Big hero. Little Monster. Based on characters by Eiji Tsuburaya, a creative mind behind GODZILLA, the action-packed animated film ULTRAMAN: RISING hits Netflix in 2024

The two biggest opening weekends of the year are animated films, yet we don’t share pay or residual parity with our colleagues in the WGA or the DGA.
That’s not right.
Dear Character Designers,
I say this with love- Converse All-Stars aren’t the only shoes. There are other examples of footwear that say a lot about character. Get crazy; put some worn-out Vans or slick saddle oxfords on those cartoon feet! Heck, throw them in some flip flops. 😂
Spider-Verse. I Lost My Body. Coraline. The Breadwinner. Song of the Sea. The Red Turtle. The Wind Rises. The Tale of Princess Kaguya. Persepolis. The Fantastic Mr. Fox. Anomalisa. Isle of Dogs. The Book of Life. The Little Prince. Paprika.
Hard disagree.
We spend YEARS pitching, writing, storyboarding, designing, directing, and rewriting only to have our medium spoken down to and publicly mocked at less than half the price of our colleagues in live-action. Unacceptable.

A lot of folks feel like they’ve had the rug pulled out from under them. So, with the hope that this might help someone, I’m gonna talk about something that I don’t talk about- my time as director on Kubo. 1/?
Guys, if you want to let studios know that you appreciate groundbreaking visuals, incredible storytelling and rich, diverse characters, head out RIGHT NOW and support

. It’s truly one of the best films of the year. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
When an animated film is great, why is it almost always referred to as “one of the best ANIMATED films of the year” rather than one of the best films of the year, period? Why the qualifier when people have enjoyed the film as much or more than its live action counterparts?
If you haven’t taken the time, please seek out the work of Satoshi Kon. There’s not a weak film in his filmography. He pulls off that rare feat of combing high concept with well-observed, unique characters.
They say that animation is “booming” and yet artists, creators and writers don’t receive residuals and are paid a fraction of their live-action counterparts.
For years, creators at the big studios pushed for more stylized imagery and more diverse tones but were often shut down.
The success of Spiderverse debunked those reasons, paving the way for more stylistic and narrative diversity in big-budget animation.
Shout out to the team:)
Since folks are talking about stop-motion, I thought I’d share a little piece of magic from Kubo. This is one of the earliest tests created for the film. The motion blur on the blade is just a piece of acetate! Animated by the brilliant Dobrin Yanev.

I had a debate once with an animator who felt that if the animation wasn’t timed on 1s and 2s, it wasn’t good.
I pointed out that smooth action didn’t equate to thoughtful action and referred to the exceptional observation present in many Japanese animated films.
Toy Story, The Incredibles, Inside Out, Frozen, Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, etc. were all original films that generated millions upon release and continue to make BILLIONS in merchandise.
Paramount CEO Brian Robbins says they are moving away from releasing original animated movies in theaters & instead will focus on IPs.
“We’re not going to release an expensive original animated movie and just pray people will come.”

While working on a particularly challenging film, a veteran animator told me, “No matter how bad you think this is, I can guarantee you I’ve worked on worse.” He then confessed to animating the transformation scene for Turbo Teen.
Once upon a time children would wake up early on Saturday mornings to watch cartoons. One such toon from 1984 was TURBO TEEN, about a boy who werewolfs into a sports car whenever he gets overheated and it only got stranger from there.
This bit of animation always pops up around Mother’s Day. And yet, the studio has never once acknowledged the mother that inspired this story, my mother-in-law, Katy Brain- a fierce woman who battled dementia for years and still made a difference as a mother and grandmother.
This should go without saying, but never work for free. I repeat, DO NOT WORK FOR FREE. No unpaid OT. No doing it to “pay your dues”. It hurts you. It hurts your colleagues. If you’re gonna use your spare time to work on something for free, work on your own stuff.
From pink panthers and screwball rabbits to heroes trapped in intricate Escher-like worlds, Richard Williams’ uncompromising work spanned multiple genres and styles and was a testament to his utter devotion to the art of animation. There will never be another like him. RIP.
How the hell does a company shut down an animation studio when the demand for content has never been higher and under working conditions much safer than any other medium?
My heart goes out to my friends at Blue Sky. You don’t deserve this.
15 years ago today, Coraline was released. I met a lot of brilliant artists, and became a better one because of them. Here are a few things I sketched up back then.

