@PuccaNoodles
SKIP AND LOAFER!!!!!!! I'm the same as you its been a long time since i found a good new romcom but this is MY NEW OBSESSION ITS SOOOOO GOOOOODDDDD (its not classified as a shoujo though it's a seinen cuz shit gets real!!!!!)
reminder that SxF was heavily inspired by shoujo series and its spiritual predecessor, "i spy" was driven in part by endo reading a lot of shoujo manga.
> i was reading a lot of shoujo manga at the time. to be honest, I didn't really feel anything for the male character...
LRT I'm reminded of how Endo's art style is actually somewhat atypical for a shonen series mangaka. It could be partially influenced by his assistants, but the way clothing and screentone application (Amongst other details) look in SxF feels almost shoujo at times.
when people act like it's only older shoujo that touches on darker themes and forget a licensed post-apocalyptic manga that touches on genocide, death, and political power struggles ended last year
banana fish was always for us girlies:
> I do, but I think writing for boys is boring. Their wants and desires are too obvious (laughs). And I feel they’re conservative… They don’t believe in magic and instead believe in their own sexual desires (laughs).
by the way, the following groups can use the following:
- lost translations (bread & butter): cleaner/redrawer (!!, experienced only)
- decadence: anything
- stiletto heels: translators
- crystal dragon scans (my group): cleaner/redrawer
i am willing to train people.
With us losing shoujo/josei scans groups left and right please make sure to show some support to the current scan groups that we have, like Seishun, Decadence, Shortcake Club, Crystal Dragon Scans, etc . Leaving a comment here and there might go a long way.
this is fucking terrible because when people talk about abolishing demographics they almost always mean it within the context of only consuming male media, especially due to the availability of shounen and seinen.
Interesting thing to note: Starting this year the Shogakukan Manga Awards have abolished Categories/Demographics!
Previously the winners were put in 4 Categories for Boys, Girls, Children and the General Category. But readership nowadays is much more widespread across genders &…

yes shoujo and shounen are genres let me explain the difference.
shounen: women with breasts larger than their torso, males
shoujo: sci fi, action, romance, comedy, parody, psychological, historical, sports, magic, drama, mystery, adventure, slice of life (but serious), horror
even if she's not actually on the spectrum, chihaya from chihayafuru is one of the best representations of autism in animanga because of how wonderfully and lovingly she's portrayed with so many traits commonly associated with ASD.
begging people to read more than 5 manga.

when people talk about how shoujo fans don't help the demographic by acting superior to shounen/seinen fans, it's amazing just how transparent it is. a large portion of animanga communities are openly misogynistic, while all shoujo fans seem to like at least one shounen series.
short shoujosei series you should read... looking for a new series but don't have much time? these are all completed series with less than 30 chapters (most of them, significantly less).
the dislike of female characters who are weak or get overwhelmed by emotions is misogyny. so many shounen series have a loser protagonist and almost no one cares yet have a single vulnerable female character and you get "typically female protagonist".
look, if a series has a guy fantasizing about killing a girl and mutilating her in the first chapter and it's about how he falls in love with the girl, it's not him coming to realize his faults and become better, it's a self insert incel fantasy.
every shoujo fan should watch vampire knight. is it well-written? no. does it make you feel happy inside? no. is it insightful? no. but is it a pretty, exhilarating ride? yessss.
1). pretty much anyone can get the "contact details" of contributors on github: most devs publish code with their real names
2). you're harassing open-source developers for making content sources available. it's like harassing youtube-dl (which was thrown out).

