By age 30 you should have at least 40 different tote bags you don‘t need but keep stuffed into one larger tote bag which is the one you‘d technically need the most but now can no longer access
Academic Twitter is 50% people complaining their students prep their presentations too late & don‘t do their reading and 50% people talking about finishing their conference presentation on the train & realizing they haven‘t read that book they were supposed to review in 2019

Sir Ian can pee wherever he wants without drinking anything like even if he wasn‘t literally fucking Ian McKellen he‘s also over 80 years old omg the kids today
Let me get this straight: The richest man on Earth put on a cowboy hat,
launched himself into space in a penis shaped rocket and lasted a whole 11 minutes there. It‘s a tragedy for humanity, but it sure as hell is a gift for anyone teaching American studies.
Can we all finally wake up now? It’s a job, it‘s not a calling, it‘s a job, yes you can do something else, it‘s a job, yes you can even still do research cause nobody pays you for that anyway, it‘s a job, you‘ll be fine. It‘s a job and you‘re a whole person without it.
Can we stop pretending it is punching down to criticize a guy who said he isn‘t getting hired cause he‘s a white man and called his own book that came out 5 minutes ago field defining where did we lose the plot
@fordhoIden
With all due respect, no. He‘s done Gifted, Defending Jacob, Ghosted, Knives Out all long since he was cast in that role, most of them after he finished shooting Endgame, too. I think he‘s mostly chilling rn after a decade of this, but he‘s a lot more capable & far from done.
@timminglab
How about being less of a humblebragger and use your platform to help people that are precariously employed, particularly scholars of color right now? That might help with feeling better. We all suffer from imposter syndrome but you actually have the power to affect change.
@SGUYBRAY
Nothing in this world disappoints me more than queer people excluding other queer people. TERFy lesbians, kinkshamers, those claiming bi or ace people aren’t real, all of them. It‘s like they forgot that in the end, the Nazis won‘t care which kinda queer we are.
Well, looks like I‘m going to a day clinic for depression for 2 months. And yes I will continue to talk about this because we need to. Generally and in academia.
Does everyone just have those 10 films and 2 sitcoms they rotate putting on in the background when they don‘t really want to watch anything actively cause they‘re too tired but it kinda keeps them company?
Nothing to promote, just be kind to each other and throw out at least half of those tote bags. And get a new bag of bags for when you need to carry parcels to the post office.
Not all men, surely, but have you realized this is not about you so sit the *fuck* down and shut up with your whataboutisms.
My thoughts are with

‘s friends and family, and every woman out there who has endured harassment, abuse and rape.

is not over.
Apparently tote bags in another tote bag is the one true universal human experience, we‘re at 26,5k and I have now seen retweets translate it into Italian, French, Spanish, Dutch, Hindi, Mandarin, Portuguese, Hebrew and Bosnian
@ardenthistorian
@WaltDisneyWorld
It‘s about an attraction set in Hollywood in 1939 but the fact that nobody in the whole goddamn marketing department thought about this for even one second and then now has not taken this down in a whole 5 days is just … 🫠🫠🫠
Can we stop referring to postdocs as „postdoctoral students“? Can we stop inviting them to things for „young scholars“ or using the dreaded German „Nachwuchs“? Of course I want to present my work somewhere or get feedback and guidance but Christ. We have doctorates. We are 30+.
@RamonGoings
Academia already is 50 unpaid side hustles in a trenchcoat, how about we instead just fairly pay people for all the work they do and don‘t foster an even worse culture of overwork. Just a thought.
I‘m sorry to inform you that terminology like „queerbaiting“ or the „bury your gays“ trope is part of „Twitter discourse“ also because it‘s coming out of a discussion that‘s been theorized in media studies and in the queer community since before you were born so maybe sit down.
Perennial reminder: Don‘t let academia define your life. Don‘t let your work, especially if precarious, define who you are and become what your self worth hinges on. Don‘t let it ruin your relationships. Been there, done that, wasn‘t worth it.

