Ushimaru was Zoro’s only direct relative & him being dead made the most sense for the story. Usimaru preferred dying in battle against Kaido > living under Kaido. Fighting to the death is better than Zoro having a coward for an uncle or a man with a broken will.

Zoro’s getting lost gag is a satirical take on the “Wandering Samurai”. Zoro being the lost son of Wano was greatly emphasized by Oda creating 1 word. “Sunacchi” it means throw away your name. Something Zoro has never said Oda purposely made sure Zoro never threw away his name.

Ushimaru has no son & Zoro is a foreigner from far away land no one would have any reason or proof to tell Zoro of the relation. Zoro is the lost son of Wano we know Oda’s gags always have a deeper meaning woven into the story rooted in the history of the character.

Oda placed this as a tether to Zoro’s Shimotsuki lineage. All the dojo’s in Wano were closed under Orochi & Kaido’s reign it was a way of keeping the people weak so there could be no rebellion. Luckily Zoro was born in Shimotsuki village where he learned Wano Swordsmanship

Zoro’s Santoryu is just a 3 sword wielding version of Shimotsuki Ryu. Every one of Zoro’s attacks can be used with 0-3 swords. So Zoro is enhancing the strength & skill level of Ryuma’s creation. Zoro is only missing 1 feat to truly surpass Ryuma & that is forging a Black Blade.

Zoro trades Shusui for Enma because they are the same grade of blade. Shusui is the strongest known sword of the 21 Great Blades being the only Black 1. Enma is the 2nd strongest we know of but it will surpass Shusui when it turns black & raises to Supreme Grade with Yoru.

Enma surpassing Shusui is the 2nd way Zoro>Ryuma will be solidified. Zoro will have made a far stronger Blade than pre blackened Shusui turn black. Shusui was originally a grade lower than what it currently is. So it definitely didn’t have the same requirements or power as Enma.

Yasuie had been in hiding for years Orocchi wasn’t even aware he was alive Yasuie also stopped using his family name. So fate has 2 Shimotsuki meet 1 who must hide his true name and the other who doesn’t know his true name. Yasuie ended up dying for the success of the raid.

In Thriller Bark when we meet Ryuma he is never referred to as Shimotsuki. That isn’t revealed till we reach Wano even Kinemon never says Ryuma’s family name pre Wano.

Each Shimotsuki has lost or discarded their name for one reason or another. Usimaru told Yamato his name was SonSo b4 fightin Kaido. Yasuie hid his name to survive & help bring the Dawn. Zoro doesn’t even know he is Shimotsuki blood. Lastly Ryuma’s full name was never given in TB