it's soooo unsurprising on the misogynistic hellhole that is MAL that we have people freaking out about a guy consensually putting his hand around an adult woman, meanwhile mainstream anime has a million creepshots of children.
reading reviews of a sign of affection on myanimelist was a bad idea because i’m about ready to throw hands…
“itsuomi is a creep” comparing it to “a silent voice” when both of them are VERY different stories— im tired
> But girls aren’t like that. They’re confusing and complicated and I don’t know what they’ll react to and how, and on the flip side that means anything goes.”
from an interview with yoshida akimi, the author of banana fish.
Manga that is NOT a shoujo but people will leave on shoujo rec tweets without fail:
- Horimiya
- Skip and Loafer
- Apothecary Diaries
- Witch Hat Atelier
- Romantic Killer
just adding if you're a classic shoujosei fan, kageki shojo! gives you a LOT. you'll see themes and references to other classic series, not just RoV, and it is glorious.
Otherwise if you're looking for more ROV related media I'd highly suggest watching/reading Kageki Shojo! The series about a girl named Sarasa who wants to become an actress so that she can play as Oscar! It's a great series and if you're an ROV fan you'd especially enjoy it!
to spread some positivity, i think everyone should qrt with some shoujo or josei manga you love & recommend that isn’t talked about enough. i’ll go first ^__^
i wish more non-romance shoujo series (there's a decent few for josei) got translated, because there's a lot of interesting series i see from my japanese feed but almost none get translated.
"ao haru ride" was pretty average and a good half of translated, shoujo HS romance series are more interesting than it. futaba's relatable, but her arc isn't very interesting and i never found kou endearing.
Korean KBS reports that Kakao has identified the operators of the world's largest manga & webtoon piracy site "M..." after five years of investigating. Kakao expressed its plans to work together with japanese manga companies to fight against manga/webtoon piracy.…
BTW... "don't call it mystery" is one of the best selling manga of all time in ~5 years and is selling ~1.5m copies/volume. it's worth buying because it's damn good, not just for "7 seeds".
people who did not have many female friends don't seem to realize how popular nana was back in 2010 internationally, even on misogynistic shitholes like MAL (and was WAYYYY more well known among female anime fans in general), and is still famous now
oh i've got a lot... first, forcing weekly release schedules is predatory and takes a huge physical toll on the mangaka and everything should be moved to a biweekly or monthly release schedule (or be less than 10 pages)
many of us almost entirely consume femgaze media because we don't like the objectifying description or framing of women so telling us "it's practically shoujo, just ignore the naked bath scene and the focus on ridiculously well-endowed women" is like, why we avoided it
another one of SxF's spiritual predecessors, "ishi ni usubeni, tetsu ni hoshi", is inspired directly by "aishiteruze baby", a series published in ribon.
growing up and realizing a lot of my favorite anime/manga as a child is "problematic" or has "problematic" charters hurts my soul 🤧
Like that was my standard 🧍♀️
complaining about shounen and seinen fans when they complain about "typical shoujo protagonist" for any woman who dares have emotional vulnerability or review bombing fruba when mainstream shounen and seinen magazines objectify and leer at underage girls.
what's incredible in how misogynistic this is is yona not only becomes a master archer and able to navigate treacherous cliffs on her own, she also learns kindness and empathy and confronts her own father's failings as a ruler even though he loved her.
sigh this seems to have been the goal of the author herself... using AI to translate series will just lead to more piracy because official copies will be terrible so reading legal copies will no longer happen. and any ethical reason to do so will disappear.
→Please keep that in mind. That is why I am so frustrated that people are reading pirated copies that were uploaded without the involvement of an official publisher! As for this case, I would be happy if you could look at it as a new way of doing things! (Fin)

when recommending series to people i wish they'd realize that just because you like a series doesn't make it a good rec. if their favorite series is monster, kamisama kiss probably isn't a great rec. but if they love toradora/horimiya i'm definitely saying kimi ni todoke.

Announcement: Overworked apothecary Colette jumps into a well. Instead of dying, she finds a new lease on life by caring for patients in the Underworld, and romance with the Lord of the Dead himself, Hades! Colette Decides to Die, by Alto Yukimura, releases Fall 2024.
clearly, a child rape victim whose mother committed suicide and he turned to prostitution to live and died of aids at the height of the aids epidemic is clearly not dark or real enough compared to skip and loafer
even if the romance in chihayafuru was good, it was never the primary reason that drew me to the series. midori, haruka, sumire, chihaya, shinobu, harada, taichi, and suo much more were, and their growth was much more so.
what we consume is a highly narrow subset of shoujo since magazines that focus less on romance almost never get licensed and rarely scanlated, and even then modern shoujo translated into english being only light-hearted romances still isn't true.