This is what depression/burnout can look like. Yes I can manage to get dressed and put on make up and meet a friend and have a pretty „normal“ day while I‘m also on long term sick leave for basically no longer being able to do my work. /1
My grandmother died. Both of them died within 3 months of each other, so if you are one of these lecturers who like to make jokes about students having multiple grandmas dying in short succession, I already didn‘t like you, but now I will just deck you
Was just called a "radical leftist activist that is vomiting her useless nonsense into the world under the label of science" and I am considering changing my Twitter bio.
German girl summer, because when I leave the house the most important thing I have to remember is to switch from my indoor Birkenstocks to my outdoor Birkenstocks
Hey folks I don‘t normally do this but I‘m having a bad mental health day and have massive imposter syndrome about everything. If you have a kind word to spare, I‘d appreciate it. I guess at least it helps to normalize this shit, talking about it.
Last day of 9 weeks of depression clinic. Back to life and work tomorrow as I‘m flying to LA for conferencing and tons of fun.
If you need help, please ask for it, there‘s resources for you. Find a therapist, take the meds.
Trust me. It took me long enough.
In this moment when Arnold Schwarzenegger is speaking out about right wing terror while pulling out his Conan the Barbarian sword and Chuck Norris is rumored to be among those storming the Capitol, I‘m thinking about those who told me pop culture studies are irrelevant.
Has any lyric gone as hard as „When everything's made to be broken, I just want you to know who I am?“ (Don‘t answer this if you weren‘t born between like 1980 and 1995)
@wtflanksteak
That‘s one of the best films ever made and it totally thrives on the fact that she sucks but she‘s also 28, somehow which made so much sense as I got older

I just found out my grandma died an hour ago. I‘m on a plane by myself. I knew it was coming, but it‘s still the worst place to find out, while simultaneously most on brand. All I can think is that I sound like her when I answer the phone. Goodbye.
Had a conversation today with several German postdocs who were wary of joining Twitter - one concern was not being able to separate your professional and your private opinion. I’m still very confused as to why that should be a thing. This objectivity bogeyman is harmful.
Telling everyone how much work you will do over the holidays is btw not the thing you deserve a badge of honor for. Just a friendly reminder from a workaholic who did this until burnout once: setting boundaries, taking breaks and self care are what deserves applause.
@D_Herrmann
@JuergenZimmerer
I can now officially say that I will be a short term postdoctoral fellow for 2 months at
@GHIWashington
this coming fall! I will do archival research for my second book project and I‘m very excited - and hope the pandemic won‘t affect these plans yet again.
Since it‘s September I‘m happy to announce that Germany still doesn‘t actually do tenure track at all and most countries are cutting permanent positions anyway and we are all fucked.
Can we like start to think about peer review as a collaborative process, as an act of mutual support? Not as an exercise to show how much we know and (re)inforce hierarchies?
Well, looks like I will stay at Uni Kassel Versität until exactly February 20, 2028!
Looking forward to having a steady income for the foreseeable future and working more with

Like: „He was hilarious. Even when he was dying, he was exactly the same. He was lying in bed, too weak to stand, losing his sight, going: ‘Have you heard Mrs Bowie’s new album, darling? What does she think she’s doing?’ I always had the best time with him.”“
While my own author copies remain in Brexit customs hell,
@manwithoutatan
’s arrived and I finally get to hold my own book! 😍 My gratitude goes out to those who supported me all this way from dissertation to monograph; you’re too numerous to list here, so see acknowledgements.❤️
If this was the case in my life — and thankfully it’s not (I’ve even made some new friends in recent years) — you would have to waterboard me before I admitted it let alone splashed it across a newspaper to promote a novel.
Today I can finally announce that my thesis is officially contracted with
@IntellectBooks
under the working title "A Cultural History of Disneyland, 1955-2016: Middle Class Kingdoms." If reviews and everything else works out, it should hit bookshelves in 2020!

I‘m 34 and 6 years postdoc and my chances at tenure are close to 0, I have lost jobs to mediocre white men, to friends, to people who were more qualified than I was, to people the committee wanted from the beginning. I‘m bitter but I‘m not racist about it, I joined a union.
Since I‘ve attended roughly 20 conferences in my career thus far I have a long list of do‘s and don‘ts that I want to adhere to now that I am organizing a big one myself. This is about diversity and accessibility. What would you add / amend here?

Fellow pop culture and especially Disney scholars, I‘m scheduled to do an Instagram Live session next Wed, 6:30 PM GMT with

to talk about my upcoming book and generally researching and teaching popular culture. Drop by and AMA! 🤓
absolutely despise it when humanities academics talk about "loving lunch break." you shouldn't love lunch break and you shouldn't demand anyone else to love lunch break, it is wildly inappropriate. just fundamentally not the correct way to do serious work in the archive
So we spent all of last winter in a pseudo lockdown that meant we were working 100% and had no social life outside of Zoom and we somehow muddled through cause vaccines were coming and now we have them and it may end up being exactly the same.
Looks like the cat’s out of the bag: From November 1, I‘ll be a research assistant at

The humanities are not just 'dying.' They are being murdered by Boards of Trustees, admins, legislatures, and consultants who criticize and then underfund, and then, amazingly, those programs and depts tend to do less well. And, in many cases, they still do will with less
