#africansrock
The folks at
@EiENigeria
tell me they started building a database of missing Nigerians in 2019, but ran out of funds. Seems like a good time to revive it to collate as many missing people as possible.
We need to start prioritising learning our indigenous languages. My daughter’s school offered free Yoruba classes after school, we were the only ones that signed up, so it was cancelled. Some parents in Nigeria take pride in their children not knowing their own language.
I’m trying out a new housekeeper. She arrived in Lagos from Jos on an overnight 14 hour bus ride, only to walk miles to my home cos no Okada, or keke. Part of masterplan or not, these are the only transport options for millions of Lagosians. Where are the alternatives?
They say life's turbulence makes us stronger so I must be very strong indeed. Months after my cousin, who was like a brother to me, died in the Ikoyi building collapse, my dear mother has died. Her family was praying and singing with her in the final moments. Sleep well dear mum.
Just found out Rastas are called “dadda head” in Trinidad. Yorubas call locs “dada”! Yoruba culture is still so embedded deeply in places where our ancestors were enslaved. Similarly in Brazil, the word for bell is “Agogo” (a Yoruba word) They also eat akaraje in Bahia.
Uganda’s
@KagutaMuseveni
has been President since 1986. When he assumed power, Ronald Reagan was US president, since then 6 other US presidents have been elected, including
@JoeBiden
. When will it be time for a handover that doesn’t involve arresting the opposition or ppl dying?
Just spoke to one of the Abuja protesters. She is struggling to breathe after the tear gas. She was in pain, but insisted on doing the interview because she is mad as hell that live rounds were fired at them after peaceful protests. They are bloody but not beaten.

#MarriageStory
Ten years ago today I got married. It lasted 3 years and I came away with a beautiful daughter and a heart full of (some) regrets. Does one mark such an auspicious occasion? Or just quietly acknowledge as one of the hopes and dreams that didn’t quite pan out?
You obviously missed the part in the report where it says CNN confirmed the letter. That means we SPOKE to the engineer to confirm he wrote the letter. Nice try though... keep casting doubts on my award-winning journalism. I can ALWAYS defend what I publish with FACTS!!!
Madam President (rtd) Iyabo Arinola Ifeoma Awokoya
1. I listened to
@StephanieBusari
's report today about the Ikoyi building that collapsed & quite frankly the lady needs a refresher course on media law
@RGAMeyer
. This lady published a letter said to have been written by the Structural Engineer to the development with no caveats/
At my daughter’s school recital and I asked my niece to save me a seat, only for another mum to move her because ‘their seat is at the back,’ after assuming she was a househelp. We really must stop our stinky elitist attitude towards homehelps and caregivers. They are humans too.
Please be careful sharing images and videos from South Africa. A lot of them are old, including the police chief talking about 80% foreigners which is from July 2017, as this screengrab from YouTube shows. There’s no need to stoke fresh tensions with old content.
