It’s my favorite thing I’ve ever written, because I’ve been wanting to write it for 12 years.
A true Bladen County legend, in every sense of the word. Thanks, Coach Cross.
After finishing 3-for-8, including 0-for-3, in UNC basketball’s win against Lehigh, freshman guard Elliot Cadeau is getting up shots at the Smith Center. He set up the shooting machine himself.
You’ll wanna hear this quote form UNC’s Cameron Johnson. A portion:
“I don’t have a national championship. I don’t even have a Final Four. I’ve got a round of 32 beatdown by Texas A&M, so that kind of fuels me and I know that fuels a lot of my other teammates.”
UNC’s Roy Williams on “Philosopher Nas” Little:
“I’ve never heard that nickname. I have no frickin’ idea what you’re talking about. ... He’s extremely bright.”
Little earned academic all-ACC honors.
My time as a HS sports reporter in Fayetteville has come to an end. I’ll be transitioning to full-time coverage of Duke and UNC for The Fayetteville Observer/USA Today Network. As someone who loves college sports and the state of North Carolina, this has always been the goal.
In 2021, Duke fan Harper Harrell was diagnosed with leukemia. Harrell, 10, took her final chemotherapy treatment this evening. Heather, Harper’s mom, said that completes 864 days of treatment. The Blue Devils will celebrate Harper at halftime.
Things ya love to see
It’s been five days since Seventy-First removed Tony Jones as its boys basketball coach. I have yet to receive anything in support of that decision. From emails to social media posts, everything I’ve seen to this point is in support of Jones. Terrible look for the Falcons.
First time seeing junior guard Terquavion Smith, an N.C. State commit. Y’all are gonna love this guy, Wolfpack fans. Smooth, efficient, super athletic. He dropped 40 points (16-21 FG) for Farmville Central tonight in the
@HoopsDreams910
showcase.
For the first time in 36 years,
@UNCP_MBB
has secured back-to-back conference titles. Congrats to seniors Nigel Grant (

Eldon “Pops” Miller is stepping down at the end of this season after 12 years as a volunteer assistant coach at

. He’s one of my all-time favorites.
“I have a lot of plaques at home but none of them are on the wall. This one’s going on the wall.”
Today’s my work anniversary. I’ve officially been at The Fayetteville Observer for three years. S/O to all of the coaches and athletes who make my job a blast. It’s not always fun (see 2020) but the good far outweighs the bad.

Tre Jones on Coach K:
He told us before the game that he’s gonna bring the energy and we just needed to bring it with him. When we can bring energy like that, it definitely gives us a boost — offensively, defensively, wherever. If we’re lacking something, it gives us a boost.
Fayetteville’s Joey Baker (
@Joey_bvker
) focused on confidence, consistency entering Year 3 with
@DukeMBB
.
“Going into this year, that’s a big thing for me. I feel like I’m more confident in myself than I was the first two years.”
Terry Sanford’s Tamia Morris (
@tamiamorris3
) is set to play college basketball at UNC Pembroke (
@UNCP_WBB
). Her signing ceremony lasted for just over 27 minutes and featured several speakers. Most of the conversation centered around who Morris is off the court.

Another bucket-list item checked off the bucket list. I grew up dreaming of being at the Final Four, I was just hoping it might be as a player. But this ain’t bad at all. Different path that led to the same place.

His thoughts on playing for an HBCU, sticking with football and a conversation with a former NFL coach:
Had a blast talking with
@DukeMBB
’s Nolan Smith (
@NdotSmitty
) about the 2010 title game against Butler. Hard to believe it’s been almost 10 years. CBS will be showing the game Sunday afternoon and April 5 — the 10-year anniversary.
“He’s the one that won’t let anybody outwork him, and he won’t let anybody stay in the gym longer than him.”

BREAKING: Seventy-First's Tony Jones has been relieved of his coaching duties.
This includes a quote from Jones, but it's a developing story. I'll have an in-depth story on the "unexpected" news at some point Thursday.

Here’s a portion of an email I received from a parent of a Seventy-First basketball player. The player was struggling in class, so the parent reached out to Jones for help.
Can confirm: Will Shipley is a good football player. Sheeeeeesh. Here’s a 67-yard TD run. Lee County trails 21-0 with just under four minutes left in the first half.

Dennis Smith Jr. will be back in Fayetteville on Wednesday for a basketball camp at E.E. Smith. It’s sold out, but it should be a good time for the kids who were able to sign up. I was able to catch up with him this weekend. See y’all on Seabrook later this week

No room for Cinderella in the Big Easy. This isn’t a Disney movie. It’s Duke, Kansas, Villanova and North Carolina in the Final Four. We get to see the best rivalry in sports on the biggest stage. A gift from the basketball gods, who are flashing an evil grin
