omg I have my first official job as an OBGYN😭😭 I am SO EXCITED to be apart of the Duke family!! Dreams really do come true. I cannot wait to meet my co-residents/future besties 🤩🤩🤩
Hey
#medtwitter
👋🏽 I’m Shakira, a 4th year at LSUHSC-Nola applying to
#obgynmatch2023
! My interests are medical education, pediatric obstetrics/gynecology and health equity! Can’t wait to embark upon this journey with y’all.

Put some respect when you mention our names. We aint no plain Janes. That’s DOCTORs Holloway, Petrie, Martin, Jackson, DeGrange, Obot, Fondong, Green and Harding!! Sincerely, Sisters in Melanin 🤎👩🏽⚕️
Number one on my rank list, number one on my March Madness Bracket (unfortunately 🥲) BUT now…. Number one in my heart- So excited to announce I’ll be training at Duke for my OBGYN residency!!! Go BlueDevils 🤩

End of week 1 of intern year & I’ve drawn these conclusions so far:
1) being a doctor is FUN
2) i’m just about sure I matched at the most incredible program there is: the best culture, resources, support staff, and teaching/learning
3) boy do I have a lot to learn😅

FIRST INTERVIEW INVITE THIS MORNING!! 💃🏽But, wait whoa it’s not October 25th yet, I’m not ready 😂 Excited that my match journey finally begins. Let the flood gates of IIs OPEN

In the same day, I had the privilege of operating with both my residency coach and mentor, two black women, during Black History Month. Oh, and Happy National Black Woman Physician’s Day while we’re at it 😜🖤
#MedTwitter
Are you an OBGYN if you haven’t almost accidentally ruined a gender reveal bc you saw gender on US then later referred to baby as “he” and the FOB caught you but the mom said “no she said IT is wiggling, not HE” so you gaslight him into believing you didn’t say he and it works 😅
498 MCAT 1st attempt. I said “what the heck I’ll apply w/ this” and got in on my 1st try. I sent in 6 secondaries, got 3 IIs, and got into both schools I interviewed at (I turned down the 3rd once accepted to LSU and USA). I’ve been my class prezx4 years & GHHS.
I want to start a thread of firsts!! Today, I DID MY 1st SUCTION D&C! As a smile appeared behind my mask on the roll back to PACU my moment of accomplishment turned quickly into disappointment in myself for not having realized that my pt had a singular tear running down her cheek
I want to start a thread of the most unique and interesting questions I’ve been asked along my interview trail. So far, today I was asked “what is your spirit animal?” And yesterday was “If you could pick something to broadcast on a billboard across the city, what would it be?”
I love that ERAS submissions yesterday brought on all these new
#MedTwitter
introductions. Welcome y’all 😍 I love following new potential colleagues, friends, co-residents 👀
I love that OBGYN has done more than most to standardize the entire process however I have 1 more suggestion- how about everyone use the same invitation platform? Whether it be ERAS, Thalamus or 3rd Friday etc?? It would be nice to have all of them in one spot lol
#medtwitter
How it started vs how it’s going. Who knew that a kind Twitter DM would turn into a mutual support system while on our away rotations!! What a sweet surprise (and strange coincidence 😂)
First (intern) date, kinda nervyyyy 🥹 potluck style. I am quite sure I got the BEST squad- so pumped to continue to form relationships with these ladies ❣️

ONE WEEK UNTIL MATCH!! Can y’all believe somewhere out there our match results exist? Like someone knows where I matched already! (If you’re reading this… slide into my DMs real quick. Don’t worry I won’t tell anyone😂)
Heyyy
#medtwitter
, as I am shifting gears towards developing my final rank list… does anyone have a recommendation for how much money I should have set aside for moving expenses? I’m sure that first intern pay check doesn’t come for a while so I don’t want to be caught slippin😂
And while I get to move onto the next case, this woman has to go home without her baby. Efficiency in residency is how you survive, but I never want to get to the point where I’m moving so fast that I get numb to these things and miss these moments to be human with my pts.
For those who’s intersectionality include
#beyhive
and MS4 I just want to let you know, you’re not alone. Having to buy these tickets while literally guessing what city I’m going to be in when I attend the concert…. I am unwell. I stand in solidarity. 😭😭😭😭😭
#MedTwitter
I was so proud of myself for what I had done that I forgot to stop and think about the fact that my pt had just lost her baby. It was a good mental exercise that as a resident, a pt interaction may be a blip in time of your reality but for a pt, it is their ENTIRE reality
Today brought the end of an incredible away rotation with Emory’s OBGYN department. Thank you so much to everyone at
@EmoryGynOb
for a great 4(ish… thanksgiving holiday😛) weeks. So blessed to have the opportunity to learn from a top program in the country!
My rank list is just sitting in NRMP. I have no intentions of changing it around but will I still wait until March 1st to submit and verify? Absolutely.

Someone please remind me to take off my white coat when I get out my car at the gas station. Young fella approached me and said “I love a woman in uniform.”💀 Top marks though because he did proceed to ask me if I was a doctor instead of assuming I was a nurse 👏👩🏽⚕️

Day 2 of orientation consisted of a walking tour of some of the most historic parts of Durham, NC! It’s so important to understand the way that gentrification, economics, access to housing, food & green spaces intersect with health & wellness in a community. We learned so much!
Thank you so much to the powers that be that OBGYN is not participating in the meaningful experiences part of the supplemental application. I am forever grateful. I owe y’all a drink in 20 years when I can afford it. God Bless

Final update: out of respect for those who maybe didn’t do as well as they would have hoped I will not share my score report but I WILL share that I improved my score by 30 WHOLE POINTS from step1!!! I am over the moon, so happy I could cry. Thanks for the good vibes friends!🙏🏾🥹
The countdown begins- only TEN days left until the suggested interview invite day for

!!!

