Need some good news to start the week? 7-month-old Umuryango, the youngest of Pablo's group, taking his first steps all by himself but still close to mother Ishema. This is an important milestone in the infant development! 😍 🦍 (Video Cedric Ujeneza)
This is female Ubukombe babysitting the 10 month old infant of Gutangara from Pablo's group. Babysitting is a great strategy in gorilla development and in large groups such as Pablo's we are able to see this type of behavior more often than in others.
Today would have been Dian Fossey’s 87th birthday. Mountain gorillas still exist today because of Dian’s courage and persistence. She NEVER wavered in her commitment to the gorillas – even in the face of significant challenges.

On this day 32 years ago, Dian Fossey was killed in her cabin in Rwanda. She was the first of many to devote her life to saving this species, and we are honored to carry on this important work, never losing or forgetting the pioneering spirit of Dian.
Uncle Gasizi loves his nephew Ubusugire! The 7-year-old male has shown his playful side while he takes care of the 1-year-old. While they do not have the same mother, they do share the same maternal family lineage.

Did you know that 100% of the furniture at our new Ellen Campus was made in Rwanda? From tables, desks, chairs, stools, benches, shelves, credenzas, and beds, to accessories such as pendant lights, rugs, pillows, handles, and hooks – it was all built in Rwanda by Rwandans!
Macibiri is the only infant in her group, so does not have playmates of her age to help entertain her. Macibiri is a very historic gorilla because she is a granddaughter of legendary silverback leader Titus, who was studied by Dian Fossey herself after he was born in 1974.
I think anyone who is a parent can relate to Ishyaka at this moment! Newborns typically stay with mom the first 3 years of their life. Thankfully for mom, this little one has an older sister, Akariza, who will start to help mom babysit very soon!

When gorillas are on the move, it's common for one gorilla to hold on to another gorilla's back while walking on two feet. This is a friendly behavior and a sign of alliance between gorillas.
It definitely takes a village to raise these beautiful gorilla babies! Teta takes on the role of babysitter while mom Ishema is most likely getting some rest. 💤 The love that they have for one another is unmatched! 😍💚

The mountain gorilla habitat is actually very rainy. Gorillas are used to rain but definitely dislike it. They gather together with their bodies and heads bent to minimize exposure. Moms keeps their infants warm like mother Kurudi is protecting infant Macibiri here.
Happy 39th birthday to the lovely Gutangara! 🎁🎂 She is the second oldest female that we monitor and she just had a baby earlier this month! She looks amazing for her age and we cannot wait to see what year number 40 looks like! Everyone wish her a happy birthday! 🎉
Today is silverback Inshuti’s 35th birthday! Inshuti is a lone silverback, meaning that he doesn’t have a group. He is one of the oldest silverbacks that we monitor and has lived alone for many years. Follow the link to read more!
We are so excited about the new infant in Ntambara's group from 15-year-old female Kurinda! Here Kurinda is protecting and caring for her precious newborn infant. 💛💚🦍

Wonderful news from the field: 17-year-old Ishema gave birth! Senior Research Assistant Didier Abavandimwe was first on the scene and captured these brilliant images of mother Ishema and infant! This brings Pablo's group to 25 gorillas!
We remember the legendary Dr. Dian Fossey, who was killed on this day in 1985. She devoted her life to the study and protection of mountain gorillas, helping the world to understand these "gentle giants."
The first three years of an infant gorilla's life is heavily dependent on mom. Ubwitange is about 1 ½ years old so they will stay close to Nsanganira for just a little bit longer!

😋🌿 Although it may not look very appetizing, thistle is a major source of water and nutrition for gorillas. It’s also the cause of the stains on their teeth and tongue due to the high tannin content. And don’t you just love that crunchy sound 😄
