29 years into ANC rule and we’re cooking on gas. Literally. Incomprehensible that their incompetence is so complete. Nothing more thrilling than waking up to another 4 hours of load shedding on a working day.

A bad week for South Africa-the De Ruyter interview, our grey-listing & now a damning piece in The Economist. They conclude we need all the help we can get. The country is falling apart: blackouts, dry taps, rampant crime. Besides we’ve lost our political heft. No longer count.

Breaks my heart. But we’re all to blame, especially business. We sat back and watched it unfold in front of us, too scared to speak out against the ineptitude, plunder & corruption, just in case of a (political) backlash against us. Well, read the consequences of our inaction.

I’m still haunted by the senseless murder of Isabel Van Coller yesterday morning at 5.40am in Bramley & the indignity her lifeless body being thrown out the car like a sack of rotten potatoes. Personally, I’d swop a victory over crime than the result of an 80 minute rugby match.

Last week we received a $4.3bn loan from the IMF. At 16.40 to the dollar that gave us the R70bn everyone was so excited about, especially the yield at around 1.1%. Well! The rand is now 17.40 to the dollar, which means we owe the IMF R75bn. A loss of R5bn or 7% in a week.

The JSE is surging in the last few minutes of trade ahead of the quarter end. Sasol up 18%, MTN up 17.5%, Absa up 17%, Ned up 13%. Could it be institutions and fund managers window dressing? Never!!The investment industry is known as a bastion of uprightness, honesty & integrity.

Worthwhile read on housing in the Economist. I’ve never believed buying a house was an investment. It’s a lifestyle decision & a huge draw on income. The only time it becomes an investment is when your kids shift you off to an old age home, sell the house and spend the proceeds.

Australia grows at it fastest pace in 6 years in the second quarter; South Africa enters a recession, its first since 2009. At one point our biggest economic competitor, the Aussies have left us coughing dust.

While we’re all crowing about the JSE’s 9.5% gain this year, Magda’s @Magda_Wierzycka Itrix S&P500 ETF is up 27.5%, Eurostoxx50 up 19.8%, 4th Revolution fund up 33.3% and MSCI World up 23%. It just reinforces, yet again, the better opportunities that exist in offshore markets.

Now that the world needs scientists & doctors, hopefully all the smart kids will change direction & stay away from financial mkts, where their algorithms have given volatility a new meaning. Leave financial mkts to the dumb kids. They were just fine until you came along.

Been running for 45 years at minimum of 70km a week Means I have 164000km in my legs. That’s nearly half way to the moon. Problem is I’m not going to live long enough to get home.

Hopefully I’m out of hospital today and back to my usual routine by Wednesday. Can’t say enough thanks to my friend Dr Kevin Fisher & his daughter Megan, & to Linda and Karen for their love & care during what have been the most traumatic two weeks - health wise - of my life.

In Aug ‘21, I was dragged unwillingly into a debate around investing in stocks (so dated!) against crypto. I couldn’t match my opponent’s intellect & well prepared arguments. I lost the debate hands down. 15mths later, the S&P500 is down 14%, Bitcoin is down 63%. I’m glad I lost

Worst thing about being kosher, or for that matter halaal, is running past a house, on a cold winter’s morning, where they’re cooking bacon and eggs for breakfast.

4 days into the new trading year and already Glencore up 21%, Sasol 19%, Sappi 19%, Anglos 19%, BHP 17% and Mondi 13%. The All Share up 5%. The whole of 2020 the All Share was up only 4%. Should we close out and call it quits for 2021.

I’m a big Spotify fan. Always tune-in to Today’s Top Hits. Always been a rock follower. But I have a dilemma. At my age of 72 can I admit I like Cardi B’s new hit WAP. Love the beat. Struggling with the lyrics though. Not sure I can recommend it to my kids and grandkids.

Pollyanna can’t even fix the robots. That’s 1930s technology. Yet he dreams of introducing electric vehicles and other other hi tech industries. Delusional. I’ve turned off and gone to bed.
