In February, Gov. Abbott ordered Texas DFPS to investigate families of transgender children for abuse.
@SLisaWashington
(
@Brooklynlaw
) argues the order fits the family regulation system’s broader project: weaponizing fear against marginalized families.
Taught my first Evidence class
@WisconsinLaw
today. Of course, we had to start by discussing the YSL trial. I feel really lucky to be teaching a great group of engaged students!
Wishing our returning students a great first day of classes and a successful year going forward. Don't forget to check the calendar of events on BLS Connect to see what's happening on campus in the coming days and months.

At the end of February, I spent a few days furiously typing. The result is "Weaponizing Fear" – An essay about family regulation, the targeting of LGBTQ folx, and intersectionality. It's now forthcoming in the Yale Law Journal Forum. SSRN link here

We’re going to watch and discuss the video of LAPD stopping and searching designer Salehe Bembury in our first crim pro class of the semester next week. May or may not have gotten distracted by his sneaker designs while prepping the slides.
Thank you to everyone that attended the 2022 Workshop for New Law School Teachers! We hope you enjoyed the sessions and connecting with colleagues. Best of luck in your new careers!

Pre-ordered and can’t wait to read

newest book. When I taught a family defense clinic, I relied heavily on her insights in “Shattered Bonds”.
Holding Torn Apart in my hands today! I’m so grateful to Michelle Alexander, Angela Y. Davis & Bryan Stevenson—and many other cherished colleagues and comrades —for their support. 🙏🏾
Today, Rise launched a new publications series on the intersection of family policing and domestic violence. Here, we share a few key points and recommendations. Read the full introduction to the series at:

It was great to be on this panel. My focus was on the ways the family regulation system surveils marginalized families and produces information that immigration officials are able to use against those same families.
Speakers at “Who Watches the Watchers: Surveillance and the Law," this year’s Edward V. Sparer Public Interest Law Forum, shed light on how ride-sharing apps, text messaging, and search engines have brought convenience to our lives, but at what price?
My latest paper -- Social Insurgency and Law Reform -- about the last decade of racial justice protest, abolitionist organizing, and spontaneous mass action; and the wide range of reforms it produced.
Now up at SSRN:
In this book review for
@HarvLRev
, I got to put “The School for Good Mothers” by

Hey

@Uber_Support
where do I report a driver who drives away and cancels the trip as soon as they see that all of the passengers are Black? Doesn’t seem to fall into any category I can find on the app. Asking for myself.
Thanks to everyone who provided feedback and comments on earlier versions! More feedback welcome! Excited to work with the wonderful editors
@BULawReview
over the next few months.
Taking it back to the ABA-Academy for Justice workshop a couple of weeks ago. Judge Carlton Reeves inspired & reminded us that judges read our work, and it was great to re-connect and meet more scholars. Workshops help because (good) scholarship is a collaborative effort.

Exciting new scholarship. Can’t wait to read. Great to witness language transformation (and much more) in this space —> family regulation, family policing

I’ve started going to a coffee shop for an hour each week, where I treat myself to something nice while spending about 60 minutes reading. Then I head to the office. I don’t bring a laptop! For some reason a chocolate croissant or an herbal tea really helps me protect that time😄
Glad that I did the “Reclaiming Black Spaces” walking tour at the

"Falsche Fakten"? Solche Rechtfertigungen zu sehen, während wir hier in NYC als Anwälte täglich massive Polizeigewalt zu sehen bekommen ist unerträglich. Es geht hier buchstäblich um das Leben und Überleben von Menschen.
Rereading “The Alchemy of Race and Rights” by Patricia Williams is one of the best things I’ve done for myself this past summer. I think it counts as self-care.
All due respect to my friends and family, I’m counting this as the best Christmas present of all time. Thank you, Mr. President, for choosing THE SCHOOL FOR GOOD MOTHERS as one of your favorite books of 2022. Congrats to all the authors! ❤️