It’s becoming harder and harder to contain my excitement every day that goes by! 🥹😊
I think I’m about to start making a match wish list hehe
#MedTwitter
and interns, what do you wish you would have had, or asked for, what’s made your life easier?? 😀
With orientation around the corner, I just wanna get this off my chest. Look, I am all out of “fun facts” okay?! Let’s normalize doing introductions OTHER than fun facts PLEASE 😩😩
Sincerely,
A PGY-1 who’s all outta fun facts
Moral of the story: scores don’t matter as much as you think they do. Don’t count yourself out. Hope you found my story to be motivational! Good luck to you ❤️
Me and a few of my classmates volunteered today at our Associate Dean of Diversity & Community Engagement’s church food giveaway and took a few blood pressures!
@LSUHealthNO
I have not stepped foot inside a clinic, OR, or L&D floor since November. When they said 4th year would be nice, I didn’t think it would be THIS nice 😂🙈

for LSU School of Medicine! We discussed some VERY impressive applicants today. The future of medicine is so bright🤩 (pictured: all the other students hiding in the back row with me😂)
This isn’t super timely 😅 but it’s never too late to share that I survived my 1st L&D call. Starting on gyn, it was a tad disorienting. Idk about y’all, but I use entirely diff brain spaces to think about obstetrics vs gyn. Having the best team was KEY to a successful weekend 💙
4/4. I’ve never seen such a beautiful sight. My
#ERAS2023
is now certified and SUBMITTED bby!! So excited for these programs to see what I’m made of 😏 Can interview season come any faster!?
#obgynmatch
Just finished up my last day of my primary AI and I just wanna say if anyone out there is applying LSU OBGYN we have the COOLEST residents ever and if you aren’t applying…. Well then you should
Today for the end of my
#MFM
rotation I did a prezi to the entire department (😅) on Complications of Monochorionic Twins. Had a feeling I killed it, but this text sealed the deal. Not normally one to care about outside validation, but I can’t lie-this feels great!
#medtwitter
LAST MED PROM EVER!!! Where have the years gone? So blessed for the mems with my people (but also looking foward to making new special mems in Durham hehe)
Today, I noted that the introductory slide show was entitled “Recruitment Day Presentation” instead of the usual “Interview Day” and it was a good reminder that just as much we are being checked out we should also be checking out these programs too. Don’t forget that y’all!
Anybody else got that “night before the first day of school” feeling we used to get in elementary? Like when you used to lay your clothes out so anxiously excited for the next day? Such a nostalgic feeling, I love it. Goodnight and goodluck y’all. 🫶🏽🫶🏽

As a medical student, it’s okay to ask questions. Just know you run the risk of going home with a book the size of a 12 month old. Do people even read textbooks anymore? Where is the screen, the buttons, how do I operate this thing?
Today at my away rotation, all 4 doctors in clinic had some connection to Louisiana. Either they were born in there, trained there, mentor a student there, or have a spouse who is from there. My preceptor said “Shakira, if that’s not a sign, idk what is.” Idk… maybe it is👀😂
Does anyone know of a good way (other than duo lingo) to learn Spanish???? Literally every single resident at my home program know it at least conversationally and I want to learn for my future patients 😩
Here I am, once again asking for a reason as to why I am paying money to complete onboarding paperwork. “Resident Training Registration Fee”??? “NBME Transcript Fee” ??? When will this stop 😭
Gold Humanism and Alpha Omega Alpha partnered together for a back to school drive. My fellow MS4 Sarah Rimmer, AOA president, and I had the opportunity to put together and deliver the class room goodies to the teachers of Stella Worley Middle in Westwego, LA!❤️❤️

and I just—- 😳😂 Is this what fame feels like? 😂😂
Why does 7-8 hours of sleep waking up at 5 AM not feel the same as 7-8 hours of sleep waking up at a more decent hour? Am I the only one who feels this way? 💀 like I might as well have gotten 3 hours of sleep bc that’s what it surely feels like😂
Hey
#obgyntwitter
any tips for learning how to do good cervical checks other than just sticking your fingers into the abyss of tissue and taking a wild guess? 😅
#MedTwitter
I gushed for 10 minutes about roller skating and pickle ball at my top program interview and I refuse to believe that this didn’t help up connect more. How am I supposed to find a place that’s the “best fit” if all we have to go off of was board scores and statistics?
Disappointed to confirm that the AAMC has removed the “Hobbies & Interests” field from the 2024 ERAS application. It might seem trivial, but that small field had value, and it’s going to make interviews less interesting and personal.
Day 12/12 of working in a row and the only fuel I’m running on is the fact that as soon as I step out of my last case for the day I am hopping on a plane to see BEYONCÉ… oh and my besties

Wow only 37? Not sure if you’re gonna match I heard you need at like 66 🥴 perhaps you should have applied to pediatric derm anesthesia as a back up. Stay strong sis
Y’all take everything so serious. More think pieces on medical student rights please!!! If that’s how y’all wanna spend your Friday keep ‘em coming lol
Me, complaining about having to be at the hospital super duper ridiculously early for L&D, while simultaneously loving it because I ❤️ the moms, the babies, the chaos and everything about OBGYN soo so so much

As I end the 1st week on my 1st AI I’m reflecting on what it took to get here. I found this on the floor of my car & was immediately reminded 😂 It’s so nice now to be able to go home &read about PPROM & fetal heart tracing than memorizing Lights Criteria for pleural effusions😂
