George Stubbs (born 25 August 1724) was the foremost animal painter in Britain in the 18th century. After taking part in Captain James Cookβs first voyage to the Pacific, Sir Joseph Banks commissioned Stubbs to paint two examples of Australian fauna not yet seen in the West.
HMS Challenger spent three and a half years on a circumnavigation of the globe between December 1872 and May 1876, investigating the oceanβs depths and documenting the sights on land and sea.