There are a lot of folks on here complaining about the sameness of stories in animation, and it’s more apparent with every tweet that most of them are only watching films from the big studios.
Kubo took 15 years to make from the time I pitched to the time it was released.
The film that eventually became Ultraman will have taken 23 years to make by its release.
Hollywood is about endurance and persistence.
Rarely does it happen overnight.
Surprising. Bold. Emotional. Satisfying. And man, oh man, that ending!!!
Big ups to all of the folks who made Across the Spider-Verse.
Oh, and see it in
@IMAX
if you dare!!!
I’d love to change this notion that criticism needs to be “brutal” or that one should “rip it apart” for the notes to be valid. We’ve been so conditioned to believe that this approach is effective that we often ask for it!
Criticism can be honest without being nasty.
Don’t let other people, corporations, or setbacks get in the way of your stories. People want to hear them. They want to see them. We’re the ones with the dreams that people want to experience. That is POWERFUL. Know that. Embrace it. And if you wanna chat, I’m around. 20/end
Truth from George Lucas:
“There’s nothing worse than the frustration of having somebody who doesn’t get what you’re doing trying to turn it into something else.”
1/2 While everyone’s talking about groundbreaking animated films, here are a few that you may have missed. Each is brilliant in its own right and deserves your attention. Please add your own recs:)

Now that you’ve announced Spidey 2, IF, through some miracle of miracles, Japanese Spider-Man is written into the film, I will happily design him for you.

Kids are more durable and more savvy than we imagine. The fact that we tend to pull emotional punches in animation is frustrating. Stories are meant to acknowledge the truth of the world and help guide us through it. If we rip that truth from our stories, they teach nothing.
The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach, Corpse Bride, Coraline - All shot by the incomparable Pete Kozachik. All stunning and unique. He was a true master. RIP
I am a creator, writer, director, designer and producer doing my best to make cool things from the craziness in my head. I am currently in awe of my colleagues at Netflix.

The “core audience?” The film is on track to land the biggest opening weekend of the year, so maybe, just maybe, most people in this country disagree entirely with your skewed bigoted view.
There are a lot of folks on here complaining about the sameness of stories in animation, and it’s more apparent with every tweet that most of them are only watching films from the big studios.
Here’s

‘s concept art in ALL its TohoScope-ian glory. It’s an attempt to express a parent’s first encounter with their child. When we showed it to the lovely folks at Tsuburaya, they loved it because it showed Ultraman as a nurturing character.
A closeup of Kent Melton’s maquette for Kubo’s mother- probably the most challenging character I’ve ever designed. Kent brought it home:)

Let’s talk about tone for a second. The common opinion is that animated films only get big numbers when they lean toward comedy. The success of Spiderverse and Pinocchio proves that LOTS of folks will happily view animated films with a more dramatic tone if offered to them.
Characters we create, write, and design are featured on garments, made into toys, and sold as kid’s meals, making billions of dollars, and we never see a penny.
Directors in animation should be accepted into the DGA, and writers should receive pay parity with the WGA.
Some have asked- What’s with the Gordon run? Are you obsessed?
I like to spend time with a character. I like to get to know them. I do this by drawing, writing, and scribbling so that I can better understand their lives. And yes, I have a story that I desperately want to tell:)
Bong Joon Ho graciously accepted his well-deserved award, doing his best to thank people in a second language.
Meanwhile, Jon Miller chose to waste everyone’s time insulting him and spewing hate, stoking much more damaging fires than Bong Joon Ho’s exceptional film.

Making a film is like raising a child - it’s challenging, exhilarating, frustrating, and joyous. Tackling Ultraman, a character I've loved since I was 4, is especially daunting. But we are putting our souls into it - trying to make something special for everyone.

Way back in 2001, I had a crazy idea about a little one-eyed boy who made magical art to heal his mother. I was reading a lot of Japanese folktales at the time, and I’d just met my future wife’s mother who had dementia. 2/?
I visited my grandfather a couple of weeks ago, just before he passed. When I arrived, he had Ollie on his shoulder. He wanted me to know how proud he was of the nominations.
He was strong until the end. Thanks, Papaw. I hope you celebrated with us last night.
Before Godzilla Minus One, the director Yamazaki-san’s last few films were animated (Lupin III. Doraemon). My previous project before Ultraman: Rising was a live-action hybrid (Lost Ollie).
Storytelling is storytelling.
Fellow Academy members,
If you can’t be bothered to watch the nominated animated films because you think they’re “kids films,” please feel free to abstain from voting instead of bragging that you just ask your grandkids which film they liked.
Sincerely,
S
Animation requires imagination and trust. You have to look at loose, unfinished drawings for years and imagine the performance, the lighting and the color that those boards only hint at. You have to protect the film it will become. In other words, trust the process.
There are an insane amount of talented women in animation who should be directing and aren’t. I’ll consider a show groundbreaking when more of those talented ladies are represented.
1) It’s been 10 yrs since the release of Coraline. Here are few early pieces I created for the film. The lineup was created when Henry decided Bobinsky should be much taller (I thought he was crazy; he was right), and the other two images are from the test that got me the gig.
All seemed well. But it wasn’t. Not at all. There were signs, things I should’ve seen, but I was in it and loving it. Long story short, after nearly two years of work, I was removed as director- removed from something that came so deep from my heart, and if nearly broke me. 15/?
I am so excited to share this. Lost Ollie is a love letter to where a grew up and the people who made me. I can’t wait to share it and hopefully bring some hope into the world.
Ladies and gentleman, meet Ollie...
